FA. No qualifying offer. Middle of rotation guy. Projections of 3 years $55-60m. I like it. Combined with our other pool of healthy pitchers I think we'd be in good shape. Maybe even do Verlander as well on a 1-2 year deal, depending on what he's asking.
- Brown
- Giolito
- Cristian Javier
- Spencer Arrighetti
- Jason Alexander
Alternates: Verlander, McCullers, France, Blubaugh, Pearson, Gordon, Ullola.

Verlander????
That rotation would get us to 81 wins max.
He also just injured his elbow. Don’t want him.
Worst pitcher in baseball……..is what I always think of, I guess that commercial stuck in my head, although I don’t know what it was selling.
What happened with Valdez? Houston has luck turning players around and Houston is a great place to throw another no hitter.
Arrighetti will be getting TJ at some point in the next 6 months. Rarely does someone go down with inflammation and not need it. Javier has already had it. Giolito has injury issues as well. Jason Alexander’s advanced stats are not good at all pointing to regression. And no one on your alternates is a serious option besides maybe Blubaugh.
He missed all of 2024 with an elbow injury and finished last season out with another elbow injury.
Is he actually healthy and capable of pitching a full season?
Worst pitcher in baseball…. next year dudes an allstar
I’d like it more at the 3/45 range but that’s unlikely.
I’d rather do Adrian Houser for 2/20, Jose Quintana for 2/15, and Verlander 2/20.
27 million AAV for Houser (125 IP, 3.3 war), Jose (131 IP, 1.3 war) Verlander (152 IP, 1.2 war)
All those would be the 3rd most on the team last year. Easily movable or eatable if goes awful. Hope Arrighetti and/or Blubaugh is a number 2 or 3.
I don’t like him for any more than $15M per year.
Maybe José Urquidy on a minor league deal and see if he can return to form.
I don’t think Alexander will be good next year, and I doubt he’s still on the team by June. He was very statistically lucky last year and that was a career year for him. I also don’t think his health holds up. Of course, I would love to look like an idiot with this take!
Have you looked at his savant page? It’s hideous. HARD pass.

Genuinely would rather begin the rebuild
Marrying him back with his White Sox pitching coach and Josh Miller…Intriguing.
Unsure on the price though. Would love him at 3/45M, but so would most other contenders. I’d probably go up to 3/60M, but I think he goes for more than that.
I don’t think you can get both Giolito and Verlander and stay under the CBT. I personally am wary of Giolito being able to stay consistent. The Astros don’t need him going belly up again or getting hurt and still being in the hook for $15-20 mil a season. We just rid ourselves of the Aber contract and are still paying Walker.
My guess is the Astros are going to seek out some 1-2 year deals for any free agent pitchers. Get us through the next season or two and then re-evaluate the starting staff when some of our recent TJ folks come back.
I like Bassit or Imai better 👀
