[Charania] Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II will undergo season-ending right foot procedure to address lingering discomfort, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon. Lively, who played 7 games this season, is expected to make a full recovery.

  5. Lively out for the season and we’re actively shopping AD and Gafford? Yeah we’re cooked.

  6. Knew it was coming. Still hurts the same. Lower body injuries piling up on a 7-footer that relies on his athleticism and mobility – not a good sign. No idea what his ceiling is now.

  8. This sucks. But…..hopefully this is like a Tyson Chanlder situation. Plagued early on by injuries but showed big flashes. Was able to sort it out with surgery and then became a dominant defensive fixture for a 4-5 year run.

  13. Pain… He’s such a good kid. I really hope we can get him on a discount and he can come back and live up to his potential.

    Really really hard to project him as a future building block after this though.

  18. Going to be one of the great “what could have been” career arcs. Love the guy, hate that he’s made of glass.

  20. This is the season to do it. Let’s just hope this completely helps fix that foot and he can properly play without a worry next season. Gonna miss seeing this year though

  24. This dude is the real Mr. Glass. 3 whole years, the Mavs have limited and babied his minutes even when he was ‘healthy’ and he still ends up done after just 7 games. Hope the best for his career but man they should put him as part of the AD package in hopes of getting a better offer. Don’t want to but it’s for the best imo.

    Cooper’s timeline need to be surrounded by not only youth, but also full time contributors, no more part timers. This org is done waiting on players. We need them to grow along side Cooper(on the court) now and the immediate future imo.

  25. I mean hopefully the surgery helps him totally get right but I’m not optimistic. We’ve seen this story with 7 footers too often

  28. He is my favourite Mavs player. Too bad he turned out to be an extremely injury prone player. He might not even see the court again. The good news is that if he became somehow healthy later on the Mavs could extend him for cheap as a fully healthy Lively is an all defense type of player and would have commended a premium.

  29. I remember on draft night I was pumped Cason Wallace was available and disappointed we took Lively. Fell in love with his game and him as a person his rookie year and chalked it up to being wrong.

    Now. I’m sure we offer an extension, but I’ll be very interested in the years and amount.

  30. What this tells me is Dereck’s foot wants a higher draft pick next year to play alongside him and Cooper.

  31. This is why it’s hard to for us to make the decision to trade gafford. Lively isn’t a garuntee, we can’t lose another center and be left with a Powell/Cisse level player getting the minutes behind an injury prone AD.
