This is GENUINELY Insane… HUGE Rockets Move Incoming | Houston Rockets News
This is genuinely insane as a huge Rockets move is incoming with the latest news across the NBA. We talk about a point guard who’s at the end of his career that could help out the Rockets in one form or facet. We talk about it here today on Rockets Digest. Welcome in everybody. I’m Jay Andrews and I appreciate you hanging out with me and tuning in to today’s show. Man, this is a good one. We want to talk about it a little bit, but let’s break down kind of the story up until now. So, we all know Chris Paul CP3. He actually is in a very tough spot right now. It was going to be the end of his career in LA. He wanted to retire a Clipper. That was going to be the way it was. And while the Clippers stunk, at least Chris Paul could have a good end to his career. That was until about a couple of days ago when this came out. The Clippers are parting ways with Chris Paul. The team announced the team will work with him on the next step of his career. In terms of Chris Paul, he wants to keep playing. And I know that because of what he put on his Instagram story before any news was released. There was not an official report out. There was not anything to say that Chris Ball had been let go, released, whatever you want to call it, from the Los Angeles Clippers. And he put out an Instagram story saying, “Guess I just got told that I need to go home, or guess I just got sent home.” Something of that nature. And so with that being said, I think the frustration is there with Chris Paul knowing that the Clippers stink. They’re not good. And yet their worry is getting Chris Paul off their roster when he was just playing like 10 minutes per game. So the question could be stated, he’s a veteran. He’s a very good veteran and a point guard. Could the Rockets be in the market to sign him? That’s what I want to break down with you today and kind of discuss the goods and bads of all this. And the first thing we have to discuss is Chris Paul and his long tenur veteran history that has brought him through multiple teams, but one of those teams was the Houston Rockets. And CP3 has always said that he wants to retire in one of the teams that he uh played with. And while the Rockets were not a staple of his career, he’s not going to retire and be remembered for his Rockets tenure, it was a part of his career. And it’s something that well sparked articles like this quoting that should the Rockets sign Chris Paul now that he is a free agent. And a lot of times I always go through these shows and I talk about why he should be signed or maybe why not he should be signed. But I want to do something different here. I want to ask you before I get into anything, your opinion on this because I think you have a valid opinion. Should the Rockets sign Chris Paul, a point guard, a position that was a big question mark for the Rockets at the start of the season? Should they go out and get CP3? If you think yes, then I want you to type S for sign. If you’re going to pass up the on this opportunity, if you don’t think the Rockets need Chris Paul slash you don’t want him, then I want you to type P for pass. Let me know in the comments section. Should the Rockets sign Chris Paul? S for sign, P for pass. I’m gonna save my opinion for a little bit of my news and notes to get into, but let’s start talking about Chris Paul and um the journey that he has been on and I think that starts with why he was released with LA and in theory what the Rockets could do with him. So, it’s been a miserable season for the LA Clippers and we know that. Derek Parker of Derek Parker, excuse me, of Rockets SI saying, quote, “The miserable early season seems to have culminated with Paul being cut.” And here’s where the Rockets come in. And with the Rockets losing their star point guard Fred Van Vleet due to injury prior to the season, it begs the question, should Houston sign CP3? End quote. Let’s take a look at the Houston Rockets guard situation as we stand right now because we know there was a lot of pressure put on names like Reed Shepard and Josh Kogi and Aaron Holiday and to some extent guys who are two-way contracts like JD Davidson or having KD come up and play as shooting guard position. As we stand right now, I feel very comfortable with our two starters, which it doesn’t get labeled right here on the depth chart. But in my head, and I think in every Rockets’s head’s fan, every Rockets fan’s head, the starting point guard is Almond Thompson. The starting shooting guard is Reed Shepard, but the starting two guards are Reed Shepard and Aman Thompson. That is not a question. So, the question becomes, is Chris Paul better than them? No. But can he provide a depth factor to this team better than Aaron Holiday or Josh Kogi? I want to say partially yes, just because of his veteran um status. And we go and look at kind of the stat sheet here. Reed Shepard is one that we expect to be on this roster and he’s very good. Past that though, Aaron Holidayiday 8.3, Josh Kogi 6.5. We know that the stat lines are there for guys like Aman Thompson who are averaging now 17.2 two points per game and playing closer to 40 minutes per game than last season when he was playing 14 minutes per game. His field goal percentage is, you know, pretty good. His three-point percentage less than be less than to be desired as a point as a guard. But at the same time, when you’re averaging 7.3 rebounds and you’re 67, I think I’m fine with this and I’m in a very good position. Same can be said for guys like Reed Shepard who is averaging 13.2 points per game and 24 25.3 minutes per game. Reed Shepard has actually been a very bright spot of the Houston Rockets this season and for how much Raphael Stone and Emoa talked this off seasonason as I said about their expectations for Reed Shepard and their want for him to be as good as he possibly can be. Well, he he’s done exactly that. For Aaron Holiday though, he’s got 83 8.3 points. He’s come on at a good time. But the concerning factor that I have is Josh Oi. He was in a very very good spot to start the season. In fact, I would argue that he would probably deserve a starting spot for a majority of the first couple games, but as of late, it just has not been going his way. And so, again, it goes back to Chris Paul of is he worth the spot to bring him in and take minutes away from Okogi or Holiday or I mean, in a lot of ways, you could probably bring him on and not have to worry about your roster culmination. So, let’s look at CP3. Let’s kind of discuss that. Now, we know his history has been long tenured. He has been from New Orleans to the Clippers to the Rockets to the Thunder to Phoenix, Golden State, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and throughout those times in his careers, he’d been a certified baller. In fact, most of his seasons from his rookie year until the past three, he has averaged 10 points per game or more. The problem is the last three and specifically why he got released this season, his average points per game in this year. He is 40 years old and he is averaging almost or not even I should say three points per game. With the field goal percentage as low as it is, with the three-point percentage as low as it is, do we actually think that Chris Paul is going to come onto the Houston Rockets and serve a more versatile or useful role than the likes of Aaron Holiday or Josh Oi or um to that matter if he’s going to take minutes from Aman Thompson or Reed Shepard. As much as I want to say yes and I want to say that CP3 would come back and help and he’d be a veteran guy, it’s not the case. It’s not the only thing at this point that CP3 could effectively give the Rockets by adding him to the roster over other people and giving him minutes over other people is specifically his ability to be in the NBA. His ability that he has been in the NBA for 20 years. That’s all you’re bringing at this point. You’re not putting up points. You’re not helping the team win on the court. You could help them off the court, but the question again becomes, how bad was the breakup with the LA Clippers slash, do the Rockets even want to bring him in for just a players coach? Cuz they kind of already have that in Fred Van Vleet. Yes, he’s younger, but he is not costing you a roster spot right now. I don’t think they should sign Chris Paul. I think it would be a fantastic story. And if he could come back here and play well, man, would that make me happy, but the odds of that happening, slim to none, and none is winning that race. So again, I asked the question that I asked at the beginning of the show. Do you think the Rockets should sign Chris Paul? S for sign, P for pass. I think it for me, it’s a P for pass.
