ALERT: Red Sox Trade Jhostynxon Garcia To The Pirates For Johan Oviedo | Instant Reaction + Analysis
[Music] Breaking news, Red Sox fans, we have a trade alert. Trade alert. The Boston Red Sox are acquiring Johan Oedo among two other prospects from the Pittsburgh Pirates. But that is not the biggest name that is being traded away in this trade. The password. Yost Stinson Garcia is headed to Pittsburgh. Here are the full trade details. Johan Ovieredo, right-handed pitcher with some major league experience, is coming back to the Red Sox. Tyler Sego and Adonis Guzman, I’m probably going to butcher these names just off the top, so please forgive me for that. Those three are headed to the Red Sox. In return, Yostin Garcia and Jesus Traviso are headed to the Pirates. We are going to talk about all of the trade details that you need to know. But first, when the Red Sox make a move, we make a video and uh that’s why you’re going to want to hit that damn sub button because we had the Sunny Gray trade pretty quickly as soon as the trade came out. As soon as this trade happened, I put a short up and we’re filming a full length video for you guys. We are 46 subs away from our next milestone of 7,800 subscribers. When the Red Sox make a move, we’re going to make a video. And this trade kind of signals to me that more moves might be on the way. You’re not going to want to miss this, especially with the winter meetings next week. So, subscribe and join the channel today. All right, so trade alert. Yosten Garcia headed to the Pittsburgh Pirates. that is the big name that is being uh moved around in this trade. Uh number three prospect in the Red Sox system was the top outfield prospect in the Red Sox system. Had what was it two games up in the majors this past season. Didn’t do anything in those two games. Um, but yeah, he was a player that was teased for a lot of big name trades, a lot of blockbuster trades and and and in my short I said, you know, I don’t know if I love this trade because you’re giving away Yos Stinson for what seems to be pennies on the dollar when he could have been a key piece in a bigger trade soon. Now, that’s not what this is. I will get into each one of these players individually, what the Red Sox are getting back, but Johan Ovo being a headliner in a trade for Yost Stinson Garcia, it doesn’t really move the needle for me. Now, Yostinson’s really the only big player that’s going. Um, excuse me. Uh, Jesus Traviso is like a rookie ball player that doesn’t have really any experience whatsoever. So it really is Yostin Garcia for Johan Odo and the two other prospects. But nonetheless, I was at least a little shocked that he got moved in a move that was not by any stretch of the imagination a blockbuster. I do want to show some love to the Password because he was hyped up. He was a monster in the miners. I’m sure he’ll be successful in Pittsburgh. Was it ever really going to work out in Boston? Probably not because there was so many outfielders. So, it did make sense that an outfielder was going to get traded this off seasonason and and it made sense that the password was going to be one of those outfielders. I don’t think they’re done trading outfielders. This does not mean Jiren Durant is safe by any stretch of the imagination, but I want to show some love to the password. So, go spam your passwords in the comments. The best name nickname in all of baseball, I think. So, shout out to the password. Good luck in Pittsburgh. Hopefully, you flourish and have a very successful career. All right, let’s get into the nitty-gritty here. I’ve got notes on all of these players that the Red Sox are getting back. Let’s start with Johan Oedo. Obviously, the biggest name the Red Sox are getting back. He has experience in the majors since 2020. So, he’s been around for five years. A career RA of four to four. And uh yeah uh let’s not go to this one just in case uh because I don’t think that those stats are fully correct. But uh but yes, let’s not go to that one. But um let’s just talk about OVO a little bit more. He’s got some upside is what I will say. He had a 357 RA and a 4.92 FIP in nine starts this past season. These are coming via Tyler Milikid. His control is a bit all over the place. He did have Tommy John a year or so ago and so there are some concerns there. There are some concerns about his control. This would be from lack of a better term a candidate with upside that the Red Sox need to mold. He is a rotation candidate, a lower rotation candidate um that still has years of control. He’s ARB eligible projected to make $2 million in 2026. That’s coming from Chris Catillo. Um and has upside. He’s got upside. If the Red Sox can mold him, he could become an interesting, you know, maybe lower mid rotation piece for the Red Sox. It’s not going to move the needle this year. I don’t think it’s going to move the needle at all this year. But you are stocking up on starting pitching depth. It’s weird because Brezlo said leading into the off season that they weren’t going to he didn’t say quote unquote waste their time, but basically he was saying we’re not going to waste our time bringing in fours and fives. We’re going to go after a certified dog as a number two. Well, I think a lot of us don’t consider Sunny Gray a number two. and Johan Ovo sure as hell is not a number two. Do they both have upside? Sure, but they’re not what I think a lot of us envision. So, I am a little bit confused as the as of the avenue that the Red Sox are going down here. The one thing that I would consider in this is that one of the other Red Sox starting pitchers might be expendable. And the name that everyone’s talking about is Brian Beo. Brian Beo’s name has been brought into the rumors a little bit. Not saying anything’s concrete, not saying anything’s going to happen. They are strictly rumors and speculation, but could a Brian Beao be on the move to maybe a Milwaukee for a Freddy Peralta? Could Brian Beo be on the move to Arizona for a Catel Marte? Again, these are all speculation. These are all rumors. None of this is concrete. But Johan Odo coming in could be a piece in the back end of the rotation to supplement if you trade away a Brian Beao. So that’s interesting. And again, the up the upside with Oedo is definitely there. So that’s why a Yostin Garcia is going in this trade because you’re getting three prospects. Well, two prospects in Johan Odo for basically one player. So the more I think about it, the more I don’t fully mind it. Again, I think we all expected Yost Stinson to be in some sort of big blockbuster trade, but you’ve got other trade ships you can trade away for a bigger starting pitcher or a bigger bat. So, yeah, Johan Vo, if molded correctly, and I think the Red Sox have one of the best pitching labs in all of baseball, could be a stud in the next few years. We shall see. Let’s talk about the other two prospects here real quick as well. Uh Tyler Samgo, that name I’m going to continue to butcher until the day I die. These notes come via Tyler Milikin. 26-y old lefty spent the majority of 2025 in AAA 308 RA a 242 whip in 26 and a3 innings. 10.3k per n 2.1 walk per nine. So those are interesting numbers to say the least. Uh I love the 10.3k per nine. I love the 2.1 walk per nine. Only 26 and a third innings of work. So, a smaller sample size, but you know, he could be a stud. He could be a stud. I think there is a lot that we still need to see. Um, he’s got a career 382 erra in the miners. There are things there that I think the Red Sox obviously saw some sort of um saw stuff that they liked, saw stuff that fit their profile. So, that’s a very interesting uh addition to the Red Sox uh the Red Sox farm system. Again, obviously someone the Red Sox see something in uh that they’re getting back in return. Uh Don Guzman is a very interesting prospect actually in my opinion. Uh this this info comes via Socks prospects. Played 62 games for the University of Arizona last season. My dad is going to be incredibly happy because he’s a University of Arizona grad. He was the fifth round pick for the Pittsburgh Pirates in this past draft and he had 43 runs, nine home runs, 45 RBI’s. He slashed a 328 average with a 907 OPS at the University of Arizona. His calling card is defense throughout 17 runners last year. Hasn’t had a lot of time in the miners. Really no time. He was low a rookie ball, you know, barely, literally one game last year. So, he’s had no experience in the minors yet, but he hits for contact and he’s really good defensively as a catcher. And that’s something that Brezlo has been kind of prioritizing this off seasonason is catching depth in the farm system. So, honestly, the more I think about it, I don’t hate the trade. I said in my short that I wasn’t a big fan. I did need to get more information and uh I I I don’t hate the trade. You’re giving up Yost Stinson Garcia. As much as it is sad to lose him, um you are getting three players with interesting upside to say the least. We’ll see what happens with Johan Ovo. Maybe he’s in the bullpin for a little bit. Maybe he is at the back end of your rotation. It’s interesting to see what’s going to happen with him. And then these are two interesting prospects. They’re not in like the top 30, top 100, whatever prospect. They’re not in the top 100 pipeline or anything like that. They’re not bigname prospects, but obviously the Red Sox saw something in them that was worthy of trading away Garcia. So, I actually don’t hate the trade, but you let me know. Grade the trade for me. A, B, C, D, or F. Get down below in the comments for me right now and grade the trade for me. Last but not least, a move that had to happen because Tyler Sam San Diego was protected from the rule five draft. So, he was on the Pirates 40man roster. Cooper Kriswell was DFA by the Red Sox. As Tyler Milikin states, it’s not a super shocking development with the money they gave him on that one-year deal. It was less than a million dollars. I think that we would all hope that he’ll pass through the system and still be depth. That’s what Tyler Milikin says, and I agree. Cooper Chriswells could be a very valuable depth piece for the Red Sox this year if he passes through waiverss if he does not get claimed by another team. But bringing in uh San Diego as a as another uh 40man roster spot, you had to DFA someone and uh Cooper Kriswell was that guy. Thank you all so much for taking time to watch this video. That is where we’re going to end it. Uh please bear with me. Like this was kind of an all over the place video because we’re just getting the details as they are coming in. I appreciate you all watching. I hope I gave you all enough information. The Red Sox are trading Yost Stinson Garcia away. They get three guys back in return. Make sure you subscribe. We’ve got two more videos coming out for you guys in the next few days and the winter meetings start next week. You’re not going to want to miss it. So, hit that subscribe button right now and until next time, go socks. [Music]

Guzman looks like a good prospect- they have to re-stock catching and hopefully this kid could be the Kyle Teel
Oviedo is a beast size wise like Crochet. 6’6 275 lbs with awesome extension!
The password would have been a great replacement for Rafaela in a year or two.
Yay! We are contenders now.
It would be funny if password breaks out and becomes a 30 home run guy
Early can replace Bello.
This screams we made a move just for the sake of making a move 😅
This add to the pitching depth would make sense in a trade for Katel Marte. The Diamondbacks have made it clear they are looking for pitching for at least part of the return. Could see one of Bello or Crawford being potential pieces. Makes even more sense if we also get Cole Ragans.

This is a depressing one. Not sure any of the prospects in return help the major league ball club this season.
I certainly saw The Password going in a deal for a real #2.
Its not terrible, we got a catcher i dont think hes a top prospect in the pjrates system but somstning to keep aftwr Teal(if thats how you spell it) and another pitching prospect why not , assuming Breslow has been looking at therw farm for a while now

Ok. Pittsburgh gets back Garcia. I want Teel back from Chicago.

So in typical Red Sox fashion we traded away a good prospect for another half dead arm.
At first blush don’t like this for the pirates as Oviedo is a beast and looked better and better as he came back from TJ late last year. I really think he can be a mid to upper level rotation guy for any team and the Bucs are losing a stud in a rotation of studs. We need bats though and hope this helps both clubs where they need it .
Oviedo’s numbers after coming back last season were good, not great, but the Sox have developed one of the best pitching labs in baseball that can hopefully unlock the next level for him. He’s also entering his age 27 season and is a giant with excellent extension, and he’s got a decent amount of team control left, so there’s decent upside there. Garcia is a solid prospect with serious power potential, but he is at best fifth on the OF/DH depth chart for a team that has a massive logjam in that area. It was hard to see him being a legitimate contender for playing time in 2026, barring the Sox having made a trade that sent away some combo of two of Duran, Abreu or Yoshida. I also don’t think any of the teams that are potential trade partners for a number 2 are going to disappear now because Password is no longer part of the package.
My main concern is, we now have a whole lot of 3-5 starters. If Bello takes another step forward like he did last season (not out of the question for a 26 year old), I think he‘s got the potential to become a legitimate 2, but he’s a 3 right now. Gray is a 3. Oviedo is probably a 4 right now. Early showed potential to be at least a low 3 last season with an advanced pitch mix, sequencing and command for someone so young, but he will need to adjust as his sample size grows. Tolle’s ceiling is dependent on what his changeup and slider look like this spring; it’s entirely possible he goes into 2026 with legitimate comparisons to Crochet, it’s also well within reason he doesn’t develop the secondary stuff further and ends up in a late inning role. Harrison has the pedigree, but I haven’t seen anything that convinces me he’s more than a 4 or 5. Crawford, Sandoval, Dobbins, Sandlin, Uberstine, Drohan, and Houck are all some combo of returning from injury/not yet graduated from prospect status and none of them profiles above a low 3/high 4. There is a massive amount of depth here, especially with Perales and Witherspoon waiting in the wings, but no guy jumps out to me as the clear Game 2 starter in a playoff series. Valdez is the only free agent left who could be that guy, and someone like Bubic, Greene or Ryan could as well. It’s still early in the offseason, but I’m worried we’ll get to March and Breslow/ownership will point to the Gray and Oviedo trades as their big moves, and that’s likely not enough to keep pace with the Yankees and Blue Jays, let alone the NL.
My grade is D. You have to give something up to get something. In my opinion Garcia yes should of been moved but in a deal for a Joe Ryan or Hunter Greene type of player. I would of been happier with a Jared Jones or Ashcraft but oh well. Its a something deal but i feel its kinda a nothing deal with what you got back. Oveido was dumped by the Cardinals for poor performance and probably heading to a DFA scenario in Pittsburgh
They DFA Cooper Criswell but keep Jovani Moran?
Oviedo's future in Boston might be in the bullpen
