Let's say we are in a paperclip scenario, where Indy cannot take on any more talent, especially a unicorn center, and stay within that apron they are firm about. So we need to build a team of paperclips, as AA would have it, to compete next season.

Do we have enough around Haliburton to construct a roster as is? If so, assuming all members of the team are healthy—who starts, who is secondary, and who plays deep off the bench?

For arguments sake, let's say we dropped one player and brought one in. Who are they? And we got the top pick. Who did we draft?

  1. The most interesting part of this offseason is mathurin. For now, I’ll assume we keep him. The best starting 5 to me is: Hali, Nembhard, Nesmith, Siakam, Huff. Mathurin is the 6th man and plays primarily the non-Hali minutes. Mathurin is debatably better than Nembhard, but I think Nembhard’s defense is more valuable with Hali running the offense.

  2. We pretty much have a very similar team to what we did with our finals run. Something we needed terribly was rebounding. Some pieces that cannot be moved I think are siakam, mathurin, nembhard, nesmith, and McConnell. A person that we’re still all watching and hoping to get better is jarace walker. If he pans out… great… if he doesn’t, I wouldn’t be mad if we tried to make a move for something for next season.

I don’t think we necessarily have to make any big trades. This draft seems to be stacked with talent so hopefully we bring in one of the many who can make an impact immediately. A plus would be they have a knack for bringing in rebounds. Some guys can just see the ball before it comes off the rim and know where to be.

I’m just a fan, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but this is just my hypothesis and I’m probably wrong on all of it 😆.

  3. Starting: Hali/ Nembhard/ Furphy/ Aaron/ Siakam

Secondary: TJ, Sheppard, Huff, Mathews, Isaiah

Spot rotation: Walker, JRE, Jones, Bradley

We ultimately had to trade Math (hopefully for Zubac, in which case you can blow up the center rotation) when the Clippers offered him $30 million.

And we got Anicet “AJ” Dybantsa Jr. in the draft.

  4. First thing you have to do is decide which 2 you want to keep out of Nemby/Nesmith/Math. Pick 2 and keep them.

“But I want to keep all 3!”

And I want cake for dinner but my metabolism won’t allow it. Sorry, rules are rules. We can’t afford them.

Then, once you’ve picked who’s gone, try to work that person into a trade with at least one other bench part for a starting quality center. They don’t grow on trees, so it’s not like you can just conjure one out of no where, but we’ll need 30+ minutes of actual NBA center play to contend again, so find that.

Do those things and baby, you’ve got a stew goin’
