  1. The giants were not going to sign him whether they were trying for him or not. He will be a dodger. Everything he said about beating them is to drive his price up which the dodgers will pay.

  2. That’s a pathetically awful leap, even for Olney’s standards.

That they are *also* looking at “moderately priced arms” (i.e., Tyler Mahle, Brad Keller, Max Scherzer) isn’t a sign that they “aren’t chasing highesr priced pitchers, like Imai.”

It just means they are covering all of their bases.

  3. Olney is an east coast supremacist, his job is basically to fluff NY and Boston up with engagement bait. I have zero faith in his takes.

  4. I’m more comfortable not assuming Imai should automatically be one of the ‘highest priced pitchers’ They definitely need pitching, but paying ace prices for an unproven guy isn’t always for the best.

  5. Imai hasn’t even set foot on US soil and met teams yet. Unless there are reports the Giants straight up didn’t meet him, this is a big nothingburger.

  6. If anyone thought differently, they haven’t been watching giants baseball for the past decade

  7. They likely have a few names circled that they would pay for, and a bunch of bargain names. Nothing unusual. They aren’t going to spend just to spend.

  8. Cody Ponce and Adrian Houser are two of my best guesses for “moderately priced” options.

  9. This wasn’t even a post worth making for Buster. It’s not saying anything. This is a huge leap to say because they aren’t trying for Framber, they also must not being interested in Imai? Come on, Olney.

  10. They need 2-3 starting pitchers though. They aren’t going to sign 2-3 top of the market arms. Whether they sign Imai or not, they will sign one or two much cheaper arms at some point. This is a wild take by Olney.

  11. Usually, stuff leaks about the Giants when the agent is struggling to get someone signed. It’s way too early for that.

  12. I mean how knowledgeable is this guy about the giants or news relating to them? There are a few very reliable reporters that have really good inside knowledge, but I don’t think this guy is one of them.

  13. It would piss me off for them to not take advantage of Webb’s very team friendly contract and get another worthy starter, while also paying Devers, Adames, and Chapman a ton of money. Hope this is nonsense.

  14. I’ve always said it’s Imai or bust. The Giants don’t like long contracts for pitchers but they were willing to give Yamamoto 10 years. Imai is 27 they’ll be willing to give him 6. They’ll stay away from 30+ year olds if they want more than 2 years probably.

If we don’t get Imai I won’t be shocked if all we get is Scherzer and Bassit

  15. Giants FO has been telling everyone this all offseason. So should be no surprise. Imai will go to NY.

  16. I think Posey and this FO are pretty good about not leaking anything to the press, which helps them maintain leverage in negotiations. No team is going to say to Buster Olney (or Jeff Passan), “we are going to sign multiple players to huge deals” because it reeks of desperation and the players ask for the moon when they have that information available to them

I trust that Posey knows what he’s doing

  17. Isn’t Olney known to be a shill for Boras? Probably just him helping drive up the price for Imai via his “reporting”

  18. Just because yall don’t agree with it doesn’t make it wrong or not accurate.

Imai’s salary expectation by the analysts has been roughly 6 yr/$150M.  That’s a lot for the Giants, for no reason other than cheapness, but unfortunately that’s what it will be to get good pitchers.

They need to sign Imai, sign/trade for another starter, and at least two more bullpen arms.  If they don’t, or are outbid, that will say a lot because there’s not a lot of depth in the lower levels so what exactly are we doing here.
