Herbert On Surgery & Practice Expectations Vs Eagles | LA Chargers

Did the surgery impact your grip of the football at all? Change it at all? Did it improve it? I know you’re talking about Sunday like the hardest things to grip the football that change with surgery or anything like that. Uh well, I haven’t really gripped the football. I wasn’t out of practice today. Um I’d say that’s something that I’ll probably address in the next couple of days. How did it go? How was the surgery? Yeah, I heard it went well. Um, you know, it’s I I think it’s uh been only a couple days, so it’s, you know, not much of an update. And, um, as long as they said it went well and, you know, it stabilized and everything that, uh, you know, the doctors were happy with how he performed. So, you know, I guess that’s always a good thing. It’s just the next couple days seeing how the swelling handles and and what goes on from there. Did you get any information on what exactly the surgery was? Like a plate, screws, or something hardware put in there? Yeah. Uh, yeah, I think it was a plate and a and a few screws. So, um I I don’t know the exact medical terminology or or what exactly went on, but uh you know, he said it went well and got it stabilized and and he was happy with how it went. Do you still feel like you’re preparing that? Am I preparing as if I’ll play? Yeah. Are you still preparing that play? Yeah, that’s uh you know, that’s the plan is to to prepare as if I’m going to play and uh you know, see how the next couple days goes and do everything I can to be out there for the team and for the guys out there. What is the recovery process looked like for you so far? Uh just getting the swelling down. You know, that’s been the most important thing the the past couple of days of um you know, just getting back acclimated, getting it moving and and doing everything I can to be out there. Do you feel like you’d be able to start if you didn’t practice at all this week? Have you ever been in that situation before? I have. Uh you know, a few times where I haven’t taken reps throughout throughout the week. Um you know, it’s not ideal and it’s it’s definitely difficult in this league. Um but uh if that’s the case and if coach feels like I I’ll give the best shot for the team, you know, then I trust his decision. Have you talked with the training staff doctors about what the game day contraction would look like? Some sort of plastic covering or talked through that plan yet? We haven’t talked about it yet. I would I would imagine it being similar to what happened on Sunday. I think it’d be a, you know, a hard layer cast underneath a glove and just enough padding to to cover it. Um, I would imagine at that we haven’t really talked about it yet, though. When it comes to playing with a cast, how does that change how for you how how you’re looking at the game? Do you do anything step differently like specifically that you can point to? I try not to I try to play the game the same way and try not to let that affect you and um you know I think I was just aware of handing the ball off and you know using that left hand in the game. Um and that’s always the tough part but uh as long as it’s stabilized and fixed and um you know the doctors feel comfortable with it then uh you know I think you can just move on to just playing and just try not to focus on too on it too much. was saying the other day that uh being a quarterback and handing off, it’s kind of like being a card dealer where you’re moving things around. Do you see it that way, too? I’m not sure what he was driving that, you know, when you’re going to hand off to the right to your right, basically using your left hand. Correct. Yeah. I think I think he’s Yeah. Um I think he’s got a good analogy there. I think it’s important and um you know I think when he he’s referring to being able to be quick with the ball and you know the the quarterback’s job is just to get the ball to the running back in a in a position where he can make something happen and you know that’s getting back to the line of scrimmage and getting away from it to a position deep enough where the the running back can cut back. He can you know he can follow the offensive line and um you know I think if you have any mishaps or or you’re slowing the the running back down with ball handling I think you’re doing a damage to the offense. So, you know, I think that’s just where he’s talking about just being quick and and fluid with the motion. Um, is your hope that at some point this week you’ll be able to see if you can take snaps under center or if you play, is it probably going to be similar to Sunday in terms of all pistol shotgun? Yeah, I think ideally uh later in the week we’ we’d probably test it. Um, we I just really haven’t gotten that far yet. And uh, you know, I think it’s just seeing how it feels and if it’s comfortable enough and if you’re able to take snaps, great. Um, you know, I think Coach Roman did a great job adjusting the game plan where we went to the pistol, we went to gun, and we had this, you know, game plan to be under center. Um, but he’s fluid with it, and I think he understands the situation. Coach Harbaugh, they they worked really well together. So, you know, whatever ends up happening, you know, I think they’re going to be able to make it work. Justin, with with Jim and Greg’s familiarity with McFangio, how much has that helped in your guys game plan kind of approaching the Eagles defense? Yeah. Uh, you know, he’s had a ton of success in this league and and uh you know, back at his time with the Broncos um you know, we saw them twice a year and we had a ton of respect for him then. Um, and you know, we know how good their defense is and we’ve watched the film and it doesn’t take long to turn it on and see, you know, the the plays they make, the guys that they have on that side of the ball that um, you know, are game wreckers and and so you have to be aware of those guys and, you know, at the same time they’re really well coached and and it makes for a dangerous com uh, combination for a defense. What’s about their front seven? Yeah, they’re just able to get after the passer. you know, um you know, there’s there’s no weaknesses on their defense and um you know, their front seven, you know, all all seven positions, they’re able to get after the passer and um you know, chips and and whatever how you have to to get after those guys. Um you know, you got to be on your stuff and have a great protection plan for sure. Jim mentioned you were uh out at walkthrough. Were you just watching or were you actually walking through some stuff? With the walkthrough, I was participating. Okay. And then uh did you end up making it out to practice to watch it all or did you stay in that room? Uh yeah, I got a lift in and then did some more treatment. Um and we’ll watch practice. I I didn’t make it out to practice today, but uh we’ll watch practice for sure afterward. And what’s the situation with her right now as far as just wrapped up it up and just protected right now from, you know, if I were to fall over or hit it on anything? Justin, you played through a lot of you played through a lot of injuries in your career. You know, been pretty kind of tough from a pain standpoint. So, is it just a matter of kind of functionality? Can you play with a you know, surgically repaired hand at this point? You know, it’s not so much about protecting it, more about functionality. Is that safe to assume? Yeah, I think that’s kind of what uh you know the doctors had said is as long as they felt like it’s repaired and and fixed, you know, I think it comes down to um you know getting that swelling down and being able to play with it and and understand that you know you got to catch a snap, you got to be able to hold on to the ball and there are a lot of things that come with it and you know I think pain factors in to that a little bit too. So, um it’s definitely just see how it goes this week and and uh obviously I’m doing everything I can to be out there and um you know I’d fight through anything for those guys, but uh at the end of the day you got to be realistic and and listen to the doctors because they know best and um we’ll see how it goes. Back to the game on Sunday, you came in on that third down. Were you just waiting for the right moment to come in or do you see, hey, it’s third down, like I’m I’m just going in. Um, I kind of just came back and um, I didn’t want to disrupt the offense and, you know, I thought Trey was doing a good job of moving the ball and um, you know, then I did see it go to third down and then I just wanted to go out there and compete on third down. Um, so I felt bad like taking him out, but uh, you know, I think that’s just the way that that the game handled and um, you know, how it how it went about. when when you’re fighting as best you can, as hard as you can to play on Monday and kind of get back at the same time, how do you then factor into helping Trey? You know, if he ends up having to play, kind of what’s that balance like throughout the week? Yeah, I think that’s when you know meetings are most important and and uh watching film and just talking about you know things we’ve done and things that you know we’re planning to do in this game and you know Trey’s done such a great job of supporting me throughout um you know these 13 14 weeks and you know it’s it’s up to me and um you know that’s the least I can do for him if if that’s the situation that unfolds. Um so to have a guy like that in our quarterback room it means a ton to me and you know I’ll be there for him if it if it doesn’t work out for me. How how big is the extra day in terms of being able to like potentially play in this game do you think? Yeah, I think uh you know every extra day is is huge. Um you know it’s it’s obviously um you know situation where it’s you’ll see how it goes throughout the week and um you know you’d love as much time as possible and you know I think having an extra day doesn’t hurt. Um so it’s uh just see how it goes and and uh adjust from there I guess. And then uh just going back to the interception in the red zone um looked like you checked the play or killed the play pre- snap. What did you see pre- snap? Did they play something different than you were expecting? What’ you sort of see both pre and post snap on that play? Yeah. Uh I thought it was cover zero and so ended up killing to a play where we had like a man beater and uh they ended up passing off which we haven’t really seen on film and so they they got me there. Did they end up in man or were they playing? Uh it looked like man to me at the time. Um but uh you know I guess that’s something we’d have to ask them.

  1. I hope if he can't do the job Monday he doesn't try to play the hero and have poor performance. Lance is a healthy QB and more mobile. It is not like they still have Stick at QB 2, Lance is a good QB.

  2. Im not fully sold on Lance yet. I fully agree he has progressed but in my eyes we can either let herbert play with a broken hand or let our version of geno Smith play against the eagles. If I was harbaugh, I would let herbert play.

  3. We really have to have ads on 9 min update video? I mean if the $$ go to our social team I’m ok with it but if it goes to spanos then shut them off
