They were sitting in the bottom of the basement in the Atlantic Division. Well, now they’ve moved up a couple spots and heck, they are two wins away from that top spot. Tampa at 34 points, sitting in spot number one. Toronto with 30 points, sitting way down below him. It’s a log jam in the East and it’s anybody’s game. All you got to do is win a couple. And I tell you, when we start ragging on players like we do, they end up getting hot. And I tell you, Joshua, Wah, and Laden all having a couple of pretty darn good games. On the D side, it’s going to be Morgan Riley with Oliver Ecman Larson, Jake McCay with newcomer, although not so new anymore. Troy Stetcher, and then Simone Benwis going to be paired up with Dakota Mermis, and Dennis Hill to be the Hilda Beast going to be the starter for the Maple Leafs here tonight. So, the question is, when is Wall coming back? That is a great question. He was only supposed to be out a week or so. So, while I don’t have an exact date, it’s not going to be long. All right, so those are the lineups. Now, the big question is, how do these two teams stack up against each other? Because with the Lightning in top spot, they must be so much better than Toronto, right? No. Well, yes, they have some players coming back from injury. When we look at their stats, they’re pretty close. Both teams continue to struggle with the man advantage on the power play. Toronto wet 14% 30th in the NHL. Tampa Bay just a couple ticks of a percentage above them at 15.9%. On the penalty kill, Toronto 81.5%, not bad, but Tampa Bay doing a really good job at 86.7%. So Toronto not very good on the power play and Tampa Bay very good on the penalty kill means well you got to step it up. Leafs got to step it up. DV8 what’s going on? Welcome in 89. No 89 tonight. Nikki Robertson riding the pine tonight. Coach actually was asked about Nick Robertson in his game. And what coach said is Nick Robertson as of late has kind of lost his edge, lost his step a little bit. Doesn’t have that same jump. But at the same time, coach turned around and said, “Well, you know what? Part of that is because of ice time. Ice time comes into play in moments like that.” And it’s uh it’s kind of funny to see, you know, coach saying Nick Robertson needs some help. Had some struggles. However, the uh the ice time definitely a factor in there. Uh but let’s see. We got Michael Drama. What’s going on? Going for those bolts tonight. Duke, what’s up? Jeffrey, hello there. They’ve moved up to top spot 57.1%. That’s pretty slick. Tampa Bay on the other hand, all the way down at 30th at 46%. Now, we know faceoffs doesn’t mean you’re going to win hockey games, but the better you do in the faceoff, the better chances you have, especially in the offensive zone if you can shoot right off the draw. When we talk about the goalenders, and unfortunately, we’re not getting the stellar matchup of Vasilelesi versilelesi verses, but Yonis Jansen is not too shabby. 5-4 at 285 goals against an 896 save percentage is well not the best in the world but hey he’s doing okay. Dennis Hillby he has eight games played. He’s only won one lost two. He’s got two overtime losses. He’s only started four games. He’s uh he’s racking it up. His save percentage right now 927 and a 251 goals against. So, Hill to be the monster putting up some decent numbers and hopefully that is a trend that can continue in the right direction. Where does Tavaris stand in that faceoff percentage? Probably pretty darn high. I don’t know if I have that not that stat right off the cuff here, but Tavvaris in the faceoff has been stellar. He’s been the guy that Toronto relies on a lot. I want to see Douglas verse Matthews in a scrum. Oh man, I’d like to see Matthews wake up is what I’d like to see. We know he’s been improving. Uh Carolina, Florida, Pittsburgh, Toronto beat with Columbus and St. Lewis as well. Now that we know who’s playing tonight, we know how the teams compare against each other. We’re all set and ready to rock. But we need to know who are the officials for tonight’s game. Should we expect a well called game or is this something we’re going to be kicking and screaming about all night long? Well, the officials tonight, Franuis St. Lauron, I actually like him. We got Graham Skiller as well on the line calling the icons in the off sides. is Kyle Flemington and Matt McFersonson. So, if you’re a fan of any of those, you’re in luck. If you’re not, well, I’m sorry, but this should be an important game. It is an important game as the Maple Leafs look to move up a little bit more in the standings. We got a whole bunch of teams lock tied at 30 points in the Atlantic. 34 points is the leader with Tampa Bay. Toronto needs to step up and pick up the two points tonight. They need a couple of points because big things will come. They’ve been doing well. They’ve been playing better. They’ve been working it and things are lighting it up. A couple of weeks ago, everybody on the internet was ripping this team apart, saying, “They’re done. They’re done. They’re done. They’re done.” Well, hey, they put their heads down. Brendan Hegel, one of these guys who likes the game-winning goals. He’s got four of them at this point this season. And that is pretty darn impressive for the Toronto Maple Leafs, their leaders. It’s John Tavvaris leading the way in goals. 13 goals for JT. Matty Ny leading the way in assists with 21 assists. And William Knander leads the team in points, 32 points. And of course, you can’t count out Bobby McMahon. He’s got two game-winning goals himself. And I got to tell you, I like uh I like Bobby McMahon and what he’s bringing a whole lot. Is it just me or has Vasileleski only been playing forever? Yeah, he has been playing for a while. He has certainly been playing for a while. He was actually skating uh with the red jersey on working out looking good. So hopefully we’ll get Marshall Rafi back. I would love the Leafs to bring him up and put him in to see him get going because that would be that would be huge. I’m a big Marshall Rafi fan and I would love to see him to get into some of the some of the games here. Of course, Toronto, they’ve got a pretty uh a pretty loaded lineup, if you will, and their size is something that they’ve been growing with. They’re getting bigger and bigger, but they have to start using their size. We know Tampa Bay has got some skill. We know they’ve got some speed. We know they can muck it up as well. So, this is one where Toronto really needs to get things going. They need to use the physicality to try to get Tampa off the game because if they can get Tampa to start getting involved in the little cheap shots and dirty plays and that’s going to take away their speed and then Toronto will have a good opportunity to jump all over them. Uh so I’ll tell you William Knander is one of those players where it looks like he’s floating around. He’s just kind of cruising. Not much is going on as they have they have folks repelling from the rafters. Folks repelling from the rafters down to the ice surface right now as they’re doing this military celebration. So, a little repelling down which is cool. I guess they’re delivering the ceremonial first puck. Um, but Nelander, you know, he tends to be just coasting around, cruising around, but man, he can score, right? He puts on points. He can put up points and he is putting up points. He leads our team in 24 games, right? Leafs have played 28. This is 29 tonight. 28 games. Knander’s only played 24 and he’s got 32 points. So, whatever he’s doing, it’s working. He’s got only 11 goals. Would like to see his goals a little higher, but he’s got 21 assists. Nelander is finding ways to get points on the board now. He also needs more shots, right? And the team as a whole needs more shots. Nelander only has 53 shots at this point. Hey there, Brian. What’s going on? Welcome in. 53 shots for Nelander at this point where Tavvaris and Austin Matthews are at 85 and 83. So, I would like to see Nelander up with those guys. Maybe not as high, but he should be at least in the 70s for sure. So, Matthews and Tavvaris certainly taking the most shots. One thing Toronto has started doing which has uh improving in their wins, they’re using their defense. They’re passing it back to the point. We’re starting to get some defensive scoring which is great. Riley with four goals, Ecman Larson with four goals. Uh McCabe with three, Ster with a goal. So, we’re starting to get some shots and goals by defense. Riley has 53. Morgan Riley has just as many shots as William Knander does, right? How crazy is that? Willie is just Moody. That’s funny. He It is It is frustrating. And yeah, Moody player. It does come through. It does show like that. That’s That’s a good a good way of of expressing it. Moody. And the story, if you haven’t been paying attention or you haven’t had it pop up in your views, is the stadium they’re building for hockey is not finished. And depending on what reports you read, it’s nowhere close to being finished. Now, this is no surprise. Any Olympic season coming, the Olympic venues typically don’t get finished up till like just before the Olympics, right? We’ve seen this with swimming facilities. We’ve seen it with skating facilities. We’ve seen it with the the home stadium for track and field. We’ve seen this a lot, right? Where Olympic venues just don’t get ready in time, but they end up getting done. Hey, Stella, what’s going on? Good evening. Welcome in. And so, in this story, it’s the ice facility. The rink is not going to be done. But what makes it worse is they might be able to finish it. like all Olympic buildings, we expect it to be done, but they’re building it not to international hockey ice standards. So, as you know, for those that watch international hockey, international ice is usually a much wider, it’s just a bigger ice surface. And it actually changes the game because you can come out and be a hard-hitting, physical team, but when you come to that bigger ice, you have to have the endurance. You have to be able to skate. You have to be able to move the puck. So, okay, it’s fine. So, it’s not going to be international size. Maybe it’ll be NHL size because at least then we get the same quality of hockey that we’ve been seeing over here. Well, no, it’s not even going to be NHL size. It’s going to be about 3 to four feet smaller than an NHL size rink. Now, when you have players that are like six to 65 to 67, these huge bodies, and you’re making an even smaller rink, it’s going to be a problem. They’re working on Italian time to get it built, right, Dave? Um, I’m sure the building’s going to get done, right? It will get finished. My concern, though, is going to be this ice size. I don’t think we’re going to get the Olympic quality of hockey we were hoping for. Todd, thank you for the follow. because it’s going to be a much smaller ice surface. So, the big rumors are going around is that the NHL is not happy. They are none too pleased and especially if now we’re not even going to get NHL size ice. We’re going to get kind of shorter and a little bit wider. Um, they’re not happy. Now, all the rules say they’re they may not send the NHL players to go. I don’t think that’s going to happen. The NHL players are going regardless in my opinion. I would be absolutely shocked at the 11th hour if they turned around and said, “Nope, we’re not submitting an NHL caliber roster.” I would be shocked. But the vast amount of NHL players for all the countries that are going, you would think that the uh the ice would at least at least be NHL size. So that’s the story that’s going on. They don’t do hockey. I know. Uh it’s but it’s crazy. It’s crazy. That’s funny. Uh yes. So uh let’s see here. Uh international hockey doesn’t rule goons. It doesn’t Bart. It doesn’t. You got to move. And so it’s funny because they talk about Tom Wilson, you know, potentially being on on the Canadian team. And I know Tom Wilson is having a good year, but it’s hard for me to picture someone like Tom Wilson being on an Olympic team. Like for me, it just doesn’t it just doesn’t work. Hey, spaceman. Connor Baddard with 40 points. Conor McDavid up there with 42. So when you take a look at these top dogs, right? And how does this stand for team Canada when you look at Nathan McKinnon number one, Celabbrini number two, McDavid number three, Baddard number four, your top four point getters. It’s pretty impressive. Nathan McKinnon 24 goals so far this year. Leads the league in goals. Morgan Geeky with 22. Good for him. Connor Baddard with 18 goals. So, we used to go there and curl all the time. And it is it is so First of all, the rocks are heavier than you think. And there is a very very straightforward technique of of pushing off and sliding. And when you slide with the rock, you can’t just turn the handle. You It’s just like ever so slight ever so slight of a turn. And then if you’re skipping and you got to know like when to call to sweep, when not to sweep, you know, it it is so technical, but it’s impressive. You tried and you sucked. It’s hard. Because the first thing they tell you is when you put on and usually, you know, if you’re going for the first time, you’re not you don’t have the special shoe to wear, you stick your foot in the thing and they put like the special tape on your shoe that you can slide. And they always tell you when you’re stepping on the ice, don’t step first with the foot with the tape. And there’s always somebody you see, they step with the with the foot with the tape and they foot goes up and they go flying. So, you can always spot the new curlers, but uh it’s a lot of fun. And curler is a if you’re a drinker, curling is a very big drinking culture. A very big drinking culture. So, it’s uh curling is about bonding and and having a good time and pounding them back. I thought it was so awesome and that’s why I love hockey fans so much. Whether you’re a Leafs fan, a Habs fan, or an Arizona Coyotes fan, uh we are all the same. We love our teams. We love our sports, and some of the comments are just so funny. Uh Nick, what’s going on? From my perspective, I think Austin has been playing catchup after coming back from his injury. He can play um 20 minutes a night if you need him to. He’s just one of these guys, an absolute workhorse, and I think he is a a brilliant signing, almost a steal here for Toronto. All right, let’s if we take a look if we pull this up and we look at the way kind of the standings are situated and I know we can’t make a whole lot because right now there’s so many teams clumped together and you know two points or four points is the difference of being in top spot verse bottom spot. But you know, the Edmonton Oilers, they’re a little bit better than a 500 team, right? 13-1, five overtime losses. Uh, for years the waiver wire was a nightmare. If Toronto waved anyone, they would immediately get picked up. It’s nice for Yeah, it is nice for a change of luck, you know, and I like there’s those stories and I forget the players name now off the top of my head, but there was a guy last year who bounced around to like three or four teams. Every time they would get him, you know, they’d they’d have to stay one day on the roster and then they could wave him again. And every time he got waved, another team picked him up. He bounced around like crazy. Yeah, waiverwire can be can be a bit of a nightmare if you’re one of those bubble players. Head of my Devils, lose to the Bruins, five straight losses. Listen, Boston, while Boston started the season in not in great shape, they’ve been really good. Boston’s in second place in the Atlantic right now. Well, they’re technically tied with Tampa Bay with 34 points. So, they are one of the better teams this year. So, when when you talk about, you know, teams, Boston is up there. But it’s funny that, you know, the Atlantic is one of the hardest, in my opinion, one of the hardest divisions, but this year it’s it’s it’s just not. It’s all the Metropolitan Division. The Met is so good. Washington, Carolina, the Islanders all so good. Pittsburgh and New York Rangers off to decent starts, all with 34 points or more. or the Metropolitan Division certainly racking up the winds right now in the Atlantic is struggling, but that will that will change around. Hey Benny, what’s going on? What do you think of Montreal this season? Montreal is much improved. You know, we talked about Montreal last year. Montreal, they’ve got a ton of talent, a lot of young talent. Love what I’m seeing in Demadov and Hudson. Two great performers that are just getting started. and you pair those with the likes of Caulfield and and whatnot and Suzuki, you got a great core there. You have a a great group. Um, and they’ve started to put it together. They’re they’re winning some games. Much improved hockey team. The question is, can they stay healthy and can they play this way for for their entire run? Um, the one question I had for Montreal was how their uh their goalending was going to hold, right? How their goalending was going to maintain. And I and I still think, you know, that is a valid question. Jacob Dobish, who by the way is is ridiculous. I was at his debut game against Florida um in Florida when he wiped them 4- nothing. He’s 10 and4 this season which is great but he’s got a 303 goals against average and an 890 save percentage. So he’s got a lot of wins but his numbers could be better. Sam Montabo, same thing. He’s five and six and his numbers are not good. So for me the question is Jacob Dolbish is the future but how you know how are they going to support these goalenders moving forward but Montreal a much improved team. Utah, Seattle, San Jose, um there’s a lot of a lot of good things going on in the National Hockey League. When it comes to some of these fringe teams that in the past uh have been weird to watch, of course, Logan Culie with the 14 goals, Clayton Keller, 17 assists, 26 points. I mean, Dylan Gunther has been wild to watch for Utah. Um, when you talk about San Jose, holy smokes, we talked about Cabbrini already today. Cabbrini is just lighting it up. Will Smith is going to have a bright future there. They’ve put a great team together. Um, Brad, you’re spot on when you talk about that side of it. Um, Broski, you know, has not been great. He has not been great at all. Um the Anaheim Ducks, yes, Anaheim has been outstanding. Leo Carlson 16 goals. Troy Terry with uh 23 assists. Cutter Godier has been amazing this crazy rivalry between Anaheim and and San Jose. I mean, that would be so wild to watch. Uh user says, “Who wins the Flames versus Sabres?” Um I would bet any team against the Sabres. The Sabres are going to win some hockey games. They are going to win, but yeah, I would never bet on Buffalo to win. Sorry Sabre fans. I I definitely would take the Flames in that one.
