THE HERD Colin Cowherd STUNNED, Denver Broncos ARE NOT GOOD And Are JUST LUCKY | NFL
On paper, kind of a a weak game, but it turned out to be kind of interesting. Wild until the end. Um, it went goes to overtime and the Broncos get super lucky as Nick Bonito bats down what should have been a walk-in touchdown for Jeremy Nichols in Washington. Mariota didn’t totally read it well. Didn’t lob it up high enough. Here’s Shawn Payeyton after the game when he was asked about escaping. I’m sure both teams when we look at the film um probably did some things we didn’t want to do, but uh those guys um came out and fought hard. So did our guys. And uh you know, we made a play at the end. Uh that was the difference. We don’t escape. We won. The journey of a good team season involves games like this. And um and then you believe that you can do it again. Let me let me defend Denver here. Okay. All right. So now the season 17 games, so we all acknowledge the first game of the year doesn’t even matter. Raiders beat the Patriots. You start playing well. A great example is the Rams. Stafford had 30 touchdowns and two picks. Do you think he was going to end up with 40 touchdowns and three picks? Eventually you travel out east, you get caught flatfooted. Carolina has to win off a Ner’s loss and all of a sudden the Rams defense doesn’t have a ton of energy. And you’re like, Denver won the game. Okay, Denver is a number one seed. They’re they’re not going to play with the same intensity. All those guys know Washington’s on a backup quarterback. When you have a 17game season, this is not college football, as you well know, where you have advantages with athletes. These are all pro players. And so I’m watching that game. It could have gone either way. But I’ll tell you, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Shawn Payeyton and Ben Johnson win all these close games or Andy Reid did last year. They are very good at several things. They were just bad defensively by their standards last night. The Rams were bad yesterday by their standards. Bryce Young 15 to 20. Yeah, I mean listen, the one-sore games 8-2. You saw the stat on the screen, 5-0 when trailing in the fourth. We can say that’s intestinal fortitude and toughness and smarts. Well, you know what? The Chiefs last year unbelievable in one-score games. This year, wouldn’t you know it, they can’t win any of them. They’re really struggling in one score games. So this stuff kind of goes back and forth. You have to admit the ball is bouncing their way a lot. And I cannot wait to see who they play if they get the two seed. I think we think the Patriots will probably be the one because of the schedule. If they play Buffalo, I’m taking Denver. I’m taking Denver. We’ll be headtohead on that one. If they play the Could they play the Ravens? I don’t know if the Ravens could could get the wild card cuz that division’s kind of wonky right now. We’ll see. I don’t know if the Chiefs play Denver round three. If the Chiefs Wait, what? Are you taking Denver? I I just I I think we need to pump the brakes on how dominant this team is. Enjoy it while it lasts. I see you grinning. You know the story here. Like this is not a great football team. Colin, this is not a great football team. Okay. Oh boy. Oh my god. It’s okay. It’s Monday. Calm down. Relax. Take a deep breath. Okay, before I absolutely shred this and attack this and destroy this, Denver Broncos fans, please do not forget to subscribe and watch the full length of the video. When you do that, it is the best possible way to support the growth of this channel so I can keep making the best Denver Broncos content that I can. When you guys watch the full length of the video, this is literally what happens. The views go through the roof. The subscribers go through the roof. And again, it’s not about just chasing views. It’s not about just chasing subscribers. It’s about building the best possible community that we can so we can have awesome conversations and be firmly rooted in this sports world. Okay, now I got to go through this cuz I got to absolutely destroy this. First off, do you know how many upsets there were this week? It was upset after upset after upset after upset after upset after upset after upset after upset. And the Broncos said, “That’s cool. Not us. That’s cool. Not us.” Um, the Commanders have been a mess because of injuries, because of players in and out of the lineup, but the core of this team, specifically with Jaden, and to be fair, Jaden’s not there. They went to the NFC Championship game. This isn’t some disaster of a franchise. This isn’t some franchise circling the drain at all. So, al albeit the Commanders should be an easier team to beat right now, they’re not c they’re not the Cleveland Browns, okay? They’re they’re not this absolute mess of a franchise. They’re just they’re just not. Okay. So, they’re they’re they’re on the table is always a tough gritty game. The whole luck about that play um you know for the two-point conversion and and whatnot. First off, like that’s that that’s how that’s worked. that that’s how that’s designed. You know, he’s hot. Like that’s that’s how that’s going to unfold. You’re betting that your defense is going to be able to get to the quarterback, be able to do exactly what Bonito did. That’s what you’re banking on. That’s the deal with the devil that you’re making in that moment. And it worked there. That wasn’t luck. We’re we’re having a little bit of revisionist history here where it’s it’s one thing if there was like an extra beat there then you could say ah there was there was there was there was no beat there. Okay. So like let’s just let’s just get that out of the way here. Now in terms of these one score games and whatnot. I was explaining this to my to my parents over over Thanksgiving weekend. Um cuz you know we’re all everyone’s watching football games. We’re like look how close this game is. look how close this game is. And I’m like, well, that’s that’s the NFL. I think people don’t really realize that that like it’s like the vast majority of games are close like that. They’re all like within one score. They all give you this feeling of like any team can win right now. And so what I said was about these one-sore games is, you know, it’s both when you’re winning a lot of one-sore games, it’s both the quality of the team and how good you are, how well coached you are, the players, etc., etc., and it is also luck. And what I mean by that, I don’t mean luck and as in like, oh, look, I found a dollar bill. It’s like the universal luck, the the the football god’s luck where it’s just like the ball does need to bounce your way a little bit, right? The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t just magically lose the ability to um you know, win one score games, but it’s not like now it was just well clearly it was all luck that they were winning. It’s like, no, you do. You just It’s It’s the perfect example of this is, and I’ I’ve used this example a ton because I think it really is the perfect example, is basketball is Steph Curry shooting threes. It’s like it’s luck in a got to have it game, you know, game seven. It’s luck that he shot 8 for 12 from three. Whereas there’s absolutely situations when Steph Curry, that same monster of a player, shoots two for 10. And it’s not like he choked. He wasn’t forcing shots. They just weren’t falling. They just weren’t falling. And it’s just like it’s just the way it’s just the way it happens. It’s just it’s just just the basketball gods. It’s like I you know and that’s what happens in a lot of these one-sore games or you know in in really in in every football game has a has a has a has a semblance of that. It’s like why did that moment did the receiver have a drop. You know Christian McAffrey fumbles in the Super Bowl. It’s like you’re not banking on Christian McCaffrey. Why did he is it because he choked couldn’t handle the moment? No. The football gods were just like hey you’re going to fumble right now just because that’s what happens right. Oh, you’re going to have a weird bounce and it’s going to hit off your leg and it’s going to be a muffed punt. It’s like why happens, Green Law? You’re going to tear your I think your Achilles. You’re going to tear your Achilles in the Super Bowl. You’re done now for the game. Why? Just because, man. Just because. It’s like that’s what I mean when I when I when I talk about luck in this situation. And so, yeah, the Broncos are on the receiving end of some luck. Um, but that doesn’t mean that it’s all luck or that there’s no skill involved, right? Okay, just like how it was the same thing with the Kansas City Chiefs, uh, or, you know, whatever teams you want to use as as reference points. A couple years ago is the Minnesota Vikings were winning a ton of one-score games. Last season it was the Washington Commanders winning a ton of one-sore games. Um, and now this year it’s the Denver Broncos. And so it’s it’s it’s a mix between you need the ball, you need Steph Curry to be hot, right? You need him to be hot. Um, and you also need a Steph Curry, you know? Like there you go. That that’s how you sum that up. You know, hopefully Steph Curry can be a hot this game and hopefully you have a Steph Curry. That’s how you win a lot of one-sore games, but there’s absolutely stretches where it’s just like, well, he keeps it out. Why? It just is. Just the way it goes. Uh so you know to just say that this team’s not that good or that we’re just now it’s it’s fool’s gold because they’re winning these games where since it was a close game against the Washington Commanders that now somehow means that like uh oh this is this is trouble. It’s just it’s just an absurd statement to make. And I’ll and I’ll end here right now and say this. In years in the past this is exactly what I said about the Chicago Bears. years in the past um when it felt like a lot of these other great teams that had been around for a while were solidified. Um the Bills, the Ravens, the Chiefs, the Eagles, the 49ers, you really felt like, okay, those teams are going to have an advantage. They’ve been here before. You know, they’ve been to multiple Super Bowls, won Super Bowls, whatever it may be. Quarterbacks established, coaching staff, culture, etc. Think all that is established. you know, they’re they’re going to be tough to beat. Right now, all of these teams, everyone’s playing so uh a large degree of inconsistency that this is the best time to be this version of the Broncos because this is still not the best version of the Broncos. This is still not the best version of Bo Knicks. That’s okay. This is year two for him, but this is the best year to be this version of this team because you’re abs winning a Super Bowl is absolutely on the table. Who are you potentially going up against? Drake May who’s also in a similar situation. It’s like, okay, it’s one thing if this was the same Kansas City Chiefs that you knew. It’s one thing if this was the same Bills team that you knew, the same Ravens team that you knew, right? And and it’s and it’s just not right now. And the way I look at it is all these top teams right now, Collins top 10, they’re all equally boomer. I could see them all absolutely go on a run and win a Super Bowl or absolutely lose first round. I that’s how I see it right now. I mean, trying to predict the playoffs, I have no idea. Seriously, the Broncos play the Patriots? I got no idea. Super Bowl, Broncos versus Seattle, no idea. Rams versus Broncos, no idea. Patriots versus Rams, no idea. Eagles versus the Broncos, no idea cuz I don’t I don’t I just I don’t I I’m okay saying that. I really am. I’m totally comfortable saying like I don’t know, man. Like how Colin’s like I’m taking the Broncos. I’ve been so I’ve been high on the Broncos every single week. I can’t say that about any team right now. Each team feels like that. It’s like I don’t know what version are you going to get of them. They all feel like they could absolutely win a Super Bowl or absolutely just go home, right? The Bills either feel like they could hang 35, Josh Allen puts up six touchdowns himself, or there’s nothing doing for him. Bo Nicks is either looking like Josh Allen or this offense just can’t get anything going. Drake May’s out there wheeling a deal. Like it’s just like I don’t know. Matthew Stafford looked unstoppable. Literally could not stop turning the ball over. It’s a crazy year right now. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I read every single comment. So whether you agree with me or disagree with me, either way, it’s getting some discussions. Let’s get in some fights. But ultimately, let’s just have some fun. Wyoming 9 in a row isn't luck😂.
Last three minutes about how wide open the Super Bowl race is this year s spot on. There are no juggernauts out there this year. Every team with at least 8 wins looks like they could plausibly go on a hot run, play above their heads, and win it all, like 2012 Ravens. And every one of those teams could also plausibly go one-and-done.
Thank you for that
You know what is what and I enjoy it
New sub….keep grinding for our Broncos!
Mile High 🫡
Broncos made plays when it mattered on offense, defense, and special teams when it mattered! Were the Broncos playing their best football, absolutely not, but when they had to, they followed through. That is what good teams do, because they are coached well. They have not reached their full potential. They are playing one down at a time. That’s okay. Winning is the goal. Doesn’t always have to be a blowout. A win is a win.
There is just a lot of haters and I'm glad you dive deeper into the broncos they deserve praise for winning games . People forgot it's a league of win or go home so again love what you are about
Why do so many of these national media dudes know so little about the sports they cover? I'm continuously amazed at how dumb some of them are & wondering how they can watch this league for years & still not understand it.
Lucky? It's called a great play!
New Sub… Go Broncos… the announcers made a big deal of the trip sack… I guess they didn't see the arm around the defensive player's neck…
We have a lot of flaws but the Broncos are clutch. They will have to fix some of those flaws to get to the SB.
Not a great football team lol sure ask how any teams would love to be 10-2 and have Bo Nix.
I have been a Broncos fan since 1977, let that sink in. Not a good team? Define a good team? Record? This isnt college this isnt style points this is NFL and professionalism. 3-8 teams can win in the NFL that's why win your division is priority 1, win a better seed and the Broncos are doing just that. Please this guy on Collin is a gambler and a hack pod caster who found a career and hes more wrong than right
I have spent an entire career in sales, I have heard of "luck" all the time, luck means your in a position to win the moment and you were in the right place at the right time and its your discipline as a professional that put you there and you answered the moment
Blah blah. How many off passes every weekend in every game. It's the way it is.
Broncos not a brilliant game but not an upset like the Rams or Colts. So obviously the Broncos did better than them.
Love the vids! Bruh defense shut people down, they say offense is trash. Well guess what??? Defense gave up 26 points and didn’t have a great game. What did the offense do? Score 27. Offense can score if they need too.
Did you see what that one guy did? That was crazy! I've never seen anything like that before. He must be a very good American football athlete.
But who can beat them!!! STOP hating
Broncos defense was not on their best game but still came through when needed. Offense drove 75 yards in 5 plays for touchdown in OT, can't ask for more than that. I guess he thinks batted balls by linebackers are just luck?
I mean.. on paper, for sure the Broncos should have won by 2 scores and had 5 sacks. But in real life, even the lower tier teams aren't just going to lay down. Add to that, they were at home and played like this was their super bowl. So take to heart that the Rams 'should've' won their game. And it looks increasingly likely like Broncos-Rams super bowl. Go Broncos!!!
Bonito got lucky?!?
He looked like he made that happen, not luck.
Give the man his flowers on that play.
The Broncos cant run the ball. A major weakness
Super lucky! LOL 10-2 feels pretty darn great to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the Broncos have another one of these in Vegas. Washington played well. The Broncos won the game.
Anyone can lose any given sunday, the commanders put up a hell of a fight, yeah some luck was involved, but thats life.. im glad we got the w lets gooo next game!! Goo broncos!
"broncos get lucky" ?? Uh no it's literally what he does all the time. Defend. We didn't pay bonito this year millions and go "hey we need you bc your lucky"
Offense needs more consistency!!! Defense had an off day but came through in the end.
I mean this unironically I’ve watched Colin on and off for 6 years and if you put a gun to my head I couldn’t tell you the rats name on the left (on Colin’s show of course). All I know is he is a Denver hater like nick wrong.
GO BRONCOS! 10-2!
this isnt a great football team. when i watch the games and only feel frustration for 3 hours i dont think its a great team. sorry. real tired of the orange colored glasses from multiple channels.
you know what? the Chiefs are like this last season and they didn't said a thing. 😅
can’t remember a time before where you have a team is 10-2 and consider a fraud and team that is 6-6 not even in playoff if season ended today is considered the superbowl favorite
Most penalized team in the league and the best record in the league
Lucky? That was a big time, playoff level play by a big time player in Nik Bonitto. People don't understand that the Commanders are night and day better with Dan Quinn calling the defense, and getting Scary Terry back really opened their offense up too. That was a proper slugfest/playoff atmosphere game that the Broncos had several chances to close, but ended up making the play of the game to seal the deal. How do you get mad at that?
Oh well…. my Broncos always do better when everyone doubts them. Just ask the No Fly Zone.
Jay is a dumb ass. GO BRONCOS!!!!1
I was at the game. Mariota had the best game of his career. Looked like a starting qb. Payton said Washington changed everything completely with their defense compared to what they’ve been doing all year. This turned out to be a trap game that we won.
Super lucky? Missed a walk in touchdown? It was a fkn failed 2 point conversion attempt. This shows the people who voice there ssa whole opinions don’t even watch the games.. smh 🔶🔷
The Denver broncos are a awesome badass tough team and they're good 🫵👍💪😎
Chiefs win 1 score games Mahomes is the best Broncos win Nix is washed n lucky 😂
This is who the Bronco are… deal with it. They just WIN EVERY WEEK!
Nobody wins a game by just showing up, regardless of record. We have a saying in the military, the enemy gets a vote. The last time I checked the Commanders get paid to play football too.
I couldn't agree with you more. Great insight about the realities of a league full of the best athletes the game has ever seen going at it every weekend, with so many factors and decisions to consider.
Our defense beat the #1 offense. Our offense beat the #1 defense. We have beaten the the last two Superbowl teams.
The best quarterbacks in the league have worse nights than Bo, they get a pass. Bo puts together perfect drives, barely any credit. They focus on the mistakes, which everyone makes.
We have won 9 straight. If we win the Superbowl, will it be enough?
You can get pissed at me if you want but If they cannot find a decent running back soon our season will be ending early in the playoffs. We need to be able to effectively run the ball for the remaining games and in the playoffs and we just can't. Not throwing shade on Harvey, he's still a rookie. But we have NO running game. Still winning yes, but it's going to catch up to us. Bo should NOT have to throw the damn ball 50 times a game!!!!!!!
Offensively we are one sided. Bo should not have to throw the ball 50 times. We have NO running game to speak of and defenses know this. What the hell is Sean doing? Dobbins is gone for the season. Harvey is a rookie and I'm not going to dog a rookie. They have to be able to run the ball better than this.
This Jmac dude on the Herd is a complete dope! He always has stupid takes that make no sense.
