NOT THE ANSWER: Philadelphia Phillies Should IGNORE Brenton Doyle for Center, Say NO to Mediocrity

The Philadelphia Phillies solution to center field better not be Brentton Doyle. I’ll tell you why it would be a terrible move for the Phillies. You might know me for some of my other work in the sports talk space. I’ve been on air over at 975 the fanatic doing sports talk radio here in Philly for over six years. I’ve been a credentialed Philadelphia Phillies media member for the past four seasons and this is now my fourth year as the host of Locked On Phillies. And today’s episode is brought to you by our friends over at Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off your first purchase. Go ahead and check out Game Time. Brenton Doyle’s name has popped up in the rumor mill for a potential trade target for the Philadelphia Phillies in the outfield. And I absolutely hate it. I absolutely hate it. I’m sorry. I I don’t mean to take unnecessary shots at Brenton Doyle, but that can’t be the answer in center field. We’re gonna start off with a breakdown of why that I’m just so out on that move. Also, we’re going to get into a conversation about the bullpen market because Tyler Rogers signed with the Blue Jays yesterday. That is a big-time reliever off the market. He is a guy that I would have loved the Phillies to pick up. The contract was manageable that he ended up with with Toronto. And the Phillies are waiting for JT Ramudo still. Get on your horse, Phillies. And then we’re going to wrap up with our look at the uh off the poll results from our question about who the biggest contender outside of the Dodgers, the biggest competition, I should say, uh with the Phillies in the National League is heading into the 2026 season. But let’s start with this Brentton Doyle conversation because there have been rumors that the Philadelphia Phillies are interested in the Rockies center fielder. And there’s certainly some good here with Brentton Doyle. This dude is a great defensive player. He is an incredible athlete. He is an awesome base runner. Dude can fly around the field. Dude can field the heck out of center field, especially in a big park like Kors. And being able to play defense the way that he has, that’s a really good sign. Only 27 years old, so he’s just getting into his prime. All of that sounds great. And here’s where the problem comes in for Brentton Doyle. Now, he is a right-handed bat, and the Phillies need more righties in their lineup, but they need viable righties who can hit the baseball. And Brentton Doyle is a career 235 hitter. He hit 233 this past year, 15 home runs. and his numbers outside of Korsfield when he is on the road away from the mile high city of Denver, Colorado are starkly different than what his numbers are at home. He’s also just not really all that usable against right-handed pitching. His splits are not good. He’s not a guy who hits bothhandedness all that well. So essentially what you’d be doing is you’d be going out and you’d be getting a guy that could field the heck out of center field, be a great defensive player for you, but another guy that could be just a pencil bat in the lineup that doesn’t even make contact for a pencil bat. Pencil bat is the expression you use for somebody who’s just like a either a slap hitter or a guy without a lot of power or anything like But this guy, his average isn’t great either. Now, there is an understanding about why the Phillies are mentioned in these Brentton Doyle rumors, and it’s because Beggars can’t be choosers. If Harrison Bader signs somewhere else, unless you want Brandon Marsh playing center field for this baseball team, they’re not going to go get Cody Bellinger. The Kyle Schwarber move precludes them from doing that. They’re not going to get Kyle Tucker. Like, they’re not going to get a bigname outfielder in free agency. So unless you’re going to get some guy that I don’t know you can get on a cheap deal a veteran player that you find a steal in center field and there aren’t that many available. Well then that’s going to be a tough situation for the Phillies to fill that spot. So the more I look at it the more ideal Harrison Bader looks and we’ll talk about that this coming week when does he end up making his decision. But to more of this Brentton Doyle point, the other thing is he’s not a free agent. You would have to trade for Brentton Doyle. And that is not a player I feel comfortable giving up any type of prospect capital for. Now, it’s not going to be Painter. It’s not going to be Crawford. It’s not going to be Miller. So, it wouldn’t be like you got to move one of your top three guys in the minor league system, but I don’t want to move anybody in the minor league system. Brenton Doyle is an okay center fielder that is again great defensively and a great base runner. I don’t want this to just sound like the bash Brenton Doyle segment, but I’m so tired of the Philadelphia Phillies offense outfield being a negative for this team. They struggled to get to average in the outfield when you look at this recent stretch or really I don’t know the past what 15 years of Philadelphia Phillies baseball and I’m over that. I’d rather you bring back Harrison Bader and overpay him than trade for Brenton Doyle to have him go out there and hit 230 or maybe even less because he doesn’t have the benefit of playing in course field. Now, Citizens Bank Park is a hitters ballpark. So, maybe he will have some carryover from that, but that feels like an emergency move. And it is what, December 13th. We’re not to the point of the off season where we’re in emergency move territory. Now, if you get to February and pitchers and catchers are down there in Clear Water and the Mets are popping and you don’t have someone to play center field, well, then we’ll have a different discussion. But where we’re at right now, there is no way I can be in on Brentton Doyle. Now, some people I’ve seen compare him to Johan Rojos when it comes to this Phillies conversation. Here’s what I’ll say. Johan Rojos has not proven he can be a regular major league player. He’s had his moments, but he has had some big-time defensive lapses where we thought he was going to be crazy plus out there in center. He’s had some major base running mistakes. He’s just not a polished enough player to play at the major league level right now. Brenton Doyle at least is a polished enough player to play at the major league level. He’s just not a guy that I could see playing center field for a World Series contender. Think about it. I mean, all due respect to the Colorado Rockies, they’re not coming close to winning anything anytime soon. And I’m not saying, well, the reason the Rockies think is because they have this guy Brenton Doyle. Again, I don’t want to go too far in my criticism of who he is as a player because I think he has a place in Major League Baseball. I just don’t think he has a place on the Philadelphia Phillies. You’ve got to make sense when you’re trying to put together these hypothetical moves. And this was rumored by MLB Insiders. So, this is not just some random Twitter popup. Now, it could be, I don’t know, the Rockies are trying to move him. They threw out a name to try and generate interest from other teams saying, “Hey, look, Phillies are contenders. They gave us a call or they talked us uh to us about it at the winter meetings and all of that.” And the next thing you know, some teams are like, “Oh, well, if the Phillies like him, maybe we like him.” There’s a whole bunch of subtuge going on around baseball at this point in the offseason where even the rumors from insiders, from a lot reliable sources may not be reliable. So, you got to take everything with a grain of salt. But I can’t imagine I can’t imagine that this dude would be your answer in center field. Now, some people might hear that and say, Connor, look at Dave Dumbrosski’s outfield history. Maybe you can imagine that he would be Dumbousk’s chosen option in center field. And to that, I say, I wish you were wrong, but you are not. I I mean, I I don’t mind some of the moves Dave Deowski has made in the outfield. Harrison Bader obviously the best so far in his tenure when it comes to acquiring guys via trade. So there are some positives there or at least one positive. But Brenton Doyle would not be one. My ideal profile for a center fielder would be a guy that you can get that is plus defensively. That’s that’s definitely something that Doyle checks that box. Right-handed hitter Doyle checks that box. But I need someone to hit like 245, 250 and I need you to be able to give me 15 to 20 home runs, I think. Or you can get somebody that hits 280 to 290 and we’ll give you 10 home runs. Either way you want to do that and then you’re going to have to find power in one of the corner outfield spots, which is a problem for another day. But those are the two profiles that I believe are acceptable for the Philadelphia Phillies. Harrison Bader fits into the first profile. somebody like, I don’t know, um Steven Quan would uh fit in to the latter profile if the Phillies were interested in going out and getting him. Uh but Brentton Doyle doesn’t fit into either profile. So, for me, it’s a non-starter and certainly not a guy I’m willing to give up prospect capital for. So, if you’re the world’s biggest Brentton Doyle fan, I’m sorry to pour cold water on your idea of him being the Philly’s center field savior. I just do not see it. I hope they don’t make the move. If they do make the move, I hope I’m wrong, but I I can’t. Again, I’ll just say one more time, and maybe I’m just like willing this to be true. I can’t imagine that’s their answer at center field, but we’ve seen some headscratching moves by the Philadelphia Phillies before. Now, let’s talk about another place that the Phillies are going to have to make some moves this off seasonason. The bullpen. I just said in our last episode, the bullpen conversation around baseball is starting to heat up. The market, it’s getting going. And one of the guys I really wanted is now off the market. Tyler Rogers signs with the Blue Jays and it’s time for the Phillies to get on their horse. We’ll talk about the bullpen setup as we continue today’s episode. Let’s talk about game time first, though, because the World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. That was the year that I was born. It’s been a long time, and with 48 teams for the first time ever, it’s going to be absolutely massive. But let’s be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That’s why the Game Time app is clutch. Finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With Game Time, you can track price drops in real time. You can get alerts when grades it’s open. You can buy tickets the moment they hit the app. All of these advantages are the difference between actually getting in the building for a World Cup game, a once in a-lifetime experience, or missing out if you’re using some of the other options. Game time is the absolute best. It puts the power back in your hands and it makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible. There are also a lot of great features that Game Time has all the time, which are the views from your seat before you purchase, so you know exactly what it’s going to look like when you get there. You also have the Game Time guarantee, which means your tickets are 100% authentic every single time. And also, they don’t pop up the fees late as you’re checking out. They show you the full price right from the start. And because of that, you know whether or not you’re getting a good deal in game time. You’re always going to get a great deal. So, take the guesswork out of buying World Cup tickets and every match, concert, or event with Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on MLB for $20 off. Swipe, tap, ticket, and go with Game Time. Tyler Rogers, my sweet prince, he’s heading to Toronto. When we ran through my options for the Philadelphia Phillies offseason, my ideal setup for what the Phillies would do this off seasonason, Tyler Rogers was one of the cornerstones of that plan because the Phillies need a highleverage righty that you can throw in the seventh or eighth innings that’s not named Joan Don because he’s only throwing in the ninth. I’m over a Ryan Kirkering. I don’t think the Phillies have another guy that could do that from the right side. any high leverage stuff. Matt Strum, Jos Alvarado, you got a couple of lefties, but right-handed reliever is a weak spot for this Philadelphia Phillies team. So, Tyler Rogers, who the Phillies have been completely unable to hit ever, would have been a guy that I would really get excited to see the Philadelphia Phillies go out and acquire. But yesterday he signed a deal to go to the Toronto Blue Jays, the reigning American League champions. And it wasn’t a crazy deal. Three years, 37 million. So you’re looking at about 12 and a half a year or 12 and I don’t know, a quarter or a third a year. About $12 million a year. We don’t need to break down the exact math of the AA, but that’s manageable for a pitcher the quality of Tyler Rogers. And the Phillies, I think, could have stomach that deal even with the Kyle Schwarber contract already paid. Now, what’s tough is they have so many other things that they’ve got to lock down this off season before they open themselves up to going after relievers. At least it feels like to me. So, Kyle Schwarber, big box checked off. Great. Next step is by all reports JT Ramutoo figuring out what’s going on there. Now, is the catcher position more important than a right-handed reliever? Absolutely. So, I understand why they’re doing this. But then once you lock down JT Romudo, let’s say you do want to spend $37 million over three years on a high lever backend bullpen arm. Let’s just use the Tyler Rogers contract for an example. you’re going to have to clear up some of that cap space. And the way the Phillies seem to have a plan to do so is by trying to move on from Nick Castanos, trying to move on from, I don’t know, maybe Alec Bow, maybe Brandon Marsh, maybe Bryson Scott. Now, I know none of those guys are on big-time deals. Maybe Matt Stum, you want to trade him. Uh but creating opportunity to do something different at those positions creates movement around the team that may open up a little bit more money to make uh Tyler Rogers level deal happen. But just this past week, we saw Edwin Diaz go to the Dodgers. We saw Robert Suarez go to the Braves. Now we’ve seen Tyler Rogers go to the Blue Jays. We saw Kennley Jansen go to the Detroit Tigers. The relief market’s already getting thin when it comes to names, you know, and I’m not here for bargain bin shopping, but I’m also not expecting the Philadelphia Phillies to alter their timeline. So, this leaves one solution for the Philadelphia Phillies. Call JT Ramudo, blow his phone up, figure out what he needs, and get him back here on a two-year deal. if he’s gonna play hard ball, which I don’t imagine JT’s gonna play hard ball. I really don’t. You don’t want to rush his process because you want to be respectful of his ability to test the market, but I I think the Phillies have some right to be like, “Yo, we kind of need an answer sooner rather than later here, buddy, because we’re getting burned on the reliever market and we can’t sit around and wait forever.” Now, I’d imagine, and I said in an earlier episode this week, JT is going to be signed by the end of the month. Heck, he could be signed by the end of this next week. So, I do believe it’s coming soon, but we’re at the point of the off season, just slightly post winter meetings where things have really opened up where there’s a lot of motion. The hot stove is about as hot as it’s probably going to get all year. If you get there late, dinner’s going to be cold. And the Phillies right now are behind the eight-ball when it comes to a reliever market because of the way that they’ve prioritized Schwarber. now Real Mut. And I get it, but at the same time, it’s not going to be acceptable is not the right word because I I think Schwarber’s more valuable to this team than any righty reliever and I think JT is more valuable to this team than any righty reliever. So, I don’t want to say it’s like not acceptable the way the Phillies are handling this. It’s just not ideal the time that it’s taking to get this stuff done. And I worry that the bullpen is going to suffer because of it. and you may have to get creative. And last time the Phillies tried to get creative, they signed Joe Ross and Jordan Romano. And both of those guys flat out stunk. So, in the best interests of two relievers you sign in free agency, not flat out stinking in 2026, I would love to see the Phillies get into the relief pitcher market. Now, there is a guy that the Phillies went out and signed, and we’re going to talk more about this on Monday’s episode with the whole Bryce Wilson thing. First off, spells his name super weird. B R Y. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Bryce spelled like that. Uh, but a lot of people immediately looked at Wilson, uh, who was with the White Socks last year, and we’re like, uh, why why in the world do the Phillies want this guy? So, we’re going to take a deeper dive into Bryce Wilson and why I I don’t think he has any type of major league impact for the Philadelphia Phillies. I feel like I’m just taking shots left and right. Let me give you a quick disclaimer. All of these players that we’re talking about are professional baseball players. They are all really, really good at the game of baseball. I don’t want to make it sound like some dude sitting behind a microphone is like, “Yeah, this guy stinks. He couldn’t have played D3 with me. It’s not It’s not what I’m saying. You understand though. Just want to put that out there because I want to be respectful of the professional athletes who are very talented at the game. Uh but Bryce Wilson is not an answer. He He’s not a guy that you’re bringing in to be a major league piece, I don’t even think, much less a high leverage arm. So that’s not if anyone’s going to counter this. Well, Connor, they did go ahead and sign a reliever. Did they though? Like we’re talking about actual impact. We’re talking about a team that we’re trying to get from a first round exit to a World Series and Bryce Wilson isn’t going to do it and Brentton Doyle isn’t going to do it. And I need some impact in this Philadelphia Phillies off uh off season and not just bringing back guys that you had last year. And I think that’s how a lot of the fan base is feeling right now. And the reliever market is a small part of it. But we’ve seen a run. It’s like the draft, right? Think think about sports drafts. Think about heck your fantasy draft with your buddies when you play like fantasy football. The runs on certain positions. Somebody drafts a quarterback. Next three teams draft a quarterback and you wait till like round 10 some some annoying person. I was almost going to say a word that I shouldn’t say drafts a defense early and then you’re just like, “Ah, come on, man. Now I got to draft a defense.” Well, the relief market’s getting hot and the Phillies can’t get caught with their pants now. But right now, they kind of are. We’ll see how quickly they can get this real budo thing locked up and how quickly they actually jump into the true reliever market with an impact move if they do. God, I hope they do, but we’ll keep an eye on that as the off season continues. Who are the teams we should be keeping an eye on though around the National League? I asked you in our off the poll question on Twitter, who’s the biggest concern for you outside of the Dodgers that could hurt the Phillies in the National League? The answer, I think, is very prisoner of the moment. But we’ll talk about that as we continue today’s episode. Let’s talk about FanDuel first, though, because NFL Sundays, they move fast. It’s really fun to be able to break down these rumors and scenarios and everything like that and you don’t want to miss any of it. So that’s why again you should become part of our everydayers club and we get a lot of interaction type of elements here on locked on phillies including our off the poll segment which is where I pose a question I tweeted out from the locked on phillies exac account phillies and give you a chance to let your voice be heard on one of the random thoughts that pops into my head about the Philadelphia Phillies. And this week, our off the poll question was about which teams you should be focused on. Who’s the biggest threat to the Phillies in the National League right now outside of the Dodgers? Because I didn’t want to run a 100% to nothing to nothing to nothing poll. Obviously, the Dodgers are this generational team, back-to-back World Series champions, probably going to win it again, ruining baseball. Yes, we’ve heard the whole thing. But outside of the Dodgers, who poses the biggest threat? I put four teams down here. I put the Mets, the Braves, the top two NL East contenders outside of the Phillies, all due respect to the Nationals and Marlins, the Brewers, who I believe are the best team in the National League Central, and the Padres’s, who I believe are the second best team in the National League West. And I think the responses are so prisoner of the moment, but I’m going to try and justify them anyway. So, only 7% are saying the New York Mets, that is by far the least that any of those teams got as responses on this poll. The Padres’s are in third place with 18%. The Brewers in second place at 29% and 46% nearly half of people who responded to this poll picked the Atlanta Braves. This is prisoner of the moment for a couple of reasons. One, the Mets should be higher than 7%. Yes, I hate them as much as the next Phillies fan, but they’re still a pretty darn good team. I know they lost Pete Alonzo. I know they lost Edwin Diaz, but they’ve still got Juan Stoodto. They still got Francisco Lindor. They went and got Marcus Simeon. They have a potentially good rotation, I guess. I mean, they were good for the first half of the season this past year, flamed out after that. But I’m not going to look at the Mets as just this forgettable team, especially when they’re still kind of that thought in the back of your mind, Phillies don’t really play well in that building ever. So, I think it’s a little disrespectful to the Mets, but I’m all for Mets disrespect, so I get it. I I think that’s prisoner of the moment because they just lost those two bigname players and now people are like, “Oh, they’re not a problem anymore.” I think the Braves is prisoner of the moment because in bringing up this conversation for the offthe- poll question, I had a whole segment yesterday about how I think we’re overlooking the Atlanta Braves and the talent level in their lineup with Ronald Akuna Jr. and Matt Olsen and Michael Harris and I know Ozuna is out there available as a free agent, but like they still have a lot of really good Aussie Alb’s all this talent uh that they have. They have a pretty darn good rotation when healthy. They added to their bullpen. So, it’s probably a fair pick, but it also feels like it’s so high in percentage in our responses because of the news that has just happened. The Brewers being second isn’t really surprising. Now, they did have the best record in baseball this past year, so maybe they’re getting a little disrespected with only 29% of the vote. The Padres’s at 18%. I I think that’s the one that’s pretty fair. The Padres’s do not really scare me at all. I’m going to take some shots at the Padres’s. My fault to Javi who hosts Lock on Padres’s. Uh good friend comes on the program when the Phillies play the Padres’s. You should check out his work on lock on Padres’s. Uh that team has big-time loser energy about them and they just kind of have it feels like for this whole core of Machado and Tatis and the guys they have out there. I don’t know, man. I never look at them as viable playoff contender. I don’t. And I’m sure people could say the same thing about the Philadelphia Phillies at this point, but remember when those two teams met in the NLCS back in 22, we we know what happened. But uh I I think that’s the most fair ranking in those off the poll responses is the Padres’s in third place at 18%. I think the Mets should be a little bit higher. We should be more worried about the Mets than those results indicate. We should be a little less worried about the Braves and maybe a little bit more about the Brewers. So I would take some away from the Braves and I’d split it up between the Mets and the Brewers if I was answering that poll and trying to assign percentages where I’m at. But that’s how Phillies fans are feeling. And the worry about Atlanta is right back. We had a nice fun stretch where we had to focus on the Mets. Feels like they might be taking a bit of a slide. Now the Braves might be having a bit of a resurgence. Is 2026 a year where it will once again be the Phillies and the Braves duking it out at the top of the division? Certainly seems like the fan base is feeling that way. It’s hard to argue against. We will see. But identifying your biggest competition is very important for properly evaluating your team. If the Phillies had a bunch of teams in their division or their league who stunk, well, yeah, we’re still going to be harsh on the Phillies because it’s Philadelphia and World Series is the expectation. But you could at least say, okay, well, bullpen’s a little weak, but no one in the division is that good. Lineup leaves some to be desired, but still the best lineup in the division. like we could hypothetically say those things, but now as we’re evaluating other contenders, we have to compare the Phillies on their level. And I still like the Phillies over all those teams, but the NL has some true contenders and they have a juggernaut in the Los Angeles Dodgers who you can’t just ignore it even though we did for the purpose of that segment. So, a very intriguing look into where your mind is going when it comes to the Phil’s competition. Maybe we’ll get some more intriguing looks into the minds of listeners on Monday when we do our mailbag Monday segment. So, I’m going to put out a tweet that you can reply to with your questions for me to answer on anything Phillies related on Monday’s episode. But that’s all for today’s episode. Thank you so much for joining us. Once again, we are part of the Locked On Network, your team every day and now the number one sports podcast network. Please make sure you’re rating, reviewing, subscribing to the YouTube, all that great stuff. That really helps us out here on Locked On Phillies. And I’ll talk to you Monday on our next episode.
