Tocchet’s systems

  1. Great share. Thought this was interesting.

“Offensive zone entries: Where is the open ice? If it’s in front of the defeneman, there’s creative license to make a play. If the defender(s) pressures and there’s “soft ice” (unguarded space) behind the defense, it calls for a dump-in and forechecker pursuit.

The goal is NOT “dump and chase” hockey. Rather, it’s read and react with a chance to attack with pace. Players look first for where the open ice is. If there’s room, the Flyers attackers look for direct passes. It’s about quick movement to create high-danger chances.Put another way, it’s a give-and-go attack mentality if there’s space. However, if it’s a 1-on-2 or tightly pressured situation, that’s where chip-and-chase applies.

It’s all about recognition and reaction to when to take a calculated risk vs. when to play it safer.”

  2. The Flyers have a better record under Tocchet than Torts.

However the Flyers now have Zegras not Farabee.
Also we have Vladar and not Fedotov and Kolosov.

To a lesser impact, the Flyers now have Dvorak, Grebenkin and Andrae and don’t have Frost, Laughton, Poehling and Risto (so far).

Also we are a very young team with improving players throughout the roster.

Who knows how much of an impact Tocchet’s systems have had vs the roster changes.

My gut tells me Zegras and Vladar are by far the most important changes.

  3. It’s down to execution of dump and chase. Watching the golden knights, they mostly carried the puck in, but when they had to dump it, it was a soft dump not a hard rim around. This meant the goalie had no chance at the play so their forwards were able to be more effective

  4. Zegras is a nice story with the realism that the team isn’t using him as a center, so long-term, they still have the same top of the lineup gap there.

What more than offsets this in my mind is Michkov under Brad Shaw was >>>> Michkov under Tocchet. Michkov’s end-of-season led me to believe he was about to have the breakout seasons that Bedard, Carlsson, Celebrini and Gauthier are having. Under Tocchet, he’s going in completely the opposite direction.

Vladar is a nice story and the space now for Andrae to develop, are all good. I still have zero confidence in this organization’s plan and think that all they are set up to do is repeat the Giroux era of sustained bubble-tier irrelevance.
