The Spurs have beaten the number 3 (Rockets) and 4 (Nuggets) seeds in the west. Lost by 1 to the 2 seeded Lakers. Beaten the 2 (Raptors), 4 (Heat) and 5 (Hawks) seeds in the east.
We asked this question on the latest Silver and Black Coffee Hour episode and led to a lovely and lively debate!
So, how may teams are actually better than the Spurs right now?

The squad as it is right now with the injuries would be around the play in spot. I can see them being a 5 or 6 seed at best.
This squad at full strength is capable of a deep playoff run. The question mark is on the Thunder and dudes trying to contain SGA/all the weapons around him. Wemby owns Chet, but can the other guys step up to take those guys 7 games?
Love yalls stuff – keep it up!
I’ve been waiting for this pod to drop 🫡
Pretty good and exciting team. They learn their lesson from the past season and do things like prioritizing insurance bigs . Could they decide down the line to get bigger at the forward spots? For sure given the big wings theyll face in the West and it will help Wemby. Whats nice bout it is that they do not have to make a big trade for a all star kind.
Im just enjoying this one game at a time
I think OKC is in a tier of its own but why can’t we be in the same tier as Houston Denver and LA? We’re 2-1 against those 3 (And lost by 2 to the other) and we’ve never been even close to healthy
Also the upside of this team is immense when Wemby and Fox start to click and Castle and Harper develop over the course of the season. This team hasn’t given me a good reason to cap their ceiling yet
a tier below OKC, we’re in the same level as the lakers, rockets, nuggies
If wemby can consistently be the guy he was on game 1 then forget it, thats the peak. Like championship peak.
Top 5 in west for sure
I expect our team to make it in the playoffs. 2nd round is our ceiling. If we can make it to the west finals or win it all why not. But realistically, im good with second round playoffs
def one of the contenders in the west but not quite okc level yet
Even if we were healthy, we are not a top 10 team in the league if we were playing playoff intensity basketball. This team is still too undisciplined and makes too many mistakes. Too many times they will dribble into a forced shot with no ball movement.
Now, that is today. By the end of the season, if they 1) get healthy, 2) see some maturation from Bryant, and 3) get Castle, Harper, Fox to gel as playmakers with Wemby, and get better spacing or off the ball movement to give Wemby some passing targets, they can finish as a top 5 to 10.
I still predict they win 52 to 55 games, make the playoffs, and get eliminated in the second round.
We’re good, better than last season and the season before that, but we still have a lot of work to do in terms of perimeter defense. We’re one of the worst teams in guarding the 3, and if that doesn’t change, we’re not gonna be any threat to any contender in the playoff, which will be our true test to see if we can hang with teams like, LA, Denver and The Rockets now that they have KD.
I think a lot of it has to do with where you think Victor is currently. As others have insinuated, if the way he played in that first game is indicative of his actual overall ability when teams aren’t selling the farm to neuter him offensively well… We might be a problem earlier than people think. Because this team’s depth looks like it’s farther along than people expected. Fox looks back to being close to that all. NBA guy from a couple seasons ago, Castle is playing at a borderline All-Star level, and Harper is a genuine elite backup guard year 1 already.
I don’t think teams are going to be able to defend. Victor with those hard doubles anymore. Once we’re healthy. They’re going to have to play him straight up a heck of a lot more and when they do.. watch out
