The Dallas Stars are starting to become one of the most balanced teams in the NHL, but head coach Glenn Gooson believes they can get better. How? We’ll hear from him on a variety of topics, including the power play struggles and why the Stars have to maybe reinvent themselves a bit on the man advantage. Jake got a star of the week. We’ll talk about him, his USA chances to be the starting goalender as well come Olympic time. and we’ll preview the win at Peg Jets today as well. Thank you for joining us. But always love to hear from Glenn Gooton and some of the scrums after practice and such. And I I wanted to start with the starts getting better, right? Uh we’ve seen Dallas games 20 through 30 uh I think is usually a segment in a season where you really learn what your team is is going to be, what your team identity is in a lot of ways. And the Stars have been excellent from game 20 to 30. 80 and two in their last 10. They’ve won three straight, 45 points, which is the second most amount of points in franchise history through 30 games in a season. And so they’re doing a lot of good things and the coaching staff of course delivers a lot of credit for what has transpired. Um, and I think getting the Stars back to what they were a couple of seasons ago where they were really stout from the net on out. We knew they could score offensively, but they got really great goalending and defending um along with that a few years ago. And it just feels like it’s a perfect marriage. But Goldston believes there is still some growth even offensively for Dallas, which may come at a surprise. Although you’re a head coach, I I I think you want all head coaches to believe you can get better because it’s not about peaking right now. It’s about peaking in April and so on. But here is coach Goldson on the stars continuing to grow uh defensively and offensively this season. We’re a good defensive team. We’re we’re a good defense. I think we’re we’re a top three defensive team. What we give up top four and um but we we don’t uh offensively there’s room for growth for us. And um what else we got is we got good specialy teams and and good goalies. So when you have three of those things five on five we’re good defensively. So we’re almost just it’s that last piece. can we get a little bit better offensively? Um and um you know that’s what we’re constantly working on. But what I’m finding in that whole big picture is that the better defensively we played, the more structured defensively we played, we actually increase our offense. So, um, we we still need to dial in on a little bit of the offense, but also a little bit of, um, uh, defending a little bit better, especially through the neutral zone with some structure, and it’ll allow us to uh to to play more offense. And and I think if you’re you’re Gulletin, there’s a lot of reasons behind why he feels the the stars can’t can improve. First off, they’re missing a ton of bodies. They just got Duchaine back recently, by the way. There was an update on him. He actually felt good following the game the other night, which uh is is a great sign uh following the Penguins game. So, he was back out to practice. So, it it seems everything is good health-wise there. They’re missing a lot of bodies. Adam Ernie, I know he’s not big offensively, but Aduc Shane. And then defensively, Harley, uh you name it, Bishel now. So many different individuals have have gone down and the stars have been able to to get themselves to this point. 3.4 four zero goals per game. That’s fourth in the NHL. They’ve only allowed 250 goals against per game. That is third in the NHL. And the goalenders deserve a lot of credit for that. But I believe the Stars blue line and defensive structure has also helped elevate some others like Akolio Chon Capo Bienko. Just feels like the system is benefiting this group of stars. Not to make this a point about Dbor, but the knock was on him. He had a system. Did it really matter who the personnel was? They were going to run it this specific way. And whatever Gulletson is doing right now to tailor the system, which he talked about in the offseason to the personnel who they have is is is paying dividends right now. It’s it’s paying off in and in and wins. It’s it’s paying off. and the Stars finding a bit of an identity. I I think recently, especially games 20 through 30 where they’ve won in a variety of ways. And it hasn’t always been easy. This hasn’t just been uh a walk a walk in the park type of first 30 games for Dallas. Um although it may look like that on the outside, um they have they have gone through some some struggles. Um and they have found ways to win um and continue to grow. So, I think that’s uh a really optimistic point from from Golison about the the Stars uh neutral zone and how they can improve there. Especially the the last couple of games. Stars have been a bit a bit loose. Uh I I think maybe some of that just schedule wear and tear. Uh they get to practice a bit more. Uh maybe in the next couple weeks they can iron out some of the the rust it seems like they’ve had, especially in the neutral zone in their giveaways. They were really sloppy with the puck the the other night. Um, some more updates on on injuries before we get to the power play a bit. Uh, uh, Leouchkin is not making the trip to Winnipeg. Harley is. There is potential Harley may get into one of the games, maybe Winnipeg or Minnesota, but he is going to be with the the team. So, that’s a really positive sign that maybe he’s closer than some of us um expected. So, that is a positive sign on the offensive or injury front with Harley joining the the team on this little mini road trip to Winnipeg and Minnesota. Uh, let’s shift gears to the power play. hasn’t looked very good the last couple of games, but I I think Gooson provides a real reasonable expectation or uh reasonable explanation for their struggles and how they have to sort of get through that and get back to what is considered a top five power play in the league. When you’re a top power play and you’ve scored goals, then now these guys coming in, uh they’re looking at you very detailed. you know, in the first 10, 15 games, you know, everybody’s just trying to get their own crap sorted out, right? And now you can go look and see every goal that was scored against, you know, Dallas Star scored on the power play and how they’re entering and then you’re they’re coming in with a game plan. So, it gets tougher as it as it goes along. And, um, that’s why you see regression in in in the power play numbers usually, you know, from game 30 to 60 is, right, teams are really honed in on what your specialty is. So, um, you got to kind of try to keep reinventing yourself a little bit. The Stars are still generating a ton of chances when it comes to their power play. That that hasn’t been the the issue when they get in and they get set up. They are extremely effective. They they move the puck around um extremely well and they create a lot of chances uh on the power play. That really hasn’t been the issue. If you look at their expected goals for number throughout this season, they’re 22.2 on the power play, which is third most in the NHL. So, they they haven’t struggled to generate chances or looks. I think it is the entries that they have really struggled on. They have not been able to get in the offensive zone cleanly and and set up that way. if they win a faceoff and they’re able to spread out and move it around, they they look like the Stars power play has been this season. But the issue that they’re running into, it feels like over the last couple of games has has been those entries and you you heard him mention it there. They have to sort of reinvent themselves. So, um I think that’s something uh to keep an eye out on for the next couple of games from from Dallas, how they uh maybe make some adjustments on their power play entries. a lot of it early. It felt like you saw a lot of Wyatt Johnston kind of flying in. He would kind of make those two passes with a rant in or whatnot and he kind of move it in um with his legs and then kick it out to the left to a Robertson and the Stars would sort of get upset uh get up get set up that way. Um especially against Pittsburgh, the Penguins took away the speed of Johnston and took away that pass to the sidewall. they would jump on it and they were able to steal the puck away and clear. So, there may be some some uh adjustments coming on that side of things. Maybe embrace uh a little dump and chase potentially. I know you don’t want to do that consistently on on the power play, but change up some looks just to keep the uh the penalty kill guessing. Um and I think it’s a reasonable explanation, right? 30 games now of the Stars great power play. every team gets the scouting report uh the day before playing Dallas. They have a top five power play. We will be great. Um we will take away this, we have to do this um in order to to stall them. So, uh they going to have to make adjustments as every team does. Um and and and maybe get back some of that firepower which um has has eluded them here over the past couple of games. Let’s talk about the the great week he had with the Dallas Stars. a perfect 3-0 record. He earned the second start of the week in the NHL. We’ll talk about that and uh some of his chances to be the starting net minder for Team USA come February. We’ll do that in just a moment. Another superb week in between the pipes for the Dallas Stars. Earns the second star of the week behind Ilia Sroken. Now Jay Gotener had better numbers. I saw some Stars fans a bit riled up that he had better numbers. How did he not get the number one star, but to be fair to to Siroken, he did take on Tampa Bay who was leading the division and uh he also took on the Avalanche which ended their their point streak. So, he played some very good competition. Uh not that the Sharks um aren’t great, not that the Devils aren’t great either. U but uh impressive stuff from Sroken. But Andre goes 3-0 and 0.98 goals against average, 961 save percentage, and a shut out as well. He’s won six straight contests dating back to November 20th. He’s a 1.82 goals against average, 934 save percentage over that span. And he also leads the league with 14 wins through his first 20 games this season. Otter maybe starting to to heat up, which is great. And uh I will continue to die on the hill. the stars get above average goalending. They are going to win a ton of games. And of course, it gets you thinking about who will uh lead the USA team come Olympic time here in just uh a few months. Connor Hellabuk was out with an injury. I believe he is supposed to maybe come back before that. Could be totally mistaken uh on that. So, there’s going to be a real discussion. Now, there has been another goalender that has entered the chat a bit. been Jeremy Swayman who um who’s been good for uh who’s been good for for Boston. He had a really down year a season ago, but now now he is back having a strong season um as well. So that is someone to keep an eye out on. But it it’s no doubt that that has put his name firmly in the conversation and has played uh big games as well. Auter ranks 25th in save percentage at 909. um that is over um an entire season and then he ranks in the goals against average 23 um at 2.49. Now Jeremy Swayman has some better overall numbers. You look at his uh fancy stats goal save above expected. Swayman is third in the NHL at 18.8. Aer finds himself at 15th at 9.8. So not very far behind. So, I would be curious to to see how the Swayman conversation sort of him infiltrating him into this space now if that affects uh if that affects in any way. But last season, the Four Nations, it was clearly Hellabuk and Otter. With Hellbuck down, who knows if Winnipeg is really going to want him to compete coming off um an injury. that that is a conversation that probably has to to be had if if the Jets are uh are are going to maybe maybe not allow him is not the the right word, but is is is is Hellec going to just want to ramp back up and play really heated tense games um and they’re quick um in in a short span. Um you’re going to need two net miners anyways if if not three come Olympic time. But I think it right now Jay Cottinger is the number one net minder for team USA. Even if Hlebuck was in the conversation, it may be a hot take, but we’ve seen Otter in the big moments shine and show up. He outduel him in the spring. Jake Goter should be the number one goalender. And I think you can largely throw the whole statistical conversation out of the realm for something like this. It is a three, four game sprint. Uh what six games I guess if you get all the way through the the gold medal. I don’t know the exact schedule, but if you get all the way there, I I I think you have to throw some of the statistical stuff out of uh the conversation. Um although it should matter. Um you don’t want a a guy coming in that’s lacking confidence or has no confidence. Um that shouldn’t be the case. It feels like with Jake and head coach Glen Goldson was asked about this as well. Yeah. Well, I think just like our team and even the Olympic teams, there’s there’s um there’s benefit to having guys pushing each other for sure. Uh there’s benefit because it it makes people better, makes competitors better when they’re getting pushed. So, um, yeah, but you know, I’m biased, so whatever the Canadian media says is going to take it as I’m biased. But, yeah, I would I I would, uh, you know, is my is our guy. You know, I love that he just says is our our guy at the end there. Had to to keep that in at this point. feels like Casey De Smith and Aer could be the the tandem for for team USA without Casey De Smith I is playing which as he sort of pointed out I think actually helps Jakeer in a lot of ways. he’s got a a backup that’s not threatening to take his job by by any means, but when he’s playing at such a high level, I think it’s forced to play well. And let’s face it, Andrew just got the second star of the week in the NHL. Before that, before the week just transpired, Casey de Smith is looking and statistically is the better goalender so far this season. Um, and then Otter kind of comes back and maybe steals the show a bit. So, um it obviously is ironing or iron sharpen ironing. Uh iron sharpens iron. That was an awful uh attempt at the uh the metaphor there, but I I I tried my best. Always struggle with the iron irons uh I guess uh pronunciation back in the day. And obviously I haven’t um improved at all. Uh but Jake’s having a really strong season. Helluck was was great to start the year. um of course with with Winnipeg, but I think his his injury conversation um certainly uh certainly puts um certainly puts uh Jay Coner right in the the thick of things. And if if you’re me, he is the number one goalender for Team USA. I hope he is. Uh I would just be glued to the TV screen uh watching him in that along with uh Jason Robertson who should also be accompanying him to uh to Italy. Um, in a couple of months, uh, Stars are going to have, uh, a lot of participants. Well, Finland’s going to have six or seven guys from the Stars, um, uh, in in a couple months, which will be, um, exciting. But, uh, Otter with another great week. Hopefully, he continues to, um, just improve a bit. We’re expecting big things from Otter, you know, and and if you look at expectations, I don’t think he’s met them this season. Um, but he leads the league in wins. Um, and I know wins isn’t necessarily a a goalender statistic. The stars are great in front of him. Uh, but it’s it it’s not like um it’s not like he should get credit for the wins, too, right? Uh we we blame goalenders a lot. If if they don’t stop Bucks, well, they should they should get rewarded if if they stop them, right? That it is their their job. um overall statistically um it doesn’t jump off the page. Um and maybe he’s just going to be one of those goalenders that that never does, right? Um and he just kind of is is steady. Um the consistency needs to get there. When you look, he’s still really young in a lot of ways. He’s he’s 27. Um he has almost 300 career starts, so he’s getting up there. Uh maybe once he hits that 300 mark, we’ll see him get more consistent and u we can expect that. I I know that’s still a huge knock on on him. Um I haven’t talked about Otter a ton. Um and even when he’s had some struggles here um and maybe it’s a disservice to to the podcast in some ways, but I I kind of have operated this year with I’m just I’m not even going to fuel the fire with the the otter talk. Uh the last two seasons it felt like every couple of days it was is Otter good enough? Is is is he going to be the the guy that can, you know, lead them to the promised land, so to speak? Um and I just I don’t even know if I want to have that conversation anymore. He’s good. He’s He’s actually great. Um like if he w Yeah, he he may not have a Stanley Cup, but there’s a lot of goalenders in the league that don’t either. So um you’re either going to take it or leave it at this point. um you’re either not a fan uh or uh or you’re a big fan. Um it just seems like there’s there’s no in between. Um so that’s sort of my thoughts on on the otter conversation. Um well, there was one I guess uh for you here towards the end of this segment. Let’s get into the Winnipeg Jets. Stars and Jets. Um as Stars get into a couple central division opponents this week. Um, let’s let’s talk about the the Pack where the Stars started their season with a victory. Let’s see if they can keep the hot streak going. We’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by Game Time. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. But let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That’s why the Game Time app is clutch. finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. Swipe, tap, ticket, go with Game Time. Winnipeg Jets uh always a tough out although they are of course with out their their number one guy uh Connor Hellabuk but have done a decent job of uh weathering the the storm I would say since um his departure look they haven’t been great the last 10 36 and one but we’ve always sort of known with with Winnipeg Helabuk is is the guy if Hlebec was not going to be there they were going to struggle. And Eric Comry isn’t the uh most elite backup net minder, right? His numbers have not looked great. 8.98 save percentage and a 3.08 goals against in in 13 games this season. So, um they’ve they’ve sort of dropped off, but that’s to be expected. Um, and I was someone that came into the year not uh expecting Winnipeg to be a good team. Even with Hela Buck, uh- w um it’s it’s sort of proving me right, but not exactly um how I expected it. Uh but they have offensive talent everywhere. Of course, we’ve seen a lot of the Jets with with Shley and Connor. They’re having really strong seasons, too. um despite them struggling to win games. Um it’s kind of being lost in all of it. Shyley and Connor well over a point per game. Um but again it’s sort of one line that’s driving a lot of offense. You have Shley, Connor, Valardi, like those are your guys. Um and again like a Jonathan Taes has nine points this season. asking him to be your two seat was was never going to to solve uh to to solve their their problems. Although I I think TA has actually been good. Um TA is 37. TA is who he is at this point. You you really could not expect him to just kind of slot into your middle six um and be great. They they are just getting no depth scoring to to save their their lives uh right now. That that’s sort of Winnipeg. They kind of have to live and die with the goalending. Uh they’re middle of the pack in goals for, but they’re also middle of the pack um in goals against. They’re exactly even. Uh three goals per game, three goals against per game. They’re just exactly kind of mediocre. Uh I think in in sort of what their power playing penalty kill, right in the middle of the pack, they are just kind of a middling mediocre hockey team right now. 141 13-1 though. Um still sort of in the playoff race. And if if you’re the Jets, you just need to hover around 500 and you can get hellbutt back and you can kind of go on a run, right? That that is um I would think that is sort of the ideal if you’re if you’re uh the Jets right now. They’re coming off a 6-2 loss uh to to Edmonton. Uh Stars took them down 5 to4 in that season opener. So, it’s been uh it’s been a few months. Both of these teams are are very different and um I think Dallas uh should have a really strong night. I I really do. On the road, they have looked amazing away from the AAC this season. They’re the best team on the road this season in the NHL. Their their their style has just translated beautifully. And I I expect a strong night from from from Dallas um on the road. I I think when teams get on the road, they just seem to play better sometimes. Um and it’s been a large back and forth kind of bouncing around for from home and away for Dallas. Um and maybe the last couple of games being at home, it kind of showed that just the schedule intensity and the amount of games that are coming so fast. So maybe get back on the road actually will help them and they’ll sort of snap back into into gear. Hopefully be a lot more crisp. uh as two periods, first two periods sleepwalking a bit against Pittsburgh. Can’t do that against any team, let alone Winnipeg. We know Kyle Connor is just an absolute buzzsaw when he runs into the Stars. Um so you’ve got to find a way to limit them, but if you are able to limit them, you’re going to win. Um Comre is not a likely candidate to to steal you um a game. So I’m thinking a strong 41 victory for Dallas. That’s what I’m feeling. Four to one’s my prediction. Stars get a nice win against a Central Division opponent. And what I’m really looking forward to, which the Stars shouldn’t be looking ahead, but Minnesota, who has just been a smoke show recently, that is going to be a fun game in a couple of nights, but let’s figure out this one here tonight um against Winnipeg. So, that will be a fun matchup. But there’s a little taste of uh of the Jets since the Hlebuck injury. Um, and uh, looking forward to the uh the contest tonight.
