Tampa Bay is reportedly open to moving Brandon Laauo. Clearly, it’s been one of the worstkept secrets ever, and it’s probably gone back a couple years, actually. They’re looking for a young player or prospects in return. This isn’t coming out of nowhere. These two teams talked about this move last year, so both sides know where they stand on valuations. There’s multiple biders, including Cincinnati. But honestly, LA fits better here than in Cincy. That said, fit doesn’t always dictate who gets the deal done. Sometimes it’s just about who pays the price. Now, Lao’s profile decorated injury history. I mean, yeah, but he hit 31 home runs last year. Even if it was in a minor league park. Point is, he’s always hit for power. Even through injuries, he’s under control through 2027. And for a team like the Pirates, that matters. So, I mean, what’s the cost? Here’s here’s how I’d structure it. Um, level one, you could start with position players. The first thing I would do is just straight up offer them Nick Gonzalez. That’s the obvious name. He’s probably going to lose his gig anyway. And Tampa gets their young player. Beyond that, you know, you could go with Triolo, York, Chang, Branigan. They’re all in play. If they want a position player, you’ve got a few that you could offer there. I would think you have a a decent chance of Tampa Bay being interested in a player like Jared Trola. It’s a perfect kind of player for them. They love the good defense and they know how to turn that into something. Seen them do it before. And you know, Nick Gonzalez, he’s a guy that’s kind of already started. Tampa would probably not have too much of a hard time getting a couple good years out of him. Who knows? Those are types of things that they tend to do. And I’d at least see if they’ll bite at them. That’s what I would try to get by with first. Let’s make it as painless as possible. Here’s an open swap. This guy’s going to play this position for me. You take this guy off my hands. I’m just saying if you think that this is an upgradeable position or needs to be upgraded, well then by just statutes and looking at the roster, Nick Gonzalez becomes expendable, right? If they want pitching, start with prospect level arms, Antoine Kelly, Wilbur Otell, and maybe you can like creep it up into bullpen guys, consistent performers on the young side that you think you might be able to convince somebody could be more because you have that inclination to like Kyle Nicholas, somebody in that class. If you need to push more value, you know, Brandon Bedois, you might be able to convince them uh is somebody that they might want and they might. If you need to push in more value than that, you might have to consider Mike Burroughs or Braxton Ashcraft. But honestly, just for how much time you actually get with low, that might be a little steep. Might be what it takes, too. But I’d probably call it borderline overpay. Other options you could offer a top 10 prospect. There’s certain ones you can’t touch here, okay? Like you you can’t really touch the top six for Brandon Laauo. It’s just not the right kind of value lineup. It just isn’t. But at seven and eight, you’ve got Termar Johnson and Sammy Stfura. You could consider one of them movable for sure. I think Raphael Flores is safe at nine, if only because he’s so apparently major league ready and then Thomas Harrington at 10. Thomas Harrington could wind up being the perfect one forone offer here. really pretty. I mean, they they’d be able to sell a top 10 prospect that they got back and a starting prospect at that. And he’s got the kind of nasty stuff that they can exploit. They’re very good at manipulating pitchers and turning them into something. I think you could get this done. 2026 isn’t just any year. It’s the year for this executive team. If you believe Lao moves the needle this year, you need to make it happen. Need to stop worrying about all of the other years that are coming and all of the other players and losing team control of guys. And that’s not fair. And I know that goes against everything that has been preached along the way as we’ve talked about this rebuild. a move like this where I’m proposing sending out a guy that you’ve got five, six years of control of who’s already gotten to the league, still has an upward trajectory, still has a projectable ceiling that he hasn’t touched yet, and there’s still time. And I’m proposing that for a guy that might come here for a year and then be gone again. And oh by the way, he’s already like kind of falling apart defensively, at least according to advanced statistics, you know? I mean, so there it’s not a perfect guy or anything. I I think a lot of you might look back on something like that and kind of think like archer trade like vibes, right? And first, anything we do with Tampa will always be compared to that, no matter whether it has anything to do with it or not. this doesn’t. But I I mean I know the comparison’s coming just because of the team you’re dealing with. Well, there’s only so swindled you can get when you’re moving a guy that you only have a year of control for, you know, like how smoked are you going to get? You know, it’s not like the Pirates are going to give up Bubba for him. that’s it’s just not even going to be in the discussion. And and that may very well be a lot of the hangup here with getting a deal done is these two teams do have history of talking about this player. And I know that they’ve gotten to a certain point where they have discussed specific players and I could see perhaps a scenario in which Tampa basically didn’t want what was offered last time, but now they think that they should still be able to get what was offered last time. And the Pirates have since been like, “Yeah, but now it’s a lot less time with Brandon Laauo and now we’ve seen more of this player and have more evidence and we’re not as willing as we were.” And and that’s where, you know, maybe a guy like a Braxton Ashcraft goes from being in the Thomas Harrington camp to being a little bit too good to to just straight up offer after just a little bit of hesitation from a trade partner. So, I mean, I I I just think like there could be all kinds of scenarios playing out like that about this deal in particular. But the Pirates should be able to get this one done. If they really identify him as a guy that can help, they should. Do I have to give you guys like any kind of emotional support about offering a guy like Nick Gonzalez? I just want to know. I mean, like, are you upset that I say that? I I hope not. And I hope you don’t think that that means that I wash my hands of Nick and if they decide to keep him and he’s the second baseman, well, screw them. They didn’t upgrade. No, it’s not so much that. It’s more I’ve been pounded all off season now with the Pirates continued and perpetual interest in bringing in a second baseman. We think of the rumors we’ve heard, guys, for real. Jorge Palano, Brandon Laauo, Catel Marte. I mean, we’re talking about some of the better second baseman, at least offensively, there are in the league, and they’re going to play. I mean, you can tic tac about Brandon Laau’s defense. But 31 home runs is going to play. I don’t care what his advanced stats OA says. You know what I mean? you’re going to play the guy and and I think that the team’s telling us there’s a they see a clear upgrade spot here, which should also tell you they don’t entirely believe in York or Termar or any of those guys to come up here and automatically do anything. So, they’re looking for other guys and and like this is a perfect example of that. take what they’re telling you. They’re showing you. I mean, in these rumors, they’re not all driven by agents. Some of them are driven by the teams. Some of them are driven by the players, obviously. But the Pirates aren’t in all of these conversations by accident. And they’re not looking for second baseman by accident. They see it as a place where they legitimately have opportunities to upgrade and add a bat. And it’s hard to disagree. It’s hard to disagree. It doesn’t mean that I won’t root for Nick Gonzalez or think that he has some room to improve. I do and and we’ll keep talking about him as such until such a time as he gets moved. I’m just saying open your mind to like the actual on roster guys being potentially offered up in trades. We may get to that point. Not sure we are. I I would think like Catel Marte, well, you’d have a really hard time not offering major league property in coming back. And I think you’d have to start with Nick Gonzalez, period. That’s a no-brainer that that’s going to happen. That makes more sense than anything about that deal, frankly. But I think you’d have to throw in a top prospect. And I would think for Catel Marte, which I don’t want to turn this into a Catel Marte discussion, but you’re talking about really getting into some painful stuff. Barcos, Bubba, you might even have to talk about, you know, Seth Hernandez, you know, you could be talking about two or three of your top 10, different trade entirely. Coming up next, I want to talk about uh aggressive moves a little bit more. Let’s talk about Jorge Blanco and why the Pirates should go the extra mile to see if they can’t wrap him up. Hey, the World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be massive. And let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. It’s why the Game Time app is clutch. Finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With Game Time, you can track price drops in real time, get alerts when g when great seats open, and buy tickets the moment they hit the app. It puts the power back in your hands and makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible. And if you haven’t already, check out the Everydayer Club at lockedonpirates.supcast.com. For just $5 a month or $50 a year, you get interruptionfree episodes, access to our Discord, and some of my writing that I’m posting over there. I just started last night, wrote my first little mini article over at the Discord. So, if you missed my writing, that’s where it’s going to be. I’m going to start popping it up over there. It’s a great way to support the show and stay connected. Now, let’s talk Blanco. Alex Stumpf over at mob.com reports that the Pirates are expected to extend a formal offer to Jorge Palano as early as today. Here’s what we know. Um, he is targeting 3 to four years. He’d like over 12 million annual average value. Some people are projecting three years, 42 million. That would be around 14 million. Uh, I’ve seen as high as 15. General speculation is that he could land somewhere in the territory of two years, 24 million or 3 years. Uh, but the but but the people that think he could go three years, they want to lower that AAV down to like 10, 11. There seems to be a little bit of push back as to what he wants versus what is being offered. Factors influencing this. Sammy Palanco had a strong 2025, 26 home runs, 125 or 125 OPS plus at age 32. Teams weigh his defense and injury risk, but he can play second base, third base, uh, DH as he ages. He can even play a little bit of shortstop if you really want to try it. Not something I think I would do long term, but in a pinch or in an injury situation, Seattle wants him back, but likely they prefer shorter terms. I mean, here’s my take on this, man. Like, don’t fear three years for a 32 year old. This team routinely signs 36 year olds to patch holes. Palano patches holes. He’s versatile and a valuable bat. If everyone’s offering two years, give them the third. You know, if the market says 12 AAV, go 13. If you want them, make it happen. To me, on this deal in particular, the turkey is on the table. Seattle will pay. They’ve proven that. I mean, hell, reportedly, depending on who you believe, they’ve already beaten you once this year, right? Seattle will pay, but they won’t go insane. This is winnable. This is something I absolutely think that they must get done. If they target him as a guy they want, again, I think this is a a longer ranging decision than Brandon Laauo. I’d rather them go the Jorge Palano route. It’s always better to go out and sign free agents than it is to trade anything that you value at all for something else. It’s always better to sign free agents if you can, if they actually fill the need. And Jorge Planka does. I don’t think he’s got nearly the power expectancy that Brandon Laauo does. I think he’s got the potential to hit the same amount of home runs as Brandon Laauo, but I think you kind of expect it. It’s more consistent with Brandon Laauo. Let’s said you only get the one year of Brandon Laauo and you’ve given up something that you probably value. Greg, I mean, Blanco, you’re you’re you’re bringing in a guy that he’s been a pretty consistent performer. He’s got some waves. I would say he he instead of peaks and valleys, he’s just got a nice gentle wave of a career. There’s ups and downs. He’s had a peak here and a peak there, but he’s never like dipped so bad that he was a guy you just had to get off the field or you couldn’t use or man, there was no use for him. He’s always been a bat you want in the lineup. And he plays hard. I think he’s a good leader, good type of player to bring into this team, really. I mean, a versatile player, but again, just their interest here to me speaks volumes about what they think of second base. They just don’t feel like they’re going to get enough production out of it. It makes me feel like they there is some belief within the organization that Nick Gonzalez is at or near his ceiling. I’m not sure if I get there or not. I think there’s a little more power to be untapped, especially if he starts really buying in more to that right center approach that he did uh towards the end of the season where he he was really hitting a lot of line drives to the gaps. And that that to me is Nick Gonzalez at his best. He’s got enough speed to make people pay for for all the doubles and he can turn some of those gap shots into triples. I’m not sure they’re going to turn into home runs. And I think maybe that’s kind of where the team’s getting to. They’re just not sure they’re going to turn into home runs and they need to be a little more sure they’re going to get some of those. Second base becomes an upgrade position at that point. I don’t think it’s an imperative upgrade position, but I feel like I need to address exactly why second base is coming up so much now. on it and it just isn’t going to come from being nice about who’s currently the incumbent or who he might be fighting with. I think the reason that so many of us have decided second base is off limits or not a concern is because of the rolling wave of options that they have. You know, you’ve got Nick York, Nick Gonzalez, Jared Triola. despite your opinions, you know, heck Ronnie Simon, who they just brought back on a minor league deal, you know, and we’re not even like getting into really the depth aspect of it, what’s coming. We’re not even talking about Turar yet, you know? We’re not even really talking about Jack Brandan getting involved like second base. The reason that we have just written it off, I think, is because of redundancy. We’ve got so many options that you just mentally go to like, well, one of them will work out. A lot of people will do the same thing when you start talking about starting pitching. You know, you as long as you can come up with, you know, seven or eight options, you think to yourself, well, I got seven or eight options. How the hell is that not going to be enough? Right? and you don’t necessarily think that you’re going to go through those seven or eight options because you’re not thinking about which one’s going to get injured and when and you know who can only go so many innings and there’s a lot of conversation that goes on into those things before you start thinking that you need to upgrade. All I’m suggesting here is that it’s very clear to me internally they’ve had the discussions and second base is an easy upgrade for them. they really see it coming and they think it’s what they need to do. It also it doesn’t mean it has to be targeted at Nick Gonzalez. They can think Nick Gonzalez can move to shortstop and play third base and be a utility. Maybe that’s as simple a way as you can put it. You’re not necessarily forcing anybody out the door, but those players aren’t necessarily seen as ready to be a starter right now. They want to introduce them and give them opportunities in different ways. gonna have to help the baseball team in other places if you ever want to be a starter here, kid. That’s that’s what you’ve wrought here in three years. Maybe, you know, but I I don’t want to turn my nose up at any position being upgraded just because it wasn’t necessarily on my original forecast. The only one I really like to push back on is first base. First, I really think Spencer Horwitz showed a lot last year. I liked it. I want to see a lot more. I think the power is really going to push. I think that there there is room for improvement. I think there’s a 20 home run bat in there. I really do. It’s just such a simple swing and I really think he’s got that potential and I think he’s a good defender. I I want to see more of him at first base. I don’t want to push him aside. Now, would I have if like the only bat they could have gotten was like Pete Alonzo? Sure. Yeah, you would have dealt with it. That’s that’s the way you have to be. You got to be flexible and roll with the punches and be open. If you want to start playing in these areas, then you’ve got to be open to moving guys that you don’t want to move. You’ve got to be open to discussing guys that you thought were part of the whole thing that maybe aren’t anymore. And you have to have those discussions. can’t be stupid about it. You’re not trying to rebuild again, but you might need to like realize, hey, I I took a wrong turn back at that fork, and it’s just not going to lead to the right place. Let’s back out now. See if we can’t fix that and get back on track. That That’s as simple as the second base discussion right now. Let’s just adjust. Got to have more power. He was supposed to introduce a lot of power. Didn’t come. Let’s go this route. Let’s get some Insta power. We have to. I think that’s why this whole second base discussion is heated up so much. I really do. Hey everybody, welcome back to Locked On Pirates. Before we hit the AMA, um, let’s make sure you’re following me on social media. Gary Mo20007 onx. Uh Facebook, you can find me at Gary Morgan Locked on Pirates anywhere that you look. And you know, hey, don’t forget you can join our Discord for realtime conversations and AMA sessions. Links are in the show notes. Now, let’s get to your questions. First, AMA from Pops in our Discord. Um, with the Orio getting Alonzo, does that make it easier for the Pirates to pick up a player like Mayo, Westber, Kirkstat, or Cows? Um, I don’t think Kirkstat is in that conversation anymore. Um, I just don’t I think the Bloom is off his rose uh to a degree. I think really Kobe Mayo has kind of not not gone great either. I I think there’s still some potential there, but man, I I’d almost put him in borderline prospect category. Um I I like some of what I see, but I’m not 100% sure he’s going to ever progress much further than he is. I do like his ability to maybe help out at third base. Westberg would be the best, but I don’t think you’re going to get Westber. I just don’t I don’t think they’re going to give up Westber. And I don’t think they’ll give up Cowser either. Um, for whatever reason, that baseball team saw a need to go and get more offense more than they saw a need to go and get more pitching. They They are such a strange team. If the Pirates and Baltimore Orioles were to just merge teams, their payroll would still be probably bottom 15, I think, together. Maybe not after the Alonzo thing. They probably be would would be they probably wouldn’t be top 10 yet, I would say. I’d have to do math to be honest about that. But I’m just trying to make a joke, so I’m thinking too much. But let’s I I think they would probably be somewhere in the in the bottom 20 payrolls and they would be an unstoppable juggernaut. The the pitching staff from the Pittsburgh Pirates and the the hitting from from the Orioles, I I think that team would be unstoppable. Um I guess the Alonzo deal really could shake somebody loose. Again, I don’t think Kirkstat needs shaken loose. I think they’d probably give up on him pretty easily. I I just don’t think he’s going to latch on and it just hasn’t been impressive. Cowser has had some moments. I think they probably would want to keep him, but he’s been around a little bit, too. So, I mean, you know, you’ve already used a couple years of his control. Westber, I just think, is probably the cream of that crop. And the other one, Mayo. I I don’t know. I’m so iffy on him right now. I wish I could be less lukewarm, but I just feel I I feel mediocre about him for some reason. I I just think he’s a name we recognize because it’s been around a long time. And I I I’m not interested anymore. I don’t think Westberg would be the greatest get if you could get it done. I again, I said yesterday on the show, I’d probably try for Rushman. I think a guy like him could break free. We’ll see. Second AMA here. This one’s from Graves. Uh, any news on the overseas markets? And then she was kind enough to give me the key deadlines because if you get Graves as a dedicated follower, you also get her research department. She’s pretty awesome at giving you stuff and I make no bones about it. This stuff comes from her. December 21st at 5:00 pm Sun the 29year-old must be signed. Munitaka Murakami is on the 22nd. Tatsuya Imi I think she might have just wanted to hear me read these names. It’s January 2nd. January 4th is Okamoto. Um and Kona Takashi Takahashi, sorry. Okamoto to me is the big name uh to watch. Um but all of those are worth tracking. Okamoto is the only one I’ve heard the pirates really interested in. It’s said to be pretty serious interest, but I don’t know how far it’s gone or anything. To me, those things are mostly are you willing to pay the posting fee? And if you are, then you know, let the battle ensue. If you’re willing to pay the posting fee, you’re probably willing to go to whatever rumored level you thought he would go to. And I think he’s well within the realm of possibilities, even based on just what we talked about with Jorge Palano. Um, he’s a 30-year-old, so it’s really the same kind of signing with a little more risk. The power potential is really big here. And the exciting thing about Okamoto is that he doesn’t strike out while he’s hitting all those home runs. So, I think that’s a player that we absolutely um should keep our eye on and probably the most likely out of this set. That said, these things come together so weird. I I I could very well just not hear a name. This is a different department than anything I talked to. I don’t I don’t hear anybody really discuss it all that much. Okamoto, again, only one I’ve heard. So follow me on socials if you want some more. Join our Discord for more AMA sessions. Get in there. It’s a lot of fun. Let’s wrap this up. Today we broke down Brandon Laauo trade rumors, Jorge Palano’s contract outlook, and key overseas market deadlines. Tomorrow we’ll dive into whatever else pops up this time of year. It’s best to roll with the punches. We’re serious about Pirates baseball because somebody has to be. Let’s go, Bucks.

Could Brandon Lowe be the big bat that propels the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2026? Trade rumors heat up as Tampa Bay listens to offers, with the Pirates squarely in the mix. Gary Morgan explores potential trade packages—would Nick Gonzalez or top pitching prospects get the deal done, or would that be too steep a price for the control Lowe brings through 2027? With comparisons to the infamous Chris Archer deal looming, can Pittsburgh finally come out ahead in a blockbuster trade with the Rays?

Hot stove talk continues as Jorge Polanco’s contract buzz intensifies and the Pirates reportedly prepare a competitive multi-year offer. Gary Morgan breaks down Polanco’s fit in the lineup, how his versatility and power stack up against Lowe, and why adding proven MLB talent is preferable to sacrificing future stars. Overseas market deadlines and AMA questions from Discord round out an information-packed episode for Pirates fans eyeing real upgrades at second base.

  1. Oh crap Gary – my buddy is a lifer O’s fan just like us and the Bucco’s. We’ve had many merger conversations over beers for at least the past year going. Our lineup projections still didn’t beat the Dodgers as of trade deadline in the summer – getting closer, give it a year and let’s go haha!

  2. What about both Gary? Lowe at 2nd and Polanco the DH and utility? Thats probably close to $25M. Then maybe add a bleday to LF? Or maybe Polanco/Lowe, O’Hearn, and Bleday.
