I think the goal is Williams for the 8th. Stearns is a bullpen guy and Cohen has the $$$ to pay both him and Diaz.
The only way to feel about Williams signing for the Mets is that there’s no way BOTH Alonso and Diaz will be back for 2026
Bring back Diaz and this is a great 1-2 punch. Come on David don’t F this up
With Diaz, we have a 7-8-9 ladder of Minter, Williams, Diaz.
Without Diaz, he’s a good addition but I will be sad.
Better bring back Diaz.
The fact that all my yankee buddies in the group chat are laughing at this pretty much says it all. Dude hasn’t been good since Alonso broke him in the WC series
He is not a replacement for Diaz since Pete tore out his soul in Milwaukee.
As a setup man of course I’d be delighted to have him
There goes Diaz then…
By David Stearns’ history, that’s closer money. 🤔
This is just not a smart use of money at all considering how bad Devin Williams was last year and the fact that this is closer level money (3rd highest paid reliever in the league) and Williams won’t be closing.
We have our closer in Diaz already, find other relievers either through trades or our own farm system.
I love this if we also bring back Diaz. I hate it if we don’t and if the plan is to have Williams be the closer. He’s only a few months younger than Diaz and it wouldn’t make any sense not to just give Diaz the extra two years and $40 million when he’s proven he can pitch here, clearly wants to be back, and when Williams had a bad 2025 and his numbers, both counting stats and analytics, showed concerning signs.
He only had one bad year so it could be a very good move depending on what else we do
Awesome signing. He is still very very good. Reliever results are volatile – as was his year last year. He has every shot to be as good as Diaz in the next 3 years. Having them both would be awesome – hope we get it done, but if we don’t this is great insurance.
Stearns is ride or die with his Brewers picks, huh?
here’s the setup man helsley was supposed to be before he shit the bed repeatedly. of course williams has never pitched more than 60 innings in a season, and well, we still have carlos mendoza, so he should be hitting 60 innings around june…
Good for him, but I am astounded. He got this much. He was horrible for the Yankees.
Cheaper than Diaz is going to get…
Have to hope that the new coaching staff can use the ‘pitching lab’ concept as well as the staff did before June of last year.
Or else Cohen just paid 15 million per year for a guy who is going to have a 5 ERA.
If he is going to be the setup guy in the 8th I am fine with this.
If he is intended to be a Diaz replacement I am not
Well our bullpen needed to get better and that’s what it just did.
I hope this isn’t it though.
Vibes wise this is so weird though considering he gave up one of the craziest homers in Mets history.
They always say who was first to report something but who was last?
I ragged on Williams’ 2025 season but if you look under the hood, you still see great stuff that you like. I’m optimistic with the Mets still in on re-signing Diaz and seeing how this pitching staff can have him throw his stuff in the zone more.
I like this. If he returns to form then this will be a damn steal.

Who is who?
what the actual fuck are we doing man
Teach him something that breaks in on a lefty/away from a righty.
David Stearns on the precipice of “beast” or complete loser, depending on his next move
