Oh My… Miami Dolphins Fans Just Got So Much Major News

[Music] A lot of Miami Dolphins news to discuss on today’s edition of Dolphins Today. I am Nick Rolloloff. We are going to look at the injury report for Dolphins Jets week 14. Very positive for the Miami Dolphins. It’s something I want to highlight that I saw someone talk about on Twitterx. Plus, we also have an update for the next week. Yeah, we’re already looking ahead. Dolphin Steelers week 15 Monday Night Football and we’ll round out the show with Jonah Savinia, the second round rookie out of Arizona. Is he finally taking that next step of improvement on this Dolphins offensive line? But let’s get into the injury news first. And it is very rare to see such a clean injury report for the Miami Dolphins. Only three players limited on Wednesday’s practice. Uh Rousul Douglas, Alec, and Golden Darren Waller. But really, it’s only two players. Douglas with a foot injury. Alec Ingold with a neck injury. Obviously, Ingold left the game against the Saints last Sunday with a stinger. Did not return. Douglas played that entire game after missing back-to-back games against the Commanders and Bills. But Douglas seems to be good and ready to go. And you see Austin Jackson a full participant, Aaron Brewer, Bonito Jones, and Darren Waller being limited was only because of rest. So very rare can we say this, but the Miami Dolphins are fully healthy in week 14 of the NFL season. The only people missing are the people that have been on IR in the past like James Daniels, Jason Sanders, Ju Guu Brent. So anybody who’s on the active 53man roster currently, they’re healthy and playing. But I wanted to briefly talk about a potential change in strategy for the Miami Dolphins because oftent times we saw in the past with veterans, the Miami Dolphins give rest days throughout the week, limited participants like we saw with Darren Waller here. But I saw someone talk about this on Twitter over the past two, three weeks in the latter half of the season. Have we saw and be seeing a ton of veterans having rest days on Wednesdays on Thursdays? I don’t think we have. I think it’s a sign that Mike McDaniel has maybe learned from the past mistakes that he’s had of giving veterans rest day late in the season because they don’t end up being as sharp in the practice is very valuable throughout the week. Like I think he wants people practicing. And I think this is a great shift in mentality if this is on purpose for Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins because Miami has always ended the year poorly under McDaniel. Think about that massive losing streak in Mike’s first year with the team in 2022. Think about the collapse a little bit in 2023 where they ultimately blew that division lead. you consistently saw practice days be kind of thrown to the wayside, if you will, to give rest days to veteran to make sure they’re healthy. And obviously, you want to make sure your guys are healthy, but you also want to make sure they are sharp going into each game day. And even though I don’t think Miami was that sharp against the Commanders or Saints in their last two games, but got away with it because of inferior opponents, I like to see them practicing more rather than having veterans resting and not participating in practice at all. You are two and a half point favorites on the road against the Jets. Overunder, not that high, but yes, it’s going to be poor weather conditions potentially in terms of the cold, but Miami needs to continue to build this positive momentum, specifically Mike McDaniel, if he wants to retain his job in the 2026 season. And you’re playing a Jets team that certainly isn’t as healthy as you are. Lot of key contributors for New York banged up. More importantly, Germaine Johnson, DNP on Wednesday with an ankle injury. One of their starting corners, Jarvis Brownley Jr. DNP with a hip injury. You have Will McDonald who probably will be available to play in this game. He was limited with an ankle injury. But you have a couple key defensive players like Germaine Johnson, Brown Lee, and even McCra Ball banged up and not practicing on Wednesday. Doesn’t mean they’re not going to play on Sunday, but it does mean they’re not 100% healthy. This should be a game Miami wins. And I know some people earlier on in the year wanted Miami to kind of tank to get a higher draft pick. Obviously, that’s kind of out of the table now. Miami at worst can finish five and 12, which won’t be good enough to secure a top five pick in the draft. Could be anywhere between six and 10 potentially with a lot of teams being bad this season. But I think at this point you should root for the right process, which is putting your best foot forward every single week and winning ball games. Plus, I never want to lose to the Jets anyway. So, this should be a game Miami wins. It could be their fourth straight win. It could be their fifth win in the last six games as they continue to try to make a push for the postseason. If they get there, they win. They’ll be six and seven. They’re the healthier team. They’re the better team. Let’s see if they can go get a win. But I also teased that we’re looking ahead to week 15 for the Steelers Dolphins game. Well, that was scheduled to be a Monday Night Football game, and it actually will stay on Monday Night Football. The NFL had a deadline 12 days prior to that game, which ultimately was Wednesday, to flex Dolphin Steelers. There was no flex made. So, we will see Dolphins Steelers on Prime Time Monday Night Football on ESPN/ABC in week 15. And I actually do understand the NFL’s decision not to flex. Sure, there are some really good games in that window. I believe there’s Dolph or Bills Patriots in a big time AFC showdown. I think there was like Seahawks Colts that could be flexed as well. But the reason why I think this is staying, I think this is an elimination game. I mean, it is. And you could argue both teams already are eliminated from playoff contention. The Steelers have been terrible. The Dolphins have a long shot chance to make the postseason, but you look at these two teams here, the Dolphins, if they win this week against the Jets, will be six and seven. The Steelers, even if they lose this week, I believe they’re playing the Ravens, are six- seven or seven- six. Like, if Miami and Pittsburgh, let’s say, both are six- seven coming into this game, whoever loses on Monday Night Football to fall to six and eight, call it done. I mean, that could be the end of it. So, if this is a battle of two six and seven teams, this is big- time playoff stuff here. And maybe it won’t be a mathematical elimination for whoever loses that game on Monday Night Football, but in all retrospect, you lose that game to fall to six and eight, assuming both teams are six and seven going into the game, it’s over, folks. And that’s why I think Miami is ultimately going to stay on prime time there. But there’s actually another game that is going to be in consideration to be flexed. It’s the following week. I don’t know what the NFL was thinking here before the year. They scheduled Miami back-to-back prime time games in the month of December. They have a Sunday night football matchup currently scheduled against the Cincinnati Bengals for week 16. Now, this is going to be an interesting one because the Bengals are 4-8 and the NFL will need to make this decision on if they flex this game next week because I told you that 12-day window. So, if they ultimately see this weekend the Dolphins beat the Jets to go to six and seven and the Bengals go into Buffalo and beat the Bills to improve to 5-8, I think the NFL might keep this game. Now, if the Bengals lose to the Bills this Sunday, they’re 4-9 and eliminated from playoff contention, it’s like, all right, probably flex this game. But if Joe Burrow is back, they’ve won a couple straight against the Ravens and Bills and it’s a battle of a 6-8 Dolphins versus 6 and8 Bengals potentially in week 16 or a seven- seven verse 6 and8. Maybe that game ultimately stays on Sunday Night Football. All right, we’ll move on from injury news and schedule talk to some football discussion on left guard Jonah Savina and if he is improving. But I want to give a shout out to our sponsor first and that is Prize Picks. It is the holiday season. Bowl games, playoff pushes, basketball matchups on display. Prize picks. It’s good to be right. I briefly mentioned it earlier this week that Jonah Savinia, the rookie left guard, has been improving a little bit over the past two weeks, month if you will. And the offensive coordinator, Frank Smith, um actually explained, which this was a typo from Joe Shad, obviously isn’t the offensive line coach. Um but Jonah has been getting better. And Smith noted that he’s been better in terms of using his aggressiveness and at times leaning on approach and technique and there has been improvement. I am not going to sit up here and act like there hasn’t been steps in the right direction for Jonas Savinia specifically over the last two games Miami’s played. Week 11 against the Commanders, week 13 against the Saints. I mean, you look at his PFF grades and it’s been significantly better. I mean, there was a time in the season, folks, where we were looking at the pass blocking grades and they were at zero 0.0 multiple times this season and multiple times under 20 block pass blocking grade. Obviously much improved over the last two games Miami’s played 64 and 73.8. It’s been a better improvement. There’s no doubt about that. And this is stuff you like to see development because Miami, even if they don’t make the playoffs this year, which is very likely, the one thing that you want to see over the last five games of the season is Kenneth Grant, Jonah Savinia, Jordan Phillips, Zeke Biggers, and some of these other rookie guy players and secondyear guys making the right steps forward to cement their places on the roster next season to where maybe they can be more pivotal, productive pieces that contribute to winning for the Miami Dolphins. More coming on Jonah here, but have you gained more confidence in Jonah Savi and as the season has gone on? Why for yes or N for no? Now, I’m going to play devil’s advocate here because there has been clear improvement on Jonah’s side and overall on the offensive line, but there has still been so many damn mistakes. We showed the PFF grades. He was credited for a sack given up on Sunday against the Saints, and it was so frustrating. I I think I highlighted the play on Monday to where the entire offensive line Miami shifted left. It was a clear directive from Tua Tongaloa and Jonah moves right off the snap and it ultimately allows a blitzing linebacker from the second level on his side to go untouched to the quarterback Tua. And it’s because Jonah made the mistake of going inside rather than outside. Like those stuff can’t happen. And I get it, he’s a rookie, but like we’re now 12 games into your NFL career here. We can’t be having these mental mistakes continue to happen. It just simply can’t happen. And there has been a step up, but I also want to highlight it hasn’t been much of a step up. Like he’s gone from the worst offensive lineman in the league to the seventh worst offensive lineman in the league. And this is just offensive guards, but through the 57 qualified guards week one through eight, he was the worst. 57. And yes, his PFF overall grade has gone up 21 grade points from weeks 1 through eight to weeks 10 through 13. It’s still good for seventh worst in the NFL at the guard spot. So, yeah, there’s been improvement, but he’s still a severely below average guard at this point. He’s not above average. And I also want to highlight, sure, he’s had two solid performances in a row against the Commanders and Saints. We’re talking about two of the worst pass rushes and defensive lines. in all the NFL. The Saints have the 29th ranked pass rush. The Commanders have the 22nd. That’s on PFF, but you look at pressure rate from both of those pass rushes as well. And they both rank in the bottom half in the NFL, too. Like, it just simply has not been good for the course of the season. And although it has gotten a little bit better, I’m appreciative of that. I don’t want to act like he’s been elite. It just had not the case whatsoever. And as you continue to move forward with the rest of the season and and overall, you have to wonder how the coaching staff in the front office feels about Jonah going forward because you do have most of your offensive line under contract for next season. Patrick Paul third out of four years of his rookie deal. Jonah second of his four years. Aaron Brewer in his final year of his contract. Austin Jackson final year of his contract. James Daniels will be in year two of three of his deal at that right guard spot. Like Jonah could be here for a long time. But I’m also going to make the statement right now, I’m not penciling Jonah Savinia in as a long-term starter. If he ultimately is the starting left guard for Miami again next season, so be it. I’m not going to maybe look to make the switch from him already. I’ll maybe give him one more chance to start at left guard. But if he’s able to come become one, that’s massive. It really is. If he has the ability to improve over the final five weeks, take what we’ve seen over the last two games and continue to have that grow against superior opponents. Well, having a left tackle, left guard combination for the rest of the season or the rest of the next four or five years is just so massive. It is. It would allow Miami to really commit to the style of play that they’ve had over the last month of running the football consistently and it would just make life a lot easier on Tua and the Dolphins front office if they feel good about that left side of the offensive line going forward. That’ll do it for today’s show. If you want more content, make sure you subscribe. And if you’re still watching and aren’t subscribed, what are you waiting for? Might as well join the channel. The Dolphins injury report looks good as Miami had just 3 players who were limited participants. However, the Dolphins vs Jets NFL Week 14 matchup could be difficult for New York, as the Jets injury report has 8 players including 6 who did not practice. One player who will play for Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is Jonah Savaiinaea, who has been improving the last two weeks.

  1. Yall better quit overlooking Jets. This is a game I expect them to lose. They Tua has been holding the offense back, you better believe the Jets will be coming after him with everything they have. I will NOT be surprised if Fins lose. Fins Up, but lower your expectations
