THE STOVE IS HOT! 🔥 REPORTS: Kyle Schwarber returns to Phillies, Edwin Díaz signs with Dodgers!

Kyle Schwarber according to Jeff Passen landing back in Philly according to Will Sammon. Edwin Diaz going to the Dodgers. This is fresh stuff. Joel Sherman with uh some details and context on both. Let’s start with Schwarber. This was the leader in the clubhouse, right? His returning to Philadelphia. Is any of this five for 50 surprising to you? It is not. Uh and five for 150. For 150, 30 average a year. Um, we have done a couple of shows now together through these past few days and we kept saying this is the key guy. This is the guy we think if something big is going to happen here, it’s going to be him and that’s going to be the unclogging of the artery to kind of like, oh, now I know I’m not getting him because he got 5 years as a 33y old slugger. That’s going to be 50 million more than any slugger at 33 has gotten because there were so many teams on them Harold and Matt that you had to go to five. you had to go to at least 30 a year. And all of those teams, there were at least nine very serious teams with him. Eight of those teams now know we are not getting Kyle Schwarberg, but they have a lot of money to burn in their pocket and we are now going to see the hard pivot. Pete Alonzo, Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman. I expect a flood of trades still. There’s a lot out there in the industry. This was the one that had to break the dam because there were so many teams in love with the idea of Kyle Schwabber hitter and Kyle Schwabber clubhouse and the team that knew him best said we can’t let him out the door. Welcome to the winter meetings that fired up Joel Sherman. Before we pivot away from from this, you did say and we talked about no way Dumbrosski is letting his guy go. That was so that was my thing is always remember who’s involved. This is John Middleton owner who has essentially said finances are not standing in the way of me trying to win a championship and Dave Drowski who has spent 40 years chasing the top of the market and when he was wanted something go ahead and tell me the time he didn’t get it like that’s not going to be like I’m going to need more than this number of fingers I might need this many fingers. So does that apply to JT Ramutoo now? I think same principle. So, I think somebody said to me the other day, Maddie, uh, I want to give you the pref list of the Phillies. Schwarber is one, Schwabber is two, Schwabber’s three, and he’s through five. Once that’s cleared, they’re going to see how much money did it actually cost us to do Schwabber. I do think they return to Real Mudo. out. Now, the key thing here is those players are still good, but they are putting a lot of age back onto this roster, and that will be interesting, you know, because it’s also with Bryce Harper, who’s getting a little older, Trey Turner, who’s getting a little older, Zack Wheeler, Erin Nola, but this band has been one of the best periods of time in Philly’s history, and they just didn’t want to break up the band, especially for someone this important to both what they do on the field. And I will not ignore this. There were not this many teams in unless you consider what Kyle Schwarber is off the field as well. Historic contract. This is the largest contract ever extended to a hitter in an age 33 or older season. $50 million. You know, the other thing it tells me real quick and we’ll move on that the Phillies also believe Bryce Harper’s not turning into a DH or you don’t do this deal. Not only do I think he’s not turning into a DH, I would expect that if they found the right first baseman and he may go back to the out like like this is another reminder that the John Middleton Dave Dumbrossski Phillies looked at the poker pot and said, “Yeah, we’re still all in.” Now for the next thing that they’ve got to be pretty excited in Philly to see Edwin Diaz is leaving town in Queens. Yeah. Out of the division. Go ahead, Matt. Yeah. Edwin Diaz to the Dodgers. What’s your gut shot on that? So, if you know, John Haymon and I wrote a story that we posted like less than an hour ago saying the Dodgers are in this big that it was the the Mets competition with the two World Series participants, the Blue Jays and the Dodgers. And you know, once the Dodgers is so fired up, I love it. Once the Dodgers get involved, even when it’s Steve Conn, it is hard to beat the Dodgers. Location, location. Like I once said to Steve Conn when they failed on Yamamoto, you could you could move heaven and earth a lot, but you literally can’t put the Pacific Ocean in the Atlantic Ocean, right? And location matters. Uh this is a team that’s willing to go to the top of the market over and over and over again. I think that I I don’t know what this is. I was able to confirm that this happened. I wonder if they did three years at such a record annual value that even the Mets didn’t want to go there. Boy, those casinos did not arrive fast enough. How How does the Devin Williams play into the Mets not bringing Edwin Diaz back? Do they value him that highly as a closer? I Well, remember David Sterns had Devin Williams in Milwaukee. Knows the player really well. I will say that the Mets are not stopping on we lost Edwin Diaz. I think they’re very much in on Robert Suarez and I think they’re very much into trade talks for example with again with his old team Milwaukee. They’re talking about like Trevor McIll. I’m sure they’re even talking bigger players than that out in the marketplace. The Mets are also not uh we’re surrendering. They see what the Phillies did. They’re not just going to say ah yeah Devin Williams and we’re done because Diaz left. But Diaz also, maybe not to the extent of Schwarber, but Diaz was a good clubhouse guy in a not great clubhouse last year and they lose that as well. He is a he’s known as Sugar and he’s a really sweet guy and I’ll tell you what, the Dodgers have a close the details here. Yeah. Three years. So that would have been that’s I I was comfortable saying that cuz what I we reported cuz what I reported John and I reported is if you remember like when the Dodgers tried to get Bryce Harper in free agency they offered like a three or four year contract with a very very high annual value and said you might be able to find the big money someplace else long but we’ll give you much more a year and then you could go back into free agency again. My suspicion is this is go when we hear the number it will blow away. The record is like 1920 million per year for a reliever. It’s going to start with a two and be much higher than 20 is my gut if they got him for three. You know who’s home among the many saying thank you very much. Robert Suarez is saying good. Let’s go. Let’s hear more about it. Uh Pete Alonzo saying thank you. Good. Let’s hear more about it. And the uh well that’s Matty. I’m sorry I cut you off there. But that’s the thing. The Mets had two players opt out in Alonzo and Diaz and they really really wanted to keep them. And am I right that this is the first time I found this off season interesting because this felt like the off season where there were more players from big markets out in free agency that teams wanted to keep than I ever remember. Part of that was so many guys did deals with opt outs like Alonzo, like Diaz, like Bregman. Four of them, four of them took a qualifying, right? And and and this is the first one that left a team that wanted him and it was the Mets. Like Josh Naylor went back. We have the number. We have the guess. Take a guess on the number. Uh three three7s. 327s. Reveal, guys, cuz I don’t know what it is. We have it. We’ve got the number 369. So it’s 23 a year. So the previous record was was 20ish. It’s deferred. Five at 102 was his last deal, but it wasn’t really that. 199 million in real money for Josh her was the record. So in real money, he just beat it by four million staggering per year. So the Dodgers said, “We’re willing to pay you a lot more per year to come here, but we don’t want to go to that fourth or fifth year. The Mets also were offering three from what I understood and Diaz wanted five for. This is where I’m going to finish my career.” That didn’t happen. Boy, and you got to thank Show Otani for his 2 million again this year. This is amazing, man. This is a so much for the we’re not going to pay closers anymore. We’re going to cobble together matchups at the back of a bullpen. That’s so 2010. Matt, I would remind you of two instances in July. What was given up for Joan Durant? What was given up for Mason Miller? You could tell me one thing. I don’t care what you say. I care what you do. And then we watched the World Series where even the two teams left standing were worried about their bullpen. Yeah. One of those teams was the Dodgers. You know what they just did? Went and got the best relief pitcher on the market because their destination is history. They already have two in a row and they don’t want to stop.

  1. Edwin Diaz is the most overrated closer in baseball and has been for almost all of his career. He has given up massive home run after massive home run. In my opinion the Mets losing him is a win for the Mets and a win for the whole NL East

  2. Edwin Diaz is going to the World Series! Congratulations, Ed! You’re a champ! You don’t even have to get married to get a ring. All you have to do is be on the Dodgers, they’ll get your ring.

  3. Ah phooey! I wanted the Rangers to swoop in out of nowhere and sign Kyle Schwarber! Also even just a closer like Edwin Diaz would be nice. It never had to be him, but just any closer will do. Oh well, I trust Chris Young to get this team exactly what it needs to compete again. Rangersforever❤
