Hughes, Myers, DeBrusk & Adam Foote Post-Game Media | Canucks vs. Red Wings (Dec 8, 2025)

I mean, I don’t know if we had struggle generating, just genu struggling to capitalize. Um, yeah, I mean, I think we’re generating fine, lots of chances, but it’s taken taken 10, 15 looks possibly to score. Is that credit to him or was it a matter of shooters bearing down? I mean, on any given night, it could be either or, right? I mean, even um you know, the hottest teams in the league run into, you know, great goalies, but um I don’t know with uh with tonight territorially like it, as you said, you guys had had your fair share of chances, but it felt like the breakdowns you did have as a team were pretty significant. How how do you sort of think about that part of your game? Yeah, I mean, I feel like they have breakdowns, too. Um but yeah, ours our were definitely significant tonight. I mean, um our goalies have been really good all year, like kept us in a lot of games, but uh just something we’re going to have to continue to work on. Um yeah, about uh not having PD tonight. I mean, you guys have had your share of injuries all season long, but just you how much more challenging without a guy like that? Yeah, it’s obviously challenging. I mean, we’re I mean, you already know where we’re at um as far as injuries and, you know, a little thin in the lineup there, but um I mean, I think guys are working as hard as they can and doing what they can and um like I said, we had a chance this night. It wasn’t like, you know, we got slaughtered with the territory game. Um so, I can’t can’t really say anything there. You prided yourself on being able to stay focused regardless of the amount of noise out there. Have the last couple days been difficult? I mean, I think it’s difficult just because um you know, I want to win and where we’re at in the in the standings and you know, credit to them. They have some they have some really good players and they’ve done um a good drop good job through the draft and you see that um coming to fruition now, but it’s not like that’s you know top three team in the league like you know we played pretty played them well tonight and it just didn’t um couldn’t capitalize on our chances. Um as far as the other things I mean I think um I’m doing everything I can. I think that playing as good as I can and uh if you know it wasn’t like that um for me for my standards then obviously that would be a problem. Oh, I mean did a lot of good things. Um, you know, especially you look at the first two periods, I thought we were the more dominant team. You know, had trouble capitalizing. Um, you know, I think, you know, if you take a look at some of the things we can get better at, tough to say right now, but, uh, you know, I think our our changes can be better. Our holdups around different parts of the rink can be better. You know, just little things like that that can give us a little extra second. Um, but we we’ll keep taking a look. Just got to keep pushing forward, doing a lot of good things. We have to build off of those. I know you guys would always like to generate more as a group, but what would make the difference right now in terms of capitalizing on some of the chances you are creating? Uh, creating a bit more chaos around the net, get guys, get bodies to the net, shot mentality more. I know we had a lot of shots tonight, but you know, you take a look at us uh us Dmen, I think we can have a more of a shot mentality and we just get bodies around the net, create some chaos. Um, you know, that’s my initial reaction, but uh we’ll take a look. Tyler does feel like your team’s defensive game is trending in the right direction, even if the results haven’t always been there last couple weeks. Um, and tonight, you know, it’s not like you spent a lot of time in your zone or or off puck as a team, but it did seem like when the breakdowns came, they were significant. How do you sort of think through that given how your team’s played? Um, honestly, I don’t think about it too much. Um, you know, like you said, I think our def our DZone structure, our DZone game has improved a lot. I think uh as a unit of five, we’re you know, we’re playing really good structure. You know, there’s some mistakes we can clean up for sure and that uh that could be the difference uh you know, the other team getting the first goal, getting some momentum uh to us getting the first goal. So, uh we’ll just keep working on it. Uh try and uh get more and more consistent with it and uh you know, focus on the positive. Yeah, obviously um you know the goalie made some big saves and um you know I thought we generated enough to at least get one. Um myself personally could have had a couple. So um obviously for sure. Yeah. What makes the difference with some of those chances and bearing down on them? Uh just inches. Yeah. I mean um yeah just inches and just Yeah, I guess sometimes it’s just meant to be. But um you obviously got to try to do something different. I mean um it’s costing us right now. How hard is it to stay positive when it is a game of inches, but the inches are going against you? Yeah, it’s um Yeah, I mean uh I’ve gone through things like this personally, so you know, when other guys go through it, you try to help them out, but uh yeah, I mean, you’re losing and uh it’s close. So, um then it’s happening. So, yeah, it’s it’s that is the hardest thing. It’s the only way you can go through it. Um you have to try to take it uh in stride, but um constantly getting denied is um becoming an issue. Five star one. Is it a different game if you don’t ping one at the post there? Uh or score on the breakaway kind I had or the back door I had or Yeah. I mean uh any one of those uh you could pick you could pick them. Yeah. I think it’s a different He made a pretty impressive save on the back door play. Just take us through it. It’s good. Yeah, I just tried to get it quick uh up and quick and um yeah, I mean uh it’s a great save by him. Uh I got to finish that. That’s uh I couldn’t believe it. And like I was saying earlier, there’s a couple other ones where it just isn’t going my way. You you did get it up and quick though and it it still got saved. As a shooter, can you take something from the fact that, you know, you were putting it in the right spot and it just seems your way or not in the moment? No, I mean you got to tip your cap obviously. Um but we need them. Uh I don’t really there’s no winds in that um kind of keeps you up. So um but I think at the end of the day it’s got to get up higher next time. It’s it’s across the board. in terms of the way your team’s controlling play, the sort of defensive structure we’re seeing the last couple weeks, results haven’t been there, but it does seem like you’re playing better as a team and yet with where you’re at, I’m sure there’s no solace there. Does the reality of of your perch make it more difficult to just sort of stick with that process? Well, we have to I mean, or else we’ll lose worse. Um, so I mean, uh, we got to find, um, we got to find ways to get pucks in the net. um you know, play better defensively. I thought, like you said, I actually didn’t mind some of the things we’ve been doing. Um we got to keep at it. Um stay positive and um but at the same point, yeah, I mean, if we we go away from it, we’ll you know, it’s only bad things, right? So, um we got to stick with the program. Um and we got to just find ways to to make that play. The home record this year hasn’t been great. Only four wins so far. Is there something that is that starting to creep in a little bit into this team that there has been the struggles at home? Uh, I mean, yeah, our record isn’t great in general. Um, so I mean, I know you’re laughing, but um, we obviously want to be better at home. I think we’ve talked about it a lot and um, you know, we need to make this a harder place to play um, in in general and give some of the fans a cheer about, you know, they pay a lot of money and um, it’s never good, putting up a good start with your thoughts on the game tonight. We were rolling and uh we had a little bit of a mishap for their first. Doubled up behind the goal line there and they got a got one on us and then uh they’re buzzing for the the most part. I think I asked you the other night about whether you need to generate more chances or bear down on the ones that you get in a game like this tonight. You know, you have a couple good looks. De Brusk in particular had some opportunities. What makes the difference in terms of turning some of those chances into goals? We had a lot of good ones. Uh we there was lopsided there for a good part of the game. Um you know and then we like you we had a couple mistakes that went into the back of our net and that’s the game the goalie was keeping them in it early and well actually for the most of the game the goalie kept them in it and and um you know we’ll go review it and see if we could have dug. The guys were digging at the net. Uh so Adam you said earlier today that you might know today or tomorrow in terms of uh Patterson. Do you have an update on his status at this point? Um, I know he felt better today, which is a good sign. So, there’s still We’ll I’ll know more in the next couple days as far as the time frame. I don’t want to touch on that yet, but with your team game tonight, territorially, I’m sure you’ll have liked it, but it did seem like when things did break down for your group, they they obviously broke down pretty significantly. um despite the defensive gains you’ve made, how do you sort of think through what you saw from your team off puck tonight? Well, we we we had a we’re all over them. We had a double up up below our goal line. It’s not not the way we play and it it cost us. And then we had another double up for a goal. Um it’s, you know, you give a team like that or any NHL team if you if you do a double when you shouldn’t two guys get put in a twoon-one situation. I mean, that you can’t let that happen. Um, and it happened twice and uh, you know, then we we had a turnover at our blue line. I think uh, Huggy and Phil ran into each other there a little going for the puck and then you saw, you know, a tic-tac-toe goal. So, uh, so, but, you know, that’s what happens. You You have full control of the game buzzing and they they we’re giving them fits and and then we have a a mistake. um you know, you’re not going to they’re not going to score below their goal. Well, they shouldn’t. It’s happened in this league, but um you know, that’s and you give them a little bit of life, but we it is what it is. We’ve you pulled Lankin in after the the second. Can you just fill us in on the decision and where you’re at with his game right now? Well, I thought he was a little off even though he we did have a mistake. The one where we uh doubled up, he had to tip the guy alone, you know. Um thought it also would give the guys a little bit of a spark or you know that going into the third. Um you know Len has been a good pro and and sometimes it’s just not your night and uh it wasn’t all on him. He was left alone a couple times but um just thought I’d see if we get the guys going. Uh Topillos played well in the last game and and did some good things in the third period. Is it but is it possible that he could potentially go on Thursday? Uh well I’m I’m large percentage demo Demco Cole will be going Thursday probably. So Dem Cole is probably going to be back for us. Adam, how much consideration did you give to just staying with Tolo after the way he played his last start and the fact that Kevin has struggled a little bit to to make a volume of saves that even he would want to make. Yeah, we we it’s a great question. We we thought about it and um we at that moment when we made that decision, we weren’t sure where Demer Demer was. We knew he was close and um you know, Lance has been, you know, he had some stuff going on in his own life and uh he he’s he’s fighting through through that and he’s doing a hell of a job. Um um so we just didn’t weren’t sure. I think maybe if I knew that Demco was ready, we might have put Toll back in. Um, but you know, Lance is a true pro and he he’ll he’ll be he’ll be fine. He wasn’t, you know, he’s been off a little bit, but um, you know, also we can’t we can’t put them alone on an island either. And a couple couple today we just made like we have full control of a hockey game and you know, saw what happened.

  1. Quinn deserves to be traded. Not that he shouldnt be a canuck. But that the canucks have done nothing for him, or garland for that matter. Canucks should let these guys go play for decent teams, the canucks have become a bottom feeder team.. fans need to stop going to games, the entire conditoning team need firing when the injuries are this rampant and the organization needs a shake top down

  2. Aquilini hires Allvin.. Allvin hires Foote. Allvin signs terrible contracts and trades away some great players then hires a rookie coach with little to no experience at coaching. Who wants to pay to watch this?

  3. I wonder if Hughes stays, he'll be one of them players who was the best but doesn't win a Cup, can come close, but nothing more, I'd say nothing less, but that would be a lie.

  4. I disagree with the view the Canucks played well. They did NOT> They gave up the puck way too much. O'Connor just let the puck go to the Wings on a 3 on 2!! He is the queen of coughing up the puck. The goals in the 2nd were the result of just losing the puck. They end up out of position because they are transitioning to the rush. How else did the Wings end up with guys 100% open in front of the net. They also lose like 80% of the battles for the puck along the boards. Also Lankinen should sit for like 10 games. It's time to look at Tolopilo.

  5. Were totally out playing every team just bad luck believe in the process great job boys keep it going don’t worry it will all work out we’ll make the playoffs a lot of games left Go! Canucks Go!

  6. There is nothing wrong with the Canucks future. They will be okay without Hughes. However, I gotta say Canucks infatuation with Hughes is both nuts and understandable to a degree: The guy holds the puck too long, he is REALLY small, and he is for sure not captain material. Every time he is not in the line up the teams performs well. Hughes will be hard pressed to win a cup in New Jersey. Toronto would be the best destination for him. For Knies and #44. Penguins is not the destination for sure. I don't see the trade pieces.
