Another player off the market the Pirates couldn't sign.

Welp. Who is next on the “we tried” list?
Yeesh. Murakami at this point?
I’m begging for a Ketel Marte trade and an Okamoto signing
I was pretty certain Alonso would get 6+ years and $185+ million honestly. Idk, maybe I’m too aggressively comparing it directly to Schwarber which in itself was a bit of an exception and overpay.
I was adamant that the Pirates should have just rerouted their offer to Schwarber to Alonso, but you could have said the same exact thing about the Orioles because they offered 5×150 for Schwarber and that’s exactly what they did.
I would have been willing to go 5 years for Alonso but I still bet he would have taken the Orioles over the Pirates.
Opens the Orioles up for a few players who are likely out of the lineup now. Coby Mayo, Westburg, and Adley feel like one of them has to be the odd guy out. Maybe a Harrington for Mayo swap?
Polar bears are notoriously picky eaters. They don’t like primanti sandwiches 🥪
this certainly hurts the chances of the pirates signing him
Who else is excited for “Nick Yorke, platoon First baseman”?
At what point are the suckers going to allow us to point out that Nutting isn’t signing any of these guys without calling us ‘complainers’
I was willing to be optimistic about 125/4 for Schwarber. But this was a less valuable player at a higher price. Moving on.
I think Suarez and Okamoto are still interesting.
LMAO another one.
This was definitely more of a long shot, but still sad
Oh well, if they end this winter with Okamoto and Lowe and then one of Marte/Polanco I’ll still be happy
John Nogowski it is, then
Pretty sure these players all want to go to contenders, so despite what the Pirates offer, they have already made their mind up that they aren’t going to go to Pittsburgh. Bob can say he tried, but we all know that the players make their own decision in the end.
There was really no indication that they were even in on Alonso but that won’t stop people from acting like this was an L.
If youre paying attention its clear they want a lefty hitter due to the park, which Alonso isn’t.
But whatever meme away guys.
Oh man, we almost got him!
At least we were interested!
The Mets aren’t nearly as hateable as the Dodgers IMO but I do take some pleasure in them missing the playoffs after rolling out the money dumptruck for Soto and seemingly not doing much to improve the outlook for next year.
If we get a salary cap, I will enjoy watching Soto’s 2029 opt-out become worthless and trap him as the Mike Trout of a franchise he doesn’t even have a connection to.
I really wish we could have gotten Alonso, oh well
Shocking /s
So Schwarber (reportedly) was 4y/125m….Oh what I would do to see them go…
Bellinger….6y/165ish m. He can play first.
Seems to be for $180/185 not the $155 as initially reported
The idea the Pirates are focusing on left handed bats is hilarious when they have 7 minor leaguers in the lineup currently. Let’s start with just getting some major league talent and worry about which side of the plate they hit from later!
I don’t remember hearing anything suggesting the Pirates were actually trying with Alonso, however much we might have liked it. This seems fine to me.
Honestly I think it’s good to see a top-tier free agent go to a smaller market to join a theoretically exciting young core that hasn’t put it together yet. Arguably better that than sticking with the Mets, going to Boston, etc. And if not the Bucs as that smaller market team, better the O’s than the Reds, IMO.
Don’t worry guys, they’re saving all their money to sign Kyle Tucker
Could we still get him through the transfer portal?
Who is the next player the Pirates are “interested” in?
Shit.
I think that they dodged a bullet, with Alonso.
He had his best season since 2022, last year, but his BABIP was the highest of his career, and his projections for next season are down about 30% from this last season (AVG, SLG, OPS, BABIP, & fWAR).
Plus, if you put him at 1B, you’ve weakened your defense, b/c he’s a -10 DRS, so a decent chunk of his offense, is offset by his bad defense.
I would have liked the bat, but not the glove or cost and not year’s 3-5.
The Bob Nutting fan club is out in full force this week.
“Atleast they tried :)”
Keep this same sentiment when they lose 1-0 on a Skenes full game 0 ER effort in July again. Please keep this same sentiment so I can laugh at how fair-weather all you fans are. You don’t actually care about Jack shit, you just want to FEEL like the pirates are trying.
Fuck that. They should be opening the pocket books up for everybody and over spending on everyone. Get the bats in. I don’t give a shit if they “try”. Do it. It’s what separates winners from losers like the pirates and their shit organization.
Kinda relieved. Alonso is a mega douche.
Too much money for Alonso. I’d rather have Lowe—if they can get him—and the Japanese 3B. Or a free agent starting outfielder and the Japanese 3B. I don’t understand the disrespect for Spencer Horwitz. We already have our starting 1B, even if he needs a platoon partner against lefthanders, and IMO that still remains to be seen.
Again it’s not that Alonso wouldn’t have helped. Obviously he would have. But we need more than one bat. I’d rather see us get two or three reliably better than average hitters than one good to very good hitter.
Did we even make an offer? If we did, I missed it, and if we didn’t . . . So what? If we weren’t in on this guy, what’s the big deal?
I get it, we could have, and maybe should have, but it’s not like we swung and missed.
If they are serious about spending money, Paul Skenes will know and understand that they are trying. If they are blowing smoke up our asses Paul Skenes will know that as well and further cement that his employer is a terribly dressed unserious nepobaby dipshit that doesn’t care about winning and act accordingly.
Does anyone else think that having a guy like this or Schwarber in the Pirates lineup wouldn’t matter anyway, because he’d be too easy to pitch around or even just WALK? Like… what consequence would there be?
I don’t think Alonso is worth that kind of money. And so I’m glad Pittsburgh didn’t go after him.
I bet by the end of that five year deal that will look like a bad contract.
That’s more than Schwarber got, for God’s sake. He ain’t worth that.

Im so glad I don’t have to root for that guy now.
