  1. We need Soto as lead off and 2 pro bunters. Soto steals 2nd, bunt him to third and bunt him home.

  2. I know it’s analysts jobs to speculate and create narratives but the movement in the offseason is just starting. Let’s maybe have these discussions when they actually might mean something. Also Pete’s protection was not great after the first month and a half.

  3. Nimmo? Gone. Diaz? Gone. Alonso? Gone. This sucks. It’s gonna be a weird season without these 3.

  4. Yep. Only other potential RBI bat at the moment is… Baty? Alvarez? Two guys who haven’t even proven they aren’t career minor leaguers.

This could get ugly very fast.

  5. Painful to see. I’m kinda glad though. He was kinda like that GF that was really hot but terrible in the sack. Had to go. He sucked on D. His BA was trash. We good.

  6. I wanted them to win with guys that have endeared themselves to me. Cohen had the financial ability to keep Nimmo and Alonso and build a winner. I am fine with the loss of Diaz…but the other two were farmhands and should have been lifers.

  7. “Unless you get a bat” is doing a massive amount of work in that sentence. It’s December. Let’s talk again in March.

  8. There is no positive spin to this off-season so far. And what does this say to McClean? He’ll be a 24 year old rookie next year. Why would he want to be here if Boy Genius is just gonna discard him? Why would anyone want to sign here if they’re gonna get penny pinched? Soto is opting out if this dumpsterfire as soon as he can

  9. Get Bellinger, get Tucker. Trade for Alcatarra and make a serious push for Skubal or Skenes. We let players go that didn’t win here, so they better get guys that will make a difference now.

  10. This generally gets a negative reaction because people really want to believe in lineup protection, but [lineup protection is mostly a myth and who hits behind you has very little impact on production.](https://tht.fangraphs.com/orders-of-protection/)

Old heads are constantly referencing it, but it just isn’t supported by a huge sample of data.

When we signed Soto, everyone said he’d walk more and do less damage without Judge behind him to force pitchers to come into the zone. What actually happened? His walk rate and total walks went *down*, and he hit a career high in homers. And Soto’s best year before his year with the Yanks was with Josh Bell protecting him lmao. But regardless of that one player, the data is very clear that lineup protection is not something worth worrying about.

What they should be worrying about is replacing Pete’s awesome production, because losing a 140 wRC+ is going to fucking hurt a lot (but not because of where he hit in the lineup).

  11. You could argue Juan Soto had his best season when he had 39 year old Ryan Zimmerman hitting behind him
