A Quinn Hughes TRADE With The Vancouver Canucks & NJ Devils Is Closer to Happening?
Hey everybody, welcome to Hockey Skate Down. I’m going to get straight into the video. I’m not doing an intro or nothing. Um, you know, there was choice words that were said last night during the Saturday headlines with Elliot Freeman and what he had to say about Quinn Hughes and the New Jersey Devils. And Quinn Hughes was asked postgame about this in Vancouver Conucks media availability. And I’m going to play both clips and then I’ll come and talk back to the talk back about this because if there’s ever a chance this is going to happen this season, it’s going to be soon. So, um, and I don’t think soon like in the next coming days, but I do think it may happen leading up to this trade deadline. So, stay tuned. I’ll play both those videos. Then I’ll come back for commentary. Always ask you say, “Okay, who’s busy? What teams are active this week?” And this week the number one answer was Devils. Lot of balls in the air. uh really looking around to see what’s out there. Now, among their targets, they’re believed to include two players from Nashville, Steven Stamco, who has say over this, and Ryan O’Reilly, who’s been promised verbally say over this. But once Vancouver announced that they were open for business, sent that email around to the league. I do believe there was a conversation, at least one, between the Devils and the Conucks about Quinn Hughes. And I stress, I do not believe there is anything imminent. I don’t even know that they’re anywhere far along, but I do believe that conversation was had about where things stand and where they might be going. Now, also, it should be mentioned with the Devils, they’re because of their injury and cap situation, they’re dollar in, dollar out. So, if they’re bringing in somebody, they’re going to have to remove people. And I think that’s why there’s so much time around the Devils. They got a lot going on. And you have nothing Elliot from the New Jersey side. What would be the return if ever Quinn don’t even want to go? You’re really see that that’s why you’re taking half the blame. That’s right. I mean, no. I mean, I I’m doing what I can. Like you said, I’m on the ice. It wasn’t like uh if there was a call, me, Jim, and Fitzy hopped on hopped on the call, you know, I wasn’t a part of that. Um, but obviously I’m aware that, you know, things like that could happen for sure. So, there you have it. Elliot Freeman talked about what the Devils are looking at. He said that they’re talking to the national predators about Stephen Stampos and Ryan O’Reilly, but he did say that once it went out about Quinn Hughes being available. You know, the Devils did do their their thing of calling them to see what could happen. And um you know, Elliot Freeman did say at least one uh time they talked, he says that he stresses nothing is imminent. uh he said that they’re not far along and it has to be dollars in dollars out for the New Jersey Devils because of the injuries they’re dealing with and because of their cap situation which we all know. So um and then what Quinn said is pretty telling as well. So Quinn Hughes said uh when he was asked about the trade rumors, he knows he knows of the he knows of the call. He said he wasn’t on it with Jim Rutherford and uh Fitzgerald. And that’s another thing I have to stress. He called Fitzgerald Fitzy. So, you wouldn’t call another GM by their nickname if you know you think there’s a possibility you might be playing with them soon. Um, and he, you know, and the thing he ended off with, he said he’s aware that anything can happen for sure. So, you know, when you’re trying to break down things, it is a little bit telling what Quinn Hughes said said, but um, you know, I don’t know. This is going to be a tough thing to do. You know, Fitzgerald is on the hot seat now. The Devils are losers of their last five games. They’ve scored one goal in the last three games. And that’s, you know, it’s it’s something has to happen. And I think that uh if you’re going to make a trade, especially of this magnitude, to bring in Quinn Hughes, I would do it as soon as you can. I wouldn’t wait to the trade deadline because then, you know, you want to see what happens uh in regards to that. But I know about the cap situation. It gets a bit easier to do as we approach the trade deadline. But, you know, the only way the Devils can win this trade is if Quinn Hughes goes to Jim Ryder and said, “The only team I want to play for is the New Jersey Devils.” If he says, “Trade me to any team,” then I I would say this is a difficult move uh to make for the New Jersey Devils because you’re going to have to give up a ton to get Quinn Hughes. And that’s where I think a lot of teams are very hesitant. They don’t want to give up a lot to the Vancouver Conucks because they know he may sign with the Devils once his contract is up after um next season. So why give up all these assets that Vancouver Conucks are asking if you know he’s going to go to the Devils and sign there? So that’s where I think a lot of teams are possibly giving him lower than what I think. And you know with the Devils I just I I I don’t want to say that the the Vancouver Conucks aren’t going to get as much as they anticipate. But you know the package for the Devils to go back the other way when Elliot Friedman’s talking about dollars in dollars out has to be Douggee Hamilton. So, I think the Devils will get um to have to give up some picks and and prospects that are very close to making the NHL. And the Devils do have that. Um but it’s not like they’re going to get players cuz I’m hearing situations where people in the media, especially like Nick Hippos and them talking about Jasper Brad and Shimon Nemitz, it’s not going to be them. If the Devils are in a playoff position by the time this whole trade goes down and once our players get healthy, it’s going to be a different Devils team. We hope. But, you know, with Hughes back, with Jack Hughes back, with Jonathan Kobevich, with uh Brett Peshy, with them skating, you know, I think this will happen as they’re about to near a return because then we have to see what’s going on. They have there has to be a move that has to be made to clear out some cap space. And um you know with the other trade that they mentioned, I still think there’s a possibility that that happens as well. So I will do my next video on that talking about the whole Nashville situation. But um yeah, this is a a thing where, you know, I love Quinn Hughes. I would just hope that they waited till he becomes a free agent, but you know, this is uh you know, if you can get him at his cap hit now for another year and a half, why wouldn’t you want to do that if you could afford to make a couple of trades? But the dire need for the Devils is up front. They need a winger. They need a a third center. They need more depth in regards to that. You know, I don’t necessarily think they need defenseman, but if one can go out and you bring in a Quinn Hughes, you do everything you can to make that happen because Quinn Hughes is arguably one of the best defenseman in the NHL today. So, comment below. What do you think about this? If you’re a Vancouver Conucks fan, are you worried right now about the package coming back to you? because it, you know, as a Devils fan, when we’re talking about this, again, if it’s only to the New Jersey Devils, I could see it being a package involving Douggee Hamilton, uh, picks and prospects. So, uh, comment below what do you think about this. Uh, and if you’re a Devil fan, I know you’re ecstatic. I know you’re ecstatic cuz I’ve seen all the things going around social media. You feel now this is the closest that this is going to happen before his contract is up with the Vancouver Canucks. So, comment below. Let me know what you think about this. Elliotte Friedman during the NHL Saturday Headlines Dropped Huge News that there has been at least a call made with The Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Rutherford and New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald about what it would take to acquire Canucks Captain and star Defenseman Quinn Hughes.
Quinn Hughes has been in Trade Rumors with the Devils For a while since all 3 Brothers have talked about The desire to Play with each other on the same team. Can this happen soon or leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline?

First, good job on the video. I am a Canucks fan and the Hughes situation is a nightmare. With that said, I will say that the Devils cap situation is a bit of a nightmare as well. I can assure you that the Canucks have no interest in Dougie Hamilton and his anchor contract. Saying that, Plain and simple the Canucks need young help down the middle, a prospect D-man and a pick minimum. I can’t see the Devils coming up with that even in two years. If they did take Hamilton they will want at least Mercer and Nemec & a pick in return. In all likelihood a better deal could happen with the Red Wings in my judgement. Quin lives in Michigan in the offseason as well as his family. Red Wings could make the deal tomorrow with a tons of cap space, prospects picks. Nate Danielson and/or Marco Kasper, Axel etc Devils have a real nice team. I am not sure that the fan base realizes how good Quin is but he probably ranks in the top 7 or 8 players on the planet. He and Makar are the best D in the world period.
Finally as a Canucks fan this is devastating. I do believe that the Devils will be in the hunt, I would not bet against them. However, if the deal is not done soon I suspect that the price will soar as the season goes on. Happy Holidays to all of you “Joyzee” guys.
More made up nonsense
A nice wish for Jersey! Give up garbage to get Quinn? If Rutherford made that deal he would be fired on the spot!!
Package has to include Nemec, Casey & a 1st.
The Canucks need trade Thatcher because he not good gaoltender. It was mistake trading there other gaoltenders. The Canucks are not good at all. They suck. For Quinn Hughes they should keep him on tell his contract ran out because other teams not offering nothing for him just bench for the season take c away from because he not the captain anymore. Give the captain spot to someone else.
u have one of the best defenseman of all time leading in many statistical categories for dougie hamilton??? teams are backing up the truck to pay the premium for 2 playoff runs. u are trying to get him cheap with the justification u can get him for free later. thats not guaranteed. he can choose to go play for a contender instead.
You think Dougir Hamilton doesnt have canucks on modified no trade list?
What a waste! You have a player that is loved by the city and is captain and he can't keep his mouth shut! A professional would be shooting down all the rumors if he was a class act! If not to act with professional then at least for the fans that hold him with such high regard, what a waste!
If the Devils do this, the purpose should be to save cap space. That only happens if Hamilton goes the other way, and yet they still have cap AND defense roster-space problems once Pesce and Kovacevic are healthy. The team really needs help in the bottom-six forwards (after Jack is healthy) and learning to play without Jack. Unless it helps the cap situation, I’d wait out the season before going after Quinn. (Getting a new goalie coach would help with no cap implications, but that’s a different discussion altogether).
Nemec is undoubtedly going to be in that package
Canuck fans are really struggling with this one.
Please re-sign with the Nucks for 7 years, Huggy. Vancouver needs you!!!
Hawks have assets. But
would not do it.
Ripped off deal
People need to understand that new jersey cant afford hughes on the money side. There has to be some going out as well and why is Hamilton the one being talked about when the canucks do not need a right hand D? If dougie is involved in some way there qould be a 3rd party involved because if im not mistaken he has a no movement or atleast a modified no move. Then theres the resigning of quinn which gets even more complicated. If new jersey is going for quinn i think the canucks are asking for bratt because the canucks are desperate for scoring help and then plus plus maybe new jersey trades dougie to someone else in 3 way trade and gives the canucks a couple pieces from that deal? Again who really knows anything but i really dont see the canucks getting dougie hamilton on there team when its all said and done.
If they wait for him to be UFA they can only sign him to a 6 year deal that doesn't have huge signing bonus'. If a team RE-signs him to a contract before September 15 2026 they can give him 2 extra years and crazy signing bonus'. Quinn would be leaving 40 million ish dollars of guaranteed money that is lockout proof and paid up front on the table to play with his brothers. You think that is likely?
Good luck with that
no way bro hamilton is a old man
pretty sure he ends up in Detroit. Then his brothers will end up there too. Home is where the heart is.
Unfortunately I think the trade will have to be like Calgary & Florida’s trade for Tkachuk. We may have to give up someone like Bratt. The question is..is acquiring Quinn going to make us a Stanley Cups contender bc rn we’re not
In the off season, the devils could just wait Vancouver out; now, with the New Jersey free fall and Fitz feeling the heat, Vancouver holds the cards
