OFF THE MARKET: Possible Cleveland Guardians Target Ryan Helsley Signs with Baltimore Orioles

Happy Thanksgiving out there, Guardians fans. And oh, for all my Buckeye friends as well. Miss you here on Locked on Guardians on Friday. We’ll be back on Monday. Can’t wait. Let’s talk real quick about Ryan Helley who was a guy that we had talked about as a Guardians target possibly. He’s off the board. He’s going to the Orioles for two years, 28 million to be their closer. He’s got an opt out after the first year. Uh I haven’t seen the full terms of the deal as far as the two years. I’m assuming it’s 14 million for both. That’s at least the annual average value. That is the upper bounds, probably further than the upper bounds the Guardians would pay for a reliever. 14 million for a year is quite a bit. And Helley did struggle with the Mets last year. He was good with the Cardinals before he got traded. He says he was tipping pitches uh with the Mets and things went the wrong direction for him. That being said, given the market and how relief deals work and given the Guardians bullpen situation, uh, knowing they won’t have Emanuel Claus anymore, I I would have been interested in in doing that deal with him. I think for two years with an opt out after one at 14 million, there’s not a ton of risk there, especially if has a great year, he goes back to the market next year, you’re not committed to that. And 14 million next year, if things go wrong, you know, it’s a little bit straining, but it’s not that bad. Um, but he’s the first big one off the market of those relievers. We’ll see what happens here. I’m not going to freak out too much about it or at least, you know, be too disappointed in the Guardians not getting in there. We’ll see who else they decide to go with in the bullpen. We know they already lost Sam Henches who, you know, would have been a risk anyway. I’m surprised he got a major league deal even though it was cheap. We’ll see what else happens. There’s more free agents. I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade for reliever. I mean, in the 2019 offseason going into 2020, I don’t think anybody had the Cory Club trade to Texas for Emanuel Class and Lo Shields who’d rather forget about on their bingo card. I certainly didn’t. So, that’s always that route, too. We’ve talked about some trade relievers on the show, too. Maybe there’s a reliever out there in a trade they could go after, too, that we haven’t seen yet, either. But, there’s still time to add to this bullpen, which I think they need to do. But, Helley is off the market. I do think that is a good contract for where the market is. free agent relievers are always a risk, no doubt. Um, this is one I I think was a fairly good contract. You know, if he has a terrible year at the Orioles, maybe some of the best deals you don’t make are the best ones. Um, so we’ll see what happens with him. I would have been okay with that deal, but let’s see how the rest of the offseason goes. The market’s still there and there’s still trades to be made. We will talk all of this and more on Monday. Can’t wait to get back and talk with all of you about the Guardians after this break over Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you’re all good and hope you miss us as much as we miss

  1. The hitting is still the bigger need and that's where the focus should be. As far as the bullpen is concerned, they'll do what they always do. They'll find one or two pitchers no one's ever heard of and turn them into serviceable players. They just have to stay clear of pitchers with closing experience (and flaws) as they haven't had much luck with that the last couple of years.
