This is so obvious to me to hire an offensive minded head coach. Doesn’t need to be LaFleur, but for those clamoring for a defense-centric head coach as per the article, what is your rationale?

  1. La Fluer was fired by NYJ for his work with Zach Wilson, then went back to McVay who runs the offense himself, no thanks.

  2. If Dart can play well with this train wreck of a coaching staff I’m confident he’ll play well with shula as hc

  3. I prefer an offensive minded HC because HC and QB are likely to be tied together for a decade+ if you nail both hirings.
But I am open to any true leader atp.

  4. The defense is keeping them from winning games. Not to mention our run blocking has been god awful for so long. Who knows for sure but maybe a defensive minded coach can help. All I know is if the defense didn’t choke all those games this year, we might be in the hunt. And that’s not to say that Dart won’t flourish with a good OC hire.

  5. What is my rationale? That hes obv a brilliant dc. And by credible reports is the cordinator on the rams that mcway has the most imvested in in the sense of grooming another head coach.

  6. I don’t care for offensive or defensive minded. I want a head coach that will lead the team and change the culture. If the guy is an offensive genius but guide the franchise and be a leader, I don’t want him (see: Brian Daboll)

  7. The logic is hire the best candidate. If all things were equal I would prefer an OC to a DC but there aren’t any great up and coming OCs who have more than a 1 year track record in this cycle as far as I can tell

  8. I would be happy with Shula, guy took a defense that lost the best defensive player of the last decade and it’s probably one of the best defensive units right now.

  9. The best coaches have a philosophy that drives what they do on both sides of the ball. I’m agnostic over whether we hire a guy who came up on the offensive or defensive side. I just want someone like Mike Macdonald who thinks about the game holistically and what it takes to win.

  10. What young quarterback has thrived with a defensive head coach who has a new offensive coordinator every few years?

  11. If you believe what has been going around, Shula has been taught the ins and outs to potentially be a head coach. Personally I wouldn’t want a McVay OC, he’s doing all the work. It would be the worse timing to pluck.

Hopefully McDaniel is fired, there goes your new OC. Besides, Dart could potentially develop under anyone. What he really needs is a strong defense so he doesn’t have to play catch up every game. It’s reason they’re losing all these games.

  12. we have the most talent, spend and worst performance on the defense. If we can get that group playing up to their paycheck this team can be a wrecking ball.

The offense on the other hand is quietly playing as a mid teens unit without any weapons, the right OC plus our group should be able to improve.

I also think we need a strong handed head coach and I like the idea of a CEO type with defensive leanings rather then a OC guy who is trying to get people to buy into schemes

  13. The Giants have never won anything running a fancy, pass-heavy offense. You look at the championship teams and they were run-first teams with excellent defense. They need to get back to that, have Cam and Tracy soften up the defense and when they start crowding the box it will open up things for Dart and Nabers.

  14. *It’s difficult to build sustainable success in the NFL. If you can pair a long-term quarterback with a high-level offensive play caller, you can bring stability to your team for years to come.*

Sold me on the idea. Just need the right O minded HC. I’m not sure if this is the guy.

  15. I’d rather give Shula the opportunity. You have a defense with quite a bit of talent you’d hope he can turn it into a contender level D.

That’s not to diminish the importance of offensive coaching, but with Dart’s natural ability to improvise it seems like solid coaching on the offensive side of the ball will be good enough.

Bonus points to Shula as supposedly being groomed by McVay to take a HC spot. And while I don’t hold the Jets against LaFleur, it still counts as a failed opportunity although one with an asterisk.

  16. I think we put too much stock into defensive vs offensive head coach. Give me a good leader who’s proven ability on one side of the ball at a high level. The pieces on our defense in the right hands can be scary. People act like if we bring in a defensive head coach, Dart will fall off a cliff and Nabers will fade into obscurity. Whoever we bring in as head coach needs a good OC and a good DC or none of it really matters anyway.

  17. Doesn’t really matter to me, I prefer NFL HC Experience & a proven track record. Playcalls should come from the booth up top based on analytics etc – where all in-game coaching work is really done. HC is a hugely important role but sort of just a figurehead for the staff at large.

  18. A strong defense is a QB’s best friend.

We have some talented defensive players (and some big gaps, admittedly).

I’d love to build around a scary, aggressive defense, and complement it with physical, competitive offense built around a creative multi-faceted running attack opening up the game for Nabers.

Most of all, I want a HEAD COACH who’ll bring in good coordinators and focus on coaching the whole team.

    Enough with glorified OCs.

  19. Dart has proven at least to me a very competent decision maker w the ball so as long as we have a good coordinator that can fully utilize darts abilities and skillsets we are good on the offensive side.
Our defense who is supposed to be the core strength of our team and is like 2nd or 3rd highest in payroll next season is pretty dismal and a defensive minded coach would be a lot more knowledgeable about what we are lacking and what he wants to build his team.

  20. McADoodle, Shurmur and Daboll – all offensive gurus/QB whisperers. Yup, that strategy has paid out.

  21. Chris Shula is has the rams defense performing like the 2021 Super Bowl winning rams defense but is doing it without star power like Aaron Dornold, Jalen Ramsey and Von Miller.

His defense has 1 invested first round pick (verse) a bunch of mid round picks, 2 undrafted free agents as starters and a hand full of good free agent signings. The vast majority of the rams defense is home grown and he’s scheming them into great positions. He’s scheming around the strengths of his players and has them playing like a unit. The Commanders 2022 first round pick was waived after everyone thought he was a bust and the rams picked him up. Under Shula he’s been pretty good and that really speaks to his level of coaching. He’s got 3 picks this year alone and reclamation projects make me think he’ll find a way for Banks and Thibs to have break out years.

Plus I want the head coach to be an executive and Shula is equipped to do just that. He coached on the offensive side of the ball too (rams passing game coordinator in 2023) under McVey which was also the year Puka N broke out. He’s bringing experience from both sides of the ball and I believe he’ll be a great coach.

  22. Defensive HC is fine. The issue rests with the likelihood that a good pick at OC will leave for HC if the offense takes off.

  23. I never understand clamoring for a defensive HC. Literally with only 1 exception, it only works as long as you have a QB that plays at an MVP level consistently. Otherwise, you’re going to start rotating OCs and not go anywhere.

The 1 exception is the LoB Seahawks.
