[Passan] Reliever Devin Williams and the New York Mets are in agreement on a three-year contract that guarantees more than $50 million, sources tell ESPN. The deal contains no opt-outs or options. He’ll be there and pitching at the back end — and maybe in the ninth inning, depending on Edwin Diaz.

  1. A lot of money for a guy with a 4.8 era, but hopefully that was just a case of the pressure of playing for the Yankees

  2. Can’t wait to see Stearns smirking at the next press conference confirming his signing after Diaz goes to the Dodgers

  3. My not-brain doesn’t like it but my brain says that he’s a good pitcher and this is a good deal

  4. If Alonso stays with the Mets, that’s one way for him to get over his trauma I guess

  5. this guy was a historically nasty swing and miss reliever then had a terrible first half of 25. Good move for a team with an infinite budget.

  6. I’ll zag, I like this. Last year was a weird one but if you take that out he’s quite possibly the best reliever of the 2020s, and as others have noted he still had stretches of looking really good last season so it’s not like it was a complete disaster. If you get a top closer for 3/45 that’s worth the risk, especially when you’re the Mets and that money means nothing. Good get

  7. I really wanted to root for him last year. He took it like a champ anytime he sucked, which I appreciated. $50 million for a guy who had an ERA of 5+ is wild.

(I’m gonna be so mad when he has a 1.2 ERA for the fucking Mets)

  8. Who else have the Yankees recently had for just one season that could fill a hole on the mets roster?

  9. This is not a bad contract? 16.6 mil for only 3 years when other closets are getting close to 19 woth 5 years.

  10. I liked it at the time too, but this makes me feel even better about the Phillies deal for Duran at the deadline.

Bullpen market is gonna be a wild ride.

  11. I am guessing they think last year was an anomaly and he will pitch like he did in the three or four years before.

  12. This is a great deal for Williams. Not sure about the years though. Relievers are so volatile that I couldn’t feel comfortable with the years. Also raises the floor for a Diaz deal.

  13. They would be the ones that benefit off one of the easiest foreseeable bounce backs ever. Good for them and Devin

  14. Good for him for getting the money. I am surprised at this because it does not seem like a good fit. He didn’t seem up to the NY spotlight with the Yankees, and it’s not like that’s much different with the Mets, who have enormous expectations and scrutiny on them as well. He seems like an incongruous personality with the big characters in that clubhouse.

  15. Well our bullpen needed to get better and that’s what it just did.

I hope this isn’t it though.

Vibes wise this is so weird though considering he gave up one of the craziest homers in Mets history.

  16. Him signing with the Mets is really gonna hurt his chances of blowing more games for the Yankees. Not a fan.
