Uh, Thunder entered their NBA Cup quarterfinal meeting with the Suns as the top seed in the West in the midst of a franchise record tying 15game winning streak. their lone loss of the season coming to the Blazers 5 weeks ago. Suns were looking for revenge after OKC scare in group play on November 28th. Suns erased a 15-point deficit late in the fourth quarter of that game. Ended up losing by four after SGA scored 10 of his 37 points in the final three minutes of the game. But OKC had their sights set on another trip to Sin City after reaching the NBA Cup final last season and had the Suns out here looking like the buns. Highlights, please. Thank you, guys. This one was over before it even started as OKC put belt to ass from the jump, racing out to a 15-point lead after the first frame and a 26-point lead at halftime. SGA led the way with 28 points, eight dimes, and two steals, going 11 for 15 from the field, including three or four from deep in 28 minutes of action. He was a plus 43 in the game while extending his 20 point streak to 96 games, sitting the fourth quarter for the 14th time this season. And Chad Homegrren added 24 points and eight boards on nine of 13 shooting. And Jaylen Williams put up 155 and five in his 22 minutes of action. So Thunder led as much by as much as 53 points in the game, going on to win by 49 points, giving the Suns their worst loss in franchise history. OKC set a franchise record with their 16th straight win to improve to 24-1 on the season. Let’s take a look. The Thunder’s 24-1 start ties the 2015 16 Warriors for the best in NBA history through 25 games. Thunder currently have a plus 17.4 average point differential, nearly five points higher than the record they set last season. And they’re on pace for 79 wins this season. They have amassed this historic record despite ranking second leaguewide in games missed because of injury with their primary starting lineup from last season’s champion squad yet to play a game together this season. So, when we look at the Thunder squad, we talked about them a little bit yesterday. Obviously, Sha, you have some opinions on the Thunder squad. Yesterday, they go out beat the Suns by 59 to advance to the NBA Cup finals. Are we witnessing right now the most dominant team in NBA history? What? Just based on the numbers you asking me? I’m asking you a question. That was a question mark at the end. Are we witnessing? Like I just said, I said yesterday, man. You said you said a weak strength of schedule, but 24-1. You play who you play. Yeah. Winning games by 17 points. Can you name me four people on the Phoenix Suns right now that was playing last night? Man, they got Dylan Brooks. Grayson Allen was playing for a little bit before he got voted. Dylan Brooks the savior. Got Dylan Brooks. At the end of the day, we going to have to wait until the end to see, you know, if all this pan out. So, I’m not going to jump to the conclusion that everybody else jumping to based on what’s happening. But when you see what they’ve done so far just in this 25 game sample size, I know again it’s too much. It’s too much to unpack without being a hater. It’s too much to impact. If you support things with facts, that’s not called hater. No, I mean because we watch the game and you see there’s there’s a difference when you look at how they lost to the Blazers. Like you lost your only game you lost to the Blazers. They had four people out that game. for losing that game being unhealthy, you look at the rest of the league and say, “All right, we’re losing these games based on what you just used as an excuse for them losing that game.” So, if you got guys unhealthy and your team ain’t balanced, it’s just like you going to lose games based on that. It’s going to be your excuse. They’re playing well. Like I said yesterday, they they playing well. They playing who they play. Beat the teams you’re supposed to beat. That’s usually how it goes. Win the games you’re supposed to win. come through the clutch and and learn and figure out how to win the games that are supposed to be close like they did in Houston. So, like I said, when we figure it out at the end, they keep it going, they keep it going, they break the record, they break a record, but as we know, breaking the record does not necessarily ensure a championship. Puts a lot of pressure on. I mean, they got to be considered, you know, one of the greatest all-around teams. I mean, last year, I feel like they feel like they were disrespected last year. you know, people probably felt like it was a fluke. Um, they came back this year dominating the league. Um, you know, their schedule, whatever, might not be as strong as it is, but everybody stepping up. Um, it says a lot about a young team that can come back with, you know, championship hangover as they say and things like that. But to come back and, you know, put everybody together being down with JDub and and still being able to to, you know, do what they do, it says a lot about their team, says a lot about their leader, says a lot about SGA and says a lot about what they have going on around there. So, yeah, they got to be considered one of the the best all-around teams ever. I mean 68 and 14 last season and obviously had a couple seven game series in their road to the championship including the Pacers in the finals with how getting hurt in that game. So it could have went another way of how he stayed healthy. But nah um they’re just a talented team for me. Um everybody like the the licorice guys they got could shoot threes and make shots. They not they not just onedimensional players like just a defender and can’t do nothing else. Um they got corner guys that a bunch of them that’s elite that could shoot any shot they want, make shots. That’s hard to stop when everybody on your roster could put the ball in the hole and got confidence to do it. Especially when you got a a leader like Shay and you can see Chad is getting more comfortable feeling itself. Oh man, it’s it’s going to be hard to stop them, man. For sure. When you look at this Thunder squad, what they’ve been able to do so far, tie in the the 2015 16 awards with 25 a 4 in one start through 25 games. Do you feel like we’re witnessing the most dominant team in NBA history? Most dominant in NBA history. I mean, I I guess witnessing as we understand what’s going on. Um I mean, 96 Bulls was a dominant team. I mean very very much so people actually feared them right because everyone feared Michael Jordan right so do you feel like people don’t fear the Thunder and SGA I don’t know yeah that’s something you got to ask you know the players and but I wouldn’t think so I mean we you can see it in layup line uh against the Bulls back then so I would say like just aesthetically Chicago Bulls was probably the most dominant Uh yeah, really they fear that man. Um but what these what these guys are doing man is it’s dominating is dominating, right? I mean we can look at the the schedule and the schedule I mean their first win against the Rockets double is a contender. We knew Pacers are going to be ass. That went in overtime. Yep. I think double overtime. We knew Hawks was going to be ass. Maverick’s supposed to been good. Hawks are not technically ass. Kings are supposed to be good. No, we they were supposed to be ass. They supposed to put Kings was supposed to be good. Wizards obviously supposed to be ass. Um Pelicans Clippers was the supposed to be good was supposed to been the second best team in the league, right? So they’ve they’ve played they played the Warriors, played the Lakers. I mean, they played a bunch of favorites. They only they haven’t played Denver. Um they haven’t played they haven’t played. Yeah. Okay. They played Denver to what? Next year. Denver and New York. Detroit. Detroit. They haven’t played Detroit, but nobody consider them preseason good anyway. They, you know, in the in the middle of the road team. So, the Cleveland Cavaliers. If they’re competition is the teams we’re naming now, then that is a problem then, right? Because if we’re saying New York Knicks is one of the challenging teams that they’re going to play, or Detroit, that’s going to be a grinded out game. Denver, but nobody thought about them as a a favorite to win a championship. But, I mean, they, you know, they’re putting boot ass too. Nuggets obviously know probably Nuggets is probably, you know, Yeah, I said Nuggets. It’s probably Nuggets is really their only real Houston too. Houston, too. I mean, they got the best of them, but you know, they close game. Yeah, that second game. That second I mean the second matchup is going to be the one be interesting. Well, first game of the season. Obviously, a lot of emotional starting this year. No, Jaylen Williams. Yeah. Twice. Twice. Four times. They played They should play four times. They played four times. But I mean, you know, I mean, we get consistency. It’s like Shay is a I mean, it’s a very very very consistent player. Like it’s like, but you don’t think they scared of Shay like they scared of you? I would assume so. I think so. Cuz I didn’t see Dylan Brooks guard him one time. Yeah. I He’s supposed to What’s the fear? What’s the fear? The fear level with Mike in the comparison to fear level with Shay is we’re playing seven on five, eight on five. The refs have go through the highlights again. I listen bro on I know we just I’m just saying Michael Jordan’s fear was you had you had the core pieces around Mike but Mike was in the triangle doing Mike [ __ ] right? Your fear with Shay is, can I guard him? Are you going to allow me to guard him tonight? You couldn’t touch Mike neither, though. If you watch the game, they couldn’t guard them at all because they was getting fouls. But if they’re allowed to play aggressive defense, OKC, they have the least amount of fouls in the league. So, we saying that they have the least they only score cuz the refs. No, I’m saying they have the least amount of fouls in the league and they’re the most aggressive defensive team. Mhm. Look who they So, every time they got a guy who can go to the line, every time he gets the ball, we can’t get no fouls on him. There’s Wait, wait, wait, wait. They only score because they like I mean, I feel like Utah was like that when when I like There’s always teams that can play physical. How many How many years ago was that? I mean, [ __ ] a long time ago. So, just look at the discrepancy. I’m just saying the discrepancy of how last year they said that Indiana and OKC were the two aggressive defensive defensive teams. But when you’re playing against them, they are allowed to foul you. That was the New York knock. New York is like, god damn, like we can’t touch them, but they can foul us this hard. But they’re known for that though, right? Yeah. Oh, understand if you are not getting fouls and we’re fouling you and you’re not fouling us, it’s a discrepancy with the with the refereeing. It’s a it’s a for it’s just like anything when you establish who you are, they give you the benefit of the doubt. I mean, that’s just a that’s just a real thing. I learned that my my rookie year, you got to establish yourself as a certain defender. Like, so like even with like Detroit Pistons, right? Like all the Detroit Pistons team damn near play the same style, right? They get into you, they play physical, they don’t I mean it’s it’s it’s who they are. So once the refs know this is the style of play. It’s basically playoff basketball, right? So the problem is they do it on both sides. The, you know, you got to look at it. Shane’s aggressive on both sides. Defense offensively is an aggression, right? Where I’mma hit you. You got I’mma hit you hard. When you react, then I’mma You know what I mean? So he he does very well at the bait and switch tactic. Yes. Right. And so that’s IQ. But at this point the IQ is so high. But it makes it unfair though, right? Think about how it makes it unfair. You can play aggressively defensively on me. Mhm. And all you have to do offensively is flop. The chat thing with Grayson Allen. He felt like, “Y’all been playing aggressive with us all night. I’m finally about to play aggressive back.” And the moment I do, Chad flops fragrant fragrant too. Do you feel like Chad flopped over 100% because Chad’s not tough like that, but they get allowed to play tough defense, but when we play tough defense on you, you get to flop because like you just said, the aggressiveness on him offensively for Shay allows him to take the content, take the contact and flop on it. And that’s smart. Like it is smart. He knows that it’s a part of his game now. It’s a part of Luca’s game now. It’s a part of AR’s game now. It’s a part of Jaylen Brunson’s game now. When I can be aggressive offensively, I’m going to get the favor of the referee. But the difference is what can we do defensively if we’re not allowed to play aggressive either? Stop. Like, oh, sorry. Stop poking your head. I mean I mean just like what’s that label they get cuz they say LeBron flop back in the day. So I feel like it’s just some you trying to put like something on greatness. He could score in any way out there on the court. Three-point line, mid-range, post up, off the dribble, but be said he flops to the line. All his buckets, all 30 points every night is from the free throw line. So Shane only three three throw attempts. That’s what I’m saying. Like 15 of them. He’s averaging 10 attempts per per game this season. I think what you’re saying is is valid though. Look, I’m not saying it’s not valid. But here’s the here’s the other validation on the other side. There’s proof cuz the eye in the sky don’t lie. We can show you film of what’s fouls and what’s not. What he baiting trying to get the foul call and where he’s just playing who. They actually have deciphered that. And it’s not no knock against him because it’s smart. Like we all talked about yesterday. What was our conversation? Flopping and just playing through the contact. What’s a foul? The difference is when he knows that, hey man, I just want to take this this possession off, get to the free throw line. I know the [ __ ] ref’s going to give me the call if I do it right. But isn’t that a smart tactic? I get the ball. Isn’t that another level of and I can keep the defender on their heels? That’s another that’s another level of greatness. Is it flopping? You’re It’s another level of manipulating the game and understanding that manipulating the game. Is this flopping? It’s it’s it’s weak. No, it’s not. It’s It’s the It’s the to manipulate the game. Remember we talked about Kyrie to you. Kyrie don’t have to do that. He doesn’t have to do what? Manipulate the game. Who says he But who says he doesn’t? His skill work the way the way he gets to the everything. He plays through contact. He goes through. He does. That’s a If you’re going to foul me, you’re going to foul me hard. It’s going to be a foul. We’re not We all going to be like, “That’s a foul.” We’re not going to make it a questionable thing like, “Yo, come on, bro. You just h you got to he listen if you watch the game you listen to uh SGA he says every single time I did it and we learned that and I learned that too. He’s initiating the contact. He’s forcing things that those are things are liability to the defense. I have I can’t do nothing. So you can’t guard me. That’s supposed to be the offensive backard. That’s supposed If you’re pushing me off, what’s that? No. If I’m no. So this is this is a trick. So rest look for with the extended elbow. Okay. Right. Extended elbow pushoffs. They’ve never looked at shoulder. They don’t consider push. It’s the chicken wing. Right. So you come in and you hit them and boom, you do all that. They don’t call that. They don’t call that offensive fouls. But listen, basketball players, especially, you know, like the James Harden, the Shayes, what they’re what they’re playing on is human behavior, right? If I know, if I know soon as I get the ball, you’re going to jam me, right? The first thing I’m going to do is try to swipe through, see if I catch you. If I don’t catch you, I’m going to try to get past you, stop, see if you’re going to hit me. Right? Because if you are a game changer on the defensive side, I don’t want you in the fourth quarter just like you don’t want me in the fourth quarter. So my job is try to get you in foul trouble. The Spurs and Lakers met in the West quarterfinal night cap in Los Angeles. It was the team’s second meeting this season after the Lakers nearly tricked off the first one back on November 5th. Lakers were without LeBron in that game and the Spurs were without Wimi in this one with the alien missing his 12th straight game while recovering from a calf strain. Spurs continue to hold it down without their franchise player, putting the West on notice that they’re ready to take a leap this season and throw their names in the hat amongst the top teams in the conference. Let’s take a look at the highlights. Unfortunately, so Lakers offense looked solid to start, but their defense did not. Spurs closed the first quarter on a 196 run to take a 3930 lead after the first frame. Come on, run back, LeBron. Luca got to stop that. LeBron had his man covered. Come on, Brian. Run back. As previously noticed, San Antonio opened second quarter on an 80 run to extend their lead to 17 and led by double digits. For most of the game, Spurs had seven players scoring double figures. Led by last season’s rookie of the year, Stefan Castle, who had a season high 30 points on 10 of 14 shooting along with 10 rebounds, six assists. Castle scored 21 of his 30 points in the second half. Dear Fox came through with 20 points, going four of eight from distance. Spurs bench outscored the Lakers 48 to 31 with Kell Johnson putting up 18 points. Julian Champany adding 17 and Dylan Harper contributing 13 points in 20 minutes of action. Luca led the Lakers with 35 points on 11 of 24 shooting. He also had five rebounds, eight assists. Slovenian Jesus ninth straight 30-point game. Ron put up a double double, 19 points, 15 boards, eight assists, three blocks. Austin Reeves finished with 15, eight boards, and seven assists going six to 16 from the field. Marcus Smart though, you’ll be watching this game in our final playback uh final playback watch party. They averaging like 40, right? Yeah. You know, so you averaging 40, you only get 26. The discrepancy is going to be pretty large. So if you think about the Lakers and the way that they play, you take them out of their play style, you end up with 20 point. No, I think they’re around what? 20 uh 28 free throw attempts per game this year. Per game. So they was at 26. I mean 23 to 36. So what so what did it what did uh the Spurs have? Uh Spurs went to the line 36 times. Lakers went to the line. Did they fouled per the Spurs were aggressive and went to the hole. They attacked the guys who don’t want to play defense. Yeah. And they’re they play physical defense to them which the Lakers don’t like because as we’ve been seeing don’t we don’t like smart basketball. Smart the easier basketball. Yeah. Surprisingly, they have a higher offensive rating in the stretch without Wimi and Stefan Castle only playing three games in that time frame. Dear Fox averaged 25.7 assists, four rebounds the past 12 games. And as to be expected, their defense has suffered, but they’ve still found ways to win games. Currently fifth in the West with a record of 17 and seven, the same record as the Lakers who are in the fourth spot. So, how impressive has this Spurs team been without Wimi? After one game, we dropped to four. It’s a cold game out here. Grab your sweater. Mhm. I told y’all, you know, I’m a Spurs and the Knicks for for the for the season. A dual threat. Uh, seeing that Wimies has been out and I told you that the the new coach had those guys playing at a championship level early on preseason training camp was well. They all know what their roles are and they wasn’t even healthy when Wimby was healthy. So now that Deion Darren Fox is back, Castle just got back out there. They’ve been meaning to get him back out there cuz they was missing that little spark, but they were still winning. So, um, like I said, it’s something to look forward to. I think they’ll be a challenge for OKC for sure. I think getting them getting them healthy, they’ll be a team to go out there and run up and down with them, challenge them both sides of the floor. Um, and once Wimby gets back and and he fits back into the mold of what they’re doing, I think it’s going to be something that they can look forward to as a franchise, getting that energy back, getting that that that camaraderie back. And I think uh playoff is going to definitely be something to look forward to for sure. Yeah, I think without Wimby, I mean, they lose that defensive presence. Uh offensively, they’re able to move the ball more. Uh I think with Wimby there, the ball gets stuck a little bit. So, um they’re moving the ball more. This is going to be a scary team and I feel like that whole dynamic of the Spurs is is coming back around again in this era. Gilbert J. And, um, yeah, man, he’s he’s one of the great ones. So, when you look at James Harden, how’s Harden influenced the game offensively during his NBA career? Well, he’s done it in two different facets. from the shooting guard aspect. He’s done it and he’s done it from a point guard aspect. And I think even before Houston, it wasn’t in Houston. I don’t think he was doing it from a point guard aspect. I think he was doing it from a shooting guard aspect. Where you break down the hoop of it, you look at Luca step back and you look at James Harden step back. And what the difference is is James Harden is left-handed. So it looks different. It looks a lot more a little bit more separation, a little bit more awkward. and he’s getting the the foul with it cuz you don’t know how to guard it from a left-handed player. So, you switch that and you look at Luca step back, it’s similar just without the extra little step to to gain extra separation. But James would set you up with the twing tween tween tween step. And if you think about it from how we hoop, if you doing it on the right side, tween tween step, it’s the same separation. It’s the same feel. We get that shot off. All we really need is the space to shoot it. He’s left-handed. So to me, he just created an opportunity as a ball handler to mix in the jump shot and not have to go all the way to the rim all the time. Then when he does go to the rim, he developed that floater.
