Jared Bednar on How HUGE Quinn Hughes Trade Effects The Central Divison & More
You sure it’s a good question, Jesse? No. All right, go ahead. Let’s try and break a record. One at least one good question today. Uh big big uh big movement in the division uh last night. Kind of a blockbuster trade. Just just your thoughts. You another another heavyhitting defenseman in in the division. Yeah, I think um could be a really good deal for both teams. You know, obviously with Hughes going to Mini, they’re they’re better. They’re immediately better, right? And they’re already one of the top teams in the league and a really good team in our division right now. So, something we’re going to probably have to deal with at some point. And then I think for Vancouver under the circumstances they’re getting some really good young pieces and could be a really good trade for their future as well. Anything else coach? He is. Yeah. He’s going to be coming out for Bill Woody. Having just faced Nashville and having the loss or what are you guys looking to kind of facing them here tonight? Yeah. They’re they’re playing really well. Like this is a team that if you look at their last 10 games, they’re at six and four. Their analytics are, depending on which ones you look at, are top five in the league over that span. So they we had a game in there that we didn’t play very well in that I think Blackwood got us the win and then we went in again and played pretty good hockey game and ended up losing a shootout. So we have to be prepared to play our game and play like we did the other night against Florida. It’s a very similar style. Florida, Nashville. We’ve seen two games now, right from Nashville, then Florida, and we’re seeing them again tonight. Um, so we should be prepared to do some things a little bit better than we have in the past. Jess, I know you you’ve talked about Sam Linsky even recently, but we were just chatting with him and he was just saying how he feels so, you know, comfortable right now because he’s able to just focus on the things he needs to focus on. He feels more comfortable with the schedule. Are you seeing that like maturity in his game off the ice? You know, working on recovery, taking options when needed, things like that? Yeah, I think um he’s always been kind of dedicated to like the off ice stuff. Um older sort of rookie in the league when he came in. Um keeps himself in really good condition. And I I’ve never like questioned that from him. But I think it’s just the familiarity and the I I guess you could say maturity and just understanding what he can and cannot do in the league, what hurts you and what helps you and um whether that’s on the ice or off the ice, I think it takes some players some time. And once you kind of go through the cycle once and you get used to the schedule, I think that the demands of the schedule is a big thing that that young players have to deal with. And working on trying to be consistent within the, you know, the schedule that’s laid out for you is is difficult at times because it’s so demanding. Um, but he’s definitely improved in that area. So now we’re seeing, you know, him at 85% of his game or higher more often, you know, and that’s leading to more success. So I think he’s done a really nice job there. Coach, you didn’t even watch that game tonight. You guys attacked from the get. Yeah. I’m curious as to sustainability of an ongoing attack throughout the period period so on so forth. What are the keys to that to keep for you guys to keep pressing on the opposition and Yeah, I think there’s a lot of different avenues that could go with that, but for me it’s being predictable to yourself, right? So, like we have a certain style we want to play. We have certain tasks that everyone has to do, whether it’s on our breakout, regroups, um, ozone play. Um, a lot of it has to do with playing north, playing fast, and then also the support needed to sort of sustain your game without any gaps in it. And it’s what we talk about a lot. And and then when you do that, you if you’re going to do that, if you’re going to continue to be able to sustain an attack like that, you need everybody going. You can’t have one line go out and do it and then the next line not. And then so everyone kind of has to be on top of their game and in tune with one another. And when we do that, we’re pretty hard to beat. And that’s a really good team in Florida. They’ve been playing some good hockey here recently. And um I I love the chances that we created. Love the way we got to the net. There was a certain shot mentality. We defended hard to get the puck back quickly and then turned it on offense. So, it was that was that was an impressive game for me because I was going to be a little bit worried about our energy coming off a long road trip like that. And it seemed like we had lots. So hopefully we can kind of play the same way here again tonight. Coach talked about that energy optional skate this morning and pretty much everybody was out there except for Nate. Yeah. Um is that a good It’s a good sign. It’s a good sign because a lot of guys took Yes, we we changed it from practice yesterday to off. We had we came off a road trip a few weeks back and um had to play right away again just like we did this time. And then we took the next day off and we responded really well in this second game at home. Um so we’re kind of paying real close attention to that recovery and what works and what doesn’t and then trying to repeat the the things that do more often. Um, that’s why we did that again yesterday. And and a lot of guys, you could tell were tired yesterday and got in and out of the rink pretty quickly. And some guys did some work in the gym. Some guys went on the ice, but they were in and out of there, which is usually a sign that they’re a little tired. And then if you have an optional today, if they’re tired, most guys wouldn’t skate. And there was a lot of guys out. So hopefully that’s a sign of something good to come tonight. Last one. Ed. Um, just we you mentioned the trade. Like is it too early to talk about home ice just in your division? Like do you guys talk about it? Is that something you want? We talked about it before training camp started. It’s not something that we’re revisiting on a daily basis because we know how important it can be. Um yeah, I think that’s brought up. We deliver. We talk about it as a group. We set our mind to something and then we move on. But it’s I think it should be always in the back of our mind especially this year. Thank you. Yeah. I think so. We’ll get there with one good one about that. You sure about that?

I think the current division-based seeding system is fundamentally flawed. When one division is stacked with top contenders, it results in highly-anticipated matchups being wasted early on. The system needs to pivot to a straight-up wild card seeding (1-8), regardless of division, to ensure the strongest teams don't meet until they absolutely have to. We need a fairer path to the finals.
Bednar is such a gangster. Hes saying one thing and thinking abother. Mini lost a lot of depth for that trade. Now they are a 1 line team.
Go get Kadri back!
