Freddy Peralta BACK to the Seattle Mariners?! + Other Mock Trades | Fan Fiction Friday

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to see what kind of Mariners trade you cooked up. Colobby, hit it. [Music] You are Locked On Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Ohoy sailors. It is Friday, November 28th, 2025. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. You’re listening to the Lockdowns Podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. now the number one sports podcast network. My name is Titan Gonzalez and I’m joined as always by my co-host Colobby Patode. We’re two lifelong Mariners fans who’ve been covering the team for over half a decade. And on today’s show, it’s Fanfiction Friday where you submit your mayor’s trade ideas and we grade them on the 2080 scale based on things like creativity, uniqueness, and you know, if they make sense for all parties involved. Before we get into this week’s trades, I want to shout out our title sponsor today, Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use the promo code locked on MLB. That’s LC K O N MLB for $20 off your first purchase. All right, so kicking us off here on FanFiction Friday is Mariners Fan 2412, who has a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, Aaron Ashby, left-handed reliever, and Freddy Peralta, right-handed starter of course, going to the Mariners for Michael Royal, Logan Evan, apostrophe s, and Dangelo Sanja. It’s nice to talk about Freddy Peralta because it does feel like the odds of him being moved uh this winter have gone up fairly significantly over the last few uh weeks. You know, obviously you talk about uh you know, the Brewers are always a team that tries to get out uh in the last year of a deal, even if it’s a good one, because it’s it’s their last chance to maximize. And you kind of look at what the starting pitching market has done in free agency and and on the trade market a little bit, too. And it it does seem like it’s inevitable and and Woodruff accepted his qualifying offer. I’m not sure why the Brewers thought that was a good idea to to tender that to him. Uh but now that’s $20 million or $22 million uh that the Brewers probably don’t really want to spend. Uh that’s a lot to spend on their rotation for a team that kind of constantly recycles it. So, uh, and and also we should mention that today, uh, The Athletic reported that the Brewers are apparently concerned about their 2026 payroll. Uh, so and and then that article, um, Ken Rosenthal, Katy Woo, and Will Salmon, they did wonder if that meant that the Brewers would trade Freddy Peralta, but also Peralta does not do that much money, so that wouldn’t really save them a ton. No, the Brewers don’t have a lot of guys who are making a lot of money. So, yeah, they are that concerned they’re going to have to trade a couple of different pieces. Um, unless they can find a taker for Christian Yelich. Um, so maybe, but I I kind of doubt it. So, uh, yeah, Peralta is probably getting moved. Uh, so it’s good to talk about him. And he’s a number two, number three, like really good pitcher, lots of strikeouts. um you get him for one year, he’s only making $8 million. So for a team like Seattle, if especially if they can trade Luis Castillo, that’s a tremendous bargain. But uh they do have to be careful because again, it’s only for one year. Uh and you might be able to recoup a draft pick by slapping the Q on Qo on him next winter if the QO lives on in the new CBA, which tough to say. And maybe that’s why the Brewers are more willing to move him even though he’s only making $8 million because they don’t know if they’re going to get the draft pick for him. Uh so when you look at this trade in particular, I think you you present this to the Brewers and the Brewers say, “Okay, what are you giving us for Aaron Ashby?” Because Ashby’s a really good reliever, a left-handed relver who uh posted this year. He had a over a win uh of Fangraphs F or Fanrass War. Um, and he’s got four years of club control. And now Ashby is making a little bit of money. So that might be a guy that the Brewers try and trade because obviously, you know, here they would clear about $15 million in payroll uh with this move um for this year. Seven, I I think or maybe seven was next year. But either way, they’re going to clear 12 to 15 million, let’s call it this year. And then obviously Ashby has a couple another year club control after that. And then there are two club options on his contract. So, you know, they’re they’re the Brewers really only need to trade two years of this guy, but they’re going to ask for four years of control for the prices because they do have four years of control even if they don’t intend on, you know, picking up those options at the end of Ash. 5.7 by the way for this year. 134 million. Yeah. Uh, so that’s, you know, a bonus to them. But again, they’re not going to give Aaron Ashby away just because he’s making a little bit of money. They’re going to want something for Ashby and Logan Evan and whatever he possesses is uh is not going to get it done. Uh, so yeah, it’s I I think they look at this and they say, “Is that in the ballpark for what we want for Freddy Peralta?” Sure, I think that’s probably in the ballpark. It’s it’s not too dissimilar from what they got for Corbin Burns for one year. Corbin Burns. But when you look at the Aaron Ashby part of it, they’re gonna be like, “Okay, well, what are you giving us for Aaron Ashby?” Sure. Yeah. Where it falls apart. I think the other thing too here is like because Freddy Peralta isn’t making just nothing for 2026. It’s what, 8 million bucks. Yeah. um given like what the starting pitching market has looked like so far on the free agency side of things even though it’s only for a year of Peralta there’s no club control beyond this this point that could get really expensive like a Royal and SJ is a really nice package for Peralta that’s a very competitive package but this winter could they actually get more for him even with just one I don’t know. I don’t know. So, um that’s really the the the biggest question that I have here. And then the Ashby thing just kind of makes it fall apart for me. Um just cuz like I feel like it needs to be better than Logan because like it’s pretty clearly like Sanja and Aoyo are for Peralta. So that just leaves Logan Evans for Ashby. I don’t think that gets it done. So yeah, honestly I I bet the Brewers would be like, “Give us Gabe Spire because he’s like Ashby, but he’s better and cheaper.” So uh and at that point, if you’re the Mariners, what’s really the point? Especially if you still have Luis Castillo. Like you, okay, we don’t need the number five starter. This is a luxury buy for us. Uh so yeah, I think you know it it’s get a little greedy asking for Ashby and that’s where the steel kind of falls apart. But uh you know we hadn’t talked about Aaron Ashby and as a standalone trade target. I think that’s probably somebody we should be talking about. Y uh so I’ll give you credit for that. And I will say the Freddy Peraltto part is mostly on t mostly on target. But when you combine the two sides I think it drops down to like a 40. Uh, but like the overall components of the trade like the what is Freddy Peralta cost and you know is Aaron Ashby a good target that we should probably talk about a little bit more like that all works really well. So maybe a 45. Yeah, I was going to go 45 on this. You know, you brought up Ashby who we haven’t really seen on Fanfiction Friday. Um, and there’s at least enough of a respectable offer here that I think it gets a conversation going and then you can like work on it from that point forward. So yeah, so 45. All right, we will go over more of your trades here in just a moment, but first a reminder. This episode of the Locked Ones podcast is brought to you by Game Time and Doer. Sailors, I gotta tell you, I I love a good pair of jeans, but I’m also very particular about my jeans. You know, I I need the fit to be right. If they’re blue jeans, especially, there’s a very particular shade of light blue I’m looking for. And of course, I I need them to be comfortable, right? I mean, that’s the name of the game. And well, I I just got my first pair of jeans from Der, and they check off every single box. I got the performance denim slims as well as a pure Puma vintage pocket T, and they’re both getting added to my regular rotation. Derer jeans have five times the stretch of traditional denim. They’re antibacterial, meaning your jeans stay fresh longer, so you can wear more and wash less. And they’re made with Coolmax, which regulates your body temperature and wicks moisture. O line coach C has a deal here with the Tampa Bay Rays. Harry Ford, Felin Cullison, Tai Pete, Michael Morales to Tampa for Yandi Diaz and Garrett Clevenger. And he said he would even go one more of Canzone Williamson or another pitching prospect not named Sloan Anderson Sanger. Well, we’re not going to fill in the blanks for you. So, we’re just going to base your trade off of what you presented here. Ford, Salon, Pete, Morales, Tampa for Yanni Diaz, and Garrick Clevener. So, what do you think about that deal? Ford, Felon, and Taipei all make a lot of sense. We’ve heard the uh Rays really like all three of have liked all three of those guys at some point. Uh I heard a murmur last year that uh Felin Celeston was part of the ask for Yandi Diaz last winter. Now, obviously, you had an extra year of club control then uh for Diaz on that trade was made, but Diaz, I believe, still has two years of club control because he signed some kind of extension with the club option. So, it stands to reason after the year had that the raise asking price would remain similar. Uh and I think that would probably be Felman and like Taipei or Ford and Taipei. uh for Yandi Morales, whatever. He’s rule five eligible. I don’t think they’re going to trade for him just so that they could lose him in the rule five if he gets drafted in the rule five, but also they could just wait till after the rule five and then trade him. Uh that really was the thing. So maybe that’s where the player to be named later comes in and it’s like, well, they take Moral Morales gets drafted, we’ll give you somebody else, blah blah blah. Um yeah, so Ford Felman, Taipei for two years of Yandi and three years of Clevenger. It’s two years of clubry. Isada has three then. I always get those two guys mixed up. I think has four actually. So, let’s go get USA. Who cares about build out that 2028 bullpen? Yeah. Um, yeah. Um, yeah. Clevenger fang graph says free agent in 2028. So, that means two years left of club control. And then, yeah, USA says free agent in 2030. So, yeah, he’s got four years. Two years of each guy. We know that Yandi can hit. Like that’s not a up for debate. Clevenger is very good. Um so Ford, Celest, Pete, and Morales for those two guys. Two years each of those guys. It feels like you’re My hunch is is that you’re a little light. Uh but I don’t think you’re far off. Um I don’t think it is far off either. Yeah. Yeah. I I think it basically the way I look at this it would be like Harry Ford and Michael Morales for example for uh for Yondi and then it’s like Felinin and Tai Pete for Clevenger or Flip them whatever right uh I I think the piece the fourth piece has to be a little better than Morales but I don’t know how much better I I think you’re in the right ballpark here I feel like if this was Ford Celest Pete and McGrath Teddy McGrath then Maybe you’re there. Yeah, I think maybe because I I don’t know why I don’t have any insight on this, but it does feel like LCRA is a Tampa Bay Rays type of guy. So, yeah, I think you’re pretty darn close. Uh this is about as much as I would be willing to go and feel comfortable about it for these two players. Uh so, yeah, I think you’re right in the ballpark. Uh again, we’re not going to do your your guesswork for you. So just with these four players, uh, but I will say I don’t think H can zone carries really any value uh to the Rays. Uh Williamson maybe, but they have Junior Camero, so probably not. Uh so yeah, I think they’re your four guys here. I think you need a little bit better than Morales to get this across the finish line, but I think you’re pretty close to what it would actually cost get to get these two guys. So it’s at least a 50 since you’re like 55. Yeah, I’m just going to go 55 or 60. Honestly, I’ll knock you down because we talked a lot about Yandi. So, no creativity, but uh and obviously we talked a lot about Ford making so much sense for the Rays. So, zero creativity, but uh Ford P. We’ve talked a lot about Cleer, right? Technically very sound trade. So, yeah, 50 55 somewhere in that range. I think you’re right in the ballpark. Yeah, I’ll give you a 55. Yeah. Next trade here from 509 Hawk Finan. Trick Scooble and Carrie Carpenter to the Mariners for George Kirby, Lukeley, and Michael Aoyo. So, we’ve talked about this in the past. One year of Scooble, we would not trade anybody in the current rotation except for, you know, Luis, but we would wanted to do like a Louise thing like Louise plus prospects type of thing for for Scubble. Yeah. Yeah. But as this trade is presented to us right now, I’m not trading George Kirby for Luke straight up or sorry, George Kirby for Luke. I would do that. I wouldn’t do that rather. Would you say George Kirby first? Yeah. I would not trade Kirby for I would trade Luke for George Kirby. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Um but yeah, so like I still am not trading one of my four young younger starters for one year of Scubble. And Carpenter, as much as I like the guy, he’s really just more an more expensive Luke. I mean, and by the way, Carrie Carpenter did not have a good year. Despite what he did to you in the ALDS, he really didn’t have that great of a year. His on base percentage was sub, you know, 300. His walk percentage dropped below 5%. Like, and obviously the the struggles against lefties are still a real thing. He’s also not a very good defender. Like, he’s Domone. He’s just more proven Domone. And while you get him for three years, that is still a platoon player that you get for three years, not an everyday, you know, 100 160 game type of guy. So basically what this trade asks us is, is Carrie Carpenter enough to get you to actually trade one of these guys in the rotation for Scooble? And the answer to me is no. Yeah. I like Carpenter uh just fine. Uh, but again, like I have Luke, I have Dom Canzone. And while they may not be as good as Carpenter when Carpenter’s like at his peak and he’s actually playing well, they’re not that far off, especially a healthy Luke. And so I would still be I would still be giving up, you know, three years of Kirby and Michael Royo for Scooble. No, I’m not doing that. So like I’m still only interested in Scooble in a prospect only swap. Uh obviously like Cole Young I would count as a prospect but whatever. Um or if they want to take Luis Castillo and then we would get prospects like that’s the only major leager I’m giving up for Scubble. Like I my my assumption is that the thought process here is like okay well you get Scooble for this year and then by next year SA or Anderson would be the guy to jump in. Sure. Yeah. And like that makes sense in theory, but also like you could just keep Kirby, right? And you get, you know, three, four wins out of him, uh, total and then trade him next winter for a package that will give you multiple years of multiple players who could generate like it just makes more sense to trade Kirby for a package than as a one-off for a rental player. It just doesn’t make a ton of sense. uh if you’re the Mariners and and Carrie Carpenter isn’t enough to nudge me in the direction of being okay of trading uh George Kirby. So, I’m out on this still. Yeah. Uh as much as I like Carpenter, it just it doesn’t do enough for me uh to to you know talk about moving George Kirby uh for one year of school. Like it’s creative. I’ll give you that. Um this might be what it takes honestly to get like you know to to actually get the Tigers to budge on school. Um But that it’s just too too much for me. Too rich for my blood. So I’m I’m I’m gonna go I’ll still give you a 50 because I I think the trade itself is fine. It’s just from the mayor’s perspective, I I think that’s just way too much, way too risky for them to uh yeah, try to especially given what their, you know, roster building model ultimately is. If I felt a lot better about the Mariners willingness to give Scooble an extension beyond this year, of course, I would do this. But I don’t believe that they would do that. So, yeah. Yeah. Uh, I’m going to give it like a I don’t know, 45. For more information, go to patreon.com/controlthezone. link in the description of this episode. It’s fanfiction Friday. Let’s get back into your trades. We got another trade here from Mariners fan 2412. This one a deal with Guardians. Cade Smith, the best reliever in all of baseball last year by F4 this year 2025. Uh for Derangelo Sa, Michael Aoyo, and Carlos Vargas who’s clearly just a throw in on this. So, it’s Sanger and a Royal for Gate Smith. Basically, the tricky part is is that Kate Smith is still pre-arm. Yeah. And the Guardians have made the playoffs in backto-back years. They Yeah. Uh and they did it this year without Claus and Ortiz for, you know, reasons. Um and so they’re probably think they can compete next year. Uh and it’s not that the the Guardians wouldn’t trade. Like I think the Guardians very likely could trade Steven Quan because he’s starting to make some money, not because they want to get out from under it. Uh and the the Guardians are truly a a cheap franchise. They are a team that uh does not like to spend at all. They they don’t pretend to be a mid-market team. They they like to get rid of guys before they hit free agency. They’re like the Brewers, only they spend less and they’re not quite as good at it as the Brewers are. Uh but they’re still pretty good. So for that reason, a guy like Quan would be moved. But when you get to the pre-arb guys, particularly the pre-arb guys who are worth a win, two wins, three wins, like the Guardians just don’t trade those guys. And because they’re going to try and compete in a bad, you know, AL Central next year, uh then I I don’t see them trading their arguably their their, you know, most desirable trade piece before he’s even ARB eligible. I just don’t see that as as being the case here. So, I don’t think he’s actually going to be available this winter. And even if he was for four years of this guy, I mean like Mason Miller got the what, second or third best prospect in all of baseball. Yeah. Yeah. So I was I was going to say independent of everything that you just said, this isn’t enough. Like we’re talking about a guy that’s been worth almost 6 F4 in his first two seasons as a reliever in Major League Baseball. He’s prearb. like he why wouldn’t he get you a top 10 prospect in all of baseball cuz that’s what Edwin Diaz got the Mariners that’s what Mason Miller got the A’s yeah I mean you basically have to believe that the Guardians who do sometimes trade for bulk like it’s not like they don’t go for bulk but I think in this feels like Colt Emerson here yeah this feels like Colt Emerson or bust like from the perspective yeah I’m not trading Colt Emerson for any reliever Um, so yeah, I just don’t think this is enough. I I think this is a trade that sounds aggressive to us, but I think if you asked a uh a Guardians fan or just the Guardians themselves, they would be like, “No, we wouldn’t even consider that because Kate Smith is only costing us, you know, I’m sure he got a one of the bonuses because of his performance, but he’s only costing us like a million five.” Yeah. Like we have him for four years and we still plan to compete next year. Can we interest you in Steven Quan instead for these two prospects? That’s probably what they would do. So, to me, it’s Colt Emerson or maybe Kate Anderson as the the headliner here. And if it’s not one of those two guys, then I don’t think you’re getting Kate Smith. No. And I suppose it’s possible that the the Guardians could really like Ryan Sloan, but then you’re probably still also giving up like a Royo in that deal. And I don’t know, maybe the again, Beauties in the Eye of the Beholder. Maybe the Guardians love Michael Royo. Maybe they love Darangelo Sanger. And we don’t know that, but maybe they do. And maybe because they’re getting both of them, they’re like, “Okay, we we think we can do this because we’re really good at replacing bullpin arms. So, let’s do this.” And I don’t know, maybe they think Carlos Vargas can be something. That’s a lot of may and, you know, ifs in this trade. And I just think that ultimately Cade Smith is going to get at least what Mason Miller got. He’s going to get at least what Edwin Diaz got. And that is, you know, in the case of Edwin Diaz, you actually got a top 10 prospect and a top 50-ish prospect. So, uh, yeah, I do think it’s going to be at least the Mason Miller thing, which would be a top five prospect, which would be Cole Emerson, and I’m out. So, uh, interesting thought process. Uh, but I think I got to give it a 40. Yeah, I’m going to give it a 40 as well. All right, last trade of the day here, uh, comes from Aiden. It’s a fascinating one for one with the Rangers of all teams. Wyatt Langford. So, four years of Wyatt Langford for two years of Logan Gilbert. My initial reaction to this is I would not do this, but it’s fascinating. I think I would do this. Oo. So, it’s close. You know, obviously you’re banking on a little bit of uh upside that Langford still hasn’t quite hit yet. Um, but we’re talking about Wyatt Langford, four- win player last year, and that’s without, you know, I think he’s got 30 home run power. I think he can steal 30 bases. Pretty good defender. Uh, mostly in a corner, although he can play some center field like 241 uh 344, 431, 118 WRC plus basically Randy Rosena last year as a 23-year-old. Yep. You get him for four more years. Uh, I I think this is some this is like what it would take for me to consider trading Logan Gilbert would be a Wyatt Linkesque piece, a Riley Greenesque type of player. Like that that’s what I would want for Logan Gilbert if I was going to trade him this winter. Now, could the Mariners get that? No, probably not. I think the Rangers would look at this and be like, you know, the four the extra two years of Wyatt Langford probably matches our timeline a little bit more than the next two years with Logan Gilbert. Um, plus the Rangers are looking to shed some money and Logan is already ARB eligible and he’s already going to make what what is his ARB number this year? Do you remember off the top of your head? 10 flat. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, I like I suppose if they trade Evaldi or or Jacob Deg Grom, could they then pivot? Maybe. But I think ultimately like the Rangers are going to say no to this because it just doesn’t fit well with kind of their timeline and how they’re trending over the next couple years. My guess is that the Rangers, you know, they’re going to end up I think they’re trading either Seager or Aldi or uh or Deg Grom. This I think they want to trade one of those guys. What is their timeline though? Because the Brandon NMO trade is just so weird, right? Because like we talked about we talked about this on our Patreon the other day. like they get financial relief in the short term, but long term they actually have added more future payroll by bringing in Nemo. Like so are they trying to compete this year? Because like Nemo is a better player than Marcus Simeon right now. No, not just pure value. Yeah, like not sign. Like obviously Simeon’s bat has fallen off a cliff, but he’s still a really good defender. Nemo’s a better hitter. I would just say that right now like overall I would give at at the very least a slight advantage to Nemo being the better player right now than I mean but like what what do they want to do right now? So, like, does Logan Gilbert with two years left actually make sense for the Rangers? Especially when they’re going to give up a a guy who’s pre-ARB for this year and Wyatt Langford, I don’t know. And then from the Mariners perspective, it’s like cool like Langford’s a really good player. He’s basically Randy Rosena with actual good defense. Mhm. But he’s also 23, but also like he’s a corner out he would be a corner outfielder for you. Sure. And Logan’s like the one guy that you feel like at least from the outside looking in, it feels like he’s the most likely to sign an extension with you. Agreed. So like don’t you have future plans for Logan Gilbert beyond his two years left? So like I just What does his elbow say about those plans? Well, that’s the thing. But but then say the same. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Right. So, like are, you know, with the elbow concerns, are the Rangers going to trade Ryan Langford for him? No. Like I said, I would do this deal if I were the Mariners. I don’t think the Rangers would do it for a plethora of reasons, not the least of which is I don’t think Logan fits their timeline better than Wyatt Langford, but also I really can’t pinpoint what the Rangers timeline, what they’re shooting for is. So, I have no clue. It’s a fun thought exercise. It certainly is. There’s no question about that. Um, and again, like this is what it would take for me to move Logan this winter. Uh, it would be what Langford, it would be a Riley Green. It would be somebody like that. Like legitimately somebody like that. And you know, could you get that for for Logan Gilbert? Two years of Logan Gilbert. I don’t know. Probably not. But like that’s what it would take for me to be interested in moving him this winter. So I give you credit for finding an interesting, you know, trade. I It certainly is thoughtprovoking. It is a a good discussion to have um because you know we talk about like hey like what could what even is the the Logan Gilbert you know what even is fair to ask for Logan Gilbert this this is pretty much what’s fair to ask for whether you get it or not is a different story but yeah I’ll give you a 45 because I think this is really interesting. I just don’t think it’s it’s feasible. Yeah. No, I’ll give you a 50. It’s creative. All right, that is going to do it for our show. 1. I honestly would do the Detroit trade in a heartbeat. Personally I think you guys are overrating George Kirby. The guy has a 106 career ERA+, and most of that comes from 2023. He's a solid, reliable number 4 starter with number 3 upside. If he didn't pitch for the Mariners his ERA would hang around 3.90-4. Knowing Anderson is on the way (with Sloan, Cjintje behind him) I would absolutely include Kirby in a trade to acquire Skubal and Carpenter.

Is there something about Kirby I'm missing? I feel like Mariner fans overrate him.

  2. ASHBY it's nice .
NOT PERALTA WE HAVE TO MANNY PERALTAS.
    HERE WE NEED A REAL
    ACE.
LIKE SKUBAL SO NO TO PERALTA.
    LOPEZ OR RYAN
FROM MINESOTA ARE BETTER THAN PERALTA.
WHY NOT DIPOTO GET RANGER SUAREZ N TRADE
    CASTILLO.

  3. Honestly, If we could get Cleveland to give up Kwan and Ramirez, I'd be good with giving them Montes, Ford, Sloan, Arroyo, and Farmelo, maybe another prospect or two in the 11 to 15 range or Williamson
