If the Sabres could get a save and sort out their power play they would be really cooking

  2. Most games they have looked pretty decent. Besides a suboptimal PP, their biggest issue are a few big mistakes. They keep play to the outside for the most part but then have a doozy of a play that bites them.

Yesterday both goals were due to pretty big mistakes – the second goal where Tuch was stripped was particularly bad. They got lucky when they decided to not take Faber on 3v3 and he had a clear 1v1 with Ellis. Similar in Pittsburgh with the Timmins giveaway. You hope to get the saves, but those are big mistakes that just should not happen to begin with. Good teams don’t make those kinds of mistakes often.

They need to clean those up and get PP going to league average and I think they would be in a playoff spot.

  3. I’ve been saying lately that this feels like a team that I can talk myself into having a legit breakout second half to climb into the playoffs. This matches what my eyes see. We’ve had “moral victories” and heard about “lessons learned” after losses for 14 years, and they haven’t talked about it this year but early on it felt like there have been real responses to a LOT of adversity.

Yesterday’s game felt like a lesson stuck. Between Friday and Saturday they played 120 minutes of 110% effort hockey. I told my dad after the Friday game that I’d be happy if they went into Minnesota and played the same way, and felt like they would win more games than losing with that effort, and they really played the “gutsiest” game I’ve seen them play in years.

  4. Basically, goaltending is below what we need. We aren’t getting the saves when we need them.
