Out the Gate: Pitchers Racking up the Most WAR in their first 300 IP since 1985

  1. Thats a cursed list. And honestly why Skenes should consider signing an extension to lock in some money.

  2. Angels always get shit (rightfully so) for having Trout and Ohtani at the same time and doing nothing. But holy shit the Mets had Matt Harvey, Syndergaard and Degrom at the same time.

  3. I loved watching Mark Prior at USC. He was so so smooth. I was certain he was going to have a long successful pro career. 😭😭😭

Some Dodger fans hate Dusty Baker for coaching the Giants, I blame him for Mark. (I know it’s not really his fault but man.)

  4. Matt Harvey was looking like a generational talent there for a little bit before the injuries. Really sucks his career never panned out

  5. Strange how so many are post 2000. And Juan Guzman was sooo nasty when he came up great to see him here

  6. I was wondering where Dwight Gooden was until I saw this was just since 1985.

I don’t know how to lookup fWAR by innings pitched, but in Doc’s 1984 rookie season he recorded 8.3 fWar in 218 IP, then followed it up in 1985 with 8.9 fWar over 276.2 IP.

…oh yeah, also – Gooden didn’t turn 21 until November 16, 1985, at the end of his second MLB season. Dude put up over 17 fWar before he could legally drink (by today’s standards, anyway; the drinking age in New York was raised from 18 to 21 in December of 1985)

  7. Yesavage hasn’t even pitched 20 regular season innings and has WS experience. Anyone wanna predict where he falls on this list in 280ish innings?

  8. Man, Roy Oswalt was damn good. A guy you just hated to have to go against in an important game

  9. > Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard

If only I could create a machine that goes back in time and also prevents injury. Sadly I only have the Time Machine.

  10. One might expect those with the highest WAR to start would also end with high WAR. And yet…

  11. Crazy to think Oswalt never had TJ and has the highest career war here. Too bad his back failed him.

  12. Burnes being on this list shocks me considering how terrible he was before the cutter

  13. doc gooden’s first 2 years produced 17 WAR.

He deserves to be included as a foot note at least, when discussing instant impact for pitchers.

  14. Surely my Mets must have won something with 3 guys on this list who pitched at the same time…

  15. The fact that Ohtani is on this list for just pitching is insane when you add it to his hitting accolades. Like actually insane.
