San Jose Sharks’ Michael Misa RETURNS, World Juniors BUZZ | Sharks Get STEAMROLLED By Capitals

Michael Misa has been sent to the AHL on a conditioning stint. The San Jose Sharks were scheduled to play a game against the Cavs. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked on Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. I want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen, proudly part of the Locked On Network, the number one sports podcast network, where we cover your team every day. And if you want to be an everyday, all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcasts. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. And today, we’ll be talking about Michael Misa going to the AHL, which is good news as he uh ramps back up from his injury and what that can mean for potential World Junior’s appearance. Uh we’ll talk about this game that was scheduled to happen uh that actually took place and uh was not pretty. And John Clingberg’s time, buddy, it’s not looking great for Clingberg. Then we’ll go through some other musings of this game as Sam Dickinson actually put together a nice performance in what was a poopfest uh known as the Sharks Capitals game. So uh let’s go start with of course the big news from today. Michael Misa put on LTIR and then also put uh being conditionally loaned to the San Jose Barracuda. So, uh, of course we know Misa hurt his foot in practice a few weeks ago. Um, has been slowly ramping up. Him and Jeff Skinner have both returned to practice. Um, and now Michael Misa is going to go play in the AHL just as a reminder. So, uh, because again, right, everyone’s saying, well, he can’t play in the AHL, etc., etc. You can be if you’ve missed more than five games, which Michael Misa has clearly missed more than five games, uh you can be sent to the AHL to play uh in two weeks worth of for basically for two weeks to allow you to ramp back up. And it doesn’t matter with Michael Misa not being old enough uh to play in the AHL. This supersedes this rule supersedes that rule, if that makes sense. Um, so Michael Misa is getting to play in the AHL. We’ve seen this before. We just saw Vincent Aorio from this, you know, the Sharks defenseman playing in on a conditioning loan with the Barracuda. Uh, we’ve seen other young prospects. Uh, Shane Wright did it uh famously in that year where he played for like four teams in one season. Uh, where he was part of the Kraken, he played for the Firebirds, he played for like OHL teams, etc. Like he did it. Uh, LA Kings defenseman Brandt Clark also did it as well. Um, so I really like this move for Michael Misa to kind of get back into action. We know like the Sharks have been very like training wheels on Michael Misa and stuff and I think this is a great opportunity for him to kind of get back into the group and play big minutes. Um, and this Barracuda team is uh on fire. Noted wagon. uh this Barracuda team is and they get to have Michael Misa here for a couple weeks as he again ramps back up. None of these games also count towards Michael Misa’s nine games in the NHL, of course, because he’s not playing nine an NHL game. So, uh the Sharks still have the option to send him back to Sageno in the OHL if they want, but I I I’m still lean very much in the the Sharks should keep Michael Mis around, especially if he has a good AHL stint. uh and then maybe whatever happens after that. But uh so Michael Misa going to be going to play in the AHL. The nice thing is he could potentially be reunited with former linemate Igor Chernov. And Chernos and Misa both played together last year uh in the OHL with the Sagal Spirit. And uh they were very good together. Uh as you know, of course, Misa put up a bajillion points. Uh but Igor Shernes who you know started the season uh dealing with a shoulder in coming off a shoulder surgery joined the OHL kind of midway through uh and you know you wondered like how is a guy like Sherneshave going to perform uh you know jumping to a new league etc etc. Uh Sherneshave of course in 23 games with the Sagon Spirit played had 19 goals, 36 assists for 55 points um in those 23 games and then also uh had six points in five playoff games before coming over and play with the Barracuda. Shernave has also been an incredibly effective player with the Barracuda uh in 20 games this season. He has 10 goals, nine assists, and 19 points and was just named the AHL’s rookie of the month for the month of November. So you have Sherneshaw playing well and Quinton Musty who’s been playing extremely well as too. Um you have a chance to unite this line together and give you a an actual glimpse of a real line for the Sharks in the future here with a potential Quint Musty uh Michael Misa Igor Shernishov line that that could be like the Sharks second line as soon as potentially next year, right? Um especially because like you expect Misa to be in the NHL the way Sherneshave and Musty are playing like it’s if they continue to play the way that they’re playing it very much looks like one and done potentially for both Musty and Shernes and we get to see what this potentially looks like right now in the AHL on an extremely hot Barracuda team uh which had gotten points I think out of 12 out of the last 13 uh games And uh we get we know for sure Misa will be playing this weekend against Tucson uh with the Shark with a Barracuda at home. Um and of course Teddy Bear Toss game on Saturday as well for the Barracuda. I’m really mad. I can’t make the Barracuda the Teddy Bear toss game this year. Side note really like quickly. If you’ve never been to a Teddy Bear Toss game, uh 100% like go. You’ll have a blast. Uh bring a bunch of stuffed animals. Like you don’t have to bring just one, bring a bunch. Um it is an absolute blast. Uh just the the excitement for that moment. That’s my like teddy bear toss. Like go. Uh it’s usually a family tradition that we go. We can’t make it this year. Uh but is a family tradition that we we’ve gone the past couple years. And uh I’m very disappointed that we can’t go this year, but uh some like if you if you’ve never been, one million% go. Uh, so much fun. Anyway, back to Misa. So, uh, with Misa, you know, playing in the AHL, this also potentially leads for him to play in World Juniors this year for Team Canada. So, if his uh, stint starts now uh, for two weeks, so that would not a math guy, but 14 plus three is 18. Uh, that would be December 18th. um is kind of when his uh time runs out, like his conditioning stint runs out. Um, Team Canada, like December 15th is is I believe when Team Canada is supposed to uh have their their start of their camp um for the World Juniors. So, we could potentially see, you know, depending what the Sharks want to do here, if they feel like Misa could use some more time, or maybe they just want him to go back and and kind of just rate just go go have fun for a couple weeks, uh, go try to win a World Juniors, etc., etc. And Misa would would probably be um the best or one of the best players on that team. I know Gavin Kenna is also going to be there as well, but he would be like playing first line minutes like ton of uh like big time opportunities, etc., etc. Like Misa would get a chance to do that. Um, so maybe that’s what the Sharks want to do here is, you know, let Misa go play in the AHL, have fun with his friend Sherneshov, kind of get back into the, you know, after missing some time with with his injury, go and then if he builds up his confidence, go play in the World Juniors, go try to win a championship. uh go play against kids your age and then we’ll see you for the second half of the season here. Uh where you can the nice thing too is with the way the schedule’s kind of set up for basically you’ll have a month and play a bunch of games there. we can really kind of get you back in the flow of things. Uh you have the uh Olympic break and then you kind of have like a two-month, okay, like let’s go after the two months here or I think it’s like a month and a half, two months of let’s go. Uh let’s let’s kind of take the training wheels off and let’s go with me and get you geared up for next year. That way you can come in uh like we saw with Will Smith, right? Where you can come in and just kind of uh jump in. you know exactly what your role is going to be as a second line center and you can kind of come in hot and ready to go next year. So that’s my guess is the plan. Maybe the Sharks don’t want to send him uh you know especially if they have some injuries or whatever. Uh they don’t want to send him back uh because you never know, right? Of course there’s always the risk of injury. You know look at Matthew Schaefer who hurt famously hurt himself at the World Juniors. But no matter I mean it’s hockeyy’s a physical sport. If you play at World Juniors, you play in the NHL. you play in the AHL or you just practice for one of those, you have a chance to hurt yourself. So, uh we’ll see what what the Sharks decide to do with Michael Misa here. But, uh it’s just good to see him kind of start the to get back here. I cannot wait for Friday’s night’s uh Barracuda game as uh uh I really hope they put together the musty cllingberg or sorry not clingingberg musty uh sherner sha misa line and just say go have fun kids because I think uh that line would be really awesome to see. So uh we’re going to talk about John Clingberg who had another tough night tonight and uh why I think the sharks need to cut bait. I I think the John Clingberg experiment uh we know what this is now and the Sharks need to move on. So, we’re going to discuss that here in just one second. NFL Sundays move fast. I continue to hammer the Darren Waller anytime touchdowns. I love the anytime touchdowns because it’s fun to root for guys scoring touchdowns. Uh and the Dolphins have like three people who can score touchdowns and Darren Waller is one of them. Uh or I know the Niners are on by, but CMC uh touchdown as well. Uh, again, he’s really good and he scores a lot of touchdowns. So, if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit FanDuel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. Uh of course, reactions after Sharks Games and something special we’re announcing at the Lockdown Network coming on uh Monday. Uh so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. All right. Uh John Clingberg uh who fair to say it was a rough night for for old for old Clingy. Um he of course as we have seen a bunch of times right where ill time turnovers um or Jessica gets bullied at the blue line um turns into the puck going the other way. Right. And um between him and Ferraro losing containment on Alex Ovetkin who uh if you’re new to hockey and maybe this was the first hockey game you ever watched. Um Alex Ovetchkin pretty good at scoring goals. In fact, some would say he’s the best to ever score uh goals in the NHL as he is the NHL’s record holder with goals scored. Um, I would for one, not a coach, noted idiot with a microphone and plenty of people told me, uh, noted idiot with this podcast. I would cover Alex Ovetchkin near the net. Just me, one man’s opinion. But, uh, leaving Alex Ovetkin all alone and having the puck come to him feels like it’s going to be a bad time. And it was a bad time tonight as Oveskin scores two goals. Um, and if this is Alice Ovkin’s last game in the Shark Tank, uh, what a way to go out because that man has very limited times played the Sharks, but he always torments the Sharks. And, uh, if you never have gotten a chance to see a Vetkin uh, score a goal in real life, it’s pretty awesome uh, to say. I have to say it’s pretty awesome watching a Vetkin score a goal in real life. Um but uh lose containment there on the on the the first goal of the game, right? Um and then again on the power play where we have seen this multiple times and I just talked about it recently, right? The book is out on John Clingberg at the point any sort of pressure and he folds faster than Superman on laundry day. Uh any like you you just get physical and just try to body him, he’s going to lose the puck. And we saw right he tries to get on the back check. Just not a great effort on the back check um as well. And then the shark or the it’s it’s four nothing on the short-handed goal and the game’s over from there. Right. That that was your last grasp. Like you had to score on that power play to at least make it a game. Make it three to one. Okay. Get back to the dressing room, lick your wounds, and then try to come out and figure something out for the second period. Right? Then that happens. And like if this was Muka Madan or Dickinson doing that, you and I both know neither one of those guys or seeing the ice the rest of the game on something like that, right? I mean, we’ll talk about Dickinson some more later, but Dickens had kind of a, you know, a similar play, but like he fumbled the puck at the blue line um you know, in the second period. It was later in the second period, fumbled the puck at the blue line, but you see the effort for him to get back and try to to stop um you know, try to be helpful and stop whatever is going on where Clingberg again just like just poor effort, man. And I like I will be the first I I thought that John Clingberg I thought that John Clingberg was signing was worth the risk, right? And it is clearly not working out for the Sharks. Um, and you know, whatever hope or idea that the Sharks are going to trade John Clingberg before the deadline and get something for him, that that has to be thrown out the window. What contending team looks at what John Clingberg has put on tape and says, “Bro, I need some of that, Mikey. Let me send you something nice for that because uh we definitely need that on our team.” It’s been a disaster. It has been a disaster with Clingberg. And I don’t know how the Sharks can continue to trot him out there and just say like, “Yep, it’s going to work this time, right? It’s going to work this time.” Um, I mean, you can watch Power Play one versus Power Play two. Um, you know, Kyle and I talked about the other day which power play looks more efficient and looks better. It’s power play two with Orive and with lesser talent, right? because they just shoot the puck, right, and get the puck on net. Um, and when Clingberg, ever since Clingberg has joined Power Play One, it just does not look as good. Um, and you know, I I I’ve talked about before and Orav on Power Play One, let him to be the point guard, keep the puck in. At least when Orlav is at at the point like he can keep cool under pressure and keep the puck in the net or like in the zone, at least get it to somebody. We’ve seen this multiple times from Clayberg. And again, I know this team isn’t is probably not going to make the playoffs, but you’re playing with one hand tied behind your back and this team is still just not talented enough to put themselves in these situations. Um, John Clingberg, you got to he’s got to go, right? And I mean, again, you’re not going to be able to trade him because who wants John Clingberg right now? Again, what GM is saying, get me that. We can fix him. Um, and okay, you send him to the AHL, then you’re just taking minutes away from Luca Canon, right? and or Jack Thompson or whomever else like and of course he’s not going to agree to a you know for a a player like him like why would he agree to have his contract terminated because he knows the market out there there’s no not going to be people clamoring for him. So, um, the Sharks are are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with John Clingberg. And, uh, I mean, unless you want to do the classic thing where you just ice him for a while and then, you know, for basically half the season and then, uh, if he needs to come up and play occasionally or something like that, you do that. But, I just I don’t know how you can continue to run him out there and expect different results. We know what he John Clayberg is right now and he’s just not the guy he is. He used to be unfortunately like I thought it was worth the risk. Uh, and you know, sometimes with these risks, they don’t work out. And unfortunately, this this clearly looks like it is not going to work out for the Sharks. And they would be better to just move on and and embrace the future and play Sam Dickinson more because uh Dickinson, he looked good tonight. And like you need to continue to play guys like Moo Modulan and Dickinson over Clingberg who gives you right now is giving you nothing. So uh we’re going to kind of just go through some musings of this game. We’re going to talk about Sam Dickinson who I thought had a a good night tonight. We’ll just kind of bounce around some some thoughts as again the Sharks lose 7 to one to a very good Washington Capitals team. Uh, so we’ll get to that here in just one second. So, um the defense was I mean everybody’s to blame like it’s it’s not just John Clingberg and like the defense was a mess tonight, right? just too many guys who lost coverage on rotations just and again it goes back to well you’re playing with a new guy every night and we had a new pairing tonight with Dickinson Iorio with Muka Mullan um you know sent up to the press box but um the one silver lining from the defense saying I I thought that was Sam Dickinson’s play and especially uh in a game like this where you’re losing five nothing six nothing eventually seven nothing. Um, you can let guys like Sam Dickinson just just go go play like go play like it doesn’t matter, right? And you saw especially in the second period where Sam Dickinson started getting more ice time and Dickinson played really well. And again, I know it’s garbage time. Uh, whatever. Like the these are kind going back to like the the 23 24 season, 245 season, right? you’re trying to pull these little nuggets out of out of out of the garbage that was this game. But Dickinson played really and you saw him be more assertive and especially right carrying the puck, taking the puck into the neut, you know, into the offensive zone. You saw him jump into the play more often and and do things that you saw him be very successful at with London. And it just looked like he was playing for free, right? knowing like I’m getting more ice time tonight. Um, we’re already losing six to nothing. It doesn’t matter if I make a mistake, right? What’s seven to nothing or like it doesn’t matter. Let’s just go out there and see if I can have some fun and create some stuff. And you saw him do that tonight. Um, and you know, Dickson tonight ended up playing602, which you would have actually liked to see more of, uh, tonight, but they did a pretty good job of kind of of of splitting up the ice time between the defenseman. But, um, I do think though like this was a a one of Dickinson’s better games, um, from him. And these are these are the things you need to embrace more, right? Like if Dickinson makes a mistake, he’s a 19-year-old rookie is expected to make these mistakes, okay? And like I mentioned earlier, right, he fumbled the puck at the blue line. And again, every defenseman is going to fumble the puck at the blue line. No defenseman is perfect there, right? But we’re we’re seeing a growing mount of evidence that anytime any pressure on Clingberg at the blue line, what does he do right with Dickinson? Yes, he fumbled it, but he was still able to get back and and do something, right? Ligrin, I think it was Ligrin. Uh, it was Lig, one of the other defenseman that he was playing with has a bit of an issue. Dickinson gets back. He does a great job of of breaking up a potential uh, you know, breakaway because of his speed and his hustle and that reach of his. Um, I again, I know it was garbage time. wasn’t a perfect game, but it was just nice to see Dickinson kind of get off the leash a little bit and go do Sam Dickinson things. So, um, one of my other takeaways from from tonight’s game was it was despite the score again, you lost 7 to1, this game was much closer than you would expect. Like shot attempts were in favor of the Sharks at 38 to 37. And again, I know, right? the the the Caps got up four nothing uh 5 nothing early in you know second period right and they were able to kind of just park the bus um but even in the first period when you’re down 3 nothing 4 nothing 16 to 15 shot attempts in favor of the Sharks uh at five on five eight uh uh actual shots was 10 to four so the Caps did a really good job of of making theirs count compared to the Sharks um but like seven to eight to seven scoring chances in favor of the Sharks. Four to three high danger chances. Like this was a much closer game and it was very much a everything that could go wrong for San Jose went wrong for San Jose, right? And you Colin Graph makes a wonderful pass to Barkley Goodro who hits the post and then uh gets stopped, right? And then you you just see they make a great play like that and then what do the Caps do? The Caps take it down the other way and they score. And we just saw that all night tonight where anytime the Sharks mounted anything or got any sort of chance, uh, the Caps were able to bury their chances tonight. And that I think that was my kind of other big takeaway from this game was um there’s a very real possibility where there’s like a four to three game where the Sharks kind of, you know, they score early, they kind of get, you know, keep up with with the Caps and then we’re talking about really competitive game. And um you know it’s it’s the funny thing, right? We’re feeling great. The Sharks, you know, beat down the Mammoth six to three. Um you know, they get all the puck luck and then tonight they just get no puck luck. Like just nothing’s going in um until the very end where uh Chris Paul hits a big three to cut it to 42. But just a Yeah, like this game like if you played this game 10 times, I think they’re like this was the one like blowout seven to one. I think most the other ones probably the Caps win because the Caps are a really good team and especially at five on five are a really good team but there’s a really realist like I think there a lot of the games are just much closer right where it’s four to three or five to three type of scenario and we’re talking about man the Sharks kind of hung in there with this a really good Caps team u but tonight I think it just went poorly for them so um but overall like it’s I think it’s again like these blowout losses I think are easier to just kind flush and but the problem is now you’re going on a road trip and you start that road trip playing Dallas who behind ABS might be the second best team in the NHL right now. So, um it’s going to be fun. I I think Friday’s game is going to be a really nice like how do we bounce back from this game? And I I expect C we’ve seen it right every time the Sharks lose Cabrini that next game has a big game. I think Ascarov who that just had no help tonight um locked in like I think the Sharks are going to play the Stars very competitively. Uh but it’s just this stretch here right where you’re playing some some really good teams here. Uh and I think that’s again why that Utah game was really important for them to try to get some points. But um other than that though, yeah, I mean just just throw this game away. uh take take out the Sam Dickinson was was was good tonight uh moments from it and just throw away the rest of this game. So uh we’ll be back tomorrow. Make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. 1. Everyone already accepted this season as a lost season before it even began. I personally never did and still think they will sneak into the WC2 spot. That being said, this team needs to get rid of these washed up vets, accept them as losses, and throw these young guys into the NHL. They need to develope. They need to get chemistry together. They need to play together as a team with the long term players, not these has beens and 4th liners.

  2. You were the first I heard to float the idea of a conditioning stint and possible move to the WJC for Misa. I thought and still do that this would be the best move for the Sharks and Misa.

I will always think that the NCAA was the better path for Misa's development as it has been his physical maturity that has held him back the most. Whether he is smart enough or can keep the pace of the NHL (and I still have questions about that), Misa is just not physically ready.

He is 18 and looks it on the ice where he gets muscled way too much. But I am sure GMMG allowed him to make that choice and that is the reality of it now.

The OHL is a no go for me (like everyone else) and the path moving foward you laid out makes the most sense. I think as he matures physically he will get better but that is something that cannot be rushed. If Misa takes the Eklund/Smith path of working his but off all season and hits it in the offseason like Graf has, next season we may see him start to move towards his potential.

With how he has looked this season, I believe it is incumbent upon GMMG and the Sharks to resign or extend Wennberg to allow Misa to grow into his role as 2C. Which, in my eyes will not be this season, but most likely next season.

  3. GM's arent going to waive an a NHL defense core because they made a mistake, players and agents always take note on a general managers behavior. Grier being a former player can probably elaborate more on this topic. It sucks that he's stuck with Klingberg, Leddy and to the lesser extent Iorio, it was a buy low risk move on Klingberg and Leddy. The young guys will get their time, Grier and the Sharks have a plan and its working well so far.

  4. 1st question. Klingberg; would you say he's more like Nicolas Lindstrom or Ray Bourque?

2nd question. Klingberg; Great defenseman? or Greatest defensemen?
