The Winnipeg Jets Have A Goaltending Problem!
Well, I think it’s safe to say that it definitely hasn’t been the year that a lot of Jets fans quite expected coming off of that president’s trophy last year. Uh the Jets are pretty much abysmal and uh especially with the lack of Connor Hobbuk. Obviously, Hlebuck being out with this knee injury and having knee surgery uh and healing right now and you know it looked like he’s he’s on track. You know, he’s getting ready to come back to skate. So, you know, Halleluck could be a couple ways weeks away, you know, come early January, start of the new year kind of thing, which is really good. But, you know, him being out, I think has really opened up a lot of, you know, discussion and discourse about goalending in Winnipeg outside of Hellbuck because, you know, we’ve known for so long that Connor Hobbuk is the backbone of this club. You know, you don’t need to be a knowledgeable Winnipeg Jets fan to know that, you know, without Connor Hlebuck, the Jets really don’t have the success they’ve had the last decade, honestly. Uh, they’ve had some good teams. I’m not taking away from that. But Helabuk is without a doubt one of the greatest goalenders of all time and he’s definitely helped push the Jets to that next level. And with him being out, you know, we’ve seen the struggles. You know, we’ve seen Eric Comry, you know, getting his opportunity pretty much as a starter to shine. And, you know, he has not done that whatsoever. And, you know, this is coming from a guy that I I’ve never been a big Eric Comry fan. I think he’s great in the locker room. I think he’s a great human being. And I think that he has a place on a club, but you know, maybe as a third string guy I’ve always believed. opinion as well as the fact that you know you have a rookie Thomas Militch getting called up from the Matamoose. Uh this guy again like do I want to see Thomas Militch? Do I have a lot of faith in him get some opportunity? Yeah. But like at the same time Domen just got just got called up as well cuz they sent Militch down because they didn’t have a lot of faith in him. So you know again and I like Dom Dvenenzes. You know this is a guy that has been pretty you know I’ve I’ve liked in the system for a long time. I’ve liked him in the prospect tournaments. He’s looked good. He’s had his moments. Uh you know he’s been pretty decent so far with the move so far. And again, I like that the Jets are giving the prospects an opportunity with Hella Buck being out because they really don’t get much looks anyway. Like, you know, Comry doesn’t get many looks with Hell Buck healthy. So, I do like that they’re going with these younger guys, but it still brings up the issues that goending for the Jets in that backup category without Hellbuck, it’s not good at all. Now, again, the team is not playing great hockey in front of them, and I’m not trying to say that the Jets suck because of Eric Comry, Thomas Militch, and you know, splitting the load and whatnot. I’m not putting saying that whatsoever. But, they definitely haven’t been good either. They haven’t been able to bail out the team at times and make those important saves. And they’ve had some really stinker games. And I think the reason why I wanted to really talk about this and look at this deeper even with Hellob coming back is the fact that, you know, Hellbuck’s going to be coming off of a major injury. You know, the Olympics are going to be coming around. He’s probably going to be, you know, not at he’s not going to I don’t I don’t expect to see Hellbuck play that many games coming in. I still expect to see a lot of the workload being taken by Comry and potentially even another young backup, you know, with him coming back from injury. It’s going to be a slow thing. There’s no way that this organization is going to risk rushing Connor Hellbook after an injury like this. You know, there’s a reason why they even wanted him to go now and take it before waiting until anything got h got worse or whatnot. Like at the same time, you know, like that’s what that’s that’s made the right call there. I’m not trying to say that. But at the same time, like what I’m trying to say is that Comry is not the guy that you want having to pick up those extra workloads. You know, Comry’s always been that guy that, you know, a couple games here and there, you know, it’s whatever. He can manage it. The team seems to it’s a challenge for the team. they have to play tighter defense and I’ I’ve liked that. But this year with the team being looser defensively, not as strong uh with the forward core, the lack of scoring, the lack of speed and consistent defensive play, you know, and the turnovers especially, it we’re just leaving these guys out to dry and that’s just going to cause us to lose even more games. So, if the Jets for any reason are hoping out that they can still try to get into a playoff hunt, make a wild card, maybe surprise and whatnot, they’re going to go have to seriously look at their goalending situation because again, like I liked Thomas Milch. I was really excited to see him get his debut, right? And I’m excited to see Dom hopefully get a game as well uh before Taliba comes back and is fully healthy. But, you know, like again, like I’m just going to come out and say it even though Dom necessarily didn’t blow me away and he wasn’t anything spectacular. He, you know, like again, he lost all the games he played in if I’m not mistaken. Um, I still would rather see Dumb and Dominic Dvenenzis and Thomas Militch spit a workload than see Eric Comry get games because Eric Comry is just he’s not the guy for the future. He’s not the guy that matters. He’s just he’s just Conor Hellbuk’s friend. That’s all he really is at this point. And he’s not a substantial real differencemaker goalender and he’s not a reliable backup whatsoever. So, at least if you give these two young guys a chance, maybe we get to see something. Maybe they have some, you know, maybe they got more to offer than Eric Comry. But even then, I still don’t have that much faith because, you know, you can’t just throw goalenders into the NHL level, especially with a crap defensive team like that on not a good team and expect them to succeed. You know, Connor Hellbuck even wasn’t that good back in the day. The Jets had to bring Steve Mason in to hopefully, you know, motivate Hellbuck to play better and earn that starter spot. The Jets didn’t even have faith in him going into that 2018 171 18 season. So, you know, you can’t do that with these younger guys. And I I like I said, I like Milich. I think that he could be a NHL backup for this club. I think that Dominic Deven Chendis could be a backup for this club in the future as well. Um, but throwing them into the Wolves right now, it just as much as I would like to see that for the development, it’s just not going to really push make the move the needle anywhere because their team, they’re just going to lose and the team’s not going to play well in front of them like we’ve already seen, you know, so far this entire season. And that brings me to this whole point of this video is that I think that the Jets desperately when they’re looking at fixing this team along with all the other issues up front, the speed and whatnot, I think the Jets seriously need to look at acquiring a legit backup goalender. You know, like I don’t know why we’ve ever like when we lost Lauren Bwis and we went back to Comry that always felt like such a downgrade and you want to have a reliable backup and you never come playoff time, do you really want to count on Eric Comry in case you know Connor Hellbick went down with an injury, god forbid. So, you know, I talked about this earlier last week in a short about Lauren Bruis potentially coming back to Winnipeg because again, I don’t think that the Jets should have ever let Bruis leave in the first place. Obviously, the injury and whatnot. Kind of worked out well for them in hindsight, but at the same time, you know, this is a guy that won the Jennings with Hellbuck and had a fantastic year and has been nothing but incredible every year he’s been in Winnipeg. So, I just don’t understand why the Jets keep choosing to have mediocre backup goalenders after having good ones and they just let them go because I I know having hella buck is important, but you do not want to rely on an Eric Comry come playoff time and we’ve seen what he can do in the regular season. So, I’m hoping that when Chevy looks at this entire team with all the situ the decisions that need to be made on how to improve this club and get them back to a winning record. Obviously, goalending isn’t at the top of the list, but I definitely think that it’s time that we start to really consider having a solid backup goalender. Because if Hella is getting older, if injuries and conditioning is something that we’re going to have to worry about in the later part of his career, then having a backup goalender that can actually play and be reliable and counted on is important. And Eric Comry is not that guy. And at this point in their careers, Dominic Deanchenzis and Thomas Militch are not those guys either. So with Hellabuk hopefully coming back like I said by early January second you know mid January potentially you know right before that Olympic break coming in February I think that you know that’s probably that hopefully that’ll push the Jets in the right direction but like I said earlier they are going to probably not play Hellbuck that much. He’s going to have you know get eased into it. So we’re going to see more comry than we’ve seen in years past. And so far that has not been good especially with the defense in front of them. So, like I said, I just hope that when the time comes, the management actually looks at acquiring a legit, you know, tandem because even though Hella Buck’s hella buck, you know, with the goalenders getting up in age, you need a capable backup and not just some scrub that is friends of the goalender. So, let me know your thoughts down in the comment section below if you think that I’m tripping or if you think this is at the bottom of the list of priorities. Milic didn't get sent down because they didn't trust him. He was sent down, because they had already planned to bring up both goalies.
We can't win also if we don't score. No offensive depth, no pressure , no quality chances. Most of our wins last few seasons was Helly stealing games for us.
I won’t lie, I really miss Laurent Brossoit. :/ I’m also very shocked and even confused to learn that the Hawks sent him down to the AHL… When I became a new fan of the Jets a few years back, I saw he was listed as the backup for the team as I was getting familiar with the player list at the time, and whenever I saw him play, he looked incredible in the net. I loved his performance.
When I first saw how Comrie came back into the Jets, being previously in there. (Wasn’t a fan yet at the time when he first played for the team.) I saw a lot of people commenting on how they weren’t happy about him and yeah… Even I wasn’t happy overtime as I saw him play. I mean sure he’s had his good moments but he certainly was no Brosswall as I’ve seen people affectionately called Laurent… :c
Holding on to hope that the team gets back up on their feet again and kick some serious butt out there.
PanicInThePeg 😂
Comrie is only on the Jets because of the business relationship between the Birchwood group and the Brick.
Good goalies aren’t cheap , Cheap goalies aren’t good.
Gavin Mckenna is going to be a very interesting Winnipeg Jet
No they have a scoring and defending problem. When 80% of your scoring comes from one line, you won't be a playoff team.
Oldest and slowest team in the league, no back check, getting beaten clean on the rush. Time to tank for McKenna.
Anyone blaming the goalies is nuts when the people in front of them couldn't score on a high school hockey team!!
So who are we developing next for a goalie? Helly for two maybe three years. Won’t blame if he wants to be traded to a playoff team. Chevy isn’t going it. Fire his ass already.
