Kansas City Chiefs vs. Houston Texans NFL Week 14 Preview, Prediction, & Analysis
[Music] Welcome into another Chat Sports joint preview, not only here at Texans today, but also with my guy Jackson Durham over at the Chiefs Report. Today we’re going to be going over the major injuries, everything you need to know around the Texans and the Chiefs Sunday Night Football matchup. Durham, before we get going, we gotta ask the folks to predict the score at home. Absolutely. Absolutely. Let us know in the comments what you guys think the final score of Sunday Night Football is going to be. I’ll go first and then I’ll let you get one in. Chugs, I know you’re not going to like this. I think we get you guys 28-21 in this. I think it’s a close game. I think it’s a good game, but I think Kansas City comes out in one they got to have. Ah, that’s good. Good call. uh Jackson, but that is wrong. Of course, the Texans are going to win this game 27- 24. It’s going to be a close one. I agree with you on that, Jackson, but I think the Texans are going to pull out this victory and possibly end the Chiefs playoffs hopes this year. Kind of suspected you would be going in the Texans direction, but at least we’re in the same ballpark on score-wise. So, you know, thinking the same way on that. Let’s let’s get into the injury news, though. What’s going on for the Texans? Or do you want to start with the Chiefs? Uh, we can start with the Texans. So, early on Thursday morning, the Texans got a big blow to their defensive line, which is probably good news for the Chiefs with all the injuries that they have. Defensive tackle Tim Settle underwent foot surgery, will miss the remainder of the season. So, obviously that is a blow to this Texans defensive tackle room. The best part of this defensive line is the edge group. Obviously, Will Anderson Jr., Denil Hunter, Will Anderson Jr. also dealing with, you know, some minor injuries. He should be good to go on Sunday Night Football. The other big injury that we all got to watch out for, and you know it, we’re filming this Thursday night, and we might have more clarification by the time you’re watching this video, but Kamari Lacader, starting quarterback for the Houston Texans, he hasn’t practiced so far up until Thursday with a foot injury. And that will be a big big loss if he’s not able to go up against this Chiefs squad. Obviously Patrick Mahomes, one of the best to ever do it. And if the Texans are without their second best cornerback in Kamari Lacier, they’re already very thin at the secondary positions. Right. The safety Jaylen Reed, who was starting last week, he’s more than likely out this week. He broke a metal plate in his forearm up against the Colts in week 13. But the secondary, the defense, the very, you know, vaunted defense of the Houston Texans has some holes maybe going into Sunday Night Football that maybe the Chiefs can take advantage of. I sure hope so. I think we would be better positioned to do so if we did not have so many injuries of our own. Getting into Kansas City’s injury report, the number one most notable one, and I know a lot of the Chiefs fans listening to this are already aware of this. Josh Simmons hit the injured reserve this week with the fractured wrist he suffered last week against the Dallas Cowboys. Enormous loss. That is your starting left tackle out in this game. Absolutely. And on the other side of the line, it is pretty likely we’re going to be missing Jawan Taylor as well. So, both of the starting tackles, he’s out with a tricep injury or at least doubtful with a tricep injury. And then if it couldn’t get any worse, it absolutely still can. Trey Smith will almost certainly miss this game with a high and low ankle sprain. So, three of your five starters along the offensive line are out of this one, or at least doubtful for this one. And that just doesn’t bode well. Even though the Texans do have some defensive line injuries, as Chugs just discussed, they’re still one of the best defensive lines in the entire NFL, one of the best front seven groups in the entire NFL. And the Texans have or the Chiefs, excuse me, have struggled to protect Patrick Mahomes even when they have been 100% healthy. So coming into a matchup like this with those kind of injuries is absolutely not what you want to have. On the positive end of the injury spectrum though for Kansas City, Christian Roland Wallace and Brian Cook do seem to be trending back towards playing. Roland Wallace a little bit more up in the air. But Brian Cook is off the injury report officially despite suffering that ankle roll last week. So it’s a little bit of good news, but mostly it’s bad news in the Chiefs injury department as three offensive line starters likely to miss this game. Yeah. not what you want to see if you’re Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes with this offensive line, especially with this Texans defensive line. Coming up in just a moment, me and Jackson are going to give our top storyline, our top story that we’re looking at for each of our teams going into Sunday Night Football. But before we do that, me and Durham, we both love ourselves some prize picks, and I know you will, too. Today’s episode is brought to you by Prize Picks. It’s the holiday season, the best time of the year for sports, bowl games, basketball matchups, playoff pushes, and it’s all happening at once. And while you and I, me and Durham are out here making decisions every day what gifts to buy, what to eat, which games to watch, there’s one place where it feels good to be right. That’s over at Prize Picks. New feature alert. Prize Pix now has early payouts. If your lineup gets off to a hot start, you may now have the option to cash out those winnings before the game even finishes. And if you’re wondering, hey, what does the lineup even look like, Jeremy? Well, this is the lineup that I’m rolling with for Sunday night. I’m using another new feature called the stacks feature. You can use the same player, multiple projections. That’s what I’m doing with Jaden Higgins. I’m going the more on his receiving yards. I’m also going the more on his rushing/receiving touchdowns at 0.5. I’m going the less on Patrick Mahomes passing yards, which getting uh you know the shaking of the head from my guy Durham over here. And then I’m going Will Anderson Jr. with all the injuries that the Chiefs have, I think he’ll get at least one sack. Right. Right. If you want to use my lineup or if you’re a Chiefs fan out there, go ahead and make your own. Prize Picks, it’s good to be right. And speaking of being right, um, you know, actually, I’ll go second. I’ll let I’ll let the wrong go first. So, I’ll let Durham tell you what his top story line, how he thinks the Chiefs can possibly beat the Houston Texans and save what little hope they have left in this season over there in Kansas City. Take it away, Tom. Man, I thought you were being nice to me for a minute there. Absolutely not, though. Okay, number one thing for Kansas City, and it circles back to what we just talked about in the injury report section. Can you protect Patrick Mahomes? Can you stay or keep him upright in this game? Because like we talked about, this is a Texans defensive line that is top 10 in pretty much every pass rushing statistic. And Will Anderson Jr.’s dealing with injuries, but he’s still going to be out there. He’s still going to be getting after you. When you think about what the Chief’s offensive line is likely to look like this week, it’s not going to be pretty, guys. And this depth chart, we’d actually have to flip it, but Wana Morris is actually going to for the first time start at right tackle. And Jaylen Moore is going to be starting at left tackle. Andy Reid announced that this week, and it’s a change that I’m honestly just not down with. It’s a change that I think is a little bit bizarre for Kansas City this year. After we’ve spent most of this season with Moore playing left tackle, I don’t understand why you would want to flip it around just because he was solid in that role. I feel very uncomfortable with Patrick Mahomes going out in front of a very unestablished offensive line, a combination we’ve literally never seen before. And the closest we have seen to it this season was against the Buffalo Bills. And I went back and watched that tape this week and on just nine passing snaps, Patrick Mahomes was pressured on six of them. Four of those are on WA Morris. He just gets absolutely blown up on almost every ref. So, I really think Wana Morris can win or lose you this game at the end of the day. Can he hold his water against this Texans pass rush? That’s what it’s going to come down to. Yeah. And I I really do think the battle in the trenches is going to be a huge matchup that we need to watch in this game. But for the Houston Texans, my biggest key for them is staying on the field on offense. The best way to get Patrick Mahomes and to get after him really and to, you know, neutralize the maybe best quarterback of all time in the NFL is to make sure he’s not on the field, make sure he’s on the sidelines. So if the Texans CJ Strad and his second start after missing multiple weeks due to a concussion, if they can stay on the field, they don’t need three and outs. And even if it doesn’t end in a score, even if it ends up with them, you know, knocking the Chiefs back or punting it inside the Chiefs 20 yardd line, pinning them deep, that’s good for this Texans team because if they can keep Patrick Mahomes on the sideline, make sure he doesn’t get those short fields, control the time of possession, play old school possession football, I think that plays right into the hands of this Houston Texans team because the defense, you know, it’s going to be rocking. They are currently number one in the NFL in terms of points allowed per game and it doesn’t look like they’re stopping anytime soon. Will Anderson Jr. Janal Hunter, you know, they’re going to pin their ears back. They’re going to be ready to get after Patrick Mahomes. If the offense can do its part, make sure the defense has time to rest, be able to be fresh on the sidelines, that will play big for this Texans team to go into Arrowhead and win for the first time up against the Chiefs since 2019. They have been the Achilles heel for this Texans team. They have not been able to get past Patrick Mahomes. And I mean, you go all the way back to that, you know, playoff game where the Texans were up 24 to zero. And may maybe uh maybe we need to, I don’t know, sacrifice a goat, do something to get rid of the Patrick Mahomes curse over this Texans squad. But I hope it ends this Sunday night when the Texans go into Arrowhead week 14 and hopefully take down the Kansas City Chiefs. I just cannot agree. I absolutely hope it does not. But I really do agree with your take there that time of possession is going to be important in this game, making the Chiefs come up empty because that’s been an issue for us all season long. Empty red zone possessions, especially in the last few games. They had a 1 for3 outing uh back against the Dallas Cowboys and then they were 1 for six against the Denver Broncos in the red zone. So definitely something that the Chiefs are susceptible to falling uh victim to empty possessions on the opponent’s 50. Yeah. and Durham. This is an absolutely must-win game for Kansas City if they hope to keep their playoff odds alive. A loss in NFL Week 14 would drop them to 6-7 on the 2025 NFL season and effectively end the Chiefs playoff path, however a win would keep Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce in the hunt for the 2025 NFL playoffs.
