Trying to shake their 3RD QUARTER STRUGGLES! – Locked On Philadelphia 76ers

Welcome into another thrilling edition of Locked On 76ers. He’s Keith Pompei. I’m Mark Farzetta. 76ers of course take the loss to the LA Lakers. And in that loss, we didn’t get into it yesterday. We’ll talk about it today. Third quarter struggles for your 1098 76ers. Just continue this season. We’ll break down the why on this edition of Locked on 76ers. You are Locked On 76ers, your daily Philadelphia 76ers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. And we do thank you for making Locked on 76ers your first listen every day. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network out there. Once again, Keith Pompei and Mark Farzetta with you today to break down all things 76ers. We’re also getting get into little layoff here. The Sixers have Sunday game. Then they don’t play again till Friday. We’ll get into that one against the Pacers. And then Jared McCain, how he finds his way through it all. But Keith, if there is something we could put on repeat this season when it comes to the Sixers, it is how much they hit a wall coming out of halftime. No matter how good they play in the first half, no matter how good they play in the second quarter even, they go into halftime and they run into a wall. And this time it was a 10point differential, which is right around their average in terms of what they lose the third quarter by. Keith, you break it all down, you talk to the people involved. Why is there such a constant problem in that third quarter? You know, that’s the biggest question. Like and I don’t even think they know like personally I what I what I think is I think that uh I mean like let me just go what Drummond was saying. Drummond was saying hey maybe we need to come out earlier right come in earlier get in the layup line get right you know get everything motivated do a lot of different things. Um but you know to me it just seems like when we look at it at least couple times I noticed that the ball has been a little stagnant at times. Um you know I see the ball doesn’t swing as much. I see that guys are taking bad shots. The other teams, their bad shots leads to a lot of transition baskets or transition opportunities on the other end. Now, the thing to me is, you know, Joelle and and Tyrese were talking after the last game and and and Tyrese shared that and he said Joel said to him like, “Look, you know, you got to, you know, we got to do this. We got to step up.” Tyrese is saying, “I gotta get more people involved.” No, I I want you to score the points. I want you to attack. I want you to be aggressive. Now, the problem to me, Mark, is the 76ers need a point guard. like they need and and he doesn’t have to be a starting point guard, but they need a traditional point guard on their roster who’s going to help them in these type of opportunities to make to make sure that the ball moves to make sure that guys get easier looks at the basket, right? So, you say to yourself, “Oh, well, they have one. You have Kyle Lowry, right?” But then when we look at it, you say to yourself, well, Kyle’s in his 20th season. He’s going to be 40 in March. Right now, he’s more of a a player, coach, mentor than he is someone who’s going to make an impact on the floor. So, the next option you say is, well, at the third quarter, I need Paul George orchestrating stuff, seeing if he can set people up. If not, the 76ers are going to have to probably make a trade. And I’m pretty sure they’re they’re trying to hold off and they’re trying to do all this because they have some other roster situations that they have to take off take care of with the two-way players just moving them up. But unless you get these people involved and and do better in the third quarter, things are about to fall apart for the 76ers with a tougher schedule. So they need to do something, man. And it’s like right now it just seems like you’re right, it just crumbles in that third quarter. Well, here here’s the suggestions I’ve I’ve heard. You mentioned the one from Andre Drummond. He wrote a great piece, by the way, about this on inquire.com today that people should check out. Thank you, Andre. Absolutely. Andre Drummond talked about coming out getting the layup line. Okay. All right. I like it. A couple weeks ago when it was when this was still a problem, as we’ve said, it’s been a problem all season. Nick Nurse is like, “Maybe we just don’t go into halftime. Maybe we just stay out there on the court. And I’m like, I every these are all desperate answers, but it’s desperate times, desperate measures. Let’s circle back to the Kyle Lowry conversation. I know he’s just Coach Lowry, but can coach Lowry act like he’s playing in a pickup game for like two minutes every third quarter just to stop the boat from rocking? Maybe he comes out there and just said, “All right, we’re going to slow it down. We’re going to take things at a time and we’re going to make sure that we can execute a good play or two to start things off. Everything else after that just is like, “All right, uh, Maxi, take somebody off the dribble.” I don’t know. Cuz everything else just seems like it’s falling apart. Do Do you recommend a slower style or do you recommend something just absolutely uh, I’ll say basswards when it comes to solving this problem? H man, it is it you know I I I recommend that these dudes are making a lot of money and they got to take seriously. You know what I mean? Like I mean when we when we talk about this like you know this reminds me of when I covered Coastal Carolina football and their and their football coach’s name was Dave Bennett at the time and and he was a dude I don’t know if you heard the sound bite, you know, I want some dogs. I want some dogs, right? A bunch of cats. Meow. Meow. That was him, right? He was crazy. But the thing that got me with him was was kind of like at halftime he never went into the locker room. He would now this is a a college football team. They were like a onea team at the time. And what they would do is he would go over to the sidelines to the corner and basically have them around him. They had water bottles and he’s up there talking to him, right? And he did it yesterday. So I and they it was really bizarre. So when you hear Nick Nurse say that, you’re like, “Nah, bro. You don’t want to do that in the NBA.” But at the same time, you shouldn’t have to tell people that they need to get motivated to play to play the right way in the second half. Like, you just shouldn’t. I mean, you know, we’re talking about a team with three Max players. We’re talking about a team with all these veterans. And for you guys to act like is the, you know, the GLeague Ignite playing in the NBA and you can’t get motivated, that’s not good, you know. So, yeah, do you need a point guard to help out? Yeah, probably. Right. So, but then that goes back to how did you construct this roster, right? If you got all these combos, right? and and then you know and and and then what’s really going on is that you know the ball stops swinging in that quarter but then in the fourth quarter when everything’s down you start playing the right way again. So to me, you know, unfortunately, and Nick Nurse probably doesn’t want to hear this, but when I see a team repeatedly can struggles in the third quarter, you have to put it on the coaching. You have to Yeah. Because it’s like, how are you getting them? And then I know like he switched it up starting Justin uh uh uh uh no no Quinton Grimes in the third quarter and doing things like that but man it’s it’s like it has to fall on the coach to not be able to have your team ready at the start of third quarters on a daily on a daily basis. Uh so we’ve mentioned Kyle Lowry once or twice already. Um, look, you talk about guys getting paid money and I again, I’ll go back to the coach Lowry thing and I know he whispers sweet nothings into Tyrese Maxis’s ear from time to time and he’s a great leader there and he Maxi even takes his leadership cues from Kyle Lowry. Is there any chance you see what a 39year-old Kyle Lowry get a couple of minutes to go back to that theory, get a couple of minutes as the start of the third if this does continue? You know, it’s weird because I mean I I I think it’s unless they do anything else, I think they may have to use that as an option, right? But it’s it’s weird to me because when we look at Kyle, you know, the first two games he played against were the Brooklyn Nets and then he played against Milwaukee and everyone raved over the leadership that he had. now, but for the most part, it was like he would bring the ball up or he would get the ball and then he would go over to the side and direct the offense, right? And he’s telling them what to do, right? Um, my only question is, you know, that was good against those teams, but when they get into the meat of the order, you know, you can’t like have somebody just on the floor but directing like because then what’s going to happen is they’re going to leave that person. Now, if he can make the shot and you swing it to him, then that works out. But aside from that, they’re going to sag off of him and you’re going to be essentially playing one dude telling you what to do, four guys against five, right? So to me, you can get caught that way. Now, one thing I will say is that Kyle is out there busting his tail. Like you go in the arena four o’clock every day. You get there, Kyle’s already like lthered up, getting up shots, doing a lot of stuff, putting a lot of time in in there. But, you know, I think if if you got to rely on him and you want him to be your player coach, so to speak, then you got problems at this particular, you know, you got problems because because this is a a major thing that they have to control. Now, to me, I’m just going to say this, and I know Nick Nurse was getting uh critical, criticized for it, but you know, there were certain things that they did in that second quarter, the start of the second quarter, and we’ll that they did not do in the third quarter, like personnel um uh rotation things like, and we’ll talk about Jared McCain later, but Jared McCain wasn’t out there, but he was out there in the in the in the in the second quarter when they really needed him. So, you know, it it’s just I understand why he wasn’t, but at the same time, when he’s a guy who’s providing offense, when he’s a guy who you’ve had in certain games, when Maxi was on the floor or off the floor, you put the ball in his hands and had him running the offense. So, maybe he could fulfill that role. You know, who knows? Look, I’ll tell you what the the answer I’m rooting for here in all of it is Tyrese Maxi just figures it out. like Tyres back says, “All right, get guys, first five minutes of the third quarter when we’re bumping all over the place and we’re terrible or we’re it’s a rocky road. Just get on my back and here we go.” Like, I’d love for that to be the answer, but we’re now more than 20 games into the season. 23 games actually into the season and hasn’t happened yet. Hasn’t happened yet. Uh here’s what the Sixers do have. Some time to figure it out. Now, that didn’t work out so well for the Eagles. They had extended time. It didn’t work out for them against the Chargers in Monday football, but the Sixers now have some time off Sunday to Friday. We’ll talk about the schedule this week and uh if that lends to correcting some of these mistakes coming up against the Pacers on Friday night. We’ll talk about that and more when we return. This is Locked on 76ers and Locked on Sixers YouTube channel back after this. Sunday off till Friday. They got the Pacers coming up on Friday night. That’s going to be a 7:00 tip off um in Indiana or excuse me, in South Philadelphia rather. They’re a 6 and18 club leading through this week. What’s on tap for the 76ers practice-wise, treatment wise? What are the Sixers looking at? Ma’am, yesterday they had a an an off off day. Today it was one of those things where um I was hearing it would possibly be could be, you know, one of those things where guys it’s optional where they can come in, right? And if and if so and optionals, you know, they just come like, you know, it’s not going to be an official practice. So, you know, you know, guys just come in and do whatever. They don’t have meet them. Now, here’s the thing with optional. Typically the only thing when optionals the people who don’t show up are like the star players like maybe a Joel Embiid or Paul Paul George Tyrese Maxi but Maxi’s the type of guy you know who’s always in there. So even though it’s optional it’s like if you’re if you’re not the star you better bring your butt in there and work out like you better get it done. So I think that you know they’ll probably what’s tomorrow is Wednesday. They may have something on Wednesday that definitely will practice Thursday for the game, but then I also expect them after this, you know, take a couple more days off before they, you know, head to uh the New York Knicks uh next week. So, next, I believe it’s next Friday. So, yeah, it it’s uh I think they’re honestly it’s two ways of looking at this. You know, the 76ers felt like they’ve been playing better, right? and they have, but again, they’ve only defeated three teams with a winning record. And these wins that they had, they looked pretty good at. They were underman teams who were banged up, you know, or who were struggling, right? Um, so when I look at it, this is good for the 76ers now. And the reason being is, you know, you you it’s going to you’re resting while Kelly Ubé is is uh you’re not, you know, is is working on his way back. Um that Joel Embiid can rest those knees. You know, Paul George could get some treatment on his knee. you know, um, you know, Tyrese Maxi, he was complaining, not really complaining, but it was mentioned that he had a shoulder little thing going on, so he can rest up that way. So, I feel like the 76ers and as much as Nick Nurse and and uh, everyone kept saying that Joel Embiid and and Paul George were full participants at practice. Maxi mentioned on two different occasions that they have yet to have a practice like where every where those guys were out there like everyone was out there, right? So, with that being said, it’s kind of sort of like this is the time to get those get those reps in and you know, as Donald said, yeah, they do miss Kelly. They miss Kelly Ubé. So, they got to try to, you know, hope that and see if they can get him back next week. Okay. Yeah. I was just going to ask you for a follow up on that. I know we’ll get to some of the other injuries a little bit later, but I did see Kelly Ubé sitting there on the bench against the Lakers or during the Lakers game, I should say. What is is there any status update with Kelly Ubé because it’s been more than two weeks. Yeah, so it was one of those things where and then he he talked about it uh after a game last week um that is and and they said, you know, he he went to uh get, you know, got re got evaluated by the doctor. they want him to come back for another evaluation early this week. So, I’m assuming that’s, you know, maybe it was it was today, it could be tomorrow, could have been yesterday. Um, but but the way that it seems like everything was trending the right way. So, I don’t unless there’s a setback or whatever, I don’t expect to be that wrong that long. But the one thing is he does need to get some practice in because for the most part when you talk to him, he says he’s been doing a lot of upper body stuff, right? So he’s been like weight training, doing some other things. So before he, you know, do that return to play, you do want him to have at least a couple practices, especially one practice that is hard to see what his conditioning is and how he goes and then see how the knee responds the next day. So, you know what it is? It’s is trending the right way, but I just do think that they still got to go through the proper steps. Here’s what the Sixers are looking at again. Friday night, they play against the Indiana Pacers at home, 7:00 tip off. Then Sunday, they’re at Atlanta. Friday, they’re at New York. Then that’s the first leg of a back-toback because they’re right back home against Coper Flag and the Dallas Mavericks. Saturday night at 7 o’clock. So, it is a bit of a packed schedule here for the Sixers. They got a bit of a down game, if you want to call it that, against the Brooklyn Nets. Then at Chicago, and they’ve been struggling. Then at Oklahoma City, at Memphis, at Dallas, at Knicks, again, that that takes you all the way to January 3rd. So, this run here for the Sixers, um, a bit of a tough one. And even after that, they got Denver and then Washington, then Orlando, then Toronto again. Unrelenting for a while there, unfortunately. And they have Toronto on backto backs. And then who do they have after that? Then they have uh Cleveland on backs. Cleveland on back to backs. And the thing is, well, Cleveland, they play them two in a row. They have the two in a row. But yeah, two, but they’re both at home, right? Or they’re on the road or they’re at home or both at home. Both. Yeah, they host the the Cavs both nights. And and here’s the thing about that. We talk about that schedule. So when we look at Cleveland, um you know, Cleveland is a team that’s been struggling, right? But they’re also a team that you’re saying to yourself, they’re kind of like how the 76ers were last year where you look at them from afar and you say, “Okay, they’ll get everything together until they won’t.” Right? So, it’s still early. So, we’re looking at it like last time they played the Sixers, they both raced them, right? So, what are they going to do to the Sixers now? And then you look at you look at uh Chicago and Chicago came down to earth, but they were a matchup problem for the 76ers, right? So you look at that now the Sixers, oh man, that’s when they really screwed up in the third quarter. Remember, they were crushing them and then they came back. So to them, you’re saying to yourself, “Yeah, it looks like that’s going to be an easy match, but at the same time, it’s one of those things where, you know, they beat the Sixers before, so let’s see how that works out.” Yeah, the um that Chicago Bulls game, that was terrible. Bulls, by the way, have dropped eight of their last 10 games. That’s where they are right now. And yeah, the Sixers started struggling in that third quarter. They got outscored by only eight points, but I remember the Bulls went on a run at the end of that quarter and then in the fourth quarter, complete and utter domination. 29-6, they outscored the Sixers in that final frame. When we come back, we’ll take a look at Jared McCain and how he could potentially get back into the swing of things with some other guys getting healthy. Again, we’re seeing Jared McCain play well, but not play as long. We’ll talk about that when we return. This is Locked on 76ers and Locked on Sixers YouTube channel. Felt like Jared McCain was certainly, as I said before the break, getting into the swing of things with the 76ers starting to get things going again. And then all of a sudden that started to go away and the minutes go away as Paul George, Joel Embiid find their way back into this lineup. What does the near what does the near future hold for Jiren McCain? That’s a great question, man, because you know, you would think like, you know, Nick Nurse was asked about Jared McCain not playing in the third quarter, right? So, and he said, you know, well, you know, we looked at it and they were bigger. Bas I’m paraphrasing that Jared was small like his size that he would get he would get attacked a little bit on the defensive end. So when you but the bigger question is when you say the near future it’s like well you know right now they look at it you see Quinton Grimes you feel like he can do some of the things that Jarrett can do in regards to shooting the ball you know handling a little bit and and and getting to uh you know getting to spots and hitting the three. But now you bringing back Paul George and Joel Embiid are playing more minutes. And then next thing you know what that does is it takes away from Jared’s minutes. And the thing is as much as everyone says, “Yeah, but Jared McCain is being productive.” True, but are you not going to play Joel? Are you not going to play Paul? When when these two guys are making over $50 million a year, you know what I mean? And so I feel like, you know, right now it’s it it is uh putting Nick Nurse and and the rest of the coaches in a in a tough situation because you know Jared he has shown that he he can do certain things but at the same time he is also because if you go to that you want to play the other guys. So what you’re going to do is you’re going to go to a three guard lineup or you possibly may go to a four guard lineup. I doubt that. But what the problem is Jarrett is like they hide him in the back a little bit when they do that but then guys are attacking him. So that’s the problem and and you want to play these other two guys but when we see those other two guys talking about Joel miss shots and PG gets lost a little bit in the offense right and all of a sudden you’re saying to yourself what are they doing? Why are they out there and how come you’re not playing Jared McCain? But deep down inside, you got to play the two max player dudes. You just have to, you know, it just you just have to un unless they go totally things go totally left. So, when you ask that question, it’s a great one. But I don’t really know the answer to it because these two guys are coming back. Now, there will be nights where PG is is going to sit out, Embiid is going to sit out. I think that with those nights we’ll see Jared McCain log more minutes. But the problem is though, what happens when Kelly Ubé comes back? What happens when Trendan Waford comes back? You know what I mean? Because that’s going to cut into his minutes as well. Keith, always a pleasure catching up talking all sixers with you all the time. 1. Getting Josh Harris to start paying Luxury Taxes is the biggest longer term problem with the Sixers.
It is almost 20 M between the Luxury Tax Threshold and the 2nd Apron.
Morey/Harris got a break by having Grimes accept about 10 M less than he's worth and not being upset about it.
But right now, there should be a few minor moves that could increase the team salary by about 5 M if Morey is allowed.

  2. Embid and PG have negative trade value. Nobody is going to rescue the 76ers from these disastrous contracts. The starting point should be to fire everyone who was involved in these horrible contracts. Embid and PG were washed up before they signed those contracts.

  3. Joel Embiid is shooting 21.4% from 3 pt (9/42), yet there is no hope at this time to change Nick Nurse's defense of Embiid shooting the ball from outside.
And I just checked both Grok and ChatGPT and it appears Joel has ZERO dunks in his 9 games.

Although I don't expect Keith to make an enemy of Nick Nurse, he can point out that Joel has Zero dunks and is shooting 21.4% from 3 pt.
Does Joel still have a health problem jumping? He still isn't doing tip-offs (defers to Barlow) so I assume the answer is YES, Joel is trying to avoid jumping.

What Keith and other members of the media can do, is have headlines questioning whether Joel should accept a LESSER ROLE on the team. Joel for his part is saying he was near his MVP level. That is the WRONG attitude, as you guys pointed out last week, but didn't provide a solution.

I accept that as long as Joel can move around as he did in this last game, its hopeless to expect him not to start games, without Joel being pissed off with the team.
But if PG is playing, at least its possible to have Joel come off the bench in the miserable Q3.
I would have PG and VJ start Q3 and have Grimes be on the on ball point guard. Ask all 3 to be aggressive on offense.
Drummond or Bona start Q3, depending on the situation.
Give Maxey a break, but at about 5 minutes in, let Maxey come in and be aggressive if scoring is a problem.

  4. In back to back games we have had Andre Drumomd in the corner teying to dribble to the rim. 4 other players standing around watching him struggle sums up this team under pressure.

  5. Regarding PG and Kyle Lowry. Its about time that the media tell the fans the truth – He's only on the roster so he can collect a 3.63 M end of career bonus, for how he helped Nick Nurse in Toronto. Clearly Josh Harris had to sign-off on this decision.

I can accept that Lowry was also signed as security (McCain was expected to be on the injury list to start season) at the Point Guard position.
But now McCain is healthy and Grimes has proven he can create many assists with his passing, and Maxey is having his best season in the assist department.
McCain, if asked to be a pass first PG, should be able to replace the Lowry roll. However, McCain (possibly at direction of Nurse) is taking looking for his own shot too much.

The up to 2.3 M question is whether there has been an agreed upon plan to waive Lowry at some point, so that he can keep his 3.63 M and then become a full time Asst. Coach for Nick Nurse? That would open up a roster spot, but we don't know who might be available to fill that spot. So there is no need to execute the plan until a player becomes available (eg someone who can get out of their Euroleague contract).

Since Barlow has 3 years of NBA experience, he would add 2.3 M to the Salary Cap, Apron and Luxury Tax, in order to offer a standard NBA contract.
A decision on Walker can be made after the trade deadline.

  6. Where’s ish Smith he would is a much 😂 I’m Serious 🤔 HOW ANOUT my re go get the best PG im the G-league or the absolute best PG over seas. Cmon I can’t be that hard to find, Where is Morey, he is horrible

  7. The owner is a moron. The GM is an idiot. The head coach is a clown, a joke. The star players want to sit on their asses and collect their NBA welfare checks. F U C K the 76ers.

  8. Marc: What a player is making should be irrelevant to how much playing time a coach gives them. Its only relevant to Morey, as far as trade value, etc. is.
No one is telling Nick Nurse not start Dom Barlow, because he is still a freebee as far as counting Zero to the Salary Cap, Apron and Luxury Tax.

The truth is that Nick Nurse is afraid to upset Joel Embiid and so are every member of the media right now. And you guys won't make an enemy of Nick Nurse either, after he continues to support Embiid settling for 3 pt shots and fading turn around jumpers, instead of attacking the basket and putting more energy into playing defense.

Nurse said the other day that Joel told him he felt he was in a groove and asked for a longer run. Nurse conceded and I believe it contributed to a loss.

Regarding the other undeserved max contract, Paul George, his problems are different from Joel. PG doesn't complain about watching his minutes. His problem is that he often takes too FEW shots (only 3 shots after 1st quarter vs LAL.
I would start PG and not Joel in Q3 of games, and tough if Joel doesn't like it!!
