Some Ner roster news to touch on. The Niners elevated kicker Matt Gay. Linebacker Jaylen Graham from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against Cleveland. No elevation for the recently acquired linebacker Eric Kendricks. A 2019 first team allpro. Of note, after playing Cleveland, the Niners have a late by week in week 14. So, next week, no game for San Francisco. And I imagine the Niners are going to give Kendricks more time to get acclimated with Robert Salah’s defense. He played well last year for the Dallas Cowboys. Reunited with his former head coach, Mike Zimmer, who was the DC last year for Dallas, and so the Niners added him to the practice squad a couple of days ago. And that’ll give him additional time to learn this defense. And it would not surprise me if coming out of the by-week against the Tennessee Titans, another winnable game for the Ners. If Kendricks perhaps starts for San Francisco, if he starts to learn the ins and outs of this defense. Elsewhere, as far as some roster news for San Francisco, Eddie Pinero not going to play once again. So, Matt Gay going to be the Niners kicker here against Cleveland. Going to be rough conditions, which we’ll get to here in just a moment. Gay did go two for two on his field goals last week against the Panthers on Monday Night Football. Two for two on his extra points. He had a kick 40 plus yards. So, it was good to see him split the uprights on that kick attempt. Eddie Pierro still dealing with that hamstring injury. And then back to Eric Kendricks. Kyle Shanahan said this that the Niners have actually been talking to him all throughout the year and Shanahan acknowledged that Kendricks had some other options, but the timing was right for him. we’ve been wanting him on board. So Shanahan said, “We’re pumped that he wanted to come here, pumped to have him.” And of course that funny story from last year when the ners had agreed verbally to sign Kendricks to a contract and he was going to be the Dre Green Law holdover plan, but then the Cowboys said, “Well, when Greenaw comes back, you’re probably going to be relegated to the bench. We have a starting role for you.” So Kendricks actually didn’t end up signing with the ners. He signed with the Cowboys. burned San Francisco and then the Ners had to sign of Andre Campbell. That signing ended up being a disaster and then Campbell famously left the game and walked off the field during the game last year and has not been seen since in an NFL uniform and rightfully so. He talked crap on the Packers after leaving them and then he left the NerS in that embarrassing fashion. Speaking of that Monday Night Football game, punching somebody in the balls will cost you a lot of money, especially when it’s caught on tape. So, Travon Merig, the Panther safety, had that nutshot on Jawan Jennings. He has been suspended one game, his appeal denied, and he was suspended $65,000 for punching Jawan Jennings in the stones. Now, Jennings at the end of the game retaliated, and he’s been fined, too. $12,000, but obviously less money and he’s not being docked a game. So, this goes for in between the lines when you’re playing football, when you’re not playing football, any walk of life, do not punch somebody in the balls. A big storyline for tomorrow’s game. Brock Pury playing in bad weather on the road against Cleveland. Miles Garrett has 18 sacks. The Niners as a team have 13. The Browns have one of the most stout defenses in the NFL and this is going to be a bad weather game in Cleveland, which this time of the year, do they ever get sunshine in Cleveland, in Ohio? I don’t think so. But this is a marquee storyline given Brock Party’s previous struggles in inclement weather. He played poorly in Cleveland back in 2023 in bad weather and against the Carolina Panthers. He was awful in that game throwing three interceptions in that first half against the Panthers. And the Cleveland forecast, it is not good. It is going to be 39°ish. So hovering mid to high30s. There could be winds up to 25 to 35 mph. So, it’s going to be windy. There are going to be rain showers in the morning. That’s going to change over to snow showers in the afternoon. And so, the high is 39. The real field temperature going to be a lot lower than that. Winds southwest 25 to 35 miles hour. The chance of precipitation 60% and higher wind gusts are also possible. So snow, sleet, rain, wind in the forecast when the ners play the Browns tomorrow. And Brock Pertie, his struggles in bad weather games well documented throughout his career. You think back to the October 15th game in 2023 when the Niners went on the road against Cleveland. I believe that was their first loss that season. San Francisco lost 1917. Jake Moody missed that potential game-winning field goal at the end of the game. Brock Pury did put the Niners in a position to win that game, but he played very poorly. 12 of 27. He completed 44% of his passes for only 125 yards, no touchdowns, two picks, and he had a 30.4 passer rating. Now, when the ners played the Buccaneers that season in November, there was some rain in that game and Brock Pury played okay, 19 of 33 and he threw for 222 yards, two touchdowns, one pick. the Packers playoff game in the divisional round. Remember, it was raining at Levi Stadium. This is in January of 2024, the calendar year, 2023 season. Niners, of course, came back to win 24-21. But Pury wasn’t great in that game. 23 of 39, completed 59% of his passes, 252 yards, a touchdown, and a pick, and a rating of 77.2 two against Buffalo last year in the snow. Niners lost 24-13. That’s when Christian McCaffrey was lost for the year with that knee injury. Pretty could barely grip the football and throw it. 24 of 42, 57%, one touchdown, one pick. And what you notice in these games, which is kind of surprising because he played at Iowa State in Iowa, even though the college football schedule has kind of changed where a lot of times then you weren’t playing like deep into November and December. Um because the college schedule was different then. uh but still some bad weather games when he was playing at Iowa State, but he can’t grip the ball and the velocity behind his throws really is lacking and that was the problem in clean weather conditions against Carolina. So, I’m going to be watching this closely. Everybody else is as well. And then there was that Rams game last year in the rain when the Niners lost 126. They couldn’t do anything offensively. Pretty 12 of 27. He completed 44% of his throws, 98 passing yards, no touchdowns in a pick. So, his completion percentage across those games, less than 55%. And in those games in particular, four touchdown, six picks, a rating of 63.4. And the turnovers have been a problem. He’s also lost a couple of fumbles and he’s fumbled the football multiple times. One of them, I believe, was recovered. And the NerS are averaging well below their average usually when Pury is playing in better weather games. They’re averaging like 17 points per game in some of these bad weather games. So, we’ll see how Pretty plays because I don’t know if it’s the turftoe. He said it wasn’t, but he wasn’t putting any zip behind his throws against Carolina on Monday night. Now, the Niners have won seven straight games against rookie quarterbacks. They’re eight and two under Kyle Shanahan with both losses coming to Josh Rosen in 2018. That was the second year under Kyle Shanahan. The Niners, oddly enough, are though three and five in the game before the by-week under Kyle Shanahan. And of course, they play the Browns before the by-week here, which is a week 14 buy. And look, I like Brock Perie. I think he’s a good quarterback. There’s no doubt he needs to play better. And I would say his play in 2024, 2025 concerning. The turnovers have been alarming. It’s not a sustainable way to play football. Whether you love Pery or not, you have to admit that. When you lose a turnover battle at the NFL level, you lose about 80% of the time. You win about 80% of the time. and Pertie in his last 19 starts last year and this year, 28 touchdowns, 19 interceptions. Brock Perin’s first 21 starts, he was highly efficient, 44 touchdowns, 15 picks. What concerns me is that at Iowa State, he was turnoverprone, tried to play hero ball, and turn the ball over at some really inopportune times. And the way that he started his career, it was so efficient to the point where cumulatively since he started his career, he’s been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL. But over the last 19 starts, he’s starting to regress more toward the averages here. Now, can he get back to more efficient play, making better decisions? For sure. Is his timing a little bit off right now because he’s missed so much time? No doubt about it. But 28 touchdowns, 19 picks, that’s not good. And he’s turning the ball over way too much. And Pury needs to clean it up. He needs to play better. The gunslinger mentality, it’s good to have at times, and it’s fun to watch at times, but I think he has to harness it a little bit. And I think that’s a completely fair critique. He doesn’t have the arm strength to take chances like Brett Favre. Another cool note here. The last time the Niners won at Cleveland in Cleveland all the way back in 1984, November. And this game tomorrow still going to fall in November. And that was when the Niners beat the Browns 41-7. Funny enough, it came after Joe Montana threw four interceptions in a win at home. Brock Pury in a win at home against Carolina through three picks. Now, like other people who talk about the Niners, I’m not comparing Brock Pury to Joe Montana. Joe Montana arguably the GOAT, but that is the last time that the Ners won against the Cleveland Browns on the road in Cleveland. Kyle Shanahan as a head coach, we talked about this earlier in the week, and offensive coordinator 1 and8 all time against Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwarz. His offenses are averaging. Yikes. 15.7 points per game in those games. They’re going to have to chip Miles Garrett. They’re going to have to run plays away from Miles Garrett. They’re going to have to run the football. And if they don’t run the football, I think the Niners are going to lose this game if they can’t find success on the ground. Sunday going to be a very difficult game for San Francisco here. Another key storyline in this game and it adds a lot of theater to it, a lot of excitement, a lot of intrigue is that Shador Sanders is making his second NFL start against the NerS. And according to Adam Shfter, he just reported this today. The Browns are open to giving Sanders an extended look for the rest of the year, just as fellow rookie Dylan Gabriel got in the first half of the season, sources told ESPN. But much of that decision will be dictated by how Shadore plays on Sunday against the NerS. The Browns were impressed with what they saw from Shadore in his first NFL start last week against Las Vegas. I thought Shadore showed some playmaking skills. He made a really nice throw down field when he rolled to his right and found fellow rookie Isaiah Bond who played his college football at Texas. Should have been a touchdown in my opinion. and he was aggressive with some of those downfield throws. You look at the stats and it’s not like he put up insane production. 11 of 20, 209 yards, one touchdown, one pick, but I thought some of the playmaking was there out of structure and he had some accurate throws and you saw a quarterback who I think you can build off of that skill set and the Browns are going to see how he plays against this Ner’s defense on Sunday and we’ll see how the weather impacts both Brock Pury and Shadore. You know, Brock played at Iowa State. There were some cold weather games there. Shador played in Boulder, Colorado. There were some cold weather games where it rained and there was some snow. All right, just wanted to pass along some thoughts, some news on the NerS going into tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns. If you’re waking up with us on this Sunday, it’s a Ner’s game day. 49ers elevated K Matt Gay and LB Jalen Graham from the practice squad for Sunday’s game at Cleveland. No elevation for LB Eric Kendricks. He’ll get acclimated during the bye week next week. 49ers play vs. Titans in week 15.

Kyle Shanahan on Eric Kendricks:
“We’ve been talking to him throughout the year. I know he had other options, but the timing was right for him. We’ve been wanting him on board. So we were pumped he wanted to come here.”

Gay: 2 for 2 on his field goals last week vs. Panthers, 2 for 2 on his extra points. Eddy Pineiro still dealing with his hamstring injury.

Speaking of the MNF game: Punching somebody in the balls will cost you a lot of money.

Moehrig: 1-game suspension, $65,000 fine
Jennings: $12,000 fine

Big storyline for tomorrow’s game: Brock Purdy playing in bad weather after a game in which he threw three interceptions vs. Panthers on MNF.

Cleveland forecast:

49ers have won 7 straight vs rookie QBs and are 8-2 under Shanahan with both losses coming vs Josh Rosen in 2018

49ers are 3-5 in the game before the bye week under Kyle Shanahan. They play Browns tomorrow before getting a week off

Brock Purdy in bad weather games in his career. Struggles mightily despite playing at Iowa State.

Grok numbers

I like Brock Purdy and think he’s a good QB, but he needs to play better and his play the last two years has been concerning.

Purdy in his last 19 starts: 28 TD / 19 INT.

Brock Purdy in his first 21 starts: 44 TD / 15 INT.

He’s turning the ball over at an alarming rate and it’s not a sustainable way to play QB.

Purdy needs to clean it up and play better. The gunslinger mentality is good to have at times, but he has to harness it a bit. He doesn’t have the arm strength to take chances like Brett Favre.

The last time the 49ers won at Cleveland, November 1984. Beat the Browns 41-7 the week after Joe Montana threw 4 INTs in a win at home.

Kyle Shanahan as a head coach and OC is 1-8 all-time vs. Browns DC Jim Schwartz. His offenses have averaged 15.7 PPG in those games.

Sunday is going to be a very difficult game for the Niners.

Another key storyline: Shedeur Sanders making his second NFL start vs. 49ers.

Adam Schefter, ESPN:
“The Browns are open to giving Sanders an extended look for the rest of this season, just as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel got in the first half of this season, sources told ESPN. But much of that decision will be dictated by how Sanders plays, starting Sunday.

The Browns were impressed with what they saw in Sanders’ first NFL start last Sunday at Las Vegas — his playmaking skills, his aggressive downfield throws, his ability to buy time and push the ball down the field. Sanders will have to continue to get comfortable playing in structure and on time, but the Browns are encouraged with what they have seen.

Sanders is said to have had another good week of practice, taking the starter’s reps for the second time this season.”

Sanders completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Cleveland’s 24-10 victory over the Raiders.

  1. Chase, I think you don't mention that everyone except maybe Josh Allen has played poorly in bad weather. In fact, Walker, who quarterbacked, the Browns threw 2 INTs to Brock's 1 INT and had more incomplete passes. Brock was two of three inside the redzone. Moody missed two field goals to lose the game. If the 49ers had won that game, no one would even mention Brock's stats in bad weather. He beat Greenbay coming from behind in the playoffs when it was pouring.

  2. “Good afternoon from Cleveland, where the San Francisco 49ers are set to clash with the Browns at Huntington Bank Field. Kickoff comes your way at 1:00 Eastern, and the weather will be a factor. Temperatures start at a brisk 35 degrees and dip to 33 by the final whistle. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, with a steady west-southwest breeze around 11 to 13 miles per hour. Visibility is solid at nine miles, and while there’s about an inch of snow already on the ground, fans can breathe easy—only a 7 to 8 percent chance of rain throughout the contest. Bundle up, Cleveland, it’s football weather at its finest!”
    49er weather… Go Niners!

  3. Accurate reporting Chase, when I saw us having to go back to Cleveland, I was already worried about Brock. Kyle needs to go back 2 years ago plan with Brock because of his injuries, lack of velocity on the ball and how he historically plays in these conditions. Run run run the ball with an occasional bomb here and there.

  4. Hey, if Purdy who may have had his best preseason this year, didn't get hurt, things would have been different. Healthy, strong arm, better anticipation, but it wasn't to be … maybe the football gods are saying protect the ball, stop being a loose Canon, throw the ball away, hit the flats, check it down. If he is so boneheaded after seeing Mac, maybe he doesn't deserve another chance to lead this team. Make him and Mac compete for the starting job next year !!

  5. And I guess nobody has ever had a bad game!! Seriously stop pointing out Brock’s errors. He knows. As CMC said, if anyone came up to him about a missed whatever, do you really need it thrown in your face. 😠

  6. I don't know if you hear me i encourage you if you think there going the fortyniners are going to win think again the answer is Brock Purdy is mistake he's only the only person that isn't ready he's only gonna get hurt it's a fact the only person they going to blame is the organization they let this happen before and got hurt you are making the biggest mistake you will only person to blame is the organization you people are too stupid or pathetic mac Jones is ready he's the other person Kyle Shannonhan is a mistake bad decision on bringing back Brock Purdy back plain and simple
