Mike Tomlin GETS REAL on Lamar Jackson ahead of Baltimore Ravens, Steelers KEY Week 14 matchup

It’s Ravens and Steelers day. The Baltimore Ravens match up against Pittsburgh in week 14. And Mike Tomlin had some interesting things to say about Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Jam-packed episode here on this Sunday. Happy, you know, we’re going to say it’s a purple Sunday. It doesn’t really roll off the tongue like proper Friday, but hey, the Ravens play the Steelers and we got we got to get excited for this, right? So, we’re going to dive into what Mike Tomlin had to say in the first part of the show here about Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. I thought he had some interesting comments. In the second part of the show, we’ll dive into the Ravens offense versus the Steelers defense. And then the final segment, we’ll talk about the Steelers offense versus the Ravens defense. Get some final predictions as well. So, I want to tell everyone today’s episode of Locked on Ravens is brought to you by Failen. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if you bet wins will get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. All right. You know, look, even if the Ravens haven’t played well this season, and obviously they didn’t play well on Thursday night, it’s not like the Steelers have either. So, as I’ve called it all week, it’s like the unstoppable force meets the immovable object, and one of them has one out unless there’s a tie. I’m going tell you right now, we don’t like ties over here on Lockdale Ravens. It messes everything up. We don’t want a tie here. But of course, a tie is better than a loss for the Ravens. Now, Mike Tomlin, he had some interesting things to say. I I caught wind of this and this happened earlier in the week, but I wanted to I didn’t have a chance to talk about it, so I wanted to dive into it here where Mike Tom was asked about, you know, the Ravens and obviously had his availability. When talking about Lamar Jackson, he said, quote, “The ball goes to and through Lamar. His ability to extend and make plays, his ability to run, particularly in situational moments, it is and always has been a challenge. We failed some at that challenge a week ago against Josh Allen. And so for those reasons, we’re really working with an edge in preparation for this one.” And so, obviously, look, both these teams are motivated. They’re coming off a pretty disgusting losses, each of them are. And you know, we’ve kind of had a conversation about Lamar, especially since that Thursday night game against the Bengals. And I keep bringing back that Rashene Ali play. You know, if you’re listening to me every day, you’re probably sick and tired of me describing it because I literally think I’ve done it every single day this week. But on that play, it was the option play and Rashene Ali takes it up the middle. You know, Lamar takes it to the outside. That’s where they go and everybody kind of dives in on Rashin Ali. There was no respect for Lamar Jackson’s legs in that situation in that moment. And I think obviously with his injury situation, we talked about the truth being revealed on Lamar’s injury injury situation on yesterday’s show, we finally got some clarification on that. But, you know, with Lamar being cleared and good to go, now it’s just a matter of like, okay, how healthy is he and and how much of prime Lamar Jackson feels weird because he’s still in his prime, but how much of like 100% healthy Lamar are we going to get in this game? I thought against the Jets, as I’ve said, he looked he looked slower, more beat up in that game. But against the Bengals, I thought we saw him get some of that juice back. So hopefully this mini buy has helped him. But I think with Lamar, teams always have to respect it. But I feel like people with other organizations, other teams, coaches, players are putting less emphasis on it because, you know, we haven’t seen Lamar look as bursty or as speedy as as we’ve seen him obviously when he is feeling himself and Lamar’s talked about having to kind of go through stuff like this the first time and dealing with, you know, stuff during the year like this where clearly it’s it’s impacting and hindering him in some way, shape, or form. But again, we don’t necessarily know what specifically the injuries are, how injured Lamar actually is. We just know he’s popping up on the injury report every week, and every week it’s something new or it goes back to a different injury. So, those are all things that teams are probably looking at and saying, “Okay, is Lamar still a threat?” The answer to that question with his legs, it still is yes. But I think the Ravens have to put Lamar in those situations a little more assuming he is up to that and able to even if it’s not 100% Lamar Jackson do what he can do with his legs even if it’s it’s a little below what he usually can do because you have to put that element in your offense and for a Steelers team that has struggled to stop the run without Derrick Carman who is not going to play in this game. We’ve talked about that. I think again like if you can get Derrick Henry going and then start to throw in some Lamar runs and some misdirection stuff obviously getting Katon going as well in this game the threat of Lamar’s legs is if you don’t utilize that correctly even if it’s just the threat of it it’s one less thing the defense has to worry about. So I mean we’ll talk about that all on today’s show and of course hopefully when we’re talking during and after the game here on lockdown Ravens we’ll be talking about look the Ravens running the ball really well though they ran the ball so well look at that. But I think it obviously starts with, you know, Derrick Henry’s your running back and it starts with him on the ground, but utilizing Katon Mitchell effectively and utilizing Lamar. I’m not asking the Ravens to have Lamar run this football like 15 times. I’m not I’m not asking for that. But I just think utilizing that and using the threat because how how many times have we talked about Ravens taking Derrick Henry off the field on key situations whether it’s near the goal line or two-point conversions and maybe certain shorts and you’re like well isn’t just the threat of Derrick Henry something defenses have to worry about and the gravity Lamar Jackson brings to the table every single play. I mean, we saw against the Steelers even last season where Lamar would run to the outside or he’d go a direction or Derrick Henry would go a direction and the gravity of those two players alone, just their presence on the field force the defense to thin out the box a little bit and have guys follow because of the threat that Lamar or Derrick Henry presents. And seems like the Steelers themselves are emphasizing the ground game. He said, Mike Tomlin said, quote, “That’s where our intentions lie from a defensive perspective.” No disrespect to their passing game certainly they got a lot of capable guys there but we’re talking about a legendary runner of this generation in Derek Henry and as I mentioned Pittsburgh struggling against the run recently no Derrick Harmon in this game so for all the running back controversy that we talked about last week with Cincinnati and game script and game flow and John Harbaugh mentioning that which again I I thought there were opportunities for them to utilize Derek and Keaton a little bit more the early portion of that second quarter. It wasn’t like they were down 50 points at that point. They were up in that game actually. You know, I I I think that when you have that situation, it’s easy to, you know, say, “Okay, here Derek, here’s the ball.” That’s what they needed to do. Sometimes they can outsmart themselves and that is obviously a big detriment to some of what Baltimore has done, not just, you know, this season at times, but over the last handful of years. So the game plan, I think we all understand the simplicity of it, especially early. And if you can get that ground game going, the Steelers going to have to start stack the box. They’re going to have to cheat up towards the run on play action. And once you do that, I think that could be a really big day for the tight ends, right? When you’re able to get that safety or that linebacker to take that extra step up and it’s a play action. As a tight end, you’re already starting your route. you’re already going and while the linebacker is worried about the run, you’re already are maybe breaking to the outside. You’re you’re cutting up the middle of the field and those linebackers have to then recover. It puts them in a negative spot and you’re able to just float that ball over the linebacker’s head into a soft spot in that defense. So, it’s so important to establish that and that that’s the number one key. It kind of goes that we’re going to talk about a little more in the second part of the show because we’ll obviously go Ravens offense versus Steelers defense, but there’s a little more nuance to it overall, but we know the like this rivalry is still one of the best in the league in my opinion. Obviously, I think it has lost a little juice over the years. You know, this is no longer the Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Ben Rothllessberger, Joe Flacco, you know, Troy Palamalu. You can throw a ton of names into that conversation. I think Patrick Queen brought back a little juice last season when he left for Pittsburgh and you know obviously he’s gonna play in this game. We’ll talk about some of the injuries that both teams are dealing with. Mainly Pittsburgh is going to miss a couple of key defensive contributors in this one. But you know this is a game that always has intensity. It can throw out the records with both teams and at this point I guess you really can do that because both teams are 500. So it’s a fresh late here for both teams and Baltimore and Pittsburgh both need this win very very badly. Playoff percentages fluctuate for the winner around 70 75% and around 25 to 30% for the loser. So no shortage of importance in this game and coming up in the second part of the show we will dive into more of the Ravens offense going up against the Steelers defense talking about stats behind it keys players and so much more. Obviously these game day episodes, instant reaction shows when breaking news happens. But our game day coverage, we have so much of it. Obviously the game day shows like we have here, but we also have the locked Ravens watch alongs where we react to every single play live. We have these reaction shows after the games and the locked on Raven squad show. Myself, Sam and Jooku and former range receiver Kajmau. So don’t worry, we’re going to have a lot of content for you over the course of the day here on Locked on Ravens. And we’re going to need it because these Ravens the Steelers games, not not the last two particularly, the Ravens dominated, which is kind of rare for this rivalry, but usually these games get stressful. They get physical. We know it’s going to be physical, but as we talked about in the first part of the show, this Ravens offense needs to establish their ground game. Now, obviously, this all hinges with Lamar Jackson. And to Mike Tomlin’s point, yes, he is correct. The ball does go to and through Lamar Jackson and he wasn’t at his best on Thursday night. We know that this is the worst three-game stretch of Lamar Jackson’s career in my opinion and hasn’t scored a touchdown in three straight games. That’s pretty crazy. You know that you think about it. I do believe that streak gets broken in this game and it’s largely because, you know, I I expect Lamar to bounce back, one, but two, the Steelers defense just isn’t what it used to be. This defense is scrambling. As we mentioned, they’re going to miss a couple of key contributors, Daryl Carman and Kyle Duggar, who’s been playing well for them since coming over on a trade from the New England Patriots. And Chuck Clark is going to be his replacement, it looks like. So, I don’t know how much I believe in Chuck Clark personally at this point. And we’re we’re in 2025 right now. So, I’m not sure Chuck Clark is going to have a great day. Maybe he does. And I hope I didn’t just jinx it. But, you know, I think that my confidence level in Chuck Clark, it’s a lot lower than it is in Kyle Duggar. So Pittsburgh’s defense right now, they’re middling the poor unit. It’s not what Cincinnati’s defense is. I know I know the Ravens made that Cincinnati defense look like that 2000 Ravens defense with all those turnovers they were forcing. We’ll talk about the turnovers over the course of the rest of the show here. But Pittsburgh right now is the 15th best passing offense and the 16th best rushing offense. That factors in Thursday night football obviously as we’re recording this after that game. But even still, it just hasn’t been that vaunted Pittsburgh defense. And the crazy part is like they still have names on that defense, but a lot of them are kind of getting up there in age. TJ Watt leads this team with seven sacks. You have to account for him. Nick Herbig next up at six and a half. Alex Highmith who’s only played in seven games this year. He’s at five and a half. And they have some guys in the interior. Kanu Benton is really good and I really like him actually. But again, it’s like they’ve s they signed a lot of guys this offseason that were just kind of vets. They moved off of Minkov Fitzpatrick for Jaylen Ramsay. I mean they had to get rid of Darius Sllay because he was so bad. He got to get rid of Juan Thornell because he was so bad. They’re missing Deshawn Elliot who’s not playing. He’s been out for a while here. So, I I feel like this is a really key opportunity and I’ll just look I’ll roll over what I said last week against the Bengals to this week is you have an opportunity to get your offense back on track and like we saw with the defense. It can only take one game sometimes to spark you for a month or two and hopefully this can be that game for the Ravens. Now, the Ravens on the offensive side of the ball as we all we got to talk about the Ravens aspect, too. Right now, they’re the 15th best passing offense. So, that’s nice. 15th 15th best pass offense versus 15th best pass defense. That’s cool. But the third best rushing offense even still with some of the games that they have had. But the key for me in this game offensively for Baltimore, and I think we all know it, it’s the red zone offense. The Ravens have been abysmal in the red zone this season. just a 46.5 conversion clip down there, which is horrendous. I mean, they were the top red zone offense in the league last season. It’s been a complete shift and it could it’s a lot of things, honestly. It’s poor execution, it’s poor play calling, it’s poor personnel. Like, everything plays a factor in that. Pittsburgh, that is one of their strengths on defense. Pittsburgh is a top 10 red zone defense. They’re 10th. So, that’s a weakness on a strength. And I think if the Ravens can score touchdowns, and I’ve said this all week as well, the Ravens offensive output, their scoring potential is so much higher than Pittsburgh. If Baltimore just starts scoring touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, it’s going to be very hard for Pittsburgh to keep up with them considering how their offense has looked at times this season. And you know, anything can happen obviously on both sides. You know, the Ravens offense might continue to struggle. The Steelers offense might be great, but I still do believe that the Ravens worst offensive performance could be around like Pittsburgh’s middling to best offensive performance. So, I think that the Ravens almost can like they can sleepwalk themselves into two touchdowns like we saw last week against the Bengals. I know they should have put more points up on the board, but obviously the likely fumble, the Flowers OPI, but those are zero points. I mean, those plays happened. It’s unfortunate. The OPI call was soft in my opinion. Likely fumble was bad, but you know, we can say, oh, they could have had 28 points. Well, they didn’t. They had 14. So, you know, they essentially like my point is they can sleepwalk themselves into 14 points, whereas I think Pittsburgh has to work a lot harder for that. And I think if Baltimore can just play like a sound game, a solid game, obviously five turnovers is not going to help you with that. And that’s what we saw against the Bengals in week 13. But that’s the key for me. Just play a clean game. Don’t let the Steelers, as I’ve said, slop this game up because that’s how they win these games is, you know, they’re not the the prettiest offensive team. You know, they’re not going to, you know, do all this great stuff on that side of the ball. We’ll get to that in the final part of the show, but, you know, it’s their defense has been, okay, we’re going to force a Derrick Henry fumble on what, the second play of the game in that game against Steelers in Acer Stadium last season. And, you know, Chris Boswell, the the Steelers offense couldn’t score touchdowns last season. Chris Boswell just was crazy. and Justin Tucker unfortunately in that game last year was not and that’s why Ravens lost that game. But you can’t let like you’re playing into Pittsburgh’s hands if you do that. They’re going to try to make this a slow grind. It’s almost like that Cleveland game that we saw a couple weeks ago where that game was just a slow grind. It was it was a defensive slugfest. Like that is what Pittsburgh wants. They do not want this offense of Baltimore to get going because I think they understand. I think I understand. And I think we all understand if that Ravens offense does find itself does find its way to get going, it probably going to be a long day for the Steelers. Now, in order for the Ravens offense to find themselves, obviously Esamar Jackson has to play better. And I think it’ll make it a lot easier for him if that offensive line can block effectively. I mentioned the pass rushers for Pittsburgh. I am very worried about this offensive line because what have they shown us to have us give them Oh, yeah. I’m confident. No, I’m not confident. I mean, they haven’t shown us anything. I’m curious to see if the rotation will continue with Emry Jones and Vorhees. Maybe Emry Jones will get the start in this game. We’ll probably get an inclination of that as warm-ups commence and you know may we’ll get we’ll get word of that probably closer to the game and obviously I wouldn’t I would probably anticipate the rotation continuing here for Baltimore, but I’m not I’m not sure. So I think receiver-wise you need to have your receivers step up. Zay Flowers and Rashad Baitman combined for two receptions for six yards in the game against Cincinnati. Obviously, the OPI, I mean, there’s context to it, but even still, that’s just not good enough. Baitman didn’t have a catch. And, you know, Baitman’s had a Baitman struggled this season and and so has Mark Andrews in terms of yardage wise. I mean, so has Isaiah. I mean, Zay Flowers has been like the past game demon for them this year. Like, he’s been awesome in the past game for the most part and no one else is like Zay Flowers has been the guy. There is such a discrepancy in targets and receptions for Zay Flowers versus everybody else. And that’s kind of how it’s gone a little bit over to Lamar Jackson era, right? It’s been like one or two favorite guys and the rest of them. And Lamar spread the ball out better over the course of his career, but Zay Flowers has over 20 receptions more than the next guy. He has over 30 targets more than the next guy, over 400 yards more. The only area where Andrews has been better is touchdowns. And Andrews has been the touchdown guy for Baltimore this season. That’s where he’s excelled. But, you know, this past game relative to what we’ve gotten used to and I thought this year it was going to be kind of oh look at this then they got dehop and everything and dehop’s good for like one or two good catches a game and you know I hope TZ gets involved a little more in this one as well. Hopefully you can involve your running backs. There are so many things they can do here. So I’m just hoping it’s a big bounceback game. They need to convert on the third and shorts. You know Baltimore is a third down offense this season. They’re 20th in the league there. It’s not been a strength for them. Pittsburgh is 28th in that department though. So, that’s been a big weakness for them. They can convert on their third downs. Baltimore’s offense. I think they’re going to be in a good spot. Coming up though, we’ll flip the field. We’ll talk Steelers offense versus Ravens defense and some final predictions. So, stay tuned. Plenty coming up here on Locked On Ravens. Ravens held on for dear life in that first half against the Bengals. They tried everything they could to keep that Ravens offense attached. And then obviously when you’re facing Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase, Burrow coming off that injury, I thought he was kind of feeling things out once he was finished with that. Yeah, he uh he made some plays. So the good thing is that the Ravens are not playing Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase this week. They are playing Aaron Rogers and DK Metaf and I just I feel like Rogers was fine in the beginning of the season for the for the Steelers, but really hasn’t been all that great recently. Obviously, he’s dealing with the wrist injury and, you know, he got his face all bashed up in the Bills game. Like, you know, Rogers is someone that doesn’t deal with pressure very well at this point in his career. You know, he’s 40 plus years old. He lost a lot of his mobility and that’s just what happens, right? But the thing to me is I So, just to talk about the Steelers for a little bit in the context of this game for the Ravens, I loved what the Steelers did this offseason, but I hated that they traded away talent to do it. Like if we were talking about an offense right now for the Steelers that had George Pickkins and DK Metaf I Steelers probably your first in the AFC North first of all and we’re probably like man this is going to be tough for the Ravens but DK hasn’t really been all that great this season for them. He’s not a great separator usually and you know some George Pickins we’ve seen is flourish in Dallas and I think you know despite Minka not really being you know he kind of fell out of favor in Pittsburgh like they’re really missing him right now. I feel like in that defense. So, it’s one thing to like acquire talent. It’s another thing to send out talent while acquiring that talent. I do not think that that was good roster decisions for the Steelers there. I don’t think Omar Khan did a good job with that. And now I think that Pittsburgh their potential is just not as high as it would have been if they kept their guys. And I get moving off of pickins. I know, you know, it probably got to a point in that locker room and everything that was going on off the field with him where it’s like, “All right, you got to move on.” And Fitzpatrick fell out of favor. But those are talented guys. And so for the Steelers offense right now, for years it was George Pickkins and Friends. Now it’s just DK Metaf and Friends. It’s a worse version of their offense. So I mean in the run game they’ve turned to Jaylen Warren. He’s been the guy there. You know Kenneth Gainwell has actually been a pretty nice find for them in the past game especially as a running back where you know he’s good. He’s a good third down back. He’s been able to really establish a nice role there. But you know they really don’t have a lot at wide receiver right I mean, Kenneth Gainwell is tied with DK Metaf for the receptions lead, which tells you their passing offense is just terrible right now. John Smith and Pat Frymouth are then the next two leaders in receptions. And then it’s guys like Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, like the pass game is really not a strong suit for them. And you can tell where, you know, their passing offense is not horrible in terms of yards per attempt. It’s 18. It’s like middling. Their rush offense is actually worse. But I just it’s a very low potential offense for me where I I feel like their floor is so much lower than their ceiling is high. And for the Ravens defense, they struggle with their pass rush last week, but we’d start started to see them turn a corner there. If you can get pressure on Aaron Rodgers, get that blitz rate up there in this game and force him to make throws, you know, I’m not saying like, oh, just, you know, you can do whatever you want against Aaron Rogers. I don’t think that’s the case. But, you know, this isn’t Green Bay, Aaron Rogers, what we’re talking about right now. And so, it’s going to be on Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey. I mean, obviously Marlin in terms of DK’s build. I’m sure he’ll get a lot of snaps on him and, you know, we’ll see what Nate does. Obviously, he’s good to go with this foot injury, but at the end of the day, I’m I’m just I’m not very high on Pittsburgh’s offense, and it’d be pretty embarrassing for this defense because like the Bengals offense is the Bengals offense, right? Like even without T. Higgins, we know how good that unit is and we know how explosive they can be. with this Steelers offense. I just I don’t really see it like they don’t really pick up a lot of yards. They’re 27th best in terms of picking up yards this year. Like essentially bottom five, bottom six in that category. You know, points they’re fine. Like they’re 10th in points and, you know, 14th in points per drive, but they don’t pick up a lot of yards. So, I just I don’t know. I feel like with the Ravens defense, you need to obviously Kyle Hamilton needs to do Kyle Hamilton things. that secondary needs to step up and you need to get pressure like we know you we know you need to get pressure on them that Steelers line you need to force them into tough decisions and I I feel good. I mean I I’ve called it all week as like eerily confident because I don’t feel like I should be confident in them. But like I just don’t think the Steelers right now have it. And do the Ravens have it? No. They they both played terribly last week. But if you just want to call the defense as a wash or maybe put the Steelers defense a little bit above the Ravens, then fine. That’s fine. I just think that the Ravens offense, and I do expect them to bounce back. This is me expecting them to bounce back. So, that’s what I’m factoring in here. Maybe I shouldn’t, but that’s what I’m doing. The Ravens offense has so much more potential than Pittsburgh’s offense where even if Baltimore doesn’t play their best game, and I’m hoping that they do. Even if Baltimore doesn’t do that, I I I still expect that offense to at least find themselves putting up like at least 14. Like I said, now these Steelers and Ravens games, you never know what’s going to happen. They tend to be a lot sloppier. And we know that Lamar over the course of his career generally, you know, he’s kind of kind of gone away with that trend in the past couple of games, but generally Pittsburgh’s defense has been the hardest for Lamar Jackson to match up against over the course of his career. So, I I’m going to go with Baltimore here. I’m going to pick the Ravens to win this game. Again, I don’t think it’s going to be a pretty game. I would love it if it was. Both teams are coming into this game very mad and very motivated. So, I think we’re going to see that on both sides of the ball, but I think Baltimore comes out on top here because I I think they have to and so does Pittsburgh. But, you know, I I I like Baltimore’s collection of talent better even if they are weak and very weak in certain areas. So, I’ll go something along the lines of 24 to 21. I think that’s kind of fine. Maybe it comes down to a loop field goal at the end. I’m not sure. Special teams also was something that’s going to play a factor here. Jordan Stout having a great season. You know, it’s Tyler Loop doing his thing. So, I’m definitely nervous for this game. I know a lot of other people are too, but I I just if they don’t win this game, they’re they’re done. Like, I I think they’re done if they don’t win this game. So, they have to. So, it’s it’s put up a shut up time for this team. Put up a shut up time for this offense, and we’re gonna have to see how it all unfolds. That’s all I have for you here today on Markdown Ravens. Thank you so much for tuning into the show.
