Another buy low bullpen piece, Holderman was excellent out of the Pirates pen in '23 and '24 but struggled heavily last season. If he can bounce back to 2024 form he's a potential 7th or 8th inning option.

  1. Maybe not very exciting, but you need arms like Holderman, Brogdon, and Pallette to get through the season. Low risk depth (in the mold of your Zak Kent/Kolby Allard/Matt Festa moves from last season).

Would love to see even similar moves on the offensive side.

  2. Worth noting that he has 2 options remaining according to FanGraphs, so this doesn’t necessarily lock him in as a projected major league piece.

  3. Kinda another dumpster diving piece. I do think we should be acquiring sinker sweeper guys. For some reason we haven’t really developed them and have to get them in FA, like Junis. Holderman (great name) has been good before, but was awful last year. Like Brogdon, I think we have him for multiple years if we want him. Still not the big move we need, but I can’t imagine it costing enough to prohibit any other move.

  4. Stuff+ models really like him, especially his sweeper. Even in a bad year he was one of the best pitchers in the league at getting ground balls, and his fastball averages out at 97 mph. I think he is a better upside play than Brogdon was, and I am curious to see what kind of contract he got (he also still has MiLB options left, so I think this is more of a depth play than just giving him a million bucks to sit at the back end of the bullpen and mop up games).

  5. Looks like we will have a deep pitching staff at AAA in April. If one or maybe two of the surgically repaired arms that we have been collecting returns to form we will be lucky. You can never have enough pitching, these players will have a couple of months at AAA that will be make or break for them.

  6. Low risk, high reward. Needing to reload our BP with the loss of Clase and needing a new setup man as Smith is our new closer.

But we still have a major flaw our offense was dead last. We still need a power bat. Wake me up when we sign a bat 😴😴😴
