Rangers Rally Late To Beat Stars In Overtime | New York Rangers

And this is the Mercedes-Benz Rangers postgame show. And if you’re looking for a signature win to bank and build on, put a star on this one. Rangers tie it late in the third. They win it early in overtime. 3-2 the final over the terrific Dallas Stars here at the Garden. Hi everyone, John Gome from my spot between the benches. In our studio, we have Henrik Lungquist and Steve Balette. And guys, kudos to Will Culie and then Vlad Gabricov in overtime. And Henrik, when you look at the way these two goals were scored, they have one thing in common. Second chance. Yeah. I mean, you look at that third period, the intensity the Rangers play with. It was just a matter of time. And you got to be so happy and pleased with their performance, the way they showed up in that third period. We talked about grabbing the momentum. Obviously put themselves in a tough hole being down 2-1. But this shift, you know, it was all about intensity, winning the battles around the boards and in front of the net. get a little lucky B bounce. He’s trying to go across for a pass, but you know, you keep doing the right things and you will get rewarded. So, it was just great to see that they finally got um rewarded for some really great work in the third period. overtime goal. Great shot by Paneran and he kind of freezes the Smith in net a little bit with his wrist shot and and because of that he’s late for the rebound, but they just play with a lot of confidence throughout the third period in overtime. I just have to say the team needed this. The fans needed this. The post show postgame show needed this. John finally, you know, it it was just great to experience this. Yeah, it was like hearing Dave Maloney at the end of the call. It made me feel like he was giving me that Teddy KGB feeling. We’ve been hanging around, hanging around, and the team follows it up. And coming off of Mike Sullivan’s message after Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, you know, I liked what he said where he said, “Are we a team that’s offensive that checks or are we a checking team that can be offensive?” And tonight was a checking team that was able to produce offense after a lot of shot attempts, John. Most of them from the point. Yeah, guys. I mean, think about that, right? We go into the third period tied at one and the Rangers have 20 shots in the third period alone. Everyone remembers what happened on Saturday when they had seven fewer than that in the entire game. Yeah. To what do you owe? What did you see from the third period that allowed the Rangers to generate as much as they did? To me, it’s a mindset a lot of times. You know, you have to get the puck to the net and and that’s your priority. It’s not about looking for a play in that third period. They they played a pretty simple game in terms of just getting pucks into the offensive zone and then get it to the net. Yeah. And because of that, they also got a lot of second and third opportunities because they made it a lot harder for Dallas to defend. I mean, they’re a really good team in their own end. They’re very organized. They’re very structured, but when you start putting that much Robert on net, it’s just very hard to to stay in in a good position all the time. And it’s really not too far off the scope of what we’ve seen over the course of the year, which is getting pucks to the point and then getting them through to the net. It’s maybe catching me off surprise surprise a little bit, John, but the Rangers have done that a lot. They have the fourth most netfront shots coming from the point in the league. I mean, I might have seen 12 to 15 of those tonight in this game. So, it’s something that we’ve seen. It just happened to fall their way this time, too. Yeah. And it was exactly what Joe Sacko had said to me between periods two and three. He wanted to see his team create two for ones. Both of the goals, the tying goal and the winning goal created off of two for one opportunities. The goal scorer that won the game for the Rangers, Vlad Gabricov. Let’s begin our postgame reaction. Michelle Jingris in the dressing room with the goal score. What did you think of the effort in tonight’s win? Um, that was a great push from us in the third. So, we uh try to try to score even before um we gave up one and then uh we stick with that. So uh and got rewarded, score a tie goal and won in overtime. So huge win for us obviously. What’ you see in the overtime goal? Uh that was Mika and Brad. They made a great moves and then uh seen just opportunity to drop in front of Brad and create a little confusion. So he got a shot. Obviously I thought he’s going to score but uh made a rebound. So got got done with that. Dallas is a strong team offensively. I think they’ve had 21 goals in their last four games or something. How were you guys able to contain them so well tonight? Uh we tried to just stay in the five. I would say that was a team effort and Shi made a few great saves for us. So it kept us on the game. So I think that was a key. Uh and uh PK obviously they’re a dangerous team on the power play. So our special teams were good. Such a hardworking win. Johnny Bradinski told me in the intermission that you guys kind of had a mental reset over the last couple of days. What do you take away confidence-wise from a game like this? I mean um we show how we can play raise the bar. So we got to keep the standard like that and uh play like that every night. Fox, how much are you thinking? Yeah. So the fifth goal of the season for Vlad Gabricov, but guys, I want to ask you both because you played in situations where threeonrees occurred. Uh, when you see the only defenseman on the ice 10 ft out from the opposing team’s goalie, is that kind of a dicey place for him to be or is that a literal Johnny on the spot moment? I was already retired before three on three, so I hope that’s yours, John. I was trying to be nice. No, three on three is all about reads. You’re going to have players switch spots all the time. That’s what creates confusion. and Gabberov talked about it, the confusion that Mik and Brad created and that opened up the lane for him to go to the net. And the key is just after that shot, if you’re not scoring, it’s important for Ma to read off of that situation, realizing he’s going to be the defenseman. But that happens all the time three on three. But creating offense, but also switching spots and and again making the right read constantly is key three on three. Yeah, it’s all about being responsible and filling in for your teammate. We saw a lot of that in this hockey game. Yeah, we did. Uh Steve, when you watch tonight and you know that Adam Fox is not in the lineup and Vlad Gaver gets the winning goal, but it was his defense partner Braden Schneider that got a lot of the attention. Uh what do you make of the first game without Fox as far as the Gabricov Schneider combination? You know, we we didn’t see a lot of scoring chances against Igor with time and space, John. I mean, in this game, uh, going into overtime, each team scored a net front goal. Each team scored off the rush, but it was not wide openen hockey. In the first 10 to 15 minutes of the game, I mean, the theme was that Dallas can pass the puck. They can move. And it looked very dangerous to me. It looked like an all-star team. And the Rangers were able to keep that quiet. The chances, they weren’t loud. They were quiet. And I thought Igor had a very manageable night because of how tight everybody was today. And I thought it was collective. It was a collective tight. All five guys coming back. So it wasn’t uh it wasn’t a game that ever I felt that got away from the Rangers in any way. All right. So when we saw what Will Kulie was able to do, his goal that tied the game inside the final three minutes, that’s the first time the Rangers have done that in the last 130 games. That dates back to February of 2024. Let’s hear from Will Coulie, who had the tieing goal late in the third inside the dressing room. I think I’m just trying to get the puck to the net. I mean, it’s kind of hard to aim it off as bad. I don’t know. That’s quite a math angle play to uh calculate there quick. So, I was just trying to get the puck to the net and uh you know, good things happen. Considering how things went here on Saturday, how big was this for you guys to come back and play the game you did tonight? Yeah, it’s good. I mean, it’s uh it’s good to bounce back, especially on uh home ice in front of our fans, I think. Um, you know, like I said earlier, I think, you know, we’re proud of the way we played today and just stuck with it. And, uh, I felt like it was a, you know, full 60 minutes. Um, well, I guess 61 or whatever. Um, so yeah, it’s good to get back in the win call, especially at home. What’s the feeling after that goes in? Uh, happy. Happy. Just the reaction from the crowd, too. I mean, just Yeah, it’s good. Loud. Um, you know, just excited, happy, a lot of emotion. Yeah. Eagor, the save he makes about four minutes left. Um, just how big was that for you guys and how much that kind of keep the momentum going for you? Yeah, it was big. Obviously, he made a lot of big saves, uh, you know, throughout the whole game. So, he’s been great for us lately and, um, you know, he kept us in it tonight for sure. You know, Will Kulie had the tie in goal. Vlad Gabricov had the winner in overtime and he was the first star of the night. 22 and 1/2 minutes of ice time.

The Rangers were down 2-1 with only 2:13 left in the third when Will Cuylle tied it with Igor Shesterkin pulled for the extra attacker. Vladislav Gavrikov buried Artemi Panarin’s rebound in overtime for the game winner and the Rangers’ 3rd win at The Garden.
