Josh Norris dominates in return to the Buffalo Sabres lineup against the Winnipeg Jets

The Sabres get back to 500 with a dominant win over the Winnipeg Jets. We will go through what we saw in the game. Some ugliness at the end of it. nonsense there with Payton Krebs and Logan Stanley of the Jets that I got a a quick thought on a little bit later on. Alex Tuck finding the back of the net again. I got some numbers on him. He’s having a great season in a contract year and really an overall great performance all the way through by the Sabres who are able to beat a team that is very much missing their star goalender in Connor Hllabuk. and Saber fans got to see that up close and personal at Key Bank Center in front of 15,758. So, all that coming up on today’s show. So, stay tuned for that. And of course, not to bury the lead, but a lot of Josh Norris talk on today’s show because that was a performance by Norris. And I do not think anybody could have really anticipated that his return to the lineup would go that well. game’s number one star. Two goals and assists, played some good minutes, had a bunch of chances to score the hattick. Sabres were trying to get him the hattick at times in the third period. Didn’t quite get there, but still an overall fantastic performance from Josh Norris. And uh also before we get into that, a pretty brutal beat on our bet of the night. We rolled with over six and a half goals because of the UPL versus Eric Comry matchup. That’s why I was in on it. Uh, unfortunately, we only got one period out of Comry because he was so bad in the first period. Former Sabres goalie Eric Comry, who’s been taken over as the number one goalie with Connor Halabuk out due to injury. He allowed three goals on 14 shots in the first. And I thought for sure he was the ticket to hitting the over in that game. Apologies. Got so excited I hit my mic out of my hands there. Thomas Militch comes in and he performed a lot better than Comry did. Not that he was tremendous either. And UPPL had a good game. So, all right, no over in this one. That’s fine. We go back to plus N on the season on units for the season. Um, the other thing that is kind of funny about this game is the Sabres forced the Jets, who have been underperforming as of late, to hold a playersonly meeting after the game cuz those work, right? Those always work or those are always a good sign when uh hey coach out. Get out. Kicked out of the locker room. Paul Hamilton was going down to do his Sabres media yesterday and he told us that when he’s walking down to the locker room, there’s the Jets coaching staff waiting outside the locker room. You know, Scott Arneal is the head coach. Like what’s going on here? Like oh, they kicked us out. You know, players only meeting. You’re not in a good place when you have a players only meeting. can’t remember the last time the Sabres had a players only meeting, but you know, maybe they should try it more often. There was definitely a time when Aoso was the captain. They did it at least once. Um, that was, by the way, that is Winnipeg’s fifth loss in their last six games. Um, might be a conversation to be had a little bit later on about Alex Lion and the Winnipeg Jets because if the Sabres are going to go down to two goalenders at the moment, I think Lion is probably the odd man out. And if you were Winnipeg and you needed a stabilizing 1B backup type goalie to get you through Hellabuck’s injury that’s better than Eric Comry. Um this guy Alex Lion, he’s cheap and he’s a veteran. They’re not going to want Lukan in because he’s expensive and they already have eight plus million dollars committed to Helluck and um they’re not going to want Colton Ellis because he doesn’t have a lot of experience NHL. They probably want something a little more stable. So maybe there’s a trade idea there with Alex Lion to Winnipeg for any draft pick really. Just whatever a a bottom six guy, some depth, um whatever you could get. That could be a mid-season trade that makes sense for both parties. But anyways, Josh Norris, let’s get to it because he was fantastic in this game centering the top line. His line with Tae Thompson and Zack Benson, I think probably went as well as Lindy Ruff could have hoped for. That line was playing together a lot in the preseason and in training camp and looked really good. Norris was almost two points per game in the preseason playing on that line. And it does make sense other than like yesterday on the show I dove in a little bit on why I don’t like Norris on that line because it takes Tae Thompson away from center. I do think the Sabres overall lineup is better when Thompson is at center. But if Thompson is going to play on the wing, that line does make sense. Norris is your pretty well talented skater, speed in the middle, shooter. You’ve got Tage who could be your all-around offensive dynamo on the right. And then Benson could be the dirty work. He could be the playmaker when he’s got two shots, two good shots on his line. And that is Zack Benson right now, by the way. like you got to put him with some good shooters and he’s got two of them now. The touch pass that he makes to to uh Josh Norris who goes in on a breakaway forehand backhand slide at five hole to make it a 5-1 game in the third period is as beautiful a goal as you’re going to see and is the perfect example of what both of those players are good at. Norris skating through the neutral zone with speed and then finishing on a breakaway. Benson flatfooted getting the puck and knowing exactly where it needs to go to get a teammate into the best scoring opportunity possible. Um, I really liked how that line performed in this game. And obviously there’d be no reason to break that up. When they were on the ice in this game, they outshot um they outshot the Jets 8 to3 and outscored them two to one scoring chances. They doubled them up. Really good numbers on the night. Um, Thompson actually was a little bit in the background for me on that line. I thought there was a lot more puck control from Benson and Norris in this game. You saw everything on display from Josh Norris that you want when he was hyped up as the solution by Lindy Ruff and Kevin Adams before this year. The eye roll was always about injury. It was always you’re betting a lot on a guy that cannot stay healthy and then sure enough he got hurt in game number one. But I don’t know how much second-guessing there was of, well, if he does stay healthy, yeah, he’s all the things that you’re hoping he is. He is a top six centerman. He’s good on faceoffs. He has a really nice shot. He’s fast, decent size. He’s very good on the power play. He’s good on the penalty kills. He’s just overall allaround good hockey player. Like playmaking a little bit, big assist guy, not ever probably going to be his thing. that might be it for what he’s truly lacking. Everything else he’s got a really good ability in. So, sure, when they hyped him up, it was, “Yeah, that’s probably in there, but are you just going to get that guy to stay on the ice for you?” And I do think it’s probably um it’s going to leave the Sabres and their fans really hoping and wishing that this guy can stay healthy for you because you see the evidence last night of what he can be what he can be for you. He can be a legitimate 30 to 35 to maybe once in a career 40 goal scorer playing in your top six. When he’s under contract for that long, of course, that’s what you are hoping for. Every skill was on display. Every, you know, every situation was on display other than penalty kill. They did not really play him on the PK as I had been expecting. Um, and there’s really no need to do it. You’re trying to keep him healthy. Why bother having him throw his body in front of slap shots and try to block shots? He actually only ends up playing 1525. And I did ask Lindy Ruff about that this morning about Norris going forward if there’s any thought to managing him because of the injuries. And he said he even did a little of that last night. Like third period after he scored to make it 5 to one. You barely saw him after that. And he only ended up playing 1525 of ice time in this game. Almost three of which by the way was on the power play. So, in a closer game and a tighter game and a game in a couple of weeks when he’s, you know, stayed healthy for a few games in a row, could you see him playing 20 minutes a night? I could see that. I think he’s going to really test them on that front because he’s a good player. I truly believe that he is a better all-around player than Dylan Cousins. that the whole verdict on whether the Sabres win that trade or not will simply come down to whether Josh Norris is going to stay healthy or not. Cuz the player I saw yesterday is a better hockey player than what Dylan Cousins is flat out. There’s more hockey sense, there’s more hockey IQ, there’s more finishing ability, there’s a better defensive ability. Like almost everything he gives you, I think better than what Dylan Cousins gives you. And it’s not, it’s kind of funny that after just two games now this season, or let me put it this way because I did it for the season, but there was another tweet that I thought was interesting. Um, Rosie and Twitter tweeted out that since October 27th, Dylan Cousins in Ottawa has one even strength goal and Josh Norris has two. In more than a month’s time, that time period, Norris has more even strength goals than Dylan Cousins playing one game. He’s a better hockey player, flat out. and we’ll see if the Sabres are able to win that trade just simply on Norris staying on the ice. And now that the team is overall healthy and you plug him in on a top line and everybody gets into a little bit of a better spot, Mloud doesn’t have to be playing number one center really ever um when Norris is in the lineup and you also I think you really find your way to your best power play unit. the play Norris makes on the power play, that little delay that he makes when he’s on the right wall and Winnipeg is challenging him, challenging the shot. They know he’s got a good shot. So, there’s a little bit of an overcommitment there by the penalty killer. And I don’t know if that happens if that is Zack Benson on the wall. In fact, it probably doesn’t. Nobody’s afraid of Zack Benson’s shot. So, you’re able to defend that pass a little bit better. But with Norris, he catches him overextending and he’s able to just take a quick little step to the left and get that puck down below the defenseman to Josh Don who’s in front of the net. And then you create that chaos and Jason Zucker is able to bury it. That’s a goal that is scored because of the threat of Norris on the power play. And I said going into last night that one of the hopes I had was not that he would just help their top six at five on five, that he would help them become a top half of the league power play unit. And night number one, you already saw why you already saw how that could happen. You saw some of the ability that Norris has that could make that happen. He was the game’s number one star. Some of the advanced numbers on Norris in this game 1239 of five on five time. Shot attempts when he was out there were 10 to eight in favor of the Sabres. Uh shots were eight to four in favor of the Sabres. They scored two goals. They did allow one while he was out there. Scoring chances were 4 to3. High danger chances were 2 to one. So all good on the first game for Norris in uh two months basically since he picked up that shoulder injury. See how he progresses through getting a game back in. How sore he might be. We’ll see when we come back how the rest of the lineup is currently shaping up. I got a thought on Benson and I got a thought on Noah Oscelin who I thought had another solid game last night. That’s when we come back here on Lockdown Sabres. Today’s episode of the Lockdown Sabres podcast is presented by FanDuel Sportsbook. NFL Sundays move fast. Sneaky Jody Biosi back here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. the Sabres and the Jets. Buffalo 11 11 and four, three points out of a playoff spot. Don’t look at the wild card. They’re five out of that with Philadelphia their next opponent. They’re three back of Montreal who sits third place in the Atlantic Division. They are four back of Boston who sits second in the Atlantic Division. The biggest saving grace of the Sabres this season is that the division is terrible. Keep saying it and we’ll keep tracking those teams, especially in these off days we have as the Sabres go out west. um we’ll really start diving in scoreboard watching because I think it’s as important as what the Sabres are doing in the Atlantic division. So yesterday going through a couple of the goals real quick and then I got a thought on some of the young players that are in the lineup. Um I talked about the Jason Zucker goal already that was really started by Josh Norris on the wall. The Sabres to get that gut punch right to Winnipeg 15 seconds later to to score a second goal within 15 seconds is a real heartbreaker for an opponent. And a nice goal by Bo Byum who comes in, joins the rush, which is really what you want to see from him, right? Like I’m at a point with Bo Byum where when he first got here, I was thinking, “All right, still only like when the Sabres trade for him, how old is he?” He’s 22 years old. And I’m thinking, “All right, top five pick and he showed some offense, but let’s see if this guy can become an allaround top pair defenseman in the NHL.” And defensively, that has not happened. And I don’t expect it to happen. We’re at a point with him where I don’t think you’re going to be seeing these really good, smart, breakout plays out of your own end, shutting plays down on a consistent basis. He’s not necessarily a physically imposing force either. He’s not the worst defenseman in the league defensively, but I think he’s below average. The thing you want from him to make him worthwhile being in your lineup or paying the money you’re paying him is give me some offense. Give me some that that’s why you got drafted in the top five is you can skate, you can shoot, and you’re you’ve got pretty nice hands, like pretty good sense in the offensive zone. Byum has always been very active in the offensive zone. Give me some of that. And that goal is him flying up on the play and burying a chance when he has one. I do believe he has probably the best shot of any defenseman on the Buffalo Sabres. Just looking through his career shooting percentage and you just watch some of his plays like he always gets good weight on the stick. He’s got a better shot than Power for sure. Timonss got a hard shot. Samson too, but I think Byum is more accurate. And Dene, I think Diene is best. it’s probably better, but he’s actually having one of the the lesser shooting seasons on the Buffalo Sabres. So, I’d give that title to Byum at the moment. You need some offense from him. And he was able to give that to you by jumping up in the rush and um grabbing his fifth goal of the year. He is well on pace um to break his high for the Sabres, which was seven last year. He did have 11 goals in 73 games in 2324. He is also on pace to break that. I mean, you look at his pace right now and he’s on like a 15 16 goal pace. Um, playing Yeah, you know, he’s been playing more third pair lately. He’s averaging 2129 on the year. So, nice goal from Byum there. A great setup by Jack Quinn, by the way. Um, the Norris, the first Norris goal, nice passing play, good offensive zone time. And there’s a guy with a shoulder injury that did not have any hesitation about what he was supposed to do there. He has the puck below the goal line and he sees a little bit of space and he cuts out in front. That’s a power forward type of move. I don’t know how often you’ll get that from Norris, but with the shoulder injury, his willingness to go to the front of the net, which could risk taking a big hit or taking contact because that’s where you can get the goal. That’s what you need from him a lot and he gave it to you there. Alex Tuck, tons of speed on his goal. I mean, that is a rush play where there’s a break up in the neutral zone. He gets to it first because he’s one of the fastest skaters in the league, honestly. And he’s probably the fastest skater of either of the two teams that were playing last night. So, he gets that puck first. Noah Osland, super good skater as well, is able to join him. And the Sabres are coming in with such speed that they’re able to create again kind of a chaotic situation. The rebound comes in and before Militch is able to recover, Tuck’s able to bank it off him. So, a little bit of luck, but I think you’re seeing speed there create that goal from your two players in Alex Tuck and Noah Oselin, who doesn’t even get an assist on the goal, but I think he kind of should have. Um, you know, not technically, but that’s a ninth goal for Tuck. Quick number on him. Alex Tuck has 20 even strength points on the season. That ranks 20th in the NHL. That is higher than guys like Sydney Crosby and Jack Eel and Mitch Marner and Austin Matthews and Arti Paneran and so on and so forth. Like Tuck is having a great year especially at five on five. He’s not doing much power play and part of that is he’s on the second unit. So 23 points in 26 games and you’re almost exclusively getting that at even strength. uh contract year for him and we will have a more thorough episode just on his situation uh going forward. Um but we still got some time. We should still have some time until resolution comes on that front. So good goal by Tuck there and we already talked a little bit about the breakaway goal um by Norris to make it five to one. The Kyle Connor goal, Lucanin, Lucan in a solid game. That’s that’s two out of three games where I’ve liked Lucin. Um, still not trustworthy of him at all going forward, but he’s giving you a couple of good games here. Last night, he was not challenged a lot in my opinion. The goal that he let in, though, I wouldn’t blame on him. That’s a shot from the point, an unmarked Kyle Connor, who’s one of the best goal scorers in the league, is able to get that by him. I don’t have any gripes with him at all on that. So, clean game from UPL and uh no complaints. No complaints here. And it’ll be interesting what they do going into this trip because it sounded like it was Colton Ellis’s turn that they’re doing a make it take a goalie situation and that Ellis who played well in Minnesota would get this game. But Lindy talked about the back spasms that he had been dealing with earlier in the year and how they were I guess sitting on the plane in Minnesota for like three extra hours and they didn’t get in until 4:30 in the morning. So um he wanted to give Ellis a little extra rest. So, I guess that does make sense. It’s kind of weird though that twice this season it’s happened where oh, Ellis was supposed to start and then UPPL ended up starting. Just a little weird, but I buy it. I buy it because he was dealing with back spasms. And that would make sense. If there’s one injury that sitting, you might say sitting on a plane for three hours cause you to not play. Feel like if there is one thing that could happen to you from sitting on a plane that long would be back spasms. Um, if that’s what you’re dealing with. So, I do buy it. I do buy it that that’s why Ellis didn’t play. I think it’s Lucan and and Ellis going into this trip. It’s and we’ll talk more about that, but I don’t think Lion should be in the rotation at the beginning of this the beginning of this trip. Really quick, more numbers. Zack Benson on the year. Weird little season. He is H. And this was predictable. Zero goals, 11 assists in 13 games. Said it go into the offseason. His shot was the one of his two problems that he needed to fix. Skating was the other. And every game I watch Zack Benson, it is abundantly clear he absolutely improved his skating. So he improved one of the two things. And I think that’s that’s key. That’s critical. The skating is there. The shot is not. We’re not there yet. And he doesn’t trust it. And I think it’s because he’s a smart player. He knows me shooting the puck often is not our most dangerous play. even if a a a half good scoring chance from Tage is better than an amazing chance from Benson and he plays like that. So, two more assists on the night. That redirection, touch pass, breakaway pass to Josh Norris in the third period was unbelievable. It showed off every bit of the smarts that Benson possesses as a player. So, 11 assists in 13 games, no goals. I did look up just out of curiosity, he’ll score this year. He’ll get an empty netter. He’ll get something. But if he didn’t, just out of curiosity, the Sabres record for points in a season where the player did not score a goal was by Lee Foglin. Lee Fogelin in the 80s. I think he had 20 points. The NHL record is 25 for points in a season without scoring a goal. Again, I think Benson will score a goal, but wouldn’t it be crazy if he just had zero goals and like 50 assists? His 82 game pace, and part of this because of injury, he’s not on pace for this, but his 82 game pace right now is zero goals and 69 assists, which is funny. So, we’ll see what kind of year he continues to have, but I don’t think it’s a problem. I don’t think if he scored six goals this year, you’ll hear me defending him at the end of the year as like this is a player you should pay and they got to decide on him soon. Um, this is a player you should pay. I don’t care what he scored. Look at his impact on the ice and look at the assist totals he’s able look what he’s able to do for your for his teammates, his linemates. Um, and then one other thing, another great game from Noah Oselin. Guy’s got to stay on the team. And Yuri Kik’s not back skating yet anyway, so I think we have a while here, but um, Oscelin is this team’s third line center. If is gonna play wing, I think is uh needs to be the answer that continues to be the answer. And I do really like him with Tuck. I think as I mentioned that goal that they scored yesterday, like those two, the speed they have, I think they are probably Let’s look through the lineup real quick. Make sure there’s not another guy that I’m forgetting. No, I think I think I want to go with it. I think that the best the best two skaters on the Buffalo Sabres are Alex Tuck and Noah Oslin. So, putting them together and getting that elite speed um on your third line, I really like. All right, when we come back, let’s take a early look at the road trip before we get into some of the specific matchups on our future episodes. Um big test going forward for the Sabres. Sneaky Jody Biosi back here on the Lockdown Sabres podcast. 5-1 Sabres over the Winnipeg Jets. They pass Florida and Toronto in the standings. One team a week. They did two there. I want to count it on Saturdays though. uh stay above Florida and Toronto for Saturday. Road trip coming up. Big test. This is going to be a season defining road trip for the Buffalo Sabres because there is a chance that it goes horribly wrong. Two wins on the year on the road. They cannot have performances like they’ve had on the road in this sixgame stretch which will begin in Philadelphia. So they don’t go out west immediately. The first game is the biggest game. That is the team in the Philadelphia Flyers, 31 points in 25 games. They are presently in the second wildcard position um at 31 points. So that is five better than the Buffalo Sabres are at. Philly this year, I I think that’s a mid team. I think they’re better probably they’ve been in past seasons. Danny Breier a little bit on the hot seat coming into the season. Um, I think Philly is a decent team, but just because that’s your one Eastern Conference opponent on this trip, that’s a big game for Buffalo. And then six games after that and the C it’s on the road. This is their opportunity to prove they can win on the road because their caliber of opponent is not that strong. You get to play Winnipeg again and we just saw them. Without Connor Hleabuk, that’s not a great hockey team and Hellbuck shouldn’t be back by then. Then you play Calgary. Maybe you an the Sabres answer for an embarrassing home loss to the Flames by being able to beat them on the road. They’ve played a little bit better as of late, the Sabres game being a part of that, but still not playing the the best in the league. Like they’ve been playing more like a midlevel team as of late, and that’s an improvement for them. Um, so still a team I think the Sabres should beat. They are second to last in the uh Eastern Conference and in the NHL still even with the better play as of late. After that, Edmonton, who has not been themselves this year, uh they’ve lost five of their last 10. They’re not in a playoff spot. Same story when the Sabres played them last. Then you get Vancouver and Seattle. And neither of those teams, actually, Seattle is in a spot right now. Uh, but they’ve lost a couple in a row and they’re middle of the pack. Vancouver a little bit closer to the bottom. They’re talking about blowing it up actually in Vancouver. I would say of all the teams they play, there’s no single team. There’s no Colorado. There’s no um there’s no Tampa or Carolina level team. There’s no Vegas. Like there’s there’s some teams like that where I would say, “Yeah, you shouldn’t win that hockey game.” And you get six games here where I don’t think that way about a single one of their opponents. Not one. How many points you want out of a possible 12? I would say right now that I would take. What would I sign up for? I think the right number to ask is seven. Would you sign up for seven out of a possible 12? I will say I want one more than that. I’ll sign up for eight. Give me eight of a possible 12 and I’m in a and I’m in a pretty good place. Finn disagrees. All right. That is going to do it for us today here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. Josh Norris, the game’s number one star. Um, so we’ll see how he performs going into this road trip as well. We will talk to you tomorrow looking at the matchup against Philadelphia, the last Eastern Conference opponent the Sabers will play for a little bit. By the way, coincidentally, that’s their next home opponent as well, but they’re not back home until December 18th. Tomorrow is a TNT game, by the way. early PSA. Talk to you tomorrow here in the Locked On Sabres podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Be sure to check out Locked On NHL Game Night. They’re available on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Now, the number one sports podcast network.
Josh Norris made his return to the Buffalo Sabres lineup against the Winnipeg Jets and put on a show with two goals and an assist, including a sick breakaway goal. Norris’ return was a display of what the Sabres could be getting in their highest paid forward, IF he stays healthy going forward. The Zach Benson – Josh Norris – Tage Thompson line played exactly the way Lindy Ruff had been envisioning when he put them together in the preseason. Norris and Tage are the perfect partners for Benson on a line, making it less important that he has an ability to shoot the puck.
Plus, a solid game from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, another strong performance from Noah Ostlund, and Alex Tuch is putting up some great numbers, better than a lot of elite players in the NHL this season. How many points would you take on the Sabres upcoming road trip that begins in Philadelphia?

I'd rather find someone who wants UPL. Its just going to take a LOT for me to have confidence in him again.
Wow ,we got a real #9 great. Game Mr.Norris finally get to see. The return to almost get a hatty first game back ,Wow!!
Little bit of a changed tune from last episode lol
Benson and Norris looked sick playing together last night
Victories over Minnesota, Carolina, and Jets were back checking clinics by Sabres.
Norris was so good. PLEASE STAY HEALTHY!
Let's be honest honest Comrie was less than stellar" since Norris is injury prone I would not play him w Benson or Tage one is still growing the other is soft. Tage should be centering Tuch & Doan as his wingers. Norris needs a physical winger(Greenway) & skill Zucker. Quinn on 3rd line. Your paying Greenway & Krebs too much to be 4th liners. Also paying Powers too much to be 3rd pairing D man. Playing head games with UPL, he's a 1a/b starter Tuch on 3rd line w rookie center. Are you getting me! If you feel he's not a top 6 player then trade him What a joke
Really pleased with Norris's play yesterday but it is only one game. UPL played well. A positive team effort, 2 wins in a row, dont blow this road trip!
Rumors out of Seattle. Kraken looking at Power in trade. I'm not kidding. Botterill likes him, they need a puck mover….
Sabres owned this game, Hellebuyck or no Hellebuyck. They were flying EVERYWHERE.
Comrie's goals against were a PK D breakdown on the doorstep, Byrum walking right in with an uncontested laser snipe, and the 3rd goal was knocked IN by the defenseman. It was like Owen Power dressed in a jet jersey last night.
Benson literally plays like he's 6' 6", 226 lbs… then we have Owen Power who is actually 6' 6", 226 lbs and plays half his size.
Better than cousins ? He rivals tage as the best
What about Rosen???? Doesn’t he have like 7pts in 11 games? Something like that…..
That’s promising as hell
So if that's your opinion of Byrum, I can't imagine what you think about Power. Cuz there ain't nobody softer and worse in the league at the D position
