General Manager Patrik Allvin Media Availability following Canucks trade with Wild (Dec 12, 2025)
Hi Patrick. Thanks for doing this here on this Friday evening. Uh monumental day obviously for the front office and the organization. Uh just tell us a little bit about the timeline of how this ultimately came to be. Yeah. Um yeah, it’s definitely a a not an easy day for the for the franchise here. Uh Quinn use has been a big part of the organization and and a great person and great hockey player has a lot of record. Um tough tough tough uh day. Uh but we’re also excited about the return of the the players we got here, the younger players and continue to build with them from Minnesota. Um obviously uh a deal like this doesn’t come through on on just one day. So, it’s it’s been going on um um for a couple weeks here where we felt that uh this is unfortunately um where we where we where we heading with with Quinn and trying to get uh to maximize the return for for Quinn use. Go next to Adam Kerenblat, the hockey news. Uh hi Patrick. Uh thanks for doing this. Um, can you talk to us a little bit about kind of the discussions that you’ve had with Hughes and maybe his agents over the last uh whether it’s been weeks or months that have kind of led up to this decision uh today? Well, I believe this is something that you you probably go back even even a year ago uh when this uh uh started to come to our attention that this might be um the path that the queen wants to go. Um, and we uh were hoping uh the the the ownership uh was trying to do everything uh and we were trying to do everything to convince him to to stay and and work through it. But uh we felt that um when we were not able to do it, that’s where we started the process of looking uh to see what uh potential uh destination that would be out there and what potential teams that uh that uh can come up with the best uh return for the Vancouver Canucks moving forward. Gemma Carson Smith, Canadian Press. Thanks, Nick. Obviously Quinn’s been the captain for a while now. What how do you break this news to the team and how do you manage uh any emotions of your other players moving forward here? Well, it’s it’s definitely tough to lose your captain and and lose uh Quinn use and no doubt about it. Uh uh saying that I I think we we have a a lot of younger players uh coming in here. Uh we have some older guys here too. So, uh, definitely will be a shared, um, uh, leadership part here moving forward and something that, uh, that I’ll talk with Adam foot on. Chris Faber, kox.com. Hey, Pat. Hey, Patrick. Just wondering if you can give us some thoughts on Zeve Buham and then what you’re getting here in the defenseman. Yeah, Zeve is a young defenseman that uh won uh two world juniors, won the national championship in Denver. He’s uh extremely talented offensive-minded defenseman that in a very short period of time here experienced a playoff last year when he was down in in Denver and stepping right into the National Hockey League playing for Minnesota and then following up here this year where I think he is uh he looks stronger, more composed uh where scouting staff have followed him here or exciting the path is coming. is still very young. Uh, and we know that for a defenseman, it takes some time, but he definitely has the the ability to quarterback a power play here. And, uh, we’re really excited to continue to work with him here. Derek Van Dist, NHL.com. Patrick, thank you for doing this. Appreciate it. I just want to ask you, you got some really good young players in in in return. You got a first round draft pick. I just want to ask you what the direction of the team is now. Are you looking at rebuilding? Is it a reload or or how kind of are you approaching kind of the rest of the season and maybe the seasons beyond? Good question. Um we’re we’re excit as I said we were excited about the the youth that we got in return here and we kind of retooling, rebuilding. Uh one thing that we always try to do here has been trying to bring in players that are 25 and younger and and will continue to grow here. We have a lot of younger players in our lineup here due to injuries that might might have been forced in a little bit earlier than we projected, but they’ve done really well. So, uh we’re we’re continue our coaching staff will continue to to uh teach and work with the younger players here and continue to grow uh grow as they’re uh as as we as we move along here. Uh but definitely uh the plan is is to uh to use our first first round pick in draft uh as of now. For those of you just joining us, please use the raise hand function to indicate you have a question. We’ll go to Jason Bruff, Sportsnet 650. Patrick, do you have a culture problem that needs to be fixed? A culture problem uh on our team? Yeah, I mean you had a you had a big fight between uh two of your leaders, JT Miller and Elias Person. One of them had to be traded. You had a head coach that decided not to leave and now you had a captain that uh that didn’t want to stay. Do you have a culture problem? I don’t believe so. I I don’t think that’s the reason why uh why Quinn use uh is traded here today. Uh I think uh uh I and I I have a lot of respect for for JT Miller as well. Uh what he went through last year on his personal side uh which I as an organization respect a lot. Uh we’re very excited uh with the leadership group and what Adam is is building here um the players we got in um through the draft over the last couple of years and how they integr integrated with uh with our team here. We’ll take a followup from Jeff Patterson. Just along those lines, Patrick, uh, not even two years ago, 50 wins, 109 points, all the allstars, individual awards, and you’re dead last in the National Hockey League as you sit here, uh, and had to trade your captain. I mean, how difficult is it for you as one of the stewards of this group to to see where you are as a franchise right now? Yeah, uh, you’re right. I thought we had a great team. We had a great run. Uh we’re uh very excited where we were and uh and unfortunately things uh things happened and and uh if you’re going to be able to uh adapt, adjust um retool um uh and I think we we that’s what uh what we started with uh with last year in the trade and and uh unfortunately today here was another um step in that direction. um try to to again get get the new wave, new younger players in here and and and start to continue to build a championship team and we’ll take a follow-up from Gemma Carson Smith. On that note, Patrick, what’s your message to fans? I just reading social media, which is obviously a toxic environment, but people are are concerned about the state of the team right now. What’s your message to those folks who are concerned? Um, well, I I think they should be excited about the youth that that’s coming in here. They should be excited about uh the championship in Abbottzford last year and the growth of those players. uh you see them in the lineup here uh today and uh uh I can’t say enough about the fans in Rogers and the support for the team. They they’re sharing every night and the players uh they feel it. I think the resiliency and and the compete has been here for the team uh going through uh adversity with injuries uh and uh we’ll just continue uh to build a franchise uh franchise uh championship team here with uh with younger players and and uh continue to push forward.
General Manager Patrik Allvin meets with the media Friday evening acquiring forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Öhgren, defenceman Zeev Buium and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft from the Minnesota Wild.

SELL THE TEAM.
fire. them all
Can't even listen to him any longer. Had to turn it off..
We have had one constant .. Ownership. I’d be dropping my season tickets if I had any. Been since the Sedins left since we were competitive.
My heart is broken. I am so tired of seeing these stars traded away to other teams. You don't trade a player like Hughes, and if you do you better get more than they got. It's just sad really. It's like the Canucks are allergic to winning. I am 45 years old and still waiting for the Canucks to win the cup and at this rate, I am not sure I will live to see that ever happen.
Well done Patrick, you won this one, handily. Hughes is great, but your return is better as a whole.
So if they are serious about rebuilding , the question is who should go next? I can answer that. Francesco Aquilini. And if he had any respect for the fans or the city he would have left decades ago!!!!!🙃🙃
Alvin's fake smile when asked about the culture problem on the team. He did NOT like that question.
Culture problem from the media, what a joke. Sorry it hasn’t worked out and this trade is a good move. Some folks have to go.
"do you have a culture problem, alvin? is it a culture prob? come on bub, admit it"
Based on their track record, they are going to trade out their first rounders for another 25 years old project tomorrow.
i would have liked to know if the new guys will be on this road trip.
DO NOT take any shortcuts. Do it right. Don't trade away any picks.
Rutherford has ruined this team. Obviously. Up 3-2 against Edmonton in the playoffs. Miller gone, Zadorov not signed, Hughes traded. Players that show up when it matters in exchange for…cough cough. Quick, who did they get for Miller? Exactly!!
Dude dont tell us how we should feel or be excited about. You're incompetent and you do have a culture problem
And around we go again on the Canucks Carousel of mediocre. I hope I am wrong (this time)!
DO NOT TRADE THAT FIRST ROUND PICK YOU INCOMPETENT DUMMIES
Great trade. Sometimes is just not a fit. that's life. Hope he will be happy in Minnesota.
Over under 10 jerseys get tossed on the ice, the remainder of the season?
How much could you have gotten if Rutherford haven’t flapped his yap about Quinn wanting to play with his brothers
There is no more leadership… Petty can't lead unfortunately. Demko just always injured. Garland and Sherwood become your most dynamic players… leaving a huge load for Rossi to carry.
This season sucks. First we’re dead last in the league, now this, trading our electrifying captain away. WHY? Hughes was expressing his disappointment and frustration after last night’s loss to Buffalo, and in response, the management just THROWS him out of the team. Just like that. This is just utterly disrespectful. It’s a darn shame and depressing how this team has become.
I think this season’s done for.
The Canucks from day one have been a total clown show. Aquillini should sell the team! He is a disgrace!!!!!!
Possibly the worst trade in Canucks history. Everyone is getting fired
Another L for the franchise that’s bin cursed since the potential Gretzky trade …
Second worst captain in Canucks history, amazing to watch on skates, until he threw the puck away anyway, but his grumpy attitude and poor body language. He didn't want to be here, it was clear. Good riddance.
Change management and rebuild new team
This is not about a retool. This is about a piece ahead of management.
Management has made some insane decisions and most likely huge mistakes.
If we keep using the word retool we are literally fucked for another 15 years.
This isn’t about a retool this is about a rebuild.
Trevor Linden was correct.
Ownership can’t see past that.
This is the most unfortunate thing for Canucks fans to watch unfold.
Who in their right mind wants to even watch a game at Rogers now. ..
Culture problem for sure. It's so easy to spot. Unfortunately it stems from the owners. Just look at their family culture. Every kid supposedly hates their parents guts in the family. Wife said he beat their kids. Then we all know of the blueberry situation.
Thx god the team has the intelligence to start the rebuild now! Go for McKenna. Now trade everyone over 24 years old
Faber carrying water for his employer now.. definitely not a journalist that's for sure.
Dude. Fire this clown. Every GM picked by the owner are just clowns and yes people to the owner. It's a joke. This organization is a joke.
Fans should be excited? Are you kidding me? You're dead last in the league, have some f'n accountability.
Culture problem
Definitive Worst trade in team history that tops the previous worst trade you made when you traded JT for a fragile player that would go down if you stared at him the wrong way. Two years ago an electric team with team scoring at will and fans cheering player names every shift… now gutted.
This has to be enough BS with this team. So frustrating to watch you dismantle it. If it's a rebuild then get on with it
Worst ownership worst management
Yet we're holding on to the cancer
Culture and the fanbase is the biggest problem
Ownership is clearly the issue, they cant get a practice facility for a reason, reputation… Ownership should stick to fruit, sell the team. Management is full of it, Allvin is a lame duck GM. Horvat, Miller, Hughes. I dont know what happened at that all star game, but it all went down hill after that. At the very least it would be nice to get a full honest account of wtf has been going on behind closed doors.
Left two tickets on the front of my car window in the parking lot last game vs Buffalo….Came back 15 minutes later & there were 4…..
