Micah Parsons looks ahead to Denver Broncos: ‘We got our hands full’
any altitude training at all? Do you do you kind of know what you’re getting into this week? Oh, no. Be honest with you. No, but you know, um I just hear about it through like some of my NBA friends and things like that, how the difference going to Denver and especially in the finals. So, it’s pretty interesting, but I’m excited to see how it feels. You got to experience things once and this will be something cool to experience. Mike, obviously you don’t go up against their defense, just like quarterbacks don’t go up against each other, but when there’s two like premier defenses in the same game, is there some I don’t know, challenge the right word, but is there some thing where you want to, hey, show that we’re maybe better than them? Yeah, I mean, there’s a there’s always a certain pride when you’re playing against another, whether it’s another good rusher, another good defense. Um, I’m pretty sure even QBs, you know, when there’s a debate about MVPs and uh who’s going to be the best quarterback today, that’s when the game there’s always those type of self uh pressure that you put on yourself to outperform the other defense or other players. So, you know, that’s definitely going to be involved in this game. I know they got some really good guys over there and uh I’m excited to see whose front’s going to play better. If you guys discussed this week that you see this Broncos team, they’re in games and then fourth game. I mean, they put up 33 in the fourth quarter against the Giants all on offense. You’ve discussed that it’s going to be a four quarters game against this team. Yeah. I mean, we know it’s going to be a fourth quarter game, but you know, I think at the same time, we not the Giants and any other defense they face this year, they ain’t have us, so they ain’t played nobody. I don’t think they play anybody like us outside of Houston. So, you know, and you know, we played a little bit different of a system than Houston. Houston plays more as of attack front. Um, and there’s different variations of how they run our defense. So, you know, I’m excited to go and see what we do against this team. Piggybacking off that though, I know you were maybe a little frustrated after the Bears game with them scoring on three straight drives in that second half. So, how do you just allow a team not to be able to get back in it like that? Um, you know, we have to do a better job getting off the field going back to back 10 plus play drives. Obviously, that that weighs in on you and I think they saw that and uh I think guys started getting a little winded, a little bodied. Uh, you know, it’s a lot of that was a real physical and body game and I think it started getting a toll on a couple guys. But, you know, at that point they after experience I just feel like you know some guys built a callous you build a callous after going through it. So, um, and I mean it’s something we’ve been experiencing all year, long drives, making teams earn it. You know, they earn it, they earn it, but, um, we just got to limit the explosive plays. What have you seen from, you know, Bo Nick’s a young quarterback, but it seems like he plays with a lot of confidence. Mhm. He does. Uh, since, you know, he came into college, I remember him coming out being like the first PB ever to start as a freshman at Auburn. like, you know, he’s always been an impressive player and, uh, I think, you know, he’s taking taken a big jump year, too, high, protects the ball, uh, not taking sacks, getting rid of the ball. So, it’s going to be a very challenge for all of us. I think Shawn Payeyton is doing a hell of a job coaching him and put him in better situations to use his skill set, whether it’s his legs in the run game, legs in the pass game. Uh, so, you know, we got our hands full. Michael, um, when you watched, you know, when you were in Dallas and Dak sort of kind of evolved and got better and better, do you see similar progression with Jordan? I know it’s your first year playing with him. Yeah. Having watched him from afar and now seeing where do you see him having taken his game to the next level? You know, it it’s about where he’s at and where he’s come from. Um, got to understand a guy who’s took over the job a few years ago and I just think he’s doing some absurd things. I think his confidence, the throws he’s making, the ability to stand under pressure. He’s doing some things that guys aren’t doing and they’re in year nine and 10, you know what I mean? So, I think he’s progressed early on and it could be because of his uh the guy he was under for so long, you know? So, he has this confidence and swagger about him and the way he carries himself. I think he’s just going to keep getting better and better and even the things that you know himself he’s like man I leave some things out there that I really want to clean up and I think he’s going to start you know getting those opportunities too. Are you of the belief that you know great players make their legacies in the playoffs? Like is that is that something that you’re you think or is it you know I mean he’s had a little playoff success but I’m sure he’s looking for more. You know, you know, it’s very it’s very hard cuz you could be a great player and never be on the playoff team and you can never have a winning season. You could be a really good player and the team kind of just hold you and they have the rights to you. So, you’re in bad situations. So, it kind of takes away from how great a person could be given an opportunity. But, you know, I would say uh I think you can always have a good legacy, but I think legends are made, you know, in the playoffs. Like I think you look at Brady, I mean he’s a legend cuz it’s rings, Jordan rings. It all comes down to making it to the big game, winning the big game. When you think of the legends, that’s what it comes down to. The Shacks, the Kobes, that’s what se separates from Reggie Miller and and you know, all those other guys who, you know, come close to Barkclays. So, you know, you can have a great legacy. I mean, look at Charles Barkley. That’s one of the greatest legacies in basketball, but you know, the championship, that’s kind of what, you know, people care about when you lose that big game. And that’s what it comes down to. So, uh, you got the legends and you got the legacy. So, I think they’re they’re two different places in the sports world. Micah, speaking of legends, you’ve been compared to Reggie White many times. Just what do you what goes through your head when you hear your name next to his? You know, it’s a it’s a uh it’s honestly a blessing. You know, I’ve been compared to the Reggie, the LTS, the Derek Brooks, the, you know, pretty much any of the greatest players you could think of. And you know, it’s just it’s just always a reminder that, you know, I got to find a way to keep creating my own name, my own dynasty, and uh making my own path. You know, obviously you take the blessings, the good with the good and the bad with the bad. But at some point, you kind of want to separate and be like, okay, he made his stamp, his legacy here, too. So, you know, so that way the next person that maybe get traded or come here, they’ll be the next Micah and I’ll be the comparison. So, you know, I think that’s always the goal. Okay. So, I’ve been here that long. Reggie would line up over the right tackle, give him a shoulder, then put the club or the swim. I was watching your game last weekend, re-watching. It’s amazing how often you get past your block with just your hands. Did you learn that early on that you can get this done without having to use a shoulder pad? Just your hand movement on guys. Um, your leverage. Yeah, I would say it’s so hard to explain. Like some of it is God-given and some of it is just anticipation. And uh I would just say it comes down to who’s going to throw the first punch. Like I look at it like a boxing match when I’m with these guys. Are they going to throw their hands? Are they going to let me punch them? How are we going to play this game today? But I always got to come forward. And I think that’s what makes me different. Like I might be short. I’m not as big as Reggie. I’m not as big as the JJ Watts or the TJ Watts or the Mas Garretts um of this league, but um I’m always coming forward. I’m never looking to go around. Sometimes it’s almost like martial arts with you. I mean, the way I see you get past these guys. Yeah. Uh it’s creative. It’s creative. I mean, there’s just big dudes like But like I said, you got to take the fight to the fight. Like I think a lot of old linemen like they want to be bullies. Like they want to hit you late. They want to bring you time to the ground. They want to step on you. They want to hold you. Hold you. But uh I like, you know, I always hate the bullets. Michael, you’ve often referred to football as a chess match going back and forth. They got a really better head coach than Sean Kane. Great defense that we’ve discussed and a good offense as well with a lot of pieces. Does this game feel like it feel more of a chess match going back and forth? A lot of strategy involved. There’s some strategy, but the one thing that’s different between chess and the game is um you kind of know what your pawns and your your knights and your queens and your rooks can do. It’s hard when you you got a queen that can go everywhere. So, there ain’t no uh this ain’t no you know what I mean? like this ain’t that like you can control this one like I don’t got to worry about a pawn slowing me down if I want to capture a pawn like because it could take my queen none of your pawns are taking me you know what I mean so uh this is real life like strategy strategy but everything strategy is good until you get punched so that’s how that’s kind of always been a motto you know Rob was talking about championships a while ago now that you’ve been here for four months or whatever it is and you guys have won a bunch of games here in a row and you’re playing pretty good what do you think about your chances and you feel better about your Super Bowl chances now than maybe you did when you show up here in September? Well, it’s to be determined. Usually the best teams win December. We won one in December. We got to win. This is another big one in December. We got one next week. So, just the one week at a time like to look forward, you can say, “Yeah, we’re we have a hell of a chance to do some great things.” But now I’m looking across the league and I see a lot of other teams playing some really good football, too, especially in this NFC division. So, it’s just about who plays the best cuz everyone knows football is all about matchups, you know, like look how the Falcons just upset, you know, like football is a very unpredictable sport and the only thing we can control, like I told you guys last week, is our own fate. So, right now, we’re the number two seed. How can we stay there or even get to number one? And we got to win the rest of these games up to even decide or even look forward to playoffs and playoff success. Have you found at all disrespected by you know media members, opposing offenses, anything when feel like they haven’t talked about you guys being such a good defense when you are. I feel like we just keep talking about how big this Denver defense is. But like Rob alluded to earlier, you guys are also a really good defense. Like they also should feel pretty, you know, respected going. Have you felt disrespected at all? Always. We see it. We see it. We we we just look at it and you chart it down. I mean this is what what are they 11 and two? Yeah, it’s 11 and2 team. We got a great opportunity. We had a great OP against the Bears last week and their rushing attack and I feel like we did a pretty good job for the most part. Now we have another great opportunity to go, you know, go against another very good offense and do what we do best. And then like I said, respect is earned. We’re going to go out and respect it every week. If you want to run the ball, run boot all game. Well, we got to prepare and we’re going to make adjustments for that. So, we’ll be prepared uh come Sunday. here. You’re an NBA fan, so you know some guys embellish to get foul calls. Do you think that has that ever crossed your mind to try and get a holding call to embellish because you don’t really do that right now? Cuz you can embellish and still get 20 in basketball. You can embellish and have zero sacks and zero pressures in the National Football League. So there’s a that’s why, you know, I think fans prefer to watch football than basketball because you actually can play through contact. We’re not flopping and this is a physical sport for a reason. So you’re nervous out of it. You just said in terms of where this team is in terms of competing for championships, you said it’s still to be determined, but you look at this stretch of games, you got Broncos sandwich in between the Bears and plus the rest of the stretch. You feel like the way this schedule will play out, it’ll show you, you know, what this team is when it’s all said and done. It’ll show you our weaknesses, our strengths. Where do we need to get better? Where can we where can we solidify our roster to make this last push? It’s coming closely, but we’re playing against a lot of playoff teams. I mean, I think we played a playoff team since week four. The Panthers are now in the playoffs. They’re leading their division. So, like the teams that we lost to are championship teams. The Eagles are winning their division. I mean, the Browns, I mean, they’re still a good team. They give every team a fight. I mean, things sometimes just come up short. But these teams is very good teams. I think we played a damn near a playoff team almost every game this season. At least a caliber of a team. Like Cowboys are right there. All right. So, you know, we’ve been tested and tested. We’re getting guys healthy. We’re getting guys back. So, we’re going to see where we’re at at the end of this.
