A 39 Year Old Geologist Served as the San Jose Sharks Back Up Goalie Against the Philadelphia Flyers

Imagine being 39 years old and just working your day job as a geologist thinking that your hockey career is dead and then all of a sudden you get a call saying that an NHL team needs you that night to be their backup goalender. Well, that is exactly what happened last night Philadelphia for a man named Justin Kowalski. I took hockey every single day to make sure you fall so you don’t miss anything. But if you miss it yesterday, the San Jose Sharks played in Philadelphia and they were supposed to have Yarlaw of Ascarov back up Alex Nadulkovich, but Ascarov got sick and he was not able to be a backup. So, they had to sign emergency backup goender Justin Kowalsski. And you must be thinking to yourself, “Oh, this guy must have been a professional goalie at some point. That’s why he’s the Ebug for Philadelphia.” Well, you would actually be wrong. The highest level of hockey he ever played was for Colgate University in 2004 through 2008. And then now he only plays recreationally. The other really cool thing about the story is this is actually not the first time that he’s ever sat on an NHL bench because in the 2018 2019 season, he was actually the backup goalender for the Detroit Red Wings whenever they were in Philly. I always love these stories so much. They are always super fascinating to me and it’s always super cool to see people living their childhood dreams. And obviously you can’t talk about any of these situations without bringing out the David Ays game back in 2020 for the Toronto Maple Leafs. That game spawned so many legendary hockey memes. But let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I think he actually backed up a few more or was called in a few more times. He has an interview on the San Jose page. I actually have video of his rookie lap last night too. Very cool to see
