Philadelphia 76ers Trade Rumors: Keon Ellis Is The PERFECT Trade Target For The Sixers
[Music] It is now December and trade rumors are starting to heat up around the NBA. According to multiple NBA insiders, the Sacramento Kings are open for business, willing to trade almost every player on their roster. And there’s one player in particular that catches my eye as the perfect trade target for the 76ers. Who is it? We’ll get into that here on today’s show. But before we do, guys, if you want more Sixers coverage every single day, go ahead and give me a follow on social media, have an Instagram page for the channel, 76ers now IG, and my personal Twitter, Jake Chipper. Always talking about the Sixers over there. You give me a follow, I’ll give you a follow back. Would appreciate it. So, let’s get right into the trade rumors here on today’s show. Yeah, a bunch of NBA insiders have reported on this. This is coming from Jake Fischer on the Kings. One team that is definitively open for business, Sacramento. League sources say the Kings are willing to listen to offers for players up and down their roster, particularly for Sacramento’s veterans. Just don’t get your hopes up about your favorite team acquiring the recently resigned Keegan Murray, who I would have loved, or last June’s prize first round pick, Nick Clifford. Sources say both will be off the table in upcoming trade talks. Now, the Kings this season awful. Five- 16, 13th in the West. Their season’s already really over. And it’s just a few short years ago that they had De’Aran Fox, Malik Monk, Sabonis, and they were going at it with the Warriors in the Western Conference playoffs. They were a super fun team. Now, they are far from it. And they do have some talented veterans on the roster that I’m sure a lot of teams will be interested in. Damont Sabonis, probably their best player at this point in time. For me though, not a trade target for Philadelphia at that big spot. Really doesn’t play a whole lot of defense. Is a very intriguing offensive skill set, but not someone I’m willing to pay a ton of money for and give up give up a ton of assets for in a potential trade. So, I’m good on Sabonis. Zack Lavine, another notable name they have over there. But look, Lavine at this point, yeah, he’s a good scoreer and he does still score pretty efficiently, but he’s never been a winner on any team he’s been on. He’s making a ton of money although he can be a free agent this off seasonason but again not a fit for the Sixers. Doesn’t play a whole lot of defense. And then Demard Rosen, you know, similar conversation with him, right? Not a very good defender. He’s getting up there in age. He’s making a lot of money. Doesn’t really shoot the three ball. I just don’t think at this point in his career a great fit for Philadelphia either. So, it’s really none of those three veterans on Sacramento that I am interested in. So, you got to ask yourself, right, what is the Sixers biggest issue right now? Outside of injuries, of course, on the floor, there’s a few you could go back and forth between. Obviously, at 10 and nine, the Sixers do have a lot of things to figure out on the floor, but I think the most glaring issue that really does hold this team back is their point of attack defense. It’s bad, man. It’s bad. When you watch these games, some of the stats for the Sixers aren’t quite awful. They’re kind of middle of the pack in a lot of these defensive statistics, but man, they can’t stay in front of anybody on the perimeter. They have nobody that can just go out and guard the opposing team’s best guard or best wing, and they’re giving up a ton of points in these clutch moments, leaving guys wide open. Defensively, they are not good enough to be the kind of team they want to be. So, there’s a player on Sacramento that would perfectly fit that role for the Sixers and he’s getting some interest around the league. That is Keon Ellis, who Mark Stein did report that the Kings have received calls in teams interested in trading for Keon Ellis. he would be perfect for this Sixers team with his skill set, an easy player to trade for, not making a ton of money, and I’m going to dive into all the reasons why he is the perfect fit for this Sixers team. But real quick before we get to that, want to give a shout out to today’s sponsor and that is DraftKings. We’re only a few weeks in and the NBA season is already wild. A game they have to win. Even though Embiid is not playing, Paula George is questionable. Quinton Grimes, Andre Drummond questionable as well. Still got to beat the Washington Wizards. Here’s my parlay for tonight. Give me VJ Edgecom 15 plus points. Been a little bit of a cold streak for him, but coming off the injury, I think he can get to 15. Give me Maxi eight plus assist. Give me the over in this game. Neither of these two teams play defense. over 235 and a half plus 435 odds on that parlay. Of course, odds and lines are subject to change. Appreciate DraftKings for sponsoring today’s show. All right, let’s get back to talking Keon Ellis because he is the perfect trade target for Philadelphia with a mold of player he is. We talked about a player like Herb Jones in the past being that perfect defender. Kon Ellis, while not quite as tall or as big as Herb Jones, does a lot of the same things and he also can provide you with some plus skills offensively. Now, look, obviously the numbers won’t jump off the page. A guy who’s averaging under six points a game this year, and you know, we’ll get to his limited playing time for the Kings this season, which is very, very strange, but he’s a great defender. And every year of his career, you know, year one, only 16 games, but he shot well over 40% from three. So, he’s not just a guy who can play really good defense. He’s a guy who’s shown can be reliable on the offensive end of the floor, you know, in a limited offensive role as well. And really why I want Keon Ellis, you know, elite production from three. And I I just mentioned that, but a lot of times these guys have these flaws where, you know, they can be a good defender, don’t shoot well from three. He is an elite three-point shooter, well over 40% for his career, an athletic, proven defender. He’s done it in big time moments guarding Steph Curry in the playoffs a few years ago. He was fantastic. And he can do that kind of thing night in and night out. And although he’s not this big wing like a Herb Jones, he still can defend guards and opposing wings as well. With about a 6’8 wingspan and just the the tenacity, the toughness, the athleticism, he can guard pretty much one through four at this point. And he’s a defensive playmaker. Not only can he lock guys down and stay in front of guys, which the Sixers desperately need, but he also makes plays defensively, getting in passing lanes, blocking shots, taking charges, getting deflections, things like that. And the best part of it all, he’s on a small salary, only making $2.3 million a season. Now, it is an expiring contract, so you would have to resign him if you wanted to this off season, but I think that also lowers his value as well. So, not super difficult to trade for Keon Ellis. When you take a look this season, again, these are numbers from this year at the defensive playmaking leaders. What this means, this is a metric from Bball Ball Index that takes blocks, steals, deflections, offensive fouls drawn and ranks them by who has the most overall, but also how impactful they were in the game. Keon Ellis number three. Basically, what this means, he makes plays defensively, and he’s not really playing a whole lot either for the Kings, which is so strange. So, this is a guy Sixers having nobody really that’s doing these kind of things. Like, look, Maxi is a good defender, makes some plays defensively. Quinton Grimes is good. BJ Edgecom has potential to be really good. Not quite there yet. This is a player in Keon Ellis who is different than what the Sixers have on their roster. And I mentioned his weird lack of playing time. And this might scare some people off, right? You’re like, well, the Kings are awful. Why are they not giving a guy like Keon Ellis a chance? I mean, his last five games in particular, this has kind of been all season long as well. 6 minutes, 7 minutes, 23 minutes, five minutes, and a DNP coach’s decision in his last five games. The Kings aren’t playing him. And Kings fans hate it. This isn’t a situation where he’s not good enough to play for Sacramento. Kings fans acknowledge like this guy is good. One of their better players overall, and Sacramento just doesn’t want to play him. So, they clearly don’t value him that highly. Now, I can already see the comment section right now. to people saying, “Oh, Chip, we don’t need all these guards. You know, you got Maxi McCain, BJ Grimes. We don’t need another guard.” Don’t hit me with that, man, because what Keon Ellis brings with his skill set is different than what all these other guards bring. And look, you’ve already seen plenty of three guard lineups out there for Philadelphia. And those work, right, with Maxi, McCain, Grimes, Maxi, Edgecomb, Grimes, they’ve been all out there at the same time, and it works. and Ellis can play the two, can play the three, and be again that defensive presence that this Sixers team desperately needs because up until now, again, they’ve been in really, really bad defensive team. We saw in the Atlanta game just the other day, and it’s been like that all season long. So, I mentioned making a small salary. And look, I was thinking how much it would take to trade for him. I was kind of going through King’s Twitter, seeing what they thought his value was, what Keon Elsa’s value might be around the league. I don’t think it’ll take a first round pick to get it done. Now, you might be asking, “Well, Chip, you’re, you know, you’re talking this player up. He’s a great defender, a high value to a playoff contending team. Why would the Kings not take a first round pick for him?” Well, you got to look at how they’re valuing the player. Again, they are not playing him. And he’s also on an expiring contract. So, a team trading for him, there’s no guarantee you get to keep him. So, his value won’t be all that high. Making just $2.3 million. Matches up perfectly with Eric Gordon, who can be traded starting December 15th. Throw in a couple second round picks. I don’t mind it. I think the Kings kind of view it like, “Hey, this guy’s out playing for us. He probably won’t be back on this team next season. Why not get a couple second round picks for a rebuilding team and just move on from a player who probably wants to be elsewhere? I can’t confirm that Keon Ellis wants out, but like if you’re not getting minutes for the Kings and you can make an impact on a winning basketball team, I would think you’d want to be in a different situation. So, would you make this trade? This has to be an easy accept, right? I mean, you’re giving up a player in Eric Gordon who has barely played all year and a couple of second round picks who, let’s be honest, who really cares about those second round picks for a player in Kon Ellis who can make a big impact. A for accept, D for decline. Let me know your thoughts down in the comment section. That’ll do it for today’s show. Look, as we get into the month of December, trade rumors are going to start picking up as a lot of players do become trade eligible starting December 15th. All we need to do is move on to the system we called trust the process it's already ten years and still processing…just let go, build and develop young guys around maxey.. he's the future in this team…
We need Sabonis
Despite being a great contributor to the team, The 76ers have to consider trading Grimes since they may not be able to sign him at the end of the season. If they could trade Grimes to Sacramento and get Ellis and a 2nd round pick or more back, this would be more beneficial.
No for Ellis
Sixers need a wing with more size
Another guard๐ฅ
They already have a lot of guards, Sabonis would be better
Trade for Sabonis. We already have enough guards.
76ers need a 2015 3rd quarter Klay Thompson.
Exactly what this team needs another small guard
No way we dont need anymore GUARD! We need someone who can protect the paint and reboundsโฆ.too many guards now
What is chip ๐ฌ ๐this dude ain't worth a 1st round pick and we don't need any more guards he worth one 2nd round that's it
Don't u rather need Keldon or Julius ?
We need to tank for a small or power forward this draft, gotta get a Jalen Johnson
Why don't we just have all guards for our team yeah let's trade for every teams guard makes sense smh
Stop gamble.
A
lol ur joking right?
A. We desperately need defensive perimeter players…however, we have a glut of guards…If we do this trade, then I think we should also trade Grimes or Ubre for a more athletic wing defender/rebounder. We gotta rebound the ball and we gotta get wing defense…or if Ubre can reclaim his abilities then we can keep him.
Gotta send PG and a first round pick to get off that money so we can sign grimes next season
We dont need anybody from sacremento sorry, we need some defense, and shot blocking, and rebounding
I'm down to trade for keon ellis…. if this were 2024 still
Bigs no more smalls. Like 6'8 and up. Let's Goo!
