Devin Williams Signs with the Mets | 1304
Today is December 2nd. The Yankees are considering removing the no facial hair policy ban. They’re reinstating it. No beards allowed. They’re thinking about it. They’re thinking about it. Recaps awards and hot takes. Get your Yankees news from these two fine dudes. It’s time for talking yanks. Talking yanks with old and talking with old. Hello and welcome to Talking Yanks. Thank you very much for joining us today. My name is Jimmy. His name is Jake BBD in the corner. Seatgeeek presenting a show where you can use code Yanks 2025. You get 10% off. I think 2,25% off. It’s Giving Tuesday. I don’t know. Wow. It is Giving Tuesday, which means that we’re giving all 10% of proceeds to the Rodon Foundation. Yeah. Look at my shirt. Look at my shirt. I think all Yankees gear. You got the Rodon shirt underneath. I’m I’ve decided to use mine as a laptop protector. Um and in no way is it covering part of my screen at all that’s bothering me. And it doesn’t make me want to spill on your laptop on purpose to see if it works as a protector. It doesn’t. Now, I don’t think DJ Yeah. No, this is I just have neck pain. This is That’s something people don’t do anymore. Like um like my mom, right? She was on the phone a lot with her shoulder mom this early. Your mom too? Okay. People’s mom’s on the kitchen phone. BD’s mom had the this this that pose. So they could use their hands while they were holding the thick phone. Yeah. And that that’s not a thing anymore. So people’s I wonder if people’s necks hurt a lot. Mine does. Yours always does. Always does. And your head’s small, so it makes no sense. James Davis, everyone tuning in. Good to see you. Uh it’s Giving Tuesday, which is big for you because you’re always saying it’s giving. Um like when you feel like something is your vibe a little bit. So yeah, I’m young and hip. Um, yeah. Uh, excited to yuck some ball. Excited to yuck some Yankees baseball. Uh, we got some partial Yankees news with Devin that we’ll hit off the rip. Um, and then do some like Belly Tucker because that’s kind of been one of the looming conversations in Yankee Land. It was funny going around uh to a lot of the articles on talking baseball doing like free agent prediction on ESPN and some of the different websites and a lot of them have Tucker to the Yankees which is really funny because Yankee fans kind of aren’t doing that. Uh normally if there’s like the premier top offensive free agent and they’re linked to the Yankees, Yankee fans are the loudest about it and we kind of haven’t been which I don’t know. It’s just a funny little dance to to to speed you up, to slow you down. Speed it up. I thought myself into the Yankees uh getting uh Tucker, superstar, really good athlete. I do want to go back even further and give like an actual read to this. Uh 10% of proceeds on all Yankees apparel will go to the Rodon Foundation, which supports families facing infertility. So, if you want to get yourself a shirt from our store or someone you know, you have a nephew, you have a niece, you have a cousin, you got them in the Yankee swap or something, you’re like, I don’t know, they like the Yankees. Here’s an easy solution for you. And then you also get to tell them that they donated 10% of proceeds to the Rodon Foundation. Kind of like when the Braves signed their contract and the Braves were like, “Guess what? You also you donated 10% of this to the Braves Foundation.” And the players like, “What did you make me do?” Yeah, like don’t worry, everyone does it. You know, they just signed Risel and I we looked into that and I don’t think he did, which that’s kind of it’s interesting. Yeah, there extensions that do it. I guess it’s giving Tuesday. It’s giving Tuesday. Uh you’re Tucker now. We should start Belly. Let’s start with De. You’ve been Belly. I’ve been Belly. Been Belly. Um let’s say goodbye to Deon. This is the end. Yeah, we’ll say goodbye to Devon first. What a run. Listen, and we’re going to play the highlights. Have you heard about it? And thank you, Devin. Devin Williams went to the Mets. He signed a deal that’s like5 million on the books, but it’s 15 million deferred, whatever it is. It’s three years, $50 million. And uh that was as obvious as obvious gets. Yeah, I think we tried to find clips. We said that all year. Like, can’t wait till he’s on the Mets next year. Uh, I looked at ev like almost every transcript I could find. Deon and Weave, that’s the that’s where we might have got ourselves caught up. Weave. Weave. They’re going to try and sign as a starter, but Devin to the Mets was as as a perfect pairing as you could get. Now, I haven’t had a player um 30 13 going on 30 or what’s the Zack Efron? Yeah. Matthew Perry movie. Pinky Friday. Yep. What’s that one? A freakier Friday. They don’t know. You know what is the what? I don’t know what it’s called. I don’t think it’s 13. 17 again. 17 again. So that’s the better for this analogy. I haven’t had a player Yeah. make me 17 again, right? Uh in a long time since Devin over the summer. Yeah. So I am so happy. I hope he does well elsewhere. And people will say, you know, he played better down the stretch. Sure. after he loses the division and um he was a setup guy that they had to carefully choose lanes for him to face. That is not a closer. A closer comes in and just gets whoever they’re facing out. Boone very perfectly like said they had to be very right particular with the batters Devin would face to get him into the position to succeed. So, he was great down the stretch, but it was pretty like it was not a closer good down the stretch. A closer good down the stretch is I’ll face your best, I’ll face your lefty, I’ll face your righty, I’ll face uh tie game, one-run game. I mean, he lost his spot, regained it in September, and never was a closer again. So, I am all good on not paying him and not having him back. I hope he does well. It doesn’t seem like people go to the Mets and get better. M that we haven’t seen a ton of that. Haven’t seen a ton of that. They have grown some prospects. Um but yeah, I I guess for me uh two things that I will get in front of for Devin. Um you know, part the Yankees partially left him in the role for too long. Boon when he came in the studio said he wishes wished he made moves earlier. So like that wasn’t on Devin. Like if you’re an athlete, you want the ball and you want to try and go and get it. um that the Yankees needed to move quicker in one of those transactions. And if we’re being honest about the whole thing, this is where the Yankees get in their own way sometimes is like they definitely had stuff with like Devin’s agent or people that carried throughout the season. Like the way they handled him was just completely different. Um and we see them do this sometimes, which is so weird because they talk about not doing this and every time they seem to do it, it blows up on them. whether it’s Devin or Vulpi or whatever it is. So, well, he came in and followed the Josh hater school of thought, which worked for hater because he was nasty. Um, where I’m only going to pitch the ninth inning. I’m not going to pitch multiple innings. I’m the closer. So, they were very delicate with that because they didn’t want to mess up his free agency because they want to whatever. They’re very respectful of players, but finally they were like, “All right, dude. You can’t do it anymore.” And then he still he still never did an updown, right? So like this isn’t a Swiss Army. If he’s your setup guy, he’s not Swiss Armyian. He might in the future. The Mets might change this and he might be more open to now. They got paid. He gets a contract and he got his contract now, but he I mean he was the most limited guy. So if you’re like, “Guys, stop.” He was good for us down the stretch. It was still hamstrung Boone because he couldn’t use him, give him an up down. The only guy he couldn’t do that for, he couldn’t use him versus anybody, right? It was like this very handcrafted baby gloved approach to get him to be successful instead of guys like Bednar who came in and was like give me the ball how many outs you need 45 pitches okay right which again I again who knows where the line is drawn but some of that is on the Yankees like you didn’t have to tell him anything for sure you know like you when Bednar came over they made him do it like you could have done that with Devin you could have taken him out and maybe you shouldn’t have promised him anything. Um, so hopefully they learn from that. Um, and yeah, it’s uh the first three free agent signings uh or big pitcher signings. Helley to the Orioles, uh Devin to the Mets, and Cease to Toronto. kind of funny. Three guys who underachieved in their contract year that teams are thinking they’re getting value. Yes. By signing a guy having poor performance, which just shows how much baseball has changed as a sport. That these analytically smart front offices are like, “We can get a bargain because a guy played bad.” Like, think about how far we’ve come. That is funny. That’s nuts. Um maybe Tucker did it on purpose. Maybe Tucker did it on purpose. more teams are in the bidding now. If he had an amazing year, like when Judge had an amazing year, two teams were in the bidding. And the Giants, the high bidding. Yeah, I think that’s a better play for the players if I’m being honest. Yeah, but that’s just you. No, you can bring that up, BBD, because our our friend friend uh family of the program, Nick Turo, gave me the shirt off his back. He uh again, he he posts some stuff on Yankees social media, and this is this is a good one. We like this. If you haven’t watched it, you have to watch it as well. And I say watch it twice, too, because it’s almost it’s like watching a good movie. You pick up stuff the second time that there’s plot twist. There’s notes that you miss when you’re trying to follow along. Currently on the podcast app, this is a moment to come to the YouTube and check out at least this part 10 minutes. Follow Nick on every social media. The best. Just heard the news. Devin Williams is a New York Met. said he wanted to be a New York guy. Wanted to stay in New York, but he wanted to go to the shitty part of town, the junkyards of Queens. What a fraud. Couldn’t hack at being a Yankee. My favorite. Couldn’t hack guys like me. Probably didn’t like me because I’m a little critical. Sorry, Devin. You weren’t a good closer. You suck. Good setup guy. You say he got a bargain. 15 mil a year for 50. I don’t know if that’s a bargain. I guess it is. I wouldn’t pay him 5 cents. And we changed our hair policy for you. A thousand years we changed our hair policy and you’re not even a Yankee. Put that policy back. What a joke. Ah, good luck. Now, if you watch it again, also appreciate uh the camera, man. Camera zooms. Lots of zooms. It’s probably Nick. Yeah, little Nick. Do we want to watch it again? It’s all right. At the end of the episode, at the end, we’ll wrap it with that. Um, yeah, that’s my sentiment. A lot of the notes were hit. Um, where do I I I want to double check with you on the beard policy because I know Devin became the face of it. Yeah. Because his face got criticized pretty heavily without having a beard. But it wasn’t because of deaf and that they changed the beard policy. I think it definitely was. I mean, the way I knew this was brewing with the players for years. Uh, well, Hal basically said Devin came to they they reported that Devin came to them. They almost put it on Deon. that Devin came to him and then Hal mentioned if I hear players aren’t going to sign with us because of it which I mean between the lines it seems very much like Devin shaved hated his face went to them and was like I mean I’m not I’m not signing here next year if I have to do this every time and then how was like whoa okay and then they went to Judge and Judge is the biggest clubhouse team guy it sucks because it made it’s 17 again me well if they wanted it for years. All the guys that are have been Yankees shaved, right? We’ve al we’ve seen guys Yeah. push the limits sometimes for sure. But I mean Cole shaved and he was in the it was Iel Judge shaved, Boon shaved. Uh but I guess for this to happen, Judge had to sign off. Cole had to sign off on it. Boon had to sign off. And like this had been brewing for years that in a way it’s now funny that Devon’s the scapegoat. on it. I think he was a big catalyst. Yeah. I guess I I don’t know where the boundary lands. I um It’s also more fun for me to think that way. I know. I know. So, I won’t get in the way, but the way they reported it, like they kind of outed him as a guy that like came and said, “I won’t sign here.” They obviously didn’t specifically say it, but like I don’t know. Goldie had a beard in St. Louis, shaved it, and never brought it back. Yeah. He’s a ma a man. He’s Paul Bunan’s child. Yeah. All right. Should we move on to I think so. Tucker and belly. Tuck your belly in. You know, it’s good value. I guess I’m going to give him a scent. Yeah, let’s do some tuck belly. She say you weren’t good as a closer. Good setup. You sucked. Good setup, guy. Not even I mean down the stretch. Hello. This episode is brought to you by Lids. Yeah. with in regards to Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger. I came into the off season telling myself Kyle Tucker. Yeah. Uh because that was built on the sentiment of Judge needs a Robin to his Batman. Uh we saw it with Sodto. Tucker has a higher ceiling. He’s going to get a much bigger contract. How much bigger is probably a difference. Um, when we started doing the money and the Cody Bellinger flexibility side to it, um, I also started just to come around to like, you know what, I saw Belly, it’s a lot of money for Kyle Tucker. Um, and the Yankees when we started doing the money exercise, how quickly the money kind of started to run out, I was like, well, shoot, maybe, maybe it’s just Belly and I liked like Belly played great baseball like and the Yankees missed that. Um, I don’t know. I again like I told you with the exercise of looking around and like you know I think it was an MLB executive poll um that they had Kyle Tucker going to the Yankees and I kept saying the phrase like I don’t see the Kyle Tucker team really and it’s like well is it is it just the Yankees and we’ve kind of turned blind to it blind. I don’t I Kyle Tucker was the fifth overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft. Let’s start at the beginning. Yes. He’s the third of three kids from Tampa. He’s from Tampa. Um he broke his brother’s record on uh most home runs for their high school, which was called like plant high. And on the last day of the season, he had to hit two home runs to break it. And he did. Uh so he did. Um he’s very quiet. He has an Abe Lincoln beard. He’s a lefty. He’s really good. I have I’m getting so old and so WFAN Mike and the Mad Dog in my opinions and like Nick Tuturo’s inspired me like this is a Nick Turo inspired take that I don’t like I want to be able to say stuff that I don’t know if I really back right so this is this is the seesaw ride I’m on I like belly for the next two years with with Judge with Cole with Stanton with the team I like the flexibility belly offers you for the next two years in this next short window of run because of the flexibility. I like um uh I just like his uh personality and I like his hitting style. Uh the fact that he can battle and do a couple different couple different clubs in his bag, all that stuff. When you do look at Stanton’s coming off the books in two years, Cole’s coming off the books, they’re gonna have like, you know, if you sign Tucker long term, you’re gonna be over the tax for the next two years, but then so much comes off, right? And now you’re set because you have him the rest of the way. It’s also how sometimes you get stuck. Like with Stan, they got stuck doing that. Um although I still like Stan. Tucker’s not a Tucker’s not a star. I baseball’s in a weird area. in a weird area. Yeah. Like you should get paid for your skill. But when you get to these mega contracts, yeah, like that’s be like mega contract being asked to be the face of the Yankees, it reminds me of Ellbury and he’s way better than Ellbury. I’m not saying that. It reminds me of like some of those big signings in the past where they were supposed to be like if he’s here and and judges needs a number two and Cole’s gone and Stanton’s gone like he’s not I don’t know. His personality is very quiet. His demeanor is very quiet. Like he was never the face of the Astros. No. But we don’t need him to be a face. We need him to be a great baseball. Yeah. But if you pay that money and the pressure of New York, you don’t need that. There’s judges going to be here throughout. Yeah. I’m just You don’t need Kyle Tucker to be a face. We need him to be a good baseball player. I know. But that’s where I’m just saying like it’s a ton of money. And I think the Yankees think of the branding value when they spend that much money. But I think teams think of it when they spend that much money. I think other teams do. I don’t think the Yankees need to. Think of the guys you just mentioned between the MVP row they had last year and Judge and Stanton and Cole. Um like I don’t think you do. Like Belly you’re going to pay, let’s say it’s 10 million less per year. It’s still a ton of money. Like Belly’s face value doesn’t really matter for the Yankees in the nicest way. It’s a good face. Does not. Yeah. But like I guess again in this comparison I don’t think that does matter. Yeah. I just don’t ever see it being like judging Tucker. No. Yeah. It’s a ton of money. He’d be very good. He’d be very very good if he can play left field. I almost like want to go watch videos, but they’re so much older. Yeah. They are more recent than what Belly had done in left field before this year. Yeah. But Belly was playing center and is a freak athlete. Yeah. Like Belly’s a freak. Kyle Tucker. There’s a lot of right field only who can’t move. Belly was never because you’ve seen him play in center. He’s always been versatile. Like Joey Gallow. I would have never in my life thought he couldn’t play left field. He was a gold glover and a center fielder and a supreme athlete. And they put him in left field and he went blind. Yeah, he had a lot going on at the time. I won’t fully defend Joey. Uh it was weird. I mean, even some of the some of the hops and stuff, remember some of the leaps? It was bizarre. And hey, uh we’re the next Joey Gallow update is he’s going to be invited to spring camp as a pitcher somewhere. So, rooting for Jojo. Um that’s fun. But yeah, I um I don’t know. You’re you’re right. And I there’s no defense to it. Talking about defense. I have a just a quick idea. What if they did like a at the All-Star game, they had like um instead of the futures game, it was like the past game, but not but not old-timers, but it was recently retired, recently out of the game players switched. So, like Joey Batiste and his sliders, Joey Gallow and his fast balls, all the position players that are like five years out, but now you’re pitching and all the pitchers and all the all the pitchers who think they’re hitters. The reverse game. Why don’t we just host Okay, it’s a three in game. Yeah, you don’t want that. No one cares. Going too long. It’s like a showcase. Trev would have entered as a pitcher. Maybe we go seven innings. Savannah banana ited a little bit. Yeah. Rent out a stadium. Done. All right. All right. And so you’re telling me he went to Plant High School in Tampa? Plant High School in Tampa. Same high school as Wade Bogs, Pete Alonzo. I think Kevin Knox. Well, was were he and Pete teammates? Jack Kaggleó. Um, are they the same age? Pete’s probably a couple years older, but probably teammates. Yeah. Uh, it’s nice to have in the lineup. Kyle Tucker became the first player in Astros history to hit two triples in a single inning. Wow. On September 10th, 2023 against the San Diego Padres. It’s giving fathers. Sorry. Wow. Hey. Okay. I wouldn’t have guessed this. Okay. Multicultural heritage. His father, Mike Tucker, is African-American, while his mother, Lisa Fernandez, has Hispanic roots, giving Kyle a rich cultural background that shaped his values and work ethic. Okay, I’m about that. Yeah. His older brother, Preston Tucker, played professional baseball and was drafted by the Astros in 2012. Oh, he’s a patada. He’s a natural righty who learned to hit lefty. That’s fun. You like that? I do like that. Okay. Because that means that um Well, he throws righty. Yeah. That means usually you have more power that way. The old Raphael Nadal trick. He plays tennis switch. So his backhand is actually where his more of his muscle is. Well, tennis has come around as a full on. There’s some really interesting research. Uh, the two-handed backhand has taken over. So is the two-handed swing. It’s a change I made in Blitz Ball Battle 7 working out for Team Baggage thus far. Go check it out. Warehouse. I got my Trent Gisham on. Make that noise again. Um, Henry Bplant High School. Sorry that we were shorting it. HP. Who’s Henry B plant? I’ll let you look into that. Uh, some other Kyle Tuck basically. Okay. Jake Math, welcome to the program. what this game comes down to. Uh Kyle Tucker is a year and a half younger. That matters in free agency. Um Kyle Tucker has a higher ceiling than Billy. Um over the last three seasons, uh Kyle Tucker has an 892 OPS. Uh 511 slug, 380 on base, 278. What’s both Both these guys hit lefties very well. They’re like two of the best left on left hitters. Um, both of these guys limit their strikeouts, dude. Kyle Tucker’s never struck out a hundred times in a season. Love that. Love that. Uh, Kyle Tucker, last year his walk to strikeouts 87 to 88. So Kyle Kyle Tucker, it’s in a weird bucket and it’s where you started the conversation. He’s in a weird mix of being elite but not elite. And he also hasn’t had the season. He was on pace to have the season in 2024. In 78 games, he hit 23 homers. He had a 993 OPS. So, if he had rolled that for the whole season, you’re talking about a 45 homer season, like close to one dotting. He could potentially have that in the bag. Last year, he was on pace for that. He got hurt, missed some time, came back. He wasn’t the same player. He wasn’t exactly on pace for those numbers. But the I I guess basically at this point I think Cody Bellinger you’re looking for a season like last year and OPS in the low eights. He has extreme versatility. He runs the bases fantastic. Like you said I think his play play style doesn’t get fully encompassed in war between the tough at bats and fouling off pitches and doing things that we the numbers don’t know how to fully quantify. So far, Kyle Tucker has a chance to peak with the Yankees. Uh, and like I was saying, and where it’s I initially came into this off seasonason being like, I think Tucker is the move. Like the onbase percentage is elite 380 the last three years. Yes. Like he’s not Sodto cuz he plays defense. Oh, Turo. Well, Sodto stole 40 bags. Yeah, I like that for him. That’s awesome. It’s crazy. Those catchers are so mad so fun. Um, Antoine’s out though. Antoine Richardson gone. Um, so that’s what what what’s that going to do with the Mets coming up later. Um, Kyle Tucker has a chance to be elite in a there’s a chance he could be peaking. He pulls the ball Yankee Stadium. Like, yes, it checks a lot. There’s a chance he can hit a lot of home runs at Yankee Stadium. If the man can play left field defense, which he’s won a gold glove, so did Gallow. If the man can play left field defense, well, there’s also this. It’s a better pairing. It’s just a lot more money on the books, especially long long-term Tucker easily better. If you’re ready to leave the amateurs and head over to the big league long-term, Tucker’s easily better. And this was the argument I had about signing Harper way back when. I remember with my dad or on the show and my dad liked and you guys would have it out, too. Oh, yeah. It was knuckles dragon hammers. But what about God? What about God? Uh no because Roy White played. Um he did. He did. And that’s my point. Trent didn’t play all the time last year and had a hamstring. So to say center field like Trent opted back in center field’s covered is is not entirely accurate. Correct. And there’s no other center fielder. If you don’t get belly, then Tucker’s your backup center fielder because Dominguez isn’t playing center. I can I can share that with you guys right now. It in a pinch maybe, but they don’t they don’t like it. They don’t have that in their future at all. We know that. Uh so who’s then they have then if they don’t sign, it’s Tucker and then you’re putting a ton of money in center field or it’s Judge goes back there. They don’t want to do that. So, just because Trent is here doesn’t mean they don’t need someone that can play center because Trent didn’t play every game. What if he gets hurt? Well, I think there’s Yeah, I think there’s a couple things that come and play there. A, you know, are the Yankees in the market for another backup outfielder potentially. Um, because the center field thing, you’re right, if you sign Belly, but then then are we signing Belly because he’s could be a better backup to Trent? Like, that doesn’t feel right in my core. Um, and it feels like that be that becomes a mid-season thing at that point. It’s not a reason to pass up on a talent. Tucker. Yes. I’m just saying the shortterm belly helps more. And I’m talking about like next year. Next year. But this is what I said with Harper. I was like, you’re not signing Harper for next year because people were said, “We have Gardner. He just had a great year.” Well, I was like better for next year. It’s safer for next year. Yeah. It helps the roster maneuverability a lot next year potentially. Um, and yeah, the Trent thing is a wild card, but also between his qualifying offer and like I think he can’t be traded till June 15th if something like that were to come into play. I mean, the Trent thing is a whole wild card in this whole thing. um that I don’t know if the Yankees know what they want to do with, but um and then that starts leaking into Jason Dominguez and Spencer Jones and things like that that again I don’t know where the Yankees are at. Um but I think the more I start diving into it, you know, we’re talking about judges judges prime, which we don’t know how much longer that’s going to go. the Cole conversation like Kyle Tucker is the better baseball player. When we’re talking about Belly and Tucker as part of the Yankees, we’re talking about a value equation because Kyle Tucker might get 400 million where Cody might get 175. Yes. That yes, versatility, you’re provided more, but as a pure baseball player and I I think Tucker is kind of the answer. Um especially because the other thing I’ve started spinning on Jim, we talk about the Yankees and their trade capital. Yes. Um because that’s a part of this conversation. Um that I think you know I I don’t know what rumors for young hitters that are available. Like is there a young youngish hitter or hitter even with two years left that Yankee fans are like go get that guy? I was checking out the Marlins roster and I didn’t come to a conclusion. You did? But I was checking it out because if they’re really going after a which they’re looking at, they’d probably try to find another guy thrown in there or another pitcher they’ve been interested in openly, Edward Cabrera. Yeah. So, I guess here’s my thing and this is where I’m starting to come in a different direction in my offseason plan. If there’s a young hitter out there that’s the two-year, three-year guy, and you could say Steven Quan, and maybe that solves our leadoff problem, but again, what those offensive stats turn into over a full season. Don’t get me wrong, I love Steven Quan, and if that happens, he loves him. He loves Steven. If that happens, we can figure it out. I would like that. Hey dude, throw Quan in center. Put Tucker in left and there’s your top three in the lineup. Trent Gisham accepted the qualifying offer. Trade him to Florida. Um, no. Trent, we love you. Hopefully um ah Nick Turo if you sign Kyle Tucker the next move of the off season is trade our prospects for an Edward Cabrera or for a Freddy Peralta and then doesn’t things make so much more sense it’s just a lot of moving parts once you get there you’re under budget the Yankees fake budget that we’ve made up you have the the BP piece to go with Judge and then you trade for the pitcher with two years that is cost controlled cuz dude free agent pitchers cost so much money and they’re not guaranteed to be anything really. Yeah. You know what I’m saying? I also the uh the free agent pitching market like the guys on that list also I’m like that’s not a guy you pay that much money to and you have to and you have to and it’s not the waters the Yankees have swam that much in. Maybe with the exception of Imi, but it was his own just thing. I almost said something that I almost said something that was a joke. Okay. People like jokes, but you wouldn’t like it. Oh, okay. That’s tough. That’s what everyone wants to hear about a joke. No, I was one of the recent players they did that with was like clubber. Who did that? The Yankees. Like one of the times they’ve gone they signed a picture that wasn’t like top of the market. Yeah. Like and then you’re paying 15 probably now like 18 mil. Well, I predict that with Verlander, right? Which hey, they could still go that route. And I don’t know, something about old Verlander really gets me going still. So, he finished the year really strong. Yeah. Switched cleats. So, that’s what he did. Yeah. Went to his old Reebok and he started shoving. Good for him. Baseball’s ridiculous. Um that I don’t know. I guess that’s that that’s No way. No way. No way. Way. Um I mean I pitches better in his blue jersey. I don’t know. I I start I guess where I start getting thrown off. If the Yankees do sign belly, I’m happy. I like the way Cody Bellinger plays baseball. Me, too. I’m very happy. That’s good. Um, then, okay, maybe the plan is still the same. You still trade for an Edward Cabrera or you trade for Joe Ryan or you you trade for that two-year controllable starter not making crazy money. Um, I guess for me, if Kyle Tucker comes in, I have hopes for a better offense. If Cody Bellinger comes back, I don’t. Yeah, that’s fair. That’s fair to say. Belly’s literally doing more or less the same. Like obviously there might be another tweak somewhere. By the way, like Belly had a really good year. I don’t He had a slow April, so maybe you could spin that as like Belly could have a better overall season, but I don’t I don’t know what more Belly would truly have in the tank over 162. And again, I don’t want to say that in a rude way. He was like an over five war player who moved all over the place. Yeah. I mean, if he if he repeats that and the defense was really great, right? So, if he repeats all that, that’s awesome. Yes. But the Yankees the Yankees pitching ran out, but we kind of have solutions and hopes there between Cole coming back if Clam Clam Schlitler Clam Schlitler. He’s got a change up now. Hey, I’ll say something. I haven’t said in a while. Print the shirt. Clam. I want a Clam Schlitler shirt. Babes, reach out to our people. Print one. [Laughter] I’ll send it to Clam Schlitler. I think I DM’d him once on Instagram. Did you hear the news? Clam Schlitler. He’s working on a change up. Yeah. Uh, splitter or change? Not sure which one he’s going to go with. What a good Yankee quote is upcoming by this. Continue. No, that’s exciting news. There’s more. I thought you had the quote in front of you. Uh, no. Matt Blake said, “Yeah, working on a splitter or change up is probably a change up.” Oh, yeah. Yeah. It’s like, oh, okay. Well, he said he can’t he said he cannot get the wrist manipulation for the splitter down. And and and they said we need to mitigate the foul ball war uh and the foul ball battle. Like we need swing and miss that not just foul balls, which is very true. Like he got when he got them. Yeah. and and more people would just realize that mitigate the foul ball war. I think he might have said foul ball battle, but it was cool. It’s cool either way. I kind of I don’t know if he said mitigate either. Okay. Sorry. But I’m par I’ll find the full [ __ ] quote. All right. I really like I really like everything you’re saying that that’s why I was ready to run through a wall for map like mitigate the foul ball or I’ll find it battle. Um, what else do we need to cover with Tucker and Bellinger? Um, that’s it. I don’t know. I I What if they go 0 for two? Okay. He said, um, they need a pitch to end foul ball wars. So, I think foulball battle’s cooler. And I kind of helped him out. I’m all right with both. Yeah. But I I mean, if you really wanted, I helped him out. more of the history there. Um, do we do a what if they miss both conversation? Uh, like they’re free agents. No, because like because they can’t Well, I actually I do think that it’s a race to belly. Like you said, the state of baseball right now is go find the lesser right value. The guy coming off a softer season so you can get less investment. Less investment. So I feel like and I was reading some stuff that led me to thinking this is like it’s almost a a race. You think baseball’s flipped cuz you used to be a big set the market guy. You think it’s flipped? Okay. Yeah. I think I think when when there’s a guy like Tucker who’s not a judge, not a Harper, not a like this is going to be the face of your city, your marketing department is like your merchandise, everything is tied to this guy and he’s cost a bunch of money. I think there’s a race to the secondary market because you can be the highest bidder on Belly and that means the next team has to pay more for Tucker. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like so I think the Yankees would rather I think that’s why you have seen some contracts right now that people are like he got that right they gave him that like that’s like the Dylan cease I think was exactly this. Yeah. I guess I guess the thing with Belly and Tucker the other teams in play here you know like the Mets the Blue Jays and Dodgers are some of the most heavily rumored teams around these three. Those teams already have faces. Like you’re absolutely right. I mean, teams want guys that they can put over the stadium and sell jerseys. And Tucker doesn’t necessarily have that appeal as of now. Well, I’m talking about like the lower market teams, right, that want to go get a guy. Like the Brewers went and got Yelli that year and he was became the face of them. Like, right, but they got a trade for that guy. Yeah, but then they signed him. I’m I’m just saying that there’s more teams in on Belly and there’s teams that are in on Belly that are not going to be in on Tucker. Not a ton, man. You don’t think so? Like if you’re willing to pay 26 27 million for Belly, like I think a lot of those teams are the teams that are in for 36 37 for Tucker. You’re just hip. [Laughter] That one I didn’t want and I don’t want that anyway. Also, is the QZIP thing a thing now? Are you What’s that thing? Cuz I’m I just wore one today because I’m an unfashionable white person. Is that the joke? Uh, I believe the thing is that young people are trying to be more professional and are in on the Q. It’s it’s complimentary to double dagger. All right. What it’s it’s a Tik Tok trend I’ve been seeing that people are wearing quarter zips and like making a big deal backwards and making a big deal of it. The world is sprinting backwards. A lot of the boys and I are rocking QZips now. We’re grown up. What? I think that’s like Zo Jack. Jack Jack just changed stuff. Have you seen him lately? He looks good. I’ve seen him mix in a couple like QZips and stuff. I just sent you a screenshot. Now this is a derailment. Perfect. After this. Before I start this ad, let’s play a little game of guess that noise. Bet five bucks and get $200 in bonus bets if your bet wins. In partnership with DraftKings, the crown is Jake. Leave your comment. Guess that noise. But I ran into a conspiracy. You told me to look into Henry B. Plant. Oh crap. Oh crap. Well, first let me tell you he was a 19th century American railroad magnet, steamship operator and hotel developer. He was instrumental in developing the west coast of Florida. He founded the plant system of railroads and steamship lines which helped stimulate economic growth and tourism by linking central and west Florida to the rest of the country. He looks like just a diff a younger cleaner version of Albert Einstein. Okay. Was that the look in the day? Was that like the sec? Huh. Interesting. I think there’s something happening. What do you think when you say you think there’s something happening? No, that’s as far as I go. Because here’s here’s what I think we just found out. I think Albert Einstein pulled No. Yes, dude. He’s too brilliant, famous that I think when Albert Einstein I’ll find out about that was bringing up his agame. I think he would tighten it up and he looked like HB Plant and I think HB Plant looks fantastic there that I think this was Albert Einstein’s secret. I think Albert Einstein was a hunk. I’m finding out, but he just went with the bed head routine. Yes, cuz a messy desk is too smart to do my house. Plant was an attractive dude. Einstein himself had been unfaithful to his first wife. Eventually left her to marry his mistress. Okay, you might be right. You might be right. It was also his cousin. Is that true? That’s what genius Albert Einstein’s theory of infidelity at Geo.com TV.com says. Wait, Albert was tagging? Yeah. And back then that wasn’t that’s just what they did. I’ll tell you what, I could watch. Okay. His second marriage did not signify a commitment to monogamy. Einstein continued to have affairs with various women. His letters reveal relationships with several women, including a woman referred to as Mrs. L, later identified as Moderate Lebach, his secretary, Betty Newman, uh, and a Berlin socialite named Ethl Mitchinowski. Ethel. Ethel. Some respect on her name. Some reports even suggest a relationship with Margarita Kanakova, who was rumored to be a Russian spy. I heard that. So, you’re right. This guy was like, “What if I look like Einstein, but just better?” Right. And I’m saying that Einstein had the reverse going on sometimes. Did like when Einstein wanted to turn it on, he would show up to dinner looking like HB Plant and they’d be like, “instein kind of foxy.” Did Albert Einstein also just Henry B. plant. Henry B plant I also want to put it out there hang out together. Um you know there’s a lot of scenes in movie or TV that tons movies are full of scenes. Fair. Fair. There was more coming. There was more coming. Um I was going to say that you can watch on repeat and they always make you laugh. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. When Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street starts talking about marrying his cousin and he’s got the big fake white teeth and that stupid look on his face, I could watch that on repeat and crack up till the end of time. Henry B. Plant way older than Albert Einstein. Like he was dying when Einstein was born. So he set the tone. He died in 1899 and Albert Einstein was born in 1879. Right. So when Albert Einstein was 10, this dude was 79 years old. So to answer my previous question, I don’t think they hung out. So did Plant live a long life? So is Plant unfaithful? Um he’s from Brford, Connecticut. He He’s 79 years old. I think that’s pretty long. I’ve for that time. That’s crazy. Uh well, you got to remember that there were so many early deaths that the average age of life gets dragged down. Okay. Once you got past like 10 years old or whatever the threshold is, the average age is actually much higher than I still feel there’s too many that you’re like, “Yeah, he died at 47, you know. Yeah, could be us. Uh he has one child named Morton [Music] Einstein born in Germany. I didn’t have that. I’ll be honest. Like, it makes sense. But you didn’t know that. I knew he started in Europe. I didn’t know where. Tended Zurich, Switzerland. Uh, hey, I know if you’re a Yanks fan and you’re still here, you’re welcome. Um, I know you just kind of shued this away. Brian Cashman has his whiteboard with his markers and his different plans. There’s a no belly no Tucker plan. Wow. Because Jim, I know you don’t like this, but Judge Trent Dominguez is option. An option. Yeah. You know, I It’s an option. But then you need to go change the infield. Like I said, you need to go change the field. Marlins have any short stops? They still don’t have a lot of hitting. They have one out Kyle Sters, but he’s got like five years of confing. Alcantara’s got to be the only person on a contract on the Marlins, right? Correct. Like if they trade him, they’d have no one. Which means the Marlins are going to have signs. They’re going to get a Luis Severino signing. Trade for Castanos is what Shelfie and the Phillies want. People think him and them or the Marlins and Pirates are the two teams potentially facing something like that and need to do something this winter. Who’s going to be the Luis Severino of the Marlins? Maybe Luis Severino. There’s rumors he’s going to get traded. Same guy is everybody’s exception. I think you have to spend in free agency. Or is it just payroll? I think it’s just payroll. I believe they could trade for money if they want to. I mean, if they trade Alcantara, they need to sign someone. Sy’s the only guaranteed contract on the Marlins. Pathetic. You like Sandy, huh? No, I I I don’t know. I haven’t I haven’t really looked into him, but uh was it Bowen was like the Yankees are sniffing around there? Yeah. And it they’re at least talking. That’s what they do. They go find guys with one year left now. Yeah. Club option for the second year if it goes well. I guess for me and and we’ve talked about the so the two things that are going on in my head right now. The Yankees have a lot invested in their pitching um between Cole Rodon, Max Freed, like those are those are big boy contracts. Um, and I I guess you could say that with the hitting too, but you have more hitters and pitchers analytics um, starting pitchers. Um, that I don’t know, I can get myself excited about a lot of the hitters and almost like the contracts make more sense to me. Like you’re like, “Okay, Kyle Tucker, we’re taking a big swing for a guy that has a chance to pop belly really good.” um for the Yankees to invest in another expensive rotation piece or you go for the cheaper Justin Verlander piece that doesn’t necessarily excite me that I don’t know the Tucker Ellie Bashette route and then trading for a like trading for Joe Ryan or Edward Cabrera would be really cool. You know what I’m saying? Yeah. Cashman had the one quote that about the shortstop where he said that uh Cababiierro is the starting shortstop right now by default. Yeah, not great. Not what if something comes around will jump on it. What did he say? I’ll find the exact quote, but he the sentiment was like we’ll evaluate the the cost of acquisition and uh almost have it. Yeah, something right now. Cabier is a guy by default and if we run into something even better, great. and we’ll assess what that cost of acquisition is and go from there. If we run into something even better, great. Run into Bo Bashette. Zach Netto. Now we’re here. Here we are. Bashett’s gonna I know Joe’s McFly just got here. Um it’s really changed the vi. Well, and to wrap up the Einstein and um plant situation and bring it back to baseball. Einstein no connection to baseball. Hated athletics and all that. Uh people say he might have tutored Moberg, but probably not. Moberg’s like just a loser. So um but H uh B Plant, he built uh the first baseball stadium in Tampa, which hosted games in 1899, and then became the spring training site for the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox. Okay. Uh but he didn’t really like baseball. It was just a business venture. That’s fine. It’s fine. That’s fine. Einstein didn’t like sports. No, he’s like a smart guy. He likes sailing and cycling. All right, I’m out. He said, “You will learn about relatively faster than I will learn about baseball.” That’s a copout. Einstein didn’t like to learn. Baseball’s harder than relatively. That’s a good way. That’s a yogi type. I went to the Yogi Bear Museum. Yeah. Looked like you had a nice time. Yeah. I mean, the museum’s nice, but it was a rainy day with six kids. It’s like, where the [ __ ] do we go? Any pl is there any place inside around? So, I went there. It’s a cool museum. I mean, there’s not for kids. We brought six kids. It’s not for kids. No. Okay. It’s small, but it’s cool. I saw them throwing a ball at there was one like throw a ball. So that’s what they did the whole time. Okay. Yeah, it’s great. Saw the field where Nikki Cass played. Yeah. Are we are we doing uh voicemails next episode? Call in and leave your voicemail. It’s got to be 25 seconds long, full of passion and spunk and uh lead to spirited debate. I’ll leave it open 42 seconds for Mo and Jackie. You just doubled BBD’s time. Oh. Go Yanks. Tell them Grahams. Go Yankees. Go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees.

What would your plan be for the offseason if the Yankees don't sign Tucker or Bellinger?
How many players have said they won’t sign for Yankees cause of the beards? I’ve heard it multiple times and we are going to put it solely on Devin?
I swear to god if they bring back the facial hair policy I’ll be so embarrassed
Tucker over Bellinger.
Resets the young core for Judge’s inevitable decline. There aren’t any good OF free agents the next two years I don’t think.
If you sign Tucker you can truly open up the war chest of prospects & find a legit righty infielder
Not a yanks fan, cubs man, don’t typically listen to this pod (Talkin Baseball/Baseball Today guy), I clicked simply for the thumbnail pic and the trade 😂
woah woah woah, DEFERRED?!?! Mets are ruining baseball!
I can’t support the facial hair rule going back.
Anybody else feel like the infield is in worse shape than the outfield? caballero and mcmahon are fine but I don’t feel great about them over 162+ playoffs.
Why is Imai not brought up
Imai and belli is complete minus bullpen
Seager and Tatis is all we need
The 96-98team was hoping me grown for the most but art
Yankees are ridiculous the players want them to remove there facial hair policy which they did and if they bring that back that's ridiculous they have to listen to The players they want it gone
Weren't there like 14 or 15 seasons since the last Yankees title where the grooming standards/facial hair ban were still in place? Has nothing to do with anything. The only point of conversation around the Yankees should be they are the prestige franchise of the single largest sports market in the entire world and their trust fund baby brained owner wants to treat them like a small market team. Nobody is winning or losing baseball games because of beards.
Did Devin Williams deactivate his instagram or am I just blocked? Lmao
Gimme seager gimme belli gimme tucker gimme a full lefty lineup plus judge add some rotation and pitching and im happy.
Judge, as captain and best hitter on earth, should’ve told Hal that if he has to and is fine with shaving, bum ass devin williams should be too. There have been far better yankees that they didnt end the policy for
“Switched cleats, went back to his old reeboks and started shoving” is maybe the most baseball sentence ever
Oysters, CLAMS, and cockles. Print the shirts!
After decades of the Yankees trying to buy championships it’s funny how they are being bullied around constantly now 😂😂😂
Einstein talk really revealed your lack of knowledge outside sports lol
What if they say screw it lets go get belly and tucker! Trade Dominguez and or jones! Just spit ballin
This Turturro guy is an absolute loser. Not the least bit funny…
Watch.. he’s gonna end up having the best year of his career…
43:40 yes, Einstein married his cousin. His first wife was a good physicist he had met in school, but when you're Albert Einstein, even a good physicist seems dumb in comparison. His cousin, on the other hand, was not a physicist at all, and so it was easier for him to explain his ideas to her as a lay person, not a lesser colleague.
He did always feel badly about it and later in life expressed deep regret for how he treated his first wife and his daughter. As brilliant as he was at physics, he was always pretty humble about his shortcomings, both personal and professional. He was a good mathematician, but not good enough to develop General Relativity, which is a beast mathematically. He needed his friend Bose to teach him math for years to develop the equations.
Very simple solution, sign Tucker for LF, Cody for 1B, Rice catches, sign Imai, trade for a SS. Trade Wells, Jones, Jasson, one of Gil/Warren away to fill SS/bullpen/ maybe another starter. I need to stop sniffing glue cuz realistically we not doing shit
With no salary cap, how does the money ever run out Jake?
Nicks whole thing is the s ame as a guy who's girl left him. Than he posts how he didnt want her anyway. Holy copium
So would facial hair be considered a roster addition?
Does Jake know he’s allowed to mispronounce something without turning it into a Jim from the office look at the camera moment?
Genuinely curious
You’re not signing Bellinger or Tucker for a short term deal so the answer is to obviously go with the one that helps the team more long term…
Which is Tucker
We lost without the beard 🧔🏽
I would’ve been pissed if he came back 😂😂😂
Trade dominguez and pitcher for corey seagar
Is it too crazy to think Belli and Tucker. Move Belli to First, return Rice as Catcher, and put Wells on the trade block?
There is nothing Belli does better than Tucker, Belli’s versatility doesn’t mean much to me with this current teams construction. We have a CF and a 1B that will both play everyday. Tucker can play a decent LF and will more than make up the extra $. We can’t over complicate this. Get the better player
Tucker is a no brainer and you need to get a lot better to compete in the AL East and running it back would be a mistake
Do it beards look stupid on Yankees players
For the record all of the players in the direct Yankees to Mets pipeline w David Stearns at the helm have gotten better in significant fashion:
Soto: goes to the Mets and all of a sudden leads the NL in steals. IMPROVED
Holmes: Makes 30 starts and pitches 165 innings w a top 10 era in the NL at 3.53. His most valuable season as a pitcher in the big leagues. IMPROVED
Severino: -1.5 war and a 6.65 era worst pitcher in baseball his last season in the Bronx and then he’s back to league average with a sub 4 era with the Mets. IMPROVED
Luis Torrens: Yankees traded him to the Mets for cash now he’s the best catcher in baseball at throwing out runners. Quality right handed backup catcher who the Yankees could use.
–
Odds are Devin Williams will be next on this list
Get rid of the fakin beards bring the tradition back when u try to please all u please none so fak em
17:40 🔥We Need Belli Bomb Bronx
People talk about the hair policy as if it's an ancient staple that was always there. The rule started in 1976 cause George Steinbrenner wanted to force the counter culture developments out.
Tucker way better than Bellinger tf
It's said that Einstein bagged Marilyn Monroe
The last thing the Yankee organization should be worried about is facial hair.
I do not get the Kyle Tucker hype and the hair policy should stay
Only weirdos care about a nonsensical facial hair policy.
All NY sports teams are a joke 😂
They shouldn’t have removed the policy in the first place watching games with everybody having beards did not feel right didn’t feel like the Yankees
