RED WINGS FANS MAY NOT WANT TO HEAR THIS… A BRUTALLY HONEST ASSESSMENT OF STEVE YZERMAN THIS SEASON

H. So, it’s time to get brutally honest here, people. But before we dive into that, I wanted to give a big shout out over to the Hockey Town Rundown podcast. They do some pretty good work, and I stumbled across a tweet posted by one of their hosts earlier this week. It’s a brutally honest take on the Red Wings and Steve Eisermanman. And I thought that this was interesting enough to bring up here on the YouTube channel. So, big shout out over to Hockey Town Rundown as well as Zack Traven from the show. This is a long one and I stumbled across this. It’s got 16,000 views and you know, there are some pretty good conversations that you could bring up in response to some of these thoughts. So, I’ll let Zach take the floor and we’ll read his tweet together, shall we? Here it is. a brutally honest assessment of Steve Eerman and the Detroit Red Wings. Zach says, “I get plenty of people saying to me, you are not critical enough on Steve Eerman.” Okay, here you go. Steve Eerman has made some questionable moves this off season. You traded a second plus a fourth plus Peter Morazzic to get Gibson and let Alex Lion walk, who has a 3.07 07 GAA and a .907 save percentage in 12 games played. That would be leading the team. Now, before we continue with the rest of the points here, that is something that we probably should have mentioned at some point earlier on in the season. Amidst all these conversations of Red Wings goalenders being bad, not up to snuff, can’t tell but this, John Gibson that, you talk about Alex Lion. He’s been doing really well this season with the Buffalo Sabres. And I wanted to also dive into just that conversation over here. Lion, 32 years old, playing for Buffalo. He has an 899 save percentage. Okay, it dipped a little bit from when the tweet was originally made. That’s because of two straight games with a 783 save percentage and a 333. But if you take a look at how the season opened up for Lion, I mean, he had a 933 against Boston, 919, shut out against Florida, 900, 912, 897, 818, then a 943. I mean, this guy was nothing short of a solid NHL goalender, which is something you can’t really say about some of the other guys that exist in the Redwing system at the moment. Okay, no shade at all to John Gibson, but this is what the tweet continues to say. The Hamik experiment would have been good if he was the seventh D, but he unfortunately continues to be rotated as the sixth D with Jacob Bernard Docker. I said many times if he plays more than five games played, there’s a bigger issue with the team. He is at 15 games and is a minus 10 plus minus. Now, we’re not going to sit here and pretend like plus minus is the be all and end all, but Travis Hamick has not been good. So, yeah, you could probably agree with that sentiment there. JVR has finally found somewhat of a groove, but was MIA for the first month and a half of the season, albeit he didn’t train with the team until the season started. Mason Appleton has reverted back to a checking role where the offense has completely disappeared. But here’s a reminder. This is kind of what people wanted. Steve did what he could to leave room for rookies and other players to earn their way onto the lineup. ASP, Finny, MBN, Danielson. More than likely, we’ll see more if this team continues their trajectory of the season. players on the team with less than 164 games played in the NHL, which is two full seasons. You’ve got Edmonson, Aljo, JBD, ASP, Finny, Danielson, and MBN, who was on the team and then who got sent down. Zach says almost onethird of this roster is still getting used to the NHL. This is to be expected and it will happen. But from a veteran standpoint, we cannot just expect Eerman to wave a magic wand and expect him to make this team better based on what we expect out of him. He got what he could get without potentially hurting the franchise for years down the line. And don’t forget that it takes two to tango. Not every one of your favorite free agents is going to want to come to Detroit. Blame the GM all you want, but getting that player to commit to one spot where there are 30 other choices isn’t the greatest odds of getting the player you might want. Essentially, what this thought is is kind of addressing two Red Wings fans perceptions at the moment. You’ve got a crowd of folks, and I’m not even saying these are two separate crowds of folks. They could be the same, but you’ve got one idea that says, “Hey, Stevie Y, the Wings are not good. Add players. Make them better. Grab the necessary talent and inject it onto this team to allow them to be better. And then you have another idea that in a way contradicts that that says, “Hey, you just got to get younger. Let these young guys come in. Let them develop. Let them get up to speed. And then we can start to take competing and contending seriously as a franchise. But I like what Zach does over here. Even though there were guys that were added and that haven’t necessarily been the most amazing, you can say Hamik, you can say JVR took a while to get going. You can say Appleton has regressed, but this is kind of what people wanted. Room for the rookies, room for the young guys, and a roster that was relatively young put together on paper. And they’re relatively inexperienced, too. almost a third of the roster is still getting used to the National Hockey League. And so ultimately, I think it’s a pretty eyeopening thought that allows us to just look at the Red Wings more as how they are rather than with the improvements that need to be made. Yes, it is true the goalending needs to be better. Yes, it’s true. There is somewhat of a bizarre lack of drive that exists in some moments of this hockey team’s execution. That is certainly a questionable coaching, leadership, personnel issue, but it’s not something that can be directly addressed by adding a guy or adding two guys or adding three guys or removing some of the guys that are on the team right now. I think there are bigger fish to fry when it comes to addressing the status quo of the Detroit Red Wings and specifically on that work ethic engagement issue. I mean, a lot of Red Wings fans have been saying it. It’s been kind of there for a while. It’s been multiple years of that kind of stuff going on. Heading back over onto the tweet over here, Zach says he’ll close off with this. Remember when Steven Stamco was a UFA and everyone was pissed that Steve didn’t get him here because the narrative was Ilick is too cheap? Well, Stamco has seven points in 23 games and a plus minus of – 10 this year. So, for the sake of this post, what would you have done and what do you think Steve Eisermanman should have done differently? Go back, look at the past UFA classes and trade options and let’s have a real conversation about this. Now, I think the right answer would be to take a bet on every guy that was guaranteed to being good, like Justin Brazzo, a Morgan Geeky, like all the diamonds in the rough that ended up actually providing significant value. That’s what you could do with hindsight. But of course, that’s with hindsight. You can’t say that Morgan Geeki was going to be a top NHL goal scorer back when he was sent away from wherever it was he was before to Boston. At the end of the day though, this is a pretty interesting dissection of Stevie Y and what he has done so far. It’s true that some of these moves are kind of bizarre and probably mistakes, but when you look at the team and the problems that I think a lot of fans have with this team, there are a number of things where it’s like, yeah, well, if you get one, you can’t necessarily have the other. If you want to get the young guys, you can’t necessarily add all these extra pieces. But then again, is that more important to this team right now? You can let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. Again, big shout over to Zack Traven and the Hockey Town Rundown podcast because of course they were the folks that provided the tweet that I thought was really interesting to read here. So, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. A brutally honest assessment of Steve Eisermanman and the Red Wings. How do you feel about this entire idea? Thoughts in the comment section. And I hope you enjoyed this Vish Roll 9.

  1. While I don't disagree with the assertion that Lyon would be leading the team with his current numbers, how is the defense playing in front of Lyon versus how our defense is playing in front of Gibson? How would Lyon fare if he had this defensive system in front of him? Seeing how Buffalo has defended against us versus how we've "defended" against them, I'm gonna guess his numbers would be worse, and we'd have people clamoring for Gibson once more.

  2. I know it's been a long time since the Red Wings have been good I've been watching for 35 years now so I grew up watching the 25 straight years of playoffs I get it. We as a fan base need to stay patient he is building a really good young team from the ground up kinda like they did when Stevie Y was drafted. I think next year will finally be this teams break out year. We are not out of playoffs yet so there is still hope that Gibson and Talbot can get there crap together and the young guys start to get the NHL pace of play down we might get dangerous this year yet. Let's Go Red Wings!!

  3. Analytics say Kasper doing right things. Shots from slot, etc Whole red wing team is 6th in expected goals but 26th in scoring so what is going on? Coaching?

  4. Fair assessment. I also think you’re right, because I am a fan who has been in both camps. I have strongly advocated for the youth movement, but I have also been pro free agent AND reluctant to be willing to trade top prospects. Sitting back and looking at it objectively and not as a fanboy, I can see a team being built the right way with depth being created at the NHL and AHL levels. With good coaching and buy-in from the players, the Wings should eventually be a competitive team, an annual playoff team for several seasons. They will be in a position to reload when someone becomes too expensive, as well as a premier destination for free agents. After this past offseason there were several rumors of some top free agents absolutely rejecting Detroit from their short-list of landing destinations. Why? Yzerman has the reputation of being a tough negotiator as far as money and term, and Detroit fights to stay at the top of the middle of the pack right now. I think Detroit needs to continue to be very careful with the assets of prospects and players until a solid deal on a good player with contract control can happen. Otherwise we give a lot up for someone who doesn’t want to be here and splits as soon as they have the opportunity. I love him, but think about DeBrincat’s situation in Ottawa. The only way he would have stayed there would be if they would have massively overpaid. Hopefully we see a few games in Detroit from some of the more “veteran” prospects in GR, as well as some starts from actual veterans like Leonard and Shine.

  5. All that to say we need Cossa or Augustine to be great and fast. We have tried all the used goalies in the league. Until we have a for sure #1 goalie the struggle will continue. I agree that Stevie has made all the moves he could without sacrificing even more of the future. Folks wanted the young guys to play. So be patient a minute longer while the goalies get it together.

  6. Great conversation.

I believe there’s truth to the criticism’s of the pro scouting department but as fans we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes or what players Yzerman was pursuing but didn’t want to come to Detroit. I just have a hard time criticizing Steve when we don’t know all the details.
We’re just at a point in the rebuild where our young guys need to get NHL reps, there’s no way around it.
Maybe fans need to readjust the expectations for the season.

  7. All of the sweeds are Soft. One of our top Austrians is struggling so bad he's on the third line. It's really not Steve's fault. I didn't think the trading pool had much to offer.. if Hughes comes to Detroit that would change everything.

  8. Any goaltender on this team is going to look bad. The team is soft, they give up way too many odd man rushes and then let guys just stand out in front of the net where they can tip in shots that the goalie has no realistic chance of saving.

  9. Been saying letting king Lyon go was a mistake from the get go… also that signing the Hammer was the best play for our opposition possible… just another one of many horrible FA signings and decisions. Drafting is the only thing done better than average.

  10. It seems to me Illitch doesn’t like hockey as his father did. Maybe RW is his second choice. He is making money on that (not a champion team but still profit – as a company) and that’s fine for him.
