Highly recommend checking out the latest Splash Hit Territory podcast episode with F.P. Santangelo and Susan Slusser. They share some very unique insights regarding the recent news on the Tatsuya Imai pursuit
She says money is better spent on hitters and everyday players. Posey says Pitching and defense. Obviously pitching is important and another top of the line starter would be nice. But we lost a lot of games this year because we couldn’t score, not because of pitching and defense.
Tbh I’m just coping. Fuck the Johnsons.
Too many long term contracts on the team already make them wary to do more, meanwhile in LA and TOR they are getting thrown around at will and both teams are signaling that they are going to do it even more. If you don’t want to be mediocre you have to either develop talent or spend, enough of this carrying water for a team wanting to stay stuck in the middle.
Spend money on hitters/everyday players…
Okay? But as Devers showed, there’s an inherent problem with players when they put on a Giants jersey, they suddenly become inept hitters or much less productive.
There are so many games they could’ve won if they had a reliable five starters to go to. Yes, hitting was a problem, but hitting has ALWAYS been a problem with them. So why not sign the Japanese player who talks like he’s a Giant already? The one who WANTS to beat the Dodgers and would be a nice compliment to Webb when they let Ray walk after this next season?
It is crazy they are recording this from a pub I have been to many times
I don’t really get the “spend money on the offense” and this seems like coping for the realization they aren’t going to spend on landing Imai. Last season they committed a massive amount of money on their offense in contracts for Chapman and Adames and then trading for Devers. Their biggest offseason signing the year before was a position player (JHL). Their best prospect since the WS core came up is also an offensive player (Bryce). The best hitter they have developed in the last 10 years is a position player (Ramos). All of their their top 6 prospects on MLB pipeline are position players.
I get that position player contracts are often more predictable (since a significant number of pitchers just fall off the face of the earth around 29). But this team is not lacking on investment on the offensive side of the ball and it desperately needs pitching going into next season. The team has 3 starting pitchers! In a league where you need like 7 or more to get through the season. They need to add AT LEAST 2 legitimate starters, plus have to hope that another 2 of their younger guys like Whisenhunt or Tidwell can contribute significant time.
I hate passing on players that actually want to play for the Giants. Gausman wanted to be a Giant long term. Obviously, we don’t know about Imai, but he seems like a unique personality that would fit in well.
Love FP. And am happy to hear he has a show. But why are they recording from the Upside Down?
I cannot for the life of me figure out what the Giants’ strategy is here. You have 2.5 starting pitchers and a whole bullpen that needs re-evaluating, but they’re supposedly gonna pursue hitters?
Not to turn into a KNBR caller, but if this ends up in a “trade Eldridge for 2 years of Joe Ryan or a year of Freddy Peralta” im gonna be pretty fucking cross.
