Have the Cincinnati Bengals Broken Joe Burrow??? | The Rich Eisen Show
There are some fan bases in the National Football League that um that feel as if it will never happen for them. Winning the Super Bowl, winning it all. Okay. Okay. Yes. Winning it all. Getting something nice, holding the truth to happen to them. Let’s just start with that. A run just like Right. Yeah, this getting getting something in a draft where somebody turns out to be generationally brilliant dropped in your lap out of nowhere. Um, and you’ve enjoyed that, Christopher. Twice, maybe now twice. Packers fans have enjoyed it. Um, Chiefs fans, my gosh, are they water skiing behind yachts, right? For sure. Okay. I once enjoyed it. Yeah. Well, that’s true. But you you still you still are better than most. You’re better off than most. I’m I’m talking about football wise. Oh, I thought you might understand a human being. Here’s my that that’s my windup. Here’s the pitch. Now, so for say Browns fans, Jets fans, Cardinals fans, Bengals fans, you’re wondering, will it ever happen? Can it ever happen? We’ve come close to having it happen. And um in the case of the Bengals, they’ve come close to having it happen. Very close. Hey kids, back in the day, you know, before Chris Collinssworth was sliding in to uh to booths and cameras. Oh, Rich, you know, by the way, Cooper Cooper loves the uh the you know, here’s the 4K cam. But anyway, um that uh the Bengals came twice, two times, very close to winning the Super Bowl, and Joe Montana was standing their way. And as we all know, they got their own Joe in the draft a couple of years ago. and they came close to beating the Los Angeles Rams. And now Joe Burrow came close to beating the Buffalo Bills last week to potentially start something special for this year. And now you’re sitting there and thinking, well, what this season could have been. And at least Burrow is back. And at least we see Joe Burrow being Joe Burrow on the field. And that’s at least something we can hang our hat on for next year and years and years and years until Joe Burrow stepped to the podium yesterday. And now Bengals fans have got to be wondering if the Cincinnati Bengals have broken Joe Burrow. And I don’t think I’m being overly dramatic about this. Not at all. I couldn’t believe this. Joe Burrow uh stepped to the podium yesterday and shared uh quite a bit. Um, we’ve got two sound bites to illustrate this and we want to unpack it before Curt Warner joins us. So, we’ll ask him about that. Uh, the first sound bite is about what, Mike Hoskins? Once again, about maybe no longer having fun playing football. Hit it. You know, if I want to if I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. Uh, you know, I’ve been through a lot. And if it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for? What was the changing point? Changing point. I’m not sure. I’m not sure there was a a singular moment or of time. It’s just uh reflection reflection on a lot of things that I’ve done and been through in my career. I think I’ve been through more than most. And um certainly not easy on the the brain or the body. So um just trying to have fun doing it again. That soundbite began with the words, if I wanted to keep doing this. If I want to keep doing this. And the question would be, wait a minute, you’re you’re questioning if you want to keep doing this like play now. Is the this playing at all or playing for the Bengals or let’s just hear the other soundbite. Um, and this one uh was another one that made you wonder um about if it’s more than just what’s going on on the field. seem you seem like there’s something on your mind. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but seem frustrating. Um, there’s just a lot of things going on right now. A lot of things going on right now. Football related. Personally, I’ll do both. Both. So, I’m going to I’m going to I’m going to try and give you the glass half full. You You know, that’s my default. That’s your MMO, man. Is that my superpower, if I may say? Sure is. Okay. I’m going to say that rehabbing an injury sucks. Yeah. For players like Joe Burrow who have now been through it over and over and over again. Yeah. Third time. And right now knowing that he has rehabbed and he has made it back and the Cincinnati Bengals are now playing out a string that I think he’s just frustrated. Now, the question is, does he reach the Andrew Luck level of I’m just no longer having fun because I’m constantly hurt and I have a situation here in professional football where I cannot be protected upfront and I’m constantly having my body break down on me and I don’t want to be spending any more time in my life when I’ve got my marbles and I’ve got my chicken. Right. He’s taking care of his mentals and his men. lentils and chicken which is you know uh very important it’s Maron speak right uh do I want to just keep doing this at all anymore and that’s that’s where we don’t know and that’s what I think the folks who are in the press room asking the questions of Burrow were just suddenly getting that alarm bell and trying to pick his brain about what are you talking about you’re pissed about your current situation thinking that you could be in a better one in the National Football League or are you frustrated with your current situation thinking you could just be a better one in life period? Yeah, because you have taken care of your chicken and while you still got your mentals, you need to figure out something else you want to do. But I also have heard Joe Burrow basically say, “I’m a football player. That’s why I’m coming back. That’s why I rehab my toe. That’s why I’m here for a team with only three wins on a Thanksgiving night. and I’m pissed that I wasn’t put out on the field the week before to maybe give us a fourth win before Thanksgiving. And you hear that, you’re trying to put it all together like what is up with Joe Burrow? And that’s why I can’t wait to have Curt Warner on to basically maybe interpret this like he speaks fluent quarterback. Um, and and maybe he can help us translate cuz right now I’m I’m hearing Joe Burrow and I’m wondering, okay, are you done playing for the Bengals or are you done playing period or is this just a frustrating moment that will pass? Who knows? I think I think it’s possible. It’s all the above. He’s frustrated. Obviously, it’s his second, third big injury where he’s had to miss considerable time. He’s 29 years old. Okay, we know Andrew Luck was around this age when he walked away. Under contract with Cincinnati through 2029. Carson Palmer we saw do something very similar. Threatened retired actually did and ended up keeping to play in in in different cities, right? Joe Burrow could be the first kind of big-time player to go the NBA route and say, “I want out. I want to go here.” And what does Cincinnati do? Do they blink? No, they don’t blink. I can only imagine also what the salary cap ramifications are in the NFL about trading somebody. So post June one designated trade. Uh it’d be a dead cap on Cincinnati of about $42 million. Well, I mean that is doable though. That’s half of what the dead cap from Russ was, right? Yeah. Yeah. But what just for one period or one year does it does it keep on going where the following year it’s the same and the f like what’s the total dead cap hit? Not sure about the total number but for 2025 you know for the end of this year. It’s it’s it’s somebody’s got to sit him down and say what do you need? What do you got? Well they got him his receivers. They kept those. That should you think would be enough to keep him happy. But it I keep going back to that. He’s not going to go to another situation where he’s going to have Jamar Chase and T. Higgins and Chase Brown. Well, but do you remember when he was um when he was when they were drafting Jamar Chase or had a chance to remember we saw that cartoon? Yeah. where at the at the top, you know, Jamar Chase is open current offensive line and he’s sacked and then there was a drawing underneath of Joe Burrow standing upright with Pen Su and wondering who’s going to catch the football, right? Like that was the that was the question. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

When are teams with great QBs going to understand they need to focus on the OL. When they don’t they are throwing away the big bucks they pay these guys.
If only there were a player or two on the bengals who could have taken a pay cut to pay a better offensive line
No. Burrow is a different breed. He’s honest with his answers. Don’t exaggerate that into comparing him with Luck or that he’s “broken”. That’s ridiculous
Burrows been broken. He doesn’t have it mentally. He shouldn’t complain the bengals did everything he wanted them to. You need more than a Quarterback and 2 receivers to win.
I love Joe Burrow, but he’s only on the field in reality 33% of the time I mean at what point can you blame only the Bengals obviously you can’t blame Joe for getting hurt but he’s injury prone. That’s just a fact.
The Chiefs aren’t even going to the playoffs. They are irrelevant. They’ve been irrelevant the past two years so what stop speaking on them everybody was comparing Prince Patrick to the goat. He didn’t even make it halfway to the Super Bowl rings. I mean three is a huge accomplishment, but it’s not seven.😂
Whatever happened to the ‘worlds greatest dad’ plaque? This set looks so sterile and corporate. Ah well that comes with being part of the evil empire
I could really see Burrow being hurt four weeks into the next season, no matter who we play for
Wait is this the new studio? I don’t like this
"Rehab" repeatedly also means an "opioid addiction" repeatedly
Sigh Not again………..
SMDH 🤦
This is an old story in Cincinnati. Carson Palmer was portrayed as a traitor when he refused to play another down here, and the same will happen to Burrow. Unfortunately, Mike Brown, the owner, refuses to spend the money necessary to field a full team, and everybody knows it. Three defenders were let go because the funds for free agents were seen as too steep, so Cincy's All Star QB needs to accumulate a several touchdown lead and pray that the defense holds–EVERY GAME. Then Burrow is left holding the bag and quietly apologizing for letting the city down when the lead doesn't hold.
Lately, even the national broadcasters are saying it out loud, that Cincinnati ownership is the, er, thriftiest in the NFL–and it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon. You gotta feel for Burrow; he's in a no-win situation.
Success is rare and fickle. When fortune smiles on your team, it behooves you to do what it takes to field the best team possible. You can't leave your once-in-a-lifetime success story standing on the field with only half the necessary tools.
The best ability is availability.
From that metric – Burrow is a BUST!
Ya I said it.
Rich, I'm shocked (shocked I tell you!) that you weren't impressed with the "reporters'" Pokemon questions for Burrow.
I hear that the Colts need a quarterback!
These organizations have seriously offended the Football Gods, as has the Dallas Cowboys. You need to appease them in order to have success.
Been through more than most?! Justin Herbert exists
I gotta say…meh. He had a bunch of fun at LSU. He sure was having fun when he was galavanting around the world and walking the catwalk in a fashion show. He had fun when he was almost winning the Super Bowl. He’s getting paid $50 million a year. Don’t be a sore loser. You want that paycheck then you gotta suck it up. Or walk away. I don’t feel bad for him. It’s not like the Bengals weren’t the the Bengals when he was drafted.
Like Myles you signed the contract bud
Am I the only one who has an issue with the headline of this article? Comes across RUDE AF towards Burrow to me. Make it look like he is some type of horse they preparing for the preakness.
Amen
Would you want to play for Cincinnati? Shame the owner is ruining a team with a great fan base (I'm not a Bengals fan but I admire their passion)
I just REALLY HOPE…the Brown family HEARS what Joe is saying and don't eff it up with him like they did with Carson…PLEASE MIKE, KATIE….do what it takes to keep Joe happy! He has the potential to be the best player the Bengals has EVER HAD! Help the man out with an o-line, a defense, a scout who can accurately draft good players and coaches that can get the most out of the players they have. PLEASE!!!
We didn't get a warning this clear from Andrew. Get it together Cincy – this dude is heart of the franchise. Lose him, and all bets are off as to how bad it goes.
Bengals need to clean out the front office and all coaches …then go get a defense like the patriots did
Someone needs to save this man. A team like atlanta or minnesota needs to just bite the bullet, trade whatever it takes, and get him as far away from the Bengals organization as possiblr
“If I’m not having fun, then what am I doing it for?” is a question that only millionaires get to ask about their job 😂
Some players peak early. He was the best college QB ever
Unlike Brady, who took a discount to make the team better, Burrow made them spend too much money on him and two top-tier receivers. Reap what you sow.
So he's tired of going to work in a bad environment like the rest of us!! Lol. He's still in his 20s. Toughness questions must not be on the Wundelich…
I don't feel for him. He demands that huge contract, then he demands huge contracts for his receivers which leaves the team nothing to pay for offensive linemen or defense.
This is Joe Burrow admitting they won't make the playoffs for a third year in a row, and he knows that Zac will be leaving after the season and he is not happy. He does not see Zac as the problem. Joe Burrow came back to save Zacs job.
It's time for JOE BURROW to call all the plays on the field during the game because he has a higher football IQ than Zac Taylor. Zac makes a better cheerleader than coach.
Palmer called this 3 years ago.
New setup sucks
you guys missing the point, Frat Boy coach has ruined JB's career…
Joe should never have tried to comeback and Frat would have been gone.
Watch idiots owners keep ZT the ultimate loser.
Joe's frustrated at the moment, but he's staying with the Bengals for another decade and winning multiple Super Bowls. The defense has improved the last month and the o-line has been good for 6 weeks. The Bengals' future is bright.
