Washington Commanders Fans Just Got The Jayden Daniels Injury Update They’ve Been Waiting Weeks For!
[Music] Today on the Commander Support, Jaden Daniels made a big step towards potentially returning this week versus the Minnesota Vikings. A big step in that development that we’ll cover at the top of today’s show. Then we’ll get into a big reinforcement the Washington Commanders are getting on defense this week. We’ll finish up today’s show with two Commanders extension candidates that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn should consider extending before the 2026 NFL campaign. But before we get into the content today, here is some of our upcoming shows that we’re going to be doing on the show here over the next several weeks. Uh cut candidates, trade candidates. Uh also we’re going to have my perfect offseason plan. That’s one of the funnest videos that we do all throughout the NFL schedule. also weekly mock drafts and then offseason breaking news during free agency. During the draft, we make sure to get you guys uh coverage of every single big move that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn make over the course of the 2026 offseason. So, make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already to never miss any of our free content on the Burgundy and Gold right here on the Commander Report. So, let’s just dive right in here to our first story of the day, which is that Jaden Daniels, start quarterback for the Washington Commanders. I mean, a few weeks ago, man, we were talking about him like his season was over, that he was going to have to get some sort of surgery on that dislocated elbow because, I mean, we all assumed that there would be some ligament damage or at least some fractures uh in there, but uh very luckily that wasn’t the case. He had no ligament damage, no fractures in his elbow or his arm. And uh he’s now able to practice. He’s been practicing the last couple weeks actually and now uh he is fully back and he’s a full participant in in today’s practice. That is a huge step uh in terms of potentially playing this week versus the Minnesota Vikings. And what essentially full participation means, guys, is that he participated in team drills. So, uh you know, taking snaps from behind center, you know, with with semilive action. Obviously, the defensive players can’t touch him. He’s got the non-cont jersey on, but he’s taking live reps out there. Um, you know, going through progressions, doing all those things and not just doing individual drills, which is what he had been doing previously. So, the fact that doctors have cleared him to do that is definitely the next step in the progression here. Then the final step that Jaden Daniels is going to have to clear before Sunday’s game is that the doctors will have to clear him for contact. I would still say there’s a there’s a chance that that doesn’t happen, but the fact that he has gotten to full participation at this point in the week, I think his chances just went up by quite a bit for him to play this week on the road in Minnesota versus JJ McCarthy, his um you know, his his QB classmate last year in the NFL draft, who is expected to start for the Vikings on Sunday. So, predicted for me down there in the comment section. Will Jaden Daniels start for the Washington Commanders this week? Give me a yes or a no down there in the comments section for today’s pin question. And in just a second here, I’m going to tell you about our sponsor today at prize picks. While I tell you about today’s sponsor, simply give me a yes or a no to answer today’s pin question. With that, let’s have a word from our sponsor today at prize pickics. It is the holiday season officially, guys. And in my opinion, this is the best time of the year to be a sports fan. Bowl games, basketball matchups, playoff pushes, it’s all happening at once. And while all that action is going on, there is one place where it feels so good to be right, and that is prize picks. Prize Picks is super simple to play. Just pick more than or less than on at least two player stat projections. And if you get your picks right, you could cash in. My favorite feature about prize picks is how you play is really up to you. If you want a little bit more flexibility, you can choose the flex play where you can get paid even if one of your picks misses. And if you’re feeling particularly strong about a particular lineup and you want bigger payouts for it, I I would recommend going for the power play. No matter how you play though, prize picks is a great way to put your takes to the test and make some money. That is if you know ball. So for uh professional football here this weekend, I’m taking the less on Aaron Rogers passing yards, the more on rushing yards for Derrick Henry, and the more on rushing yards for Jaylen Warren, the Steelers running back. You guys can download the prize picks app today and use code CLNS. Get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup on the prize picks app today. prize picks. It’s good to be right. In other news today, the Washington Commanders did activate defensive end Drake off of IR. Uh Jackson has been on IR ever since the Washington Commanders signed uh him off of free agency. All the way back in October, midway through October, they signed him and we thought, “Hey man, this guy dealt with an injury last year. Now he’s back to fully healthy.” Wasn’t the case. Had to put him on IR and now he is finally activated off of the IR. He’s only 24 years old, really good size at 273 lbs. And of course, he’s an Adam Peters guy. Peters uh collaborated, of course, with John Lynch, the 49ers GM to draft Drake Jackson all the way up in round two of the 2022 NFL draft. So, this is still somebody that’s really young. He’s got some great size, some great functional strength, and you know, in this defense for the Washington Commanders, I cannot express how important it is for these edge rushers, especially on early downs to set the edges because when you have a guy like Bobby Wagner on the inside at offball linebacker, you know, you don’t want these running backs to get on the perimeter because we just don’t have enough speed at linebacker to go sideline to sideline. We’ve really seen uh this run defense here in Washington suffer because uh you you lost your two big bodies at defensive end for the season and Dorrence Armstrong and Dietri Weise, but now injecting Drake Jackson, a 24y old that’s got potentially a bright future in the National Football League down the stretch here. It’s a really big reinforcement for this Washington Commander defense. And I do think Jackson’s going to have a pretty heavy role in this defense immediately. I think that he will start on early downs on the other side of Jacob Martin at the edge rusher position. Right now, you still got Von Miller and Preston Smith as well. Um, and then Frankie Louvu rotates in sometimes to play edge, but I do think Jacob Martin and Drake Jackson. Uh, they bring enough size and enough physicality there where I think those two guys should be the starters on early downs. And of course, you’ve got Don Payne and Javon Kinlaw as your starters on the interior. I really like what I’m seeing from Eddie Goldman as well as a true run stuffer on early down. So, uh, this is a big reinforcement here. The Commanders have been waiting for Drake Jackson to get back here for a while. We’re still waiting on Demarcus Walker, uh, who is still ramping up. So, maybe he will, uh, get into the lineup this week as well. Uh but uh in a corresponding move here, because you’re adding Drake Jackson to the active roster, they had to release somebody, and it just so happened there was a player that asked for his release this week, and that was Darnell Savage, the safety, who is a uh who was a healthy scratch last week after Will Harris returned to the lineup uh versus uh the Denver Broncos last week. Of course, having Harris back means you don’t need as much depth at safety uh getting helmets and on the active roster, the game day roster. Uh, so they ended up making Savage a healthy scratch and I’m guessing Savage wants a chance to play or at least get a helmet. Uh, so he asked for his release and we’ll see if he gets picked up by anybody. Uh, but for now uh, he is certainly gone and Drake Jackson replaces his spot on the active roster. So, what say you guys? Let me know down there in the comments section. Drake Jackson will be back with Washington next season. Do you believe that’s true or not? Type B if you think Drake Jackson earns himself another contract here in Washington in 2026 and beyond, or type N if you think this is going to just be a rental for the rest of this year. Now, we’ll finish up today’s show here with a couple of 2026 extension candidates for your Washington Commanders. We’ll talk about Laramie Tonsel and Don Payne. Two players that have played very well in the trenches for the Washington Commanders this year that are entering the final years of their current contracts next year. So when that happens, sometimes players ask to get extended, they want to get paid, all that different stuff. Uh so you have to have these conversations and with the season already over essentially in terms of any playoff implications for the Washington Commanders, it’s never too early to get in front of these kinds of conversations. Now, when it comes to Laramie Tonsel, guys, I think he is the guy that you have to extend. All right, and we’ll talk about probably the number one reason for that here in just a second, but just generally speaking, he’s been really good for the Washington Commanders this year all season long. You can make an argument, you know, he’s a top three, maybe even the best pure pass protecting left tackle in the National Football League today. Um, he’s been that way for a number of years at this point. And, you know, he is that veteran rock on this offensive line to protect Jaden Daniels. He is, uh, past the age of 30, uh, but he’s still playing at a really high level. He actually has the highest PFF grade of his entire career, uh, with an 83.2 2 that ranks seventh among offensive tackles in the National Football League so far this year. And of course, he was traded to the Commanders this off season. And Washington gave up multiple picks for him. Okay. And that’s really the big reason why I think you want to bring him back because you gave up four draft picks uh to go get him. And of course, you get one back from the from the from the Houston Texans in that deal, but you’re still giving up essentially three draft picks there. And you know, whenever you invest three draft picks in somebody, you want them on your team for a number of seasons. And I know he’s already under contract for one more season, but I do think that, you know, if you invest that much and you’re giving up that much of your future, you’re expecting, you know, more than just two years from Laramie Tonsel. So, I think for the trade to be worth it at this point, he’s got to be here for a while. And for him to be here for a while, he’s got to have another contract. So, if you’re Adam Peters, if you’re Dan Quinn, get in front of that. you know, if you need to even add a little bit of cap space next year to add uh even more room for, you know, building up this roster, adding more veterans to the team, etc. Um, you know, to be able to afford Brandon Iuk, for example, or, you know, all these different guys that you could be bringing in. Um, you know, an extension makes sense for Laramie Tonsel if you if you’re planning on keeping him for more than just this next upcoming season. But then when you shift over to Don Payne, I think it’s a more of an interesting and kind of nuanced discussion there because if you ask me if I think Don Payne’s a good football player and can he help this team win ball games, the answer to that question is undeniably yes. He’s having an awesome season this year. He’s ranking 35th among 129 defensive tackles in the league according to Pro Football Focus grading. Not that it’s gospel, but just something to look at there. But, you know, he is getting closer to that 30year-old mark and uh he only has one year left on his current contract. Now, I think he’s having a really good season. Honestly, I’m not even sure if the numbers really um you know uh you know show exactly how well he’s playing on film because he’s playing very disruptively. He’s got six TFLs, five QB QB hits, and he does have one sack on the year. Uh, but my guess is because he’s playing so well on film this year and he knows the other NFL teams in the league are are watching that and he knows he’s getting older, this might be his time and maybe his final time to really cash in before he really starts to decline uh in his NFL career. All right, so I might want to sell high on Don Payne if he asks for a new contract, which I think that he will. I think at this point it makes sense for him to want to cash in one last time coming off a good season, especially if he has a good final stretch of this season. I think he’s going to want to get that uh new contract done. And with the Washington Commanders, you know, do you really want to pay, you know, a 29year-old drawn Payne a multi-year extension at that point? They’re already going to be giving Larry Tonsil, I think, an extension. He’s past the age of 30. Uh they already gave uh Terry McLuren, who’s past the age of 30 now, uh a brand new extension as well. Like, how many of these guys do you really want to give big contracts to? And if you can get like a day two draft pick in exchange for Don Payne, I think I would take that. I really would. this Commander team, you know, was kind of bereft of early uh draft capital this upcoming year. And as we know, this commander roster needs to get younger. So, if you can get a round two or a round three draft pick or or maybe even multiple draft picks for Don Payne in a deal that includes a day two draft pick, I think that’d be something that I’d be really interested in if I’m the Washington Commanders. Now, I’m not giving him away for nothing. All right? Um, you know, that’s not something where that I’m going to do. you know, I don’t think this will turn into like a Jonathan Allen situation where he asks for a new contract, the commanders say they don’t they don’t want to do it and then they cut him, I don’t think they’ll cut Don Payne. Um, but if there’s a team out there that really wants him and is offering like a day two draft pick in exchange for him, I think, you know, it might be around that time to sell high on Don Payne and get a younger player um in this building uh because of that. So, let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Should the Washington Commanders extend Don Payne next year or should they trade him? Type E if you would extend him or type T if you would trade him. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comment section. And that’ll be it for today’s slate of Commanders news and rumors. We’re going to have our u you know coverage tomorrow. Probably as an at home uh with the Commander final injury report for this week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings coming out tomorrow. We’ll probably have a good idea whether or not Jaden Daniels actually has a chance to play tomorrow. So, we’ll make sure to get you guys coverage of that tomorrow afternoon. Make sure you guys click that subscribe button and turn on your notifications so you know when that video comes out. [Music]
