Screw Your Tank! The New York Jets Are ACTUALLY Improving!
What is going on Jet fans? Matt Oir back with another video and today I want to talk about this Jets team improving and finding a way to win on this victory Monday. The New York Jets found a way to beat the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday 27-24. And they did so without their best offensive player and Garrett Wilson. And with guys like Eric Watts and Jasier Taylor playing meaningful snaps on the defense, you have people upset about the Jets win because it drops them from the fourth pick to the seventh pick in the draft. There’s still five weeks left for that to change, by the way. And honestly, [ __ ] your tank. This is an evaluation year. It’s important for a firstear coach and GM to learn who they are building around on this team. What guys are you okay with keeping around in their roles or different roles and what do you need to add to this roster? And over the last few weeks, we’ve seen guys like John Mechy and Adie Mitchell, two newcomers, newcomers to the wide receiver room who have shown that they are keepers and should be here next year. You’ve seen Olu Fashion has quietly hit his stride as a 22-year-old playing left tackle in the NFL. shocking, maybe not a bust after what, like 14 starts in his NFL career. Arman Meu had some rookie moments this past week, but is playing at an extremely high level as a young offensive tackle in this league as a rookie. Ay Thomas, Malachi Moore, two guys from this draft class that look like decent pieces for you as third and fourth round picks. Jawan Briggs, who you traded next to nothing for, has been great and has shown that he is absolutely someone you want to keep around. The Jets are winning games and doing it on the backs of their young players right now. Guys, think you know football? Does Aaron Glenn get credit for the Chris Banjo hire? Their special teams unit has been elite. The kicker has one miss on the season and it was a 50 plus yarder in the rain yesterday. They found Austin McNamera on the scrap heap and he’s a stud. Been one of the best punters in the NFL. Isaiah Williams after a tough start to his Jets tenure has turned it around and been a great returner. Kane and Wanu whenever he’s healthy and is actually on the field is a great returner. Their coverage unit is great. Quantis Stickers has turned into a special teams ace and if you’re winning games off the back of that unit that’s that’s fine. It’s good to have a good special teams unit. that matters to teams as the Chargers when they had the number one offense and number one defense if it mattered to them that year because they they missed the playoffs because of their special teams unit. It does. It does. And I know right now it’s hard to see the light through the trees or through the forest, but having a good special teams unit matters. And you don’t have to have the number one pick in order to get a good player. I like Yes. The draft is a crapshoot and the higher you pick, the higher chance you have of landing a good player, but we saw the Jets just miss at the number two pick a couple years ago. They took Zach Wilson number two overall. Didn’t work out. Garrett Wilson was a 10th overall pick. Olu Fashionu 11th, Armanu seventh. And that’s just recent Jets history. And those are three building block pieces that the Jets were able to find in the back half of the top 10 or, you know, right at 11th overall. Does that not matter? Like as a general manager, you have to be able to find talent no matter where you’re picking in the draft. We’ve seen countless times quarterbacks who weren’t the first quarterback taken end up being the best of the draft class. You know, look look around in the division. You have Drake May went third overall. He wasn’t the first quarterback taken. Josh Allen was the what? Fourth quarterback taken. Patrick Mahomes was the second quarterback taken in his draft class. third quarterback even. No. Did he go before Watson? Doesn’t matter. Second or third? He wasn’t the first. Mitch Trabiscy went first in that draft. And sure, you know, there’s the the Joe Burrows who was the first quarterback taken that worked out. The Andrew Lux, the Pton Mannings. I get that, but it it’s not always that way. And there’s different ways you could go about trying to find your quarterback. The Jets are three and two in their last five games. After starting 0 and5, they’re three and four in the seven games they played since then. Still a losing record. I’m not throwing a parade over a three and four run. But has this team not looked significantly different in the last seven games than they did in their first five? It’s a big difference. I notice it. Don’t you want to see improvement from your head coach and the team? Not just the coaching staff, but the and the team just in general as the year goes on and what’s an evaluation year. I mean, look at it. Since the Dallas game where they dropped to 0 and5, look at their losses. You have a one-sore loss, a two-point loss to the Denver Broncos. They’re the number one seed in the AFC. You have a one-sore loss to the seven and six Panthers, who just beat the Rams, arguably the best team in the NFC. Clearly, the Panthers are better than what we thought they would be this year. And the two games they also lost, the two other games they lost in this stretch, you were in until the fourth quarter against the teams like the Patriots and the Ravens who have significantly better quarterbacks than you and more talented rosters. A lot of weird stuff has happened to the Jets, especially early in the season. You had the fluky fumble against Pittsburgh that lost them that game. The Xavier Gibson fumble game. The blown lead against the Bucks after that blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown. The Brilan Allen fumble against Miami. That that game changes if the Jets punch it in. Losing to Denver because they didn’t make a quarterback change at the half or going into the fourth quarter. I’m not saying you take all those games and flip it. That’s probably unfair. But if you just take two of those, you’re looking at the Jets at five and seven and a much more normal looking football team and no one’s talking about the tank. But you’re three and nine. And you know what? I get it. You’re going to there’s always going to be fans who want to see the team lose to get the highest draft point. But you all saw the Lions model, right? The one that the Jets are clearly trying to replicate with the Aaron Glennhire. They were bad through the first half of the year before they finally turned it around in the second half to finish their seasons. In their first two years, honestly, both in 2021 and 2022, you have Miami and Jacksonville and New Orleans as your next three games. There’s some winnable games here, which is what I was saying, but even before this game against Atlanta, and they won at home. You know, I know Miami is playing much better football now. They’ve looked better than the, you know, what the they looked like before they got their first win against the Jets in week four. But I mean, is that not a winnable game for you at home? A warm weather team coming up to play in the elements in the Northeast in December? Jacksonville is a jackal and hide team. I think Jacksonville’s better. I I wouldn’t expect the Jets to win that game, but you know, no one’s looking at the Jacksonville Jaguars and going, “Oh my god, they have no chance.” New Orleans, they stink, too. New Orleans is horrendous. They might win a couple more games. And if after going 0 and7, they win two more games down the stretch here and they finish their year five and five after 0 and seven start. Does that not mean anything to you? That’s not something where you go, okay, you know, this is a coach who’s going to be here next year and yeah, it looked ugly and it didn’t start all that great, but you’re a young team, one of the youngest teams in the NFL, and you went five and five over your last 10 games. Can you build off of some of that momentum and and add some pieces with the copious amounts of both draft case and cap and draft capital and cap space that you have? If they go five and 12, they finish with the same record they had last year with the veteran heavy team, you know, Aaron Rogers, Hall of Famer, Dvonte Adams, Assan Reic, Tyron Smith, and on and on and on it goes. Doesn’t matter that you got started 0 and7 and you what? you finish with the same record you did a year ago with significantly less name talent on your roster coaching job doesn’t get any credit for that and look if they were to lose out after starting two and nine or whatever it was to this year in year one of a head coach like are you feeling great about Aaron Glenn going into year two because he was going to be here no matter what so with knowing your coach is going to be here no matter what does improvement not matter to you the light switch just doesn’t magically turn on because you go you you landed a top two pick. You draft one guy in the top two of the draft and then you go, “Okay, now it’s time to win, guys. We’re going to flip the light switch on. We got to start trying.” And the coaching staff has to figure it out. That’s not how sports work. You can’t be mad at Aaron Glenn saying that he sucks and you want him to be fired after starting 0 and5 and then be mad because they’re starting to win games because the coaching staff and the team has improved as the year goes on. That’s just stupid. It’s incredibly naive to think that way. And again, I I’ve said this like if the Jets were to lose games, clearly not the worst thing to happen because yes, your draft pick does improve. But you look at that as the silver lining, not the goal. The goal isn’t to lose games. But if you are in a year where it’s an evaluation year and you it’s like, you know what, we don’t have it. We’re we’re limited at the quarterback, which hello, the Jets clearly are. They’re starting Tyrod Taylor right now and they’ve had Justin Fields play quarterback for a majority of their year. Most weeks the Jets are not going to have the better quarterback in the matchups, but they’re finding ways to win football games because they have an elite special teams unit and some of their young guys are are stepping up and making plays. That matters to me. So, for that, I say screw the tank and let’s see what happens through the remaining five games of the season. Let me know what you think in the comments. I’m Matt Ori. I don’t care about draft. I don’t care about offseason. I care about winning. Finish season strong and get our QB this offseason. That’s all I care about
Let's just say, do not trade those picks this year.
Aaron Glenn needs to build a culture of winning. That is more important than tanking for a high pick with no guarantees. Victory Monday feels good.
I agree. Fuck tanking.
The Jets have more wins in November than the Cheifs, Colts, and Bucs… Just a fun fact.
Obviously, it's not time to break out the champagne… But the improvement is showing.
I believe after the 2023 season Douglas and Saleh thought the team arrived when they accomplished nothing. The players were not humbled and got their butts kicked in 24 and 25. I think AG keeps them humble and working hard.
Vikings are hoping their top pick, JJ, ain’t gonna flop and crash out.
No one wanted them to tank. We want a superbowl
Yessss!!!! Matt, I'm with you. Same Propeller hat wearing complainer's, don't like when we take an L and don't like it when we get a DUB. Can we Save the mental therapy
Well said Matt. Enough with putting the draft above winning. We have to break out of this loser mindset and cycle that we’ve been on season after season.
I want them to fight and show grit. Show the league that they have no quit in them and believe in coach.
Regardless of what they do in the draft or offseason, we have oddly seen enough to trust Moug and AG. Whatever route they take, im riding with.
There is definite sign of progress but we are still a long way off. I say 3-4 years is our window to be a very good team.
I've emotionally detached myself from the team until they win the Super Bowl with a top 5 offensive line, a top 5 defensive line, and a 6'4" or 6'5" accurate, durable, mobile gunslinger at QB.
And the Jets will need to TANK, trade DOWN, and pick up extra picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Rounds of the next two or three drafts to do that.
Cheering for winning useless games (against other losing teams), for more losing seasons (15 consecutive and counting), and doing the same exact thing since 2011 is the definition of STUPID. THAT'S ABOUT AS STUPID AS IT GETS.
Wash, rinse, and repeat. Over and over and over and over again.
Josh Allen was the best quarterback in his draft class just as much as Fernando Mendoza is the best quarterback in this upcoming draft class.
The tape doesn't lie. Just watch the film. Stop overthinking all this nonsense about stats.
Does the guy get injured? Does he have injuries? Can he take hits? Is he accurate?
I don't want Glenn fired and all this made-up story being conjured up.
I would like for him to succeed in two seasons when he has a team with real NFL talent trying to dominate the league for the next five years.
If Jets continue to win they will make stupid choices in the offseason and come up short in the long term in-season.
Which is what the Jets have been doing for more than a decade now.
Getting Sam Darnold was a great idea (even though Josh Allen is better just by watching his college film) but trading up for Sam Darnold is the worst idea.
That's how sports work. Do you see how sports work?
You can always remind yourself of that by watching some Seattle Seahawks games these upcoming weeks.
I have no expectations for the Jets and the new regime.
If they continue to win, and destroy their draft strategy for getting Mendoza, then that will be the same ol' Jets because they will have to trade away picks at some point for the lack of the talent on the 53-man squad.
Which of course are the big veteran headlines Woody Johnson needs to sell tickets and merchandise.
Then Glenn will be fired in about three to four seasons.
If the Jets go through the same process of not tanking, trading away picks, signing old guys like Nick Folk, and firing Glenn and crew in three to four seasons then you can bet your balls, AND a double dose of Jameson, Matt O'Leary I will be reminding you of it in the future.
If fact, I will take a screen shot of this message for later.
Have a nice evening Matt. Salud 🥃🥃😏😏.
You know what’s been nice? The Jets looking prepared and ready to fight and not getting blown out of the building in first quarter. This team looks ready to play. Like it or not coaching is a huge part of that. Whether they win or not we are in almost every game and you are right Matt they are getting better every week
I see at least 5 total wins if tyrod stays healthy
GREAT VIDEO MATT! JETS FAN NEEEEEEEEEEEED TO HEAR THIS ! I WITH YOU ONE BILLION MILLION PERCENT ! WINNING MATTERS!
😂 JETS going to be Trash another 10 yrs it’s profitable!!
This is similar to Tony Dungy's start with the Bucs. In 1996 I was moved from NY (after 42 yrs) to Tampa. At that point the Jets were 1-7 and the Bucs were 1-7. The Jets never won another game and this ended the miserable Kotite era. The Bucs finished the season 5-3 to go 6-10 and began the team that won the SB in 2002. Things progress more quickly these days, but the plan is still valid. Thanks for another good vid.
Thank you, Matt!
Your a COMPLETE MORON!!! Win meaningless games to get a worse draft pick. Yeah that makes a lot of sense. 🤦🤦🤦 Your what's wrong with Jets fans.
Matt, I couldn't agree more to worry about whether 4 or 7 is a waste of time, I believe this current coaching staff has a very good eye for talent. I'm in for the long haul with this group. The enthusiasm in the locker room after the game tells this 50+ year fan that we are on the right track. ( Sadly I have said that a lot over the last 50. Lol)
Yes fuck tanking. Play to win. And about the draft how about instead of trying to go for 1 QB How about building a team. Many of the best HOF QBs wasnt the first pick first round. Just build and develop a QB
I’m okay with not tanking, long as they are willing to come off all that draft capital for a QB. Trade all those firsts away
At this point I would call Cincinnati up and offer 3-5 of the first round picks the next 2 years for Burrow and Chase. They may actually do it
Daniel Jones is a free agent after this season; Why not give him a 3-year contract and draft QBs the next 2 drafts and give time to develop.
Nice to see them playing Watts. He’s gotta be better than Baron I’d assume. Glad they’re not being stubborn about a guy just because they drafted him.
As much as it’s nice to have the top pick, if u root for and aim for a number 1 tank every year… it never ends. At some point you gotta stop tanking. Let’s hope it ends here
I’m not saying AD Mitchell is gonna be a high end WR2 next year, I’m saying he’s good enough you don’t need to spend big money or premium pick on WR in 2026, especially with so many holes gonna need 2 linebackers, at least one edge, a safety, TE2 and maybe 2 guards. DT and backup tackle id say more pressing than WR right now
I wanna see improvement period. The Draft is overrated.
Matt, you are right on with this commentary. Good work Bro and thank you for the clarity we all need. Go Jets!
The Jets future is in fact SO BRIGHT…
Optometrist's are warning fans NOT to look directly at it with the naked eye 😎
Yeah its always eff the Tank until its another 2,3,4 years down the line no Qb in place and everyone is fired again. This organization doesnt learn and its the definition of insanity. We need a Qb and we always have to get the feel good win for now instead of thinking of the feel good for years in a row. Weve evaluated enough we need help at every position period. So what more do we need to know. Got the Oline and a RB and. Wr we need a Qb period. But we bumped ourselves out of a top Qb and maybe settle for a consolation prize. Its typical Jets fashion.
this was an incredibly great take. great job, matt. some of your best work yet. the goal is and will always be to win.
As Jets fans we need to stop worrying about drafting a top QB without a complete team. When are we gonna learn???
Yes! Screw the tank. Make incremental improvements, get better. They don’t need the first pick in the draft to get better. There are still 5 games left. I’m looking forward to competitive games and some wins.
Fun fact: the Jets have more wins than the Chiefs, Colts and Bucs since November 1st lol
I understand both sides of the coin but for the tank crowd out there: guys! We have a ton of draft capital for the next 2 years. Let’s root for Glenn and Co. to build the culture and win some fucking football games. This is the time where we should see marginal improvement and buy in.
