Today on Lockdown Red Wings, Patrick Kane’s late goal means the Red Wings win 4 to3 in Seattle. You’re Locked On Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome back to the Locked On Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fischer, Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. You can listen to us wherever you get your podcasts. The Detroit Red Wings are winners late Saturday night, early Sunday morning in Seattle to kick off the West Coast portion of the sixgame road swing. obviously started with Columbus on Thursday and they come away with the victory in what was definitely a back andforth game, but a pretty good game I would say for the Detroit Red Wings. Obviously not perfect. We’ll talk about that, but as well talk about what went well. Before we get to that though, got to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. Scotty, what was your main takeaway in this four to3 win? Thank goodness, baby. We’ll take it. We’ll take it. Uh, you know, it’s not a They don’t ask how. Uh, and it wasn’t really an ugly game. It was just a very close game. And, uh, I think it was very entertaining from a, you know, like hockey fan perspective. It was, you know, back and forth late night game. Really cool in that regard. Um, I I mean I I don’t know how the storyline from a positive perspective is anything other than the Patrick Kane goal and from a negative perspective is anything other than like John Gibson. And I I think that those are pretty clearly if you’re looking for like one good and one bad, you know, to to take out of this game, I think those are pretty clearly the the two biggest storylines. Um but but there were a lot of really solid performances uh in in this game obviously from both teams but you know from the wings there’s yeah I mean we’ll we’ll talk about them but there’s a handful of guys that uh either like scored that haven’t scored in a while or just had really good games and we’ve been talking about like needing to see more from whatever the only you know omission from that is there’s there’s still a concern surrounding Gibson and goending in general But um yeah, I think pretty I guess I just said two, so sorry if I just kind of like screwed you over there, but um All right. It’s uh it’s just a catalyst to get the conversation started. You don’t even It doesn’t really matter. I Yeah, I screw you over all the time. It’s fine. I I I think it’s just one of those things where um you know, you you kind of have a little bit of a sigh of relief and you’re like, “Okay, this was a a solid win. We’ll take it. We’ll move on.” especially being one of the the more uh you know grueling uh road trips of the year always, right? And and we’ll start off that West Canada plus Seattle with a win in plus Seattle. Um but uh I mean it’s it certainly is is uh one of those situations where you see the good and the bad. You see the the positives and the concerns surrounding the wings in a game like this. Yeah, this was a game where I thought the Red Wings came out and they started the game very strongly. The end of the first period was just all Seattle. But honestly, the second and third period, I thought the Red Wings were the better team throughout most of it. Uh it really came down to for me I guess my storyline mainly would be in a game in which your best players didn’t score goals Lurin Raymond Debrink and you know even to a certain extent Morris Cider right doesn’t score a ton of goals but usually contributes a lot on the score sheet that have an assist in this game you still were able to get the win because of secondary scoring in this one obviously Patrick Kane’s game-winning goal with just a few minutes left has a lot to do with that. Patrick Kane broke off his slump, his scoring slump in the previous game against Columbus. Scored in a very similar spot in this game, kind of cutting to the middle, similar to what Cat does all the time. Fired one past Dard. That was a, you know, vintage Patrick Kane, especially, I don’t know if vintage is even the right word. It might just be like 2025 Patrick Kane experience because just moments prior to that, he turned the puck over for an opportunity the other way. And just as you’re starting to be like, “Oh my goodness, Patrick Kane, you’re so frustrating sometimes to watch defensively.” He goes and wins the game. And it’s like that’s right. That Patrick Kane, he he’s going to give you defensive moments that that make you want to bash your head against the wall. Then he’s going to make huge game-saving plays or game-winning plays and you’re like, “You know what? All is forgiven. This is why this is why we have you Patrick Kane because you do things like that and that’s why they call him Showtime, right? Because in moments of clutch, in moments of need, he comes up clutch. So, big story line there. But then even beyond that, right, uh the big story line I mentioned was depth scoring in this game. Uh you had JVR who has now scored in five of six hockey games. Yeah. One of the greatest goal scorer to ever live. Um I’m starting to warm up to that idea. and he consistently does it in moments where the Red Wings really desperately need a goal. You know, the game-winning goal he scored against Toronto at the start of the season. He had the power play goal that tied the game against the Blue Jackets. He had a twoon-one goal in this game that tied the game with just 30 seconds remaining in the second period when you weren’t even sure if Dylan Lin was coming back from injury. So, like that was a huge lift of the spirits for the Detroit Red Wings as well. So he doesn’t just do it, he does it in moments where the team needs it the most. And he last few games like really feels like he’s found his groove again because he started the season very slow because of the fact that he obviously had the the birth of his twins before the season started. So he didn’t have any training camp. Like he looks like he’s back into into good form and it’s great to see. And he also made a huge clutch stick lift with the goalie pulled like with 30 seconds remaining in the game taking the puck away, picking the pocket of a Minnesota shooter or not a Minnesota Seattle shooter and clearing it down the ice. So he’s been very very reliable in multiple ways. Uh JVR has been absolutely great. And then yeah, you talk depth, move on from there. Andrew Cop scored his first five on five goal of the season, just his second of the year. That wasn’t initially called, but like that’s how Andrew Cop is going to score, right? It wasn’t called for anybody. It was funny the the Wing social media team just said goal. I was like goal like Yeah, I guess. Like you’re not wrong, you know. Goal. Yes. But it was just kind of a funny thing that it’s the most Andrew Cop goal of all time. You know what though? They don’t ask how. They don’t like that. And I’m not going to complain about that goal either because those are the types of goals like we’ve been begging for all season long. Like battle down low. He he was able to jostle the puck loose from the pads of Dard and kind of put it off of him into the net. Watching it in real time, I looked at it. I’m like, that’s a goal. Like I could see it from my TV clearly fully cross the goal line and no call was made until obviously the whistle down on the other end. And I’m like even the broadcast knew like this is going to be a goal. So, I was really happy for Andrew Cop because honest to goodness, he has played so well as that second line center for Casper and Cop since he’s been elevated to that position and obviously he did before his season ending injury the year prior. But for somebody like Andrew Cop who is such a vocal leader in the locker room for that team, for somebody who is depended on to play has been dependent on to play very difficult defensive minutes in the years past, it makes me very happy to see him finally get rewarded with a goal because there’s I don’t know if there’s a very few players on this team, I would argue, care as much as Andrew Copin. He just the frustration shows when he couldn’t find the back of the net. So I was really happy to see him get a goal in a greasy way like that. Absolutely. Scotty, let’s head to a quick break. When you return, we’ll talk about more notable performers. I know I kind of talked notable performers in my storyline because my story line was goals outside of the top guys. So, inherently had to talk about those goal scorers, but we got plenty more to get to as well. So, stay tuned. Segment two of Lockdown Red Wings coming up. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. Swipe, tap, ticket, go. All right, Scotty, I know I kind of rattled off a lot of notable performers here uh in segment one. So, kind of like how you were apologizing for screwing me over in segment one, I’ll apologize for screwing you over if I listed any of your notable performers there. But, who do you want to lead off with here? Yeah, I mean obviously I think the we don’t have to talk cop again, but I think that he’s obviously someone you you kind of look at as an easy notable performer in this game. JVR very similar just can’t stop scoring goals. I do want to highlight uh one EMTT Adam Finny uh if you will. Um it’s he’s another guy that when he finds the back of the net, you it it’s weird because he’s not a a depth forward in terms of his spot in the lineup most nights, but he is a guy that is not going to produce points as often as, you know, the the top top guys and the guys that you’re going to lean on for point productions. And so it’s always good when you see him uh record anything and and you know get himself in the box score in that regard because you know he’s also similar to Cop I guess in that regard like he’s also bringing value outside of that. So when he does bring that it’s kind of you know icing on the cake. Yeah. I was really happy to see him get a goal because it’s been a while I think since the last time he got a power play goal. Also I think feed it fed to him by Nate Danielson. But it’s really interesting because obviously he hasn’t really had a five on five point in a while despite playing on a line that scores a lot of goals. And you you wonder how long they they run with it before they try something different. Especially because all of the underlying data suggests he’s not being an impactful player. But like this is one of those situations where like you look at the data versus what you’re watching on the ice and you’re like these things don’t align because every single game I feel like I’m writing down Finny Chance, Finny Chance, Finny Chance because he’s always at the net, always getting rebound opportunities and in many instances feels like he’s getting robbed by great saves by goalenders. He has plays with a lot of pace. I feel like he provides a lot of value to the top line by getting to the corner and keeping the play alive in the offensive zone. So, it’s one of those situations where, and I know Jay Fresh had tweeted out a card and was a little bit critical of EMTT Finny, but it’s just one of those situations where when you watch the game, it feels like the impact that he has is not measurable because I feel like he’s been a good fit up there. And like you could replace him with someone like Marco Casper who you need to get going. And honestly, like similarly, Marco Casper, I think, has been playing good hockey lately on that third line with Danielson, but just again isn’t getting rewarded with points. It’s a very similar situation where you got two young players who when you watch the game feel like they’re doing the right things, but just aren’t getting rewarded. And it was so I was happy to see Finny get that that goal and I was happy it was Nate Danielson who got the assist. As assisted again, also by ASP. was a nice 2023 draft class tic-tac-toe play to give the Red Wings at that time the early one- nothing lead. It’s also cool to see the second power play unit score a goal. I know the Krakens power penalty kill is like one of the worst in the league, but you know, I ain’t taking that away from them. So, yeah, absolutely agree with you for sure. I think um first off, I I didn’t find what Jay Fresh said to be like critical. He was kind of just pointing out that he hadn’t produced any points lately, which is like objectively true. Um, and I’m not I’m not ragged on JFresh either. No, no, I know you just brought it up and I I know that some people felt some type of way about it. I was like, he was literally just relaying like objective information. I don’t think he really, you know, whatever. Um, people get people get very protective of their players. Yeah, I get protective of Cider, so I get it. But it’s like you don’t need to get into a Twitter argument. Yeah. I’m not like looking down at anybody. I’m just saying. Yeah. Um, yeah. I I mean I I think that the that topline left-wing conversation is just going to be so ongoing until it’s like very obviously not. And I know that sounds super layman, but like that that’s what it is. Like you it’s just going to continue to be a talking point. It’s been a talking point since last year. Um, and it’s going to continue to be until there’s a very obvious solution that has proven itself to be an obvious solution. And um, while Finny has certainly um, I I like like you mentioned, I mean, regardless of what the numbers say, I I look at him out there, I think he’s good for the line, right? like they those two guys need somebody who’s going to be not necessarily a point producer but is going to be a little griier and go into the corners and you know win puck battles and whatever. So I I think even if the you know he’s not an analytical darling I think he provides that line something that it uh maybe lacks isn’t the right word but something that it needs and so um yeah it’ll be interesting to see going forward. I mean, if he can start producing points at an even remotely similar clip to what he was doing in the first what three weeks of the season, um then yeah, those questions and concerns kind of go to rest because then you’re getting a point producer, too. Yeah. Uh I also thought that uh the rest of the fourth line, sorry I had drew a blank there. You know, we mentioned that JVR had a really good game, but I want to shout out that fourth line, too. The fourth line of comfort, JVR, and Michael Rasmusen have been dogs. They’ve been so good when they go out there. And, you know, big shout out, too. We we’ve been talking about it. Michael Rasmusen has looked really really good since coming back from being scratched. like has been playing very heavy, playing with his physical gifts and he’s making things happen with those physical gifts. The amount of board battles I saw him and and pucks I saw him win in the corners by using his size, we’ve seen two or three times now him use his size to protect the puck and make a power move towards the net. He’s looked very very good and JT Conffer has looked really comfortable and we talked about it like the idea of having Danielson up and making JT Comper your 4C is like that’s a that’s a really good fourthline center to have. You’re paying them a lot of money, mind you. 5.1 million, I think, something like that. But the C, you have plenty of cash pay, so it’s not even a problem. Like, yeah, I’ll take JT Confer as a really dang good 4C. And they all together, I mean, obviously J James Van Remdikeke scores the game-winning goal or the game tying goal late in the second, but Michael Rasmusen and JT Confer no slouches either. They played 10 minutes and 10 seconds of five on five hockey together, which is 30 seconds fewer than Larkin and Cops line. So they played nearly identical five on five minutes. They won their minutes 17 shot attempts to eight against. So a 68% shot attempt share and their expected goals in this game uh was 86%. They had an 86% goal share expected goal share rather in this hockey game. They looked really really good. So that makes me incredibly happy because one of the issues that we’ve been talking about and since the start of the season was, you know, one of three things like lack of depth scoring, goalending, and defensive lapses. It feels like in recent games, and we’ve been talking about this, even as goalending still persists, defensive mistakes still persist. It seems as if the depth scoring is starting to kind of figure itself out a little bit. Obviously, a big part of that is James Dream Reeite getting hot. But that that goal from Andrew Cop’s a big one, too. JT Comfort scored a couple goals. Michael Rasmusen has you’re getting contribution from down in the lineup now. So, if you can just figure out your own zone, they’ll win a little bit more consistently. Yeah. Yeah. And that’s the thing we talked about, you know, a lot last week was like it just it always feels like it’s something and you just you you fix one and then the other one bursts and then you fix that and then the you know, it’s just Yeah. Scotty, let’s head to another quick break. When we return, uh we still got to talk about Gibson. We still have to talk about Morett Cider and Simon Edmonson and then uh we’ll preview the game against uh the Vancouver Conucks. So stay tuned to segment three of Lockdown Red Wings. Place your live your NFL live bets all season long. FanDuel, the game moves fast. So can you. All right, Scotty. Uh, Morett Cider and Simon Edmonson had an absolutely stellar hockey game. And Mort Cider has been honestly I I’ve ranted about how good he’s been all season long. Simon Edison on the other hand had a very slow start to the season. He and Axel Sandine Pelica were put together to start the season. Very quickly we learned that Simon Edmonson is not at a level had not been at a level yet to be able to carry the burden the defensive burden of a pair with a rookie offensive Dman. And part of that was just also the slow start and the fact that he was hurt coming into training camp. So he didn’t get the he didn’t get the ramp up the same other the same ramp up other players got. So they mixed it up and they put Simon Evson back with more Cider which we were very happy about. That’s the pair we want to see together regardless. Um and since then he’s been getting better. He’s been getting better. He’s been getting better and I think we kind of seen saw that come to a head in this hockey game. He had two assists in this one. Um ju just them together as a pair was absolutely phenomenal in this hockey game. And Simon Edmonson actually is now the holder of the best nightly game score for the Detroit Red Wings on the season thus far according to hockey stats. And notably Mor Cider holds six of the other top 10 for top nightly scores for the Detroit Red Wings. So the Red Wings have figured out their top pair. Sherro and ASP play pretty good together for the most part. ASP and Sherro are still prone to mistakes every now and again, but they’ve been getting better. Sherro’s been having a very good season. It’s just the third pair that’s been kind of a giant question mark, but man, Moreter and Simon Edmonson are one of I mean, analytically, they are one of the best defensive pairs in the NHL. Yeah. And that’s awesome. And that and that’s obviously, you know, you zoom out a little bit, that’s what people were envisioning when they were both prospects or when Edmonson joined the system. So, yeah, really cool. And and obviously that’s something that happened last year as well. and and I’m sure there will be times this year when you know Sherat struggles or ASP continues to struggle or whatever it may be where we’ll talk about you know is it worth breaking them up and and splitting up Edmonson and and Cider to I just don’t feel you can they play so well together. Yeah, I I mean I don’t think you can right now because of how well and like serviceable Sherat has been, but I do think, you know, there’s there there’s a a point in which that’s a conversation again, but it’s not right now. And so I think you get to put your two best defenseman on the same pair and you get to play them, you know, half an hour a night and and you go out and uh yeah, they they’ve been absolutely fantastic. amongst defensive pairs. You know, the other day I went on a rant about more cider individually as a pair amongst defensemen who have defensive pairs who have played at least 300 minutes together. They are the top team, the top pair in the league in expected goal share at 61.7%. They literally top the league in that statistic despite the fact that they get bulk defensive zone deployments and face the toughest competition on the team because of this fact that they’re the top pair. And we already know I I rant so much about how Moret Cider faces such difficult competition even compared to his contemporaries who play similar minutes. Well, of course that means Simon Edison is right there too. Now he didn’t start the season with the Detroit or with Simon or with Morett Cider. So that means that he lags behind a little bit in quality of competition across the league but or across the year but he is catching up. They are such a good pair together. I mean what where are they with uh shot attempts? Good old Corsy. They’re top of the league with 300 minutes there too at 58.8% uh just above Gabricov and Adam Fox. The the Red Wings legit have one of the best defensive pairs in the NHL right now. How insane is that to say? I got I mean very if only they could figure out goalending. Well, we can’t have it all. You know, I will say this is the second win in a row for John Gibson and he made a lot of very key saves in this hockey game. In games prior, right, it was always he’s making the saves that he should be making, but when you need a clutch save, he’s not making it. I think he made some clutch saves in this hockey game that keep the game either tied or within one. The problem was at least two of those three goals were just just they just beat him clean. Yeah. And one there was a partial screen, but unfortunately you just like kind of lose that benefit of the doubt. But I think this still was a better game for John Gibson. And I know that right now people would probably argue that the bar for that is pretty low, but he he’s the last two games by him have been better. And so you just hope he can continue to build upon that because we know how good John Gibson can be. Yeah, I guess I mean like it’s just uh it’s just a situation where what other choice do you really have? like it’s it’s Kosa, which we talked about a little bit last week, I guess, but they’re just in a position where they they gave up too much and invested too much into Gibson for him to just be like, “Okay, well, he’s not good the first three months, so we’re pulling plug.” Like they they kind of have to see it through at this point. And so, you hope that you can build one, you know, decent outing on top of each other and and get hot here. I think that they they might give it till the new year to see if he can figure it out before they start really considering Sebastian Kosa. But at the same time, you hope that in the meantime, it doesn’t really sink your playoff chances. Puts you behind the eightball. Well, yeah, because neither him or Tala hasn’t been very good lately either. I mean, we just talked about it. Talbet basically cost the Red Wings the victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets. That’s a goalie who has been overall pretty solid in his tenure with the Detroit Red Wings. So that’s that’s their biggest flaw right now for sure still is the is the goalending. I would say pretty comfortably at that. Right. Uh the only other thing from this game is Dylan Larkin took a puck to the face, returned after missing like the last five to 10 minutes of the second period. He did return to start the third with like a half shield half cage combo. We I was surprised. I listened to the postgame media available availability and unless I missed it, nobody asked about Larkin’s status. I would I would hope that if he came back against the Kraken in this game that he’s probably good to go maybe with just another, you know, the full shield from here on forward until he’s fully healed because his mouth was pretty swollen, but we don’t know the status as far as I’m aware. Yeah. not not as we sit here and record this on Sunday afternoon. So, um yeah, I mean you you hope you hope that he’s fine. Obviously, that’s a big thing. We don’t even have to like talk about it. We can just pretend like everything’s fine and until proven otherwise. I if cuz the thing is is if he’s not and he is hurt and he does miss time, that’s pretty much tantamount to losing Raymond or Cider. Like it really really hurts your any chances you have. taking that step forward because you need those guys to be everyday guys. So hopefully he’s a okay. Scotty, the Detroit Red Wings tonight play the Vancouver Conucks. They are one of the worst teams in the NHL. What did I say before we hoped on? They’ve lost nine of the last 13 or 14. They did, however, just snap a four-ame losing streak by beating the Minnesota Wild. And on top of that, we know after a loss to the Nashville Predators that the Red Wings are not beneath or not above losing to just about anyone when they feel like it. They’re currently the second worst team in the NHL because of their their victory. So, Vancouver Conucks, Scotty, what do you got? Well, they’re not a very good team. I I mean, it’s interesting, too, because we talked a little bit about them last week. they’re not good and potentially trying to get worse actively uh because they are, you know, potentially going into a uh a hard sell of a deadline here. So, um and and you know, I say potentially just to because the deadline’s not tomorrow, but I think almost assuredly they will trade away a handful of players on that team. So, yeah, kind of a a fall from grace. They’re not too far removed from, you know, what was that three seasons ago now where they were, did they win presidents that year? They were had the crazy crazy year. I think they may have. They were like like the definition of PDO immersions. They 105 all year long and they never came down until the playoffs for sure. So, um yeah, I mean just a a fall from that certainly, but um there’s still, you know, when healthy like there’s still some talent on there obviously and and that’s uh they hope to get decent returns for those players, but in the same breath, I mean, you look at the the current construction and the current production and there’s it’s very hard to justify a loss here, I would say. Yes, but in the NHL any day anything can happen. The Red Wings have you mentioned at the beginning of the show this was a grueling road trip and it’s certainly grueling from the in the perspective that it’s long and it’s on the other side of the continent. But the quality of the teams that they play, Columbus has been middling for sure. Seattle has been middling at best and struggling a lot lately. Vancouver has been struggling all season long. Calgary is the third worst team in the league. They’ve been struggling all season long. Edmonton’s gotten hot. They’re they’re back. So, they’re they’re a threat. Chicago’s fun but inexperienced. So, even though this is a long grueling road trip, there’s such a real opportunity for the Red Wings to come away from this road trip with what? So, six games over six points, you know, over 500 points percentage. They’ve already collected three points. four-game point streak, by the way, for what it’s worth. Overtime loss win, overtime loss win. Uh, but it’s certainly I I feel you you have to get six or seven if to to Oh my god, you looked at me, too, and that made it worse, dude. I mean, come on. I hate it. It’s funny, but I kind of hate it. Um, it’s every single meme you send me. It is not. It’s how I feel. Oh, you mean in general? I thought you meant I’ve sent those memes, but no, I No, no, I meant the the it’s kind of funny, but I hate it. That’s Yeah. No, that’s that’s that’s that is the that is my my humor niche. Yes. Uh let’s just end it there. All right, Scotty, any final thoughts? We do ball. I’ll be back with a new episode tomorrow recapping the game against the Vancouver Conucks. It’s going to be a late one, so stay tuned for that. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.

Patrick Kane had a vintage clutch moment late in the third period, ensuring Detroit left Seattle with at least a point. But it was the man drafted just after him in 2007, James van Riemsdyk, who has been clutch the last week in a half. Meanwhile, Seider and Edvinsson have been hands down the best pair in the league. #LGRW

  1. Jfresh is so bias it’s insane, he hates the Red Wings. Also if you prove him or his data wrong he ghosts you…. His belief in his “analysis” often overlaps common sense and/or other data that counter points his system. Biggest fraud on the web…. Guy is called “jfresh” and people take him seriously….. that is all you need to know.

  2. Really strong 3rd period from this team and a solid win on the road. Copp has looked great on the 2nd line again. Ras has looked really good. Elmer has looked good. I like all the lines as they’re constructed now. Hopefully they keep it rolling through a busy week on the road. LGRW

  3. Kaspet is the only prospect who has done nearly nothing this year, respectfully i dont think putting him onnthe first line is viable when he did nothing on the second, third and 4th line, he needs to work through his issues before being rewarded, i believe in him, but you cant take finnie off the top line because you're both right he does so much to free up larkin and razor. If kasper starts making major contributions then id put him on the top line and move finnie with danielson, but right now he is a liability for the top line as he isnt winning board battles and is not engaging like finnie, 7th round be damned, finnie is their best prospect right now.

  4. Finnie may not have gotten many points 5 on 5 recently, but from watching the games alot of the the points the 1st line has gotten recently Finnie was just the 4th guy to touch the puck, it would be interesting to see how many 3rd assists he has
