BREAKING: Jays make SHOCKING move… This is INSANE | Toronto Blue Jays News
We have some breaking news. The Toronto Blue Jays had just made a shocking move. And in what has been already a wild off season, Ross Atkins continues to make moves, but this time getting rid of a pitcher that had a huge impact on the Jays last year. We’re going to break down exactly who this is and discuss what it means going forward as this means that not only more moves are coming, but things have just taken a very interesting twist in an already crazy off seasonason. We’re break all that down as well as the latest free agency updates and news, folks. But before we get into it all, you guys have been an absolute beast of the support. So if you’re a part of the percentage who aren’t subscribed to the channel, make sure to hit that subscribe button, folks. This came out of nowhere. Now, we’ve been talking about Boba Shett. We’ve been talking about Kyle Tucker, all these different things. Then out of nowhere, the Toronto Blue Jays DFA right-handed pitcher Yariel Rodriguez per sources, he posted a 1.4 W out of the bullpen last year, 73 innings as one of the more used bullpen arms and a 3.08 08 RA. Folks, this came genuinely out of nowhere and everyone’s pretty shocked in general with this move because this is a guy that when they signed him and keep in mind he has, you know, some money left on his deal here. When they signed him, he was supposed to be a very intriguing, not prospect, but MOB pitcher. Started off as a starter. We saw him last year and the year before be a starter. Didn’t really work out, you know, starting. But this is uh very interesting now. I mean, people are not floored, but they’re very surprised. You have a ton of Jay’s writers, a ton of Jay’s fans, everyone going, “How on earth did this happen?” Yudia, yes, he hasn’t been, you know, he wasn’t good the second half of the year last year, but he was one of their and for a while their best reliever out of the bullpen. If we think back to, you know, some some time ago there at the start of the season, or I guess not really at the start of the season, but kind of midway through the year, he had a really good stretch and he was dominant for weeks there. He finished last year with a 3.08. 08 erra which is uh very very interesting. Now by dfaing him it means they’re not getting a return back for him. He is now gone. Abendic Smith just tweeted like 10 seconds ago. I’ll read it out for you. Says we can deduce a few things from this Yariel Rodriguez move. 29 teams passed on claiming Rodriguez, which means of course he’s owed $17 million over the next three years by the way. So no team claimed him because of course that money is a lot and the Jays are okay with him leaving. And now clearly the Jays prefer to have Rodriguez off of the 40man which frees up valuable space for someone else. But I’m going to dive into all that in a minute. I am I mean is floored the word? I don’t know what the word is but this is extremely surprising. You look at his stats even his rookie year as MLB pitcher. He went 1 and8 with a 4.47 RA and started 21 games. And then of course it didn’t really work out this year him for a starter. He only started one though there were some games where he came in after an opener. But you look at as like Savant, it’s not great, but it also isn’t that bad either. And I just didn’t expect them at this point to get rid of a guy like Yario Rodriguez, who I thought they fairly, you know, they coveted fairly highly. Had a very good overall year last year, even though they didn’t want to use him in the playoffs. Really, they didn’t trust him, you know, towards the end of the year. But clearly, they have someone else in mind and obviously more moves are coming at this point. But as it stands right now, it is uh it is shocking and it’s very rare where Ross Atkins or any team really makes a move that kind of catches the fan base this off guard. Now, if you look into it, you know, really really deeply. You can kind of see why they’re doing it. Clearly have somebody else, whether that be within the organization and their prospect pool or most likely a free agent, you know, on the horizon here. And we know we know that, you know, people are now starting to talk about what reliever are we signing today. But also, the more you dive into Yariel Rodriguez, you can see he has some really bad platoon splits. And clearly, they don’t think he’s way better against righties than he was lefties. They don’t think that he will be of value for the Jays. I mean, obviously not, right? If they thought he was going to be of value, they wouldn’t get rid of him for nothing. Owed $17 million over the next three years. He is not a guy who was a, you know, was about to end his contract on an expiring deal. He is now gone. So there’s no more Yuriel talk which opens up things for a very interesting uh turn here. You can see the relief pitchers. He was according to fan graphs kind of down there in that sixth reliever spot projected to get 11% of the uh you know of the run. But I am just for a guy who pitched as much as he did last year just to let him go. I like I mean I like it in the sense of clearly they have something in mind to upgrade and I’m hoping it is a guy like you know like we’ve been talking about Edwin Diaz someone like that because yesterday a report from John Morosei came out saying which teams are in the mix to sign a late inning free agent reliever he mentioned the Blue Jays the Tigers the Phillies the Cubs and the Angels and we know they’ve been heavily involved in the Edwin Diaz sweep stakes he’s still yet to sign there’s rumblings that he’s going to sign over the next few days potentially even before the winter meetings which quite the uh you know I’m hoping that he kind of gets uh signed here soon but for the Jays like I mean obviously if you could convert Yuriel to one of the best pitchers in the game you do it but does this signify now that they are going bigger than we thought in the reliever department as well because in order to get rid of a guy who had a 3.08 O8 RA and yes again he had ups and downs all these different things. They clearly have somebody in mind who they believe can be a bit a bigger impact pitcher next year. Yeriel was great against righties, horrible against lefties. What do they have in mind here? Do they have you know some other things? I mean Ross must be cooking, right? And that’s why everyone is talking about what reliever are we signing today? What’s next? All these different things. And Ben Smith is reporting that he remains in the Blue Jays organization as of now. Meaning that he’s probably going to, you know, leave. He was not going to be on the Blue Jays big league squad, but bearing a change would arrive at spring training and attempt to earn a job like any non-roster player and they can select his contract onto the 40man again. So, he’s gone from the big league team at least for now, but they can technically, you know, bring him into spring training as a non-roster invitee, which I highly doubt they’re he he’s gonna find, right? He’s gonna find a um you know, spot elsewhere. I think I I can’t imagine he’s going to actually get a shot in like surely some other team would like a guy who put up a point or 3.0 ADRA and he’s off of but one thing is confirmed for now they’re outrighting him. He is off their 40man roster. So he’s gone from that just surprising things are coming out as we you know as we’re recording here always keeping you guys up to date but one of the more shocking moves um I I’ve seen especially this offseason but even my time covering the channel shocking because you just don’t really see that happening. Now again, as it pertains to their next move, everyone is wondering what this means for their next uh, you know, free agent. Now, does it mean Edwin Diaz? That’s obviously wishful thinking. He of course makes a lot or will be making over a hundred million. It could be a guy like Pete Fairbanks or, you know, Suarez, a couple guys who are going to make a little bit less than Edwin Diaz, but are still making a ton of money. I’m not going to put all my eggs in the Edwin Diaz basket here. I don’t think, you know, because they’re outright Ariel, it means that they’re getting Edwin Diaz back. I don’t think it’s one for one like that. But in the same vein here, something bigger has to be brewing because you just got rid of someone who logged 73 innings for you last year. That is not a small feat, right? 73 innings, which means they’re now going to have to, I mean, at this point fill that up in a numerous, you numerous ways. And most importantly here, they have to replace it. They have to. And you don’t really have a deep bullpen. You have Hoffman, you have Garcia, you have Verlin and Fischer. everyone else. Like Florida, you can assume he’s going to get in there as a lefty, but like your bullpen’s not insanely deep. You need to make multiple moves here. Will it be via a trade? Will it be via free agency? They now have one more hole. And you could kind of prior to this pencil in a guy like Yariel, someone who can at least eat innings, be maybe a long man out of the bullpen, or you know, factor into a fifth, sixth inning guy. If you get a guy like Evan Diaz, not anymore. He’s going to have to work his way back from the team if he wants to get there. But I suspect another team will try to sign him to a major league contract soon. But let me know down below what your thoughts are. Very shocking. See you later.

His leg hanging delivery bought him a one way ticket out of town , it was bush league stuff that caused him to pitch poorly.
Not shocking for a top spending team. There will always be bad contracts.
free up space for Bassitt and mad max for the bullpen or sign Diaz and the tampa closer
its odd because why not package him and eat some salary. Because they didn't i assume we'll see him in spring training.
So is he guaranteed that three years of money?Even if he gets picked up by another team, are we still responsible for that contract?
Started 21 games in 2024 and won 1. Yes, starter wins arent as big of a deal as they once were but that doesn't look good
5 years and 32mil contract was a mistake especially considering Rodriquez had no previous MLB experience……..
100% This move is to sign Tatsuya Imai! We are loading up on starting pitching depth that can pitch in relief as well (Ponce) for better versatility and value.
Alternatively, they should sign Fairbanks for his excellent walk rate and home run rate.
Im shocked and appalled. Holy Moses. That's why dont get excited about the Kbo Guy. Tempered expectations
Every time the Jays put an averageish pitcher against Dodgers they got lit up. we need Elite everywhere in the bullpen
Yariel is another reliever who simply does not bounce back without rest. At 98, he was filthy. At 92, he was batting practice.
So why don't they DFA Little? Still mad… lol
he basically filled in the spot created by manoah crapping the bed so i guess they don't need yariel anymore since manoah got the boot
My only question is why Y-Rod ? We have so many relief pitchers that aren't as good as him, and if we dont plan on getting anything in return, just let go of one of them.
Yariel is solid in the regular season and this might hurt the bullpen depth ngl
Atkins is a moron most of his moves are dumb. Him and Schneider should of been fired after the Berrios move in playoffs few years back
This offseason has been a 10-part docuseries and we’re still in early December.
Dodgers will pick him up and make him great. Thanks Toronto 😅😅😅again.
I didn't c this coming
We needed roster spots, hes garbage, nobody wanted him. Simple as that lol. Doesnt mean anything. Still optomistic but this move means nothing…
Understandable but . Little should be the 1st 1 gone before Rodriguez. Little sucks!!!
Fairbanks isn’t the pitcher we need we need a fire baller as our closer
What about little. Lol
yariel is not a big deal, he walked too many batters for a reliever. you can have that in playoffs or in regular season, it costs you losses.
This is a surprise move. He pitched 73 innings in the 2025 regular season and all of the sudden he’s released.
Brandon Little and Nance next. Or don't put them on the roster!! Also, Yanks, not looking to add him, may purposely drive Diaz price up for the Mets, and price Jays out too.
Watch Cashman step in looking for a deal.
Get rid of Little next
He was unhappy being in the bullpen. Always considered himself a starter. I'm sure he thought he'd get the opportunity again after bassitt and a
Scherzers contract expiring and that obviously wasn't the case. So maybe he made his unhappiness known to management and wanted out 🤷
Yes, but he walks way too many batters and look at his stats in the playoffs. He has an ERA over 10. Too many walks gave up too many runs and that’s why he’s gone.
So from what I heard, he is still a part of the Blue Jays organization. He has been placed on the Blue Jays AA reserve list. This way it opens up another spot on the 49 roster and it moves his contract to the minor leagues where it will not affect the Blue Jays. And I’m pretty sure this also means that come spring training. He could still show up with the Blue Jays facility and try to compete for a spot again.
B. S. Quit making excuses for him. I watched him pitch during the playoffs and his one problem was he'd could throw strikes and the strike outs he got were from over anxious hitters, not because of good pitching. I believe that was a smart move, it's just to bad they wasted so much money on him to begin with. The End.
Making room for Fairbanks ? … Y-rod mostly just a flop signing, but now free agents are clamouring to come to Toronto.
Wow, what the hell, I don’t understand this move, is the front office drunk
Trade him while he has still has some value. He’s inconsistent.
If we dont get Edwin Diaz, Robert Suarez or Pete Fairbanks, this shit makes no sense.
Because when he’s off, he’s way off and he can’t find the strike zone
WE JUST SIGNED OKAMOTO
It's a bit surprising, but what this tells me is the Jays are making room on the 26-man roster ahead of making a significant acquisition. Whether via free agency or trade.
The Jays now have 7 days to either trade Rodríguez or put him on outright release waivers. However, if he is traded, or if a team claims him, that team assumes his contract.
But what this tells me is that the Jays likely have something in the works and are ready to make a big move sometime very soon. It could be for a closer or another top reliever, or this move could have even been done to make another big acquisition to the roster. There could be a trade incoming, or this could just be "spring cleaning" before the winter meetings begin. Who knows what to expect, but to me, this signifies a significant move coming.
He was literally one of our worst relievers
you're shocked, cmon man , he was manoah 2.0.
Who writes your gossip for you?
Meh, i was never really impressed with Rodriguez anyways. He was good when he first came on but once the league figured him out, he wasn't fooling anybody.
This is just a temporary move to protect another person on the 40 man roster . He will be invited back in spring training to see whether he can make the team. Yariel is still apart of the organization and owed money.
I always thought he'd be a trade chip. Kinda didn't fit a starter role in 2024 (after knocking out James McCann -Us againist the O's) Did ok as reliver in 2025, not suprised tbh
He wasn't as bad as Little, but when Rodguriez came into the game, I rolled my eyes and said "OHHH NO!!"- Mr. Inconsistently! This will get interesting. Good luck Yariel
Sign Diaz, DFA Little and resign Bo, Tucker. Go Jays Go
I expected this to happen a while ago, he doesn't seem to want to make changes that could benefit himself, he fell back to his old ways too many times. This could open up another rule 5 draft protection for one of our prospects. Maybe Houston can help Yuriel they did get Yusei into a better form.
This guy wakes up floored on the daily.
He always gave up home runs
YR not good picher. Great move
